Prompt
The people of Tendaji seem to be settling in - and some in places far from their homeland. The tensions are high, and with the whispers of the Alkidike planning an offensive… well, some have been on edge and ready for a fight. Were the outsiders going to help their people when the time came to fight the extremist Alkidike? Most of the natives to the area had their doubts.

An argument had broken out in the market, verbal at first, but it wasn’t long before it became a physical confrontation.

This prompt can be played from either side: your character can be the instigator, or on the defense.

This battle prompt will be resolved by rolling 1D100.
Prentice must roll 70-100 for success.
Stage 2 must roll 60-100 for success.
Stage 3 must roll 50-100 for success.
Stage 4 must roll 40-100 for success.

The Wind Earthling draped the hood of her cape over her light hair and proceeded out the door. It was close to the evening, the sun was starting to disappear behind the horizon and the stars were barely visible. Aseara was slipping out into the night to meet with Nuri, she'd feigned not feeling well at dinner and knew no one would bother her if they came knocking at her door and no one answered. Usually she didn't like slipping out into the night alone, Obans blended quite nicely with the darkness and she did not. So she was going to have to take extra care this time.

The streets were emptying slowly, there were few people left and those who were up where headed to their favorite bar for the evening. Aseara had to quickly hide in an alleyway when she passed groups of Obans who already had had much to drink but weren't done for the evening. It was a little nerve wreaking, but she didn't feel she knew the city well enough yet to take all the dark passages between the buildings it the city. Ah well, it wasn't like she was late or anything and Nuri had picked a simple enough place to meet.

The market place was just in view now, Aseara glanced around and stuck close tot he empty stands until she found the one she was looking for. They had planned to meet at the candy stand and that made her smile. Aseara slide her figure behind the stand and waited for Nuri.

Nuri found himself tense as he moved through the streets, second guessing his decision yet again with agreeing to meet Aseara outside this late in the evening. As he passed by another group of rowdy Obans, their breath tainted with stale ale and meats, he pulled cowl over his face and pushed against the clay buildings near the market. His eyes narrowed darkly at the figures, their boisterous noise causing the muscles in his back to grow tight as he listened to them make comments about the newcomers in the city.

He too couldn't help but notice the growing population of travelers that would use Sulburi as a hub to go from one side of the world to the other. It was an ideal location to pass through, but that didn't mean that they were welcome. The increase in Matori, and other earthlings, left the locals feeling agitated and uneasy. Even he could feel the tension in the air, the anger and frustration at seeing so many of different colored skin. Gritting his teeth, he moved quicker to the designated meeting place, wishing to be at Aseara's side before someone else got there first.

Everything would be so much easier once things settled down and the foreign foot traffic slowed.

As her eyes gave watch for Nuri, she though she saw him and stepped out into the marketplace from behind the merchant stall to see if indeed it was him. It just so happened that it wasn’t. A man had run ahead of his group of friends and now they were making their way into the market place and had spotted her.

“Hey you!” They called to her and Aseara shrank back into the shadows. They couldn’t tell what race of Earthling she was as long as the shadows covered her.

“Don’t make us come get you out of there.” There were some running footsteps and then a man was standing in front of her, he grabbed at her and managed to get a hold of her arm before pulling her out and into the street. Her cowl fell apart and her light hair and skin came alive under the moonlight.

“Well well, what is some Wind girl doing hiding out here for? Waiting for someone maybe?” He was shaking her and Aseara decided that she’d had enough; she kicked the man in the shin and stepped away. His other friends reached them and laughed at the man’s pain.

“I’m not doing anything wrong.” Aseara covered her head again. Where was Nuri?

More laughter met his ears as he moved closer to the market and the stall, and he felt his unease grow to a peak. He saw a crowd of figures near where the arranged meeting place was, and that only spelled trouble. Adding to the fact that he had no weapons on him to speak, and he knew that he was at a major disadvantage yet again. Why was it that every time he was near the Wind dancer there was always trouble to be had?

This time, Nuri knew he needed to keep silent as he moved closer to the group, at least as silent as he could be. As he drew closer, he caught sight of Aseara pulling her cowl over her hair and speaking up in her defense. Letting out a sigh, he shook his head and tried to appear relaxed.

"Evening, Friends..." He interrupted casually, his voice letting them know that he by no means was a friend to them. He strolled over to the side, and glanced between the group and Aseara as he pulled off his own cowl to reveal his Oban looks, "...mind if I join you?"

