After downing a hard roll and a mug of the lukewarm dishwater they were passing off as tea around here, Brenley tried to muster his courage again. This time, he made it through the kitchens and all the way to the horses before he needed a break. By now, it seemed that everyone had heard rumors of the missing king, and the stables were crowded with apprentice knights looking for renown and favor. There was a slight possibility that some of them might have been as reluctant as he was, but the way they scampered and genuflected suggested that was untrue. He had pledged his service. He had given his word. From the looks of things, no one would know if he didn't keep it.

His mount's name was Wolf, and the gelding was as spirited as a stallion. For someone who had never ridden before, climbing atop the creature's back was a nightmare in and of itself, which meant staying on and moving forward at anything faster than a slow walk was torturous. He did think to wonder if he might have been a skilled rider before all of this, but he didn't ponder it for long. It was obvious he wasn't. When they reached the mountains, Wolf nearly threw him to his death for no reason that Brenley could deduce. Once he had caught his breath, he looked over the food and was disappointed to discover a moderate amount of it was missing. As if he had understood just how apprehensive Brenley was about riding, Wolf ran off completely without warning the next time they stopped. The knight in training stared after his former mount, wondering just what the horse thought he was accomplishing by prancing away like that. Had he done this out of spite? Did he know his way back to Camelot? Was he doomed to find death in the jaws of a horseman? Ooh! Maybe that's why they were called that!
When the beast was finally out of sight, Bren faced the entrance to the mountain labyrinth, sighing as he dragged his supplies in after him. He doubted sincerely that his horse had been acting up on purpose or that the horsemen ate horses. There was nothing out here that seemed even remotely dangerous. Yes, there were skeletons and the occasional... skeleton with meat, but there were no sinister sounds, no sounds at all beyond the scuffling of his own booted feet and the occasional whistle of wind through the maze. There was even... was that food? The journey was slow without a horse, and rather tiring for one who didn't regularly climb hills. Brenley didn't know why the path forward was so steep, but he found out rather definitively when he stepped out onto a rocky ledge that was much higher than the ground below. An odd heap of leather lay on the other side of a thin catwalk. The last thing he wanted to do was cross, but the apprentice found himself doing so anyway. It most certainly wasn't a king, but it fit him perfectly and shimmered prettily in the weak sun. He didn't think it was terribly common to find large, protective shoulder armor on mountaintops, but he was thankful for his odd discovery when a group of giant eagles descended upon him and pecked him up rather ferociously. He didn't suppose that he would be able to train them to carry him to safety before he was brutally murdered. A downright shame.Quote: Rolling a 1: Giant unexplainable eagles start attacking you! Ow!
