Lock felt nothing since kneeling. He was peaceful, certainly, but he had always kept to himself more than anything. He watched others interact and took stock of the interactions, but never really put himself into the pool for analysis.
So it made sense that when he was assigned a partner for some kind of magical quest he was incredibly awkward. He looped up his supply sack in silence, throwing it over his trusty steed and petting her calmly.
He wasn't unsociable, and court etiquette had taught him to only stall for so long. "My name is Lock," he offered as a start. "It's nice to meet you." QUEST STATUS Food remaining: ? YOUR HP: 30/30

In comparison to Lock's calm, efficient readiness, Drona was a hurricane. She laughed and played along as her horse danced around her, playfully avoiding her pack of food and other supplies. She took longer to get ready, and was a disheveled mess by the time she wrestled the steed into submission.
She pushed her hair of her face and stuck her hand out for him to shake. Clearly she hadn't been raised in a court. "I'm Drona. You ready for a long journey?" QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 58 YOUR HP: 30

Lock's foot clamped into the stirrups and he pulled himself onto his horse. He looked natural on the horse, like he was born for it. It wasn't that he didn't want to talk longer with Drona, but more that he was anxious to get moving and to prove himself.
A knight must go on quests in order to further themselves.
"Well met, lady Drona," he said politely, gripping the reins in his hands tightly. "I should be ready. I'm grateful for the company." All pleasantries, and perhaps his monotonous expression gave that away.
He flicked the reins lightly and the horse began to walk. The city soon gave way to the cliffsides of the countryside. The horizon was dark, and Lock found it unsettling. "The riders draw closer every day," he said with great pause, gazing at the skyline before continuing.
They paused at a particularly harsh ravine, both to rest their horses and to take a break for themselves to eat. Lock leaned against a tree and suddenly bees were upon them. Namely, his horse.
When they'd gotten out of distance of the swarm, Lock stated, "I will continue on foot." Down, but not out. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 53/58 YOUR HP: 30/30

Drona arched a brow at his monotony, clearly catching on that he didn't care much if she was there or not. It didn't bother her much, to be honest. She was here for the quest, and he'd either warm up to her or get over it.
She climbed onto her own horse, less graceful but looking no worse for it. She relaxed into the ride as they traveled further into the open countryside. It was isolated and comfortable to her, though she couldn't remember why. The sounds of nightlife kept her at ease.
"We'll be ready," she replied with a shrug. They were knights, there was little else to do but wait.
When the bees swarmed, Drona was quick to swing herself back on her horse, but Lock was less fortunate. She patted her mount's neck. "If you get tired, she could probably carry us both."
They'd only continued maybe another mile before a canine growl disturbed the peace. In the battle to protect their supplies, the wolf's teeth grazed her bare midriff. She didn't bleed much, but it stung like hell. She used a spare rag to stanch the bleeding and frowned at Lock. "At least the food is safe."QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 53 YOUR HP: 20

Lock had never encountered a wolf before- at least, he couldn't remember if he'd seen one before or not- but he knew what it was and a snapping canine beast was not welcome here.
He helped Drona fend it off with his sword as best he could, but it was really her that did most of the fighting. The tactical side of things was his game, not swordplay. He bet lives, not wages.
Begrudgingly, he accepted her offer and hopped behind the girl on the horse. There was hardly anything romantic about his spidery fingers and skinny bones holding onto her backside incredibly awkwardly, especially when he looked away nervously for fear that he might fall off. At least she was tall so it made the arrangement easier.
At a stream, he opened his mouth to finally say something to her about the positioning when he noticed one of their bags was missing. He searched the entire miniature campsite, but the bag was nowhere to be found. "Something isn't right," he told her shortly. First his horse, then more food went missing ... It wasn't right.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 43/58 YOUR HP: 30/30

She kind of felt back for the way he seemed so awkward and uncomfortable sharing her horse, but there were few other options. He'd be way more uncomfortable trying to keep up with her palomino's long strides for the rest of the journey.
They stopped to give her horse a rest at the stream, and the poor thing immediately laid down to rest it's legs. Drona brought it water, but she was concerned it wouldn't be enough.
She helped Lock search for the missing bag, but no matter where they looked it didn't turn up. "Well, it's about to get even worse. I don't think my horse will take us any further, so we're both on foot." QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 38 YOUR HP: 20

Lock at least found solidarity in them both having lost their horses. It brought a strange grin to his face. He somewhat liked the challenge.
"At least we're together?" he told her. "Better to suffer in company than in misery alone." He wasn't sure who had told him that, but it resonated with him.
They approached a mountainside and Lock raised an eyebrow at it. "This does not bode well," he said succinctly. He was right too, because almost immediately he set off a booby trap that had an axe swinging towards him. Swell.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 28/58 YOUR HP: 25/30

Drona laughed and shrugged. "Yeah, I supposed it's better not to go at it alone." At least he seemed to find a bizarre happiness in the situation. Or he was actually warming up to her, as she'd predicted.
Everyone warmed up eventually. She was a delight.
Her shoulders sank as the came upon the mountainside, and she windmilled out the way of the axe trap that Lock had activated, but that only made her start up a trap much worse. She felt the piercing pain of arrows spearing through her skin, and she knew this was the end of the journey for her.
"I'm just going to lay here," she shuddered. "Go finish what we started."QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 23 YOUR HP: 20

Lock looked alarmed. Drona's wounds weren't just bad, they were bad. If he left, what was saying that she would make it out alive?
A knight must always help those in need.
He knelt beside Drona and gently tried to put an arm around her. He'd carry her to the end if he had to. He wasn't about to leave her to die in a cave with axes and spiders and wolves and runaway horses and bees.
"Go finish what we started."
He gave her a hard look. A knight should remember their place. With much regret written on his face, he nodded and continued onward. "I'll come back for you." He promised.
Inside was a steel grey prison. The spires of the stalagmites and stalactites created a cage, in the center of which sat a glistening, blackish pair of pauldrons.
He snatched them and went back for Drona, eventually getting back to the castle too.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 28/58 YOUR HP: 25/30