“Nuri…” Aseara said and moved to him, glaring at the men when they looked form him to her. She was relieved that he was here now; it meant that the men would finally leave her alone.

“She with you pal?” Said the one she’d kicked, he was clearing at her. “You ought to know how to control your woman!” His friends all agreed with him. “Can’t believe an Oban would be with such filth.” The man spat on the ground next to them.

“Let’s go.” Aseara certainly did not want to cause a fight and if they stayed here any logner they would get into one.

Nuri did a quick glance over to make sure that Aseara was alright, his eyes lingering on her hair that was uncovered. She stood out like a beacon in the flickering torch and moonlight, and it caused him to narrow his eyes in frustration. This was not how things were meant to end up, and clearly this was not the best of places to meet. He needed to find a way to diffuse it and quickly.

Hearing Aseara's plea, he sent her a quick nod before turning back to his fellow Obans and putting on his expressionless, warrior's mask.

"You are right. She is my responsibility, and I will make sure this wont happen again. I trust you gentlemen will let me deal with my business and just move along."

He said it with enough force and eye contact to let them know that, if they refused, he wouldn't stand down. Nuri knew they were most likely intoxicated and that he could take them. On top of that, there was no use fighting with them with the way they were thinking, it was better to just shoo them along and, as Aseara said, just go.

With that, he sent one last glare and turned back to his companion and friend to get them moving to a more discrete location.

The men were silent for a few before waving their hands at the two, they still had some drinks waiting for them somewhere and getting into a fight here would do them no good. The man Aseara had kicked gave her one last grimace before moving on with his friends.

“That was close.” Aseara whispered quietly when she thought the men would be far enough not to hear them. She followed Nuri when he ushered her away. Thankfully he’d gotten here just in the nick of time, Aseara didn’t know what she would have done if he hadn’t. Maybe run, they had seemed drunk enough not to be able to follow her if she had. Though risking it and not being able to get away would not have been very good. Now though she was just glad to have Nuri at her side.

“So what shall we be doing tonight?” Aseara asked getting excited to know what they were going to be doing.

Nuri continued to move as Aseara relaxed, feeling tense and frustrated that he wasn't aware of the danger she was in. He had heard the rumors, heard what people were saying about outsiders. As he glanced over to the Wind girl, he couldn't help but think, yet again, how much she shined against the darker colors of Oba. She wasn't safe, and she didn't even seem to realize it. The war wounds were still fresh in the minds of Obans, and although she wasn't a Shifter, she still had stood against them.

He let out a deep sigh and took her down a side street and away from the marketplace once more.

Once they had finally gotten away, he spun around and looked down at Aseara with a serious face, hiding his concern with a rough, soldier-like demand, "What happened? Why did they approach you?"

He was gruff, his concern clouding his judgement and not letting him relax after what he had stumbled upon.

While Aseara had been cheery that Nuri was here with her now, when he spun on her, her expression faltered. Why did he seem so angry? He’d never been like this with her before, Aseara tightened the cape around her as if unsure how to react. This was supposed to be a good night, they were supposed to be having fun, not being all serious.

“I was waiting for you,” Aseara said defensively. “They were drunks, they probably thought I was a prostitute or something and grabbed me.” Why did she have to explain herself to him? She hadn’t done anything wrong. “Why would you even think something differently had happened?” She wanted to accuse him of being late, but she wasn’t like that and her accusations went untold.

Nuri controlled his face at her response, glancing around the area once more before running a hand through his hair. She didn't realize how dangerous this was, and he was angry at himself for not realizing how stupid it was to agree to meet in the marketplace.

"Even if they did think you a prostitute, they probably didn't approach you for that." he responded with an even voice, "There are very few people here in Oba who would welcome your presence, Aseara. With all of the trouble that is being caused, no one wants an outsider on the streets this late at night."

She had to see just how dangerous it was, she had to understand that she wasn't safe just walking around with her hood down, like a beacon of her heritage. War was still fresh on everyone's mind, and they were looking for an excuse to show their superiority once more.

Why did he keep glancing around? Was he scared of being seen with her? Really? After all this time… Anger began to burn Asearas cheeks and her eyes turned to a glare directed at him. It was because she was a Wind girl wasn’t it? And the more Aseara thought about it and her mind made up situations in her mind the angrier she got until the words burst from her lips.

“It’s because I’m Wind isn’t it!” She almost yelled, she threw her hands up. “Look at me Nuri! Look at me and take a good look. What do you see?” She couldn’t stop herself she was so angry.

“My clothes are Oban made, are Oban colored, are Oban design. I gave up my life back home to come here, I gave up everything.” But he didn’t understand, how could he? “I live by Oban law, I eat Oban food, I serve and work for Obans.” Couldn’t he see?

“The only difference between you and I Nuri, is the color of your skin, hair, and eyes. Things that shouldn’t matter to you matter for some reason I cannot understand. So what is it going to take before everyone sees I am just like everyone else? What do I have to do to prove myself?”

By the gods Aseara wanted to give, wanted to throw in the towel and return home where they would welcome her happily back into their fold. She wanted Nuri to see past her appearance so bad, why couldn’t? Why did he have to act like he was, as if she was a problem.

“I’m hurt Nuri.” The words were spoken softly, with tears threatening to spill but at least she had vented out the anger.

Her first outburst caught him off guard, enough so that he turned to her with wide eyes. Had he not the control thanks to his upbringing, he would have dropped his mouth open and gaped at her for her loud and surprising voice. Never, since they first interacted, had she raised her voice in such anger. Instead, to control himself, he ground his teeth together and let her go, knowing he would have no chance to interrupt.

He even believed if he so dared to speak, she might physically lash out at him, her anger was that palpable.

It wasn't until she seemed to physically diffuse, to curl into herself, that he realized that she was truly hurt by the way things were. That she didn't understand why simply covering her body in Oban silks wouldn't be enough for her to be welcome among the people around him. Even he had no true clue, no good excuse except because.

Because of their pride.

Because of the war.

Because she was who she was.

Taking a deep breath, he reached out in an effort to comfort her, his hands brushing across her shoulders as he stepped close and looked down at his friend.

"Aseara..." He strained out, "It is because you are Wind just as much as because who we are. Obans do not like outsiders. Just because our King has agreed to peace doesn't mean that there will be peace on the streets. Just because you dress in red doesn't mean that a man wont walk up and demand you leave."

He sighed again, shaking his head and dropping his hands to his side.

"I don't mean to hurt you, Aseara. I just want to protect you, to make sure you are safe. I fear for you every day you walk in these streets because I know what they are thinking. I know what every Oban feels when they look at you, because I was raised with the same views."

He knew what they thought because he too thought the same. He too thinks the same, "I know you are different, Aseara. I know you, but no one else here does. Everyone just sees you as a potential enemy. A potential slave. A potential spy."

Nuri didn’t understand, they were part of Tendaji now. They were going to have to get used to strangers walking their streets, strangers interacting with their people. She knew he wanted to protect her, she knew this. However, Aseara didn’t want to fight anymore. The night was ruined, truly ruined by not only these men, but Nuri’s attitude. Now, all she wanted to do was to go home and not think about this night ever again. Perhaps one day he would understand, perhaps not. She would adore him none the less but right now she could not deal with it anymore.

“I’m going to go home, I think you should do the same too Nuri.” She sounded defeated; she didn’t know how to fix this. “We can practice another day.”

And with that she moved closer to him, getting up on her tippy toes and gave him a kiss on the cheek before turning away. She put her hood up and disappeared into the night again. Aseara wanted to fix this; she wanted to prove to all of them that she was just as capable as any other Oban was. And she would.

One day she would.

His silence was heavy as he watched her, realizing deep down that she didn't understand, or refused to understand his side. It was if there were a wall suddenly between them, stopping them from reaching an agreement of where things needed to go. He felt heavy, and his words didn't seem to even make sense to him.

When she spoke up about wanting to leave, about wanting to practice another day, he felt there was a double meaning behind her words. They hadn't gotten a chance yet to even start, and already things were unraveling. His brain began to finally speak up, telling him he needed to say something, before she stepped close and brushed her lips on his cheek.

Heat flushed across his face, and all he could do was watch as she pulled up her hood and turned away. He watched her go, disappearing into the darkness and clearly blending into the atmosphere that was their city.

Their city.

She was right, she belonged here and she was well adjusted to how things needed to be. If she had her hood up, no one would think twice about if she were Oban or other.

Looking away from the shadows where she went, he moved back toward his own home. Dissatisfaction and failure tainted his mind as he went, and he suddenly had the depressing wonder cross his mind.

How long would it be until he saw Aseara again?
