Tony was sitting on the sofa, waiting for his wife to come home from her errands outside. He usually was at work by now, but he was going to be a little late today because he knew he needed to talk to his wife about this latest development in his very strange life.

Why she was still with him, he would never know.

He had his leg up on a stool, since it hurt less when he was resting it up rather than having it down on the floor, and Kyndall did not like it when he had his foot on the table. Not that he could blame her, but he had not had any better options until they invested in this little thing. It was probably his new favorite thing in the house now.

After all members of his family still living under their roof, of course.

He had a bouquet of flowers in his hand, which he had managed to sneak into the house while she was out, and was wringing his hand around the stem unconsciously. He did not want to hurt the stems, though, and had to keep telling himself to stop.

When he heard the doorknob turning, he got to his feet, keeping the flowers in one hand while he leaned on his cane with the other. He took a breath, hoping she would not be angry with him for... adopting a half dragon and hiding him in the basement at work. Among all the other reasons she constantly gave her to be mad at him.

She really was a saint, and he knew he was lucky. He just hoped she would buy it when he told her that, and not just walk back outside when he told her what he was up to.

Kyndall never knew what to expect these days. He drove her near to madness as she wanted him to heal properly and knew that no matter what she did he was still a Royal Knight and his sense of duty trumped her sense of concern nine times out of ten.

She loved him and would forgive him anything, of course. She knew she was lucky to have him in her life and knew she was lucky with how much he loved her. He cared for her far better than anyone else ever had. Still, there were moments when she wasn't sure what to do with herself. Neither of them were perfect and she did not handle change especially well.

Kyn pushed the door open and was surprised to see her husband at home, especially with the library opening any moment.

"Tony? Shouldn't you and the puppies be at work?"

He usually took Gizmo and Dogby and she took Sarah to day care, or to work when she could. If he took Sarah to work not only would she be a sneaky terror to his books but he might not get any work done with so many people stopping him for his overload of cute along with their puppies.

"What did I do right or did you do wrong?"

She did not warrant flowers every day...

Tony looked shocked that she would ask such a question, moving to her to give her a kiss on the cheek before offering her the flowers. He smiled at her lovingly, which was genuine, but he was not quite sure what to say to her first.

"Don't worry about work, I'll be a bit late, it's alright." Since he ran the place now, he was not too worried about it. Not that he just decided to not come in on time: he did let his coworkers know. They often told him he worked too much, anyway.

"Ah. Well. I just thought you might want some flowers, that's all. And some time with your brave and handsome husband. It is almost mother's day, you know. Uh."

He was just digging himself a hole, he realized, and he was going to end up in a pretty deep one, anyway. No need to make it worse.

"Not that... this is your mother's day present. Anyway, uh. Well, honey, I just wanted to uh... tell you... about something that happened while I was setting out on my patrol the other night. Did I mention... you look very nice in that color? Because you do, honestly. You look lovely today."

Smooth as always.

With every shovel full she saw him going in deeper and deeper. Kyndall half expected him to tell her that he had been injured again or something, not suspecting that it was something else, like a youma in the basement. She took the flowers and inhaled their sweet scent, charmed as always by his sweet but somewhat bumbling ways.

"Tony," she warned softly when it turned from compliments to deflection.

She crossed the room and brought him along, wanting him to get off his cast. She did not like him putting pressure on his broken leg if he didn't need to. Gizmo came in and whined, wanting to go to the big place where everyone doted on her and her sister. She was not sure why they were not going for a ride yet but all she could do was look at her mom and dad pitifully.

"What's going on, Tony?"

They had yet to really discuss Mother's Day. She didn't think Nathan would want to celebrate and Harmony had to work. It would just be them and Sarah, she was pretty sure. But she wasn't really thinking about that. So long as they were together she would have a nice day.

"Love...?"

"Ah. Okay, well."

He sat down with her, sighing once they were settled and looked at her with a sheepish look on his face. He put his hand over hers, knowing that she was not going to be as upset with him as he was making it seem in his head. Things were always much worse in their minds, right?

Hopefully.

"Well. Ah. Let's see. You remember that fight where I was hurt? What we were doing? Well there was a Negaverse Captain there, Merlinite, who told me he was part of things and said he wanted to purify, but was too scared of Painite to do so. Well. He came to the library last night, but unfortunately, he was too late to be able to become a knight. He had been... ah... corrupted into a half youma."

He watched her carefully, not just to make sure she was still listening, as he had no doubt about that, at least.

"He was thin, and dirty, and it was clear to me that he was hiding from the negaverse. He still wants to purify. Painite forced Chaos into him, and transformed him into... well. Half dragon, half human, it looks like. He is a very kind soul, and I see the good in him. I know he just needs help, and so I. Well. I gave him keys to the library basement, and told him he could live down there. Uh. So I'll be bringing him food and helping him while he... you know. Lives at the library."

He had not given his identity away, and had not compromised his family, but he did still jump head first into helping someone else that was very much steeped in Chaos.

"His name is Dennis now. It was who he was before he was corrupted. He can't power down any more, and whoever his previous self was is presumably dead or missing, but ah... he doesn't want to use his negaverse name anymore so. Dennis, if you meet him."

For a moment a wide eyed look of surprise and apprehension crossed her face. She leaned down absently and picked up Gizmo, bringing her into her lap while she let what he told her processed. The corgi benefited from her attentions while her head wrapped around this.

"Are you sure?"

Their family had too much to risk on anything he wasn't one hundred percent certain about. Painite liked to torment them and she remembered how much she lost to the General in the future and it still broke her heart even though it hadn't happened yet. She was half tempted to ask Harmony to move home to be able to protect her. Her daughters were the only ones not in this war, as far as she knew.

"Tony, is it safe?"

She knew he was a softie at heart and was used to that but there was a difference between bringing home a puppy and a half youma. She trusted him. She loved him. But sometimes he made decisions and did things that frightened her and she would never have approved of if she were there.

"Well. I think so. He's not a bad guy, and he did want to be a knight. He just wasn't given the chance. The only risk is ah... someone coming to find him, but I want to protect him from that. There is no risk to our home and family, I promise."

He looked at her with that kicked puppy look he got when he was asking for permission to do something stupid. He scooted closer to her, lifting his hand to her cheek.

"You know how I feel about the Negaverse. Everyone deserves the chance to purify. If I can help him, if I can figure out a way to help a youma or part youma... it would be a profound advancement for the White Moon. More than that, he deserves the effort. I know it seems dangerous, but maybe if you met him you would understand."

It seemed like Camelot had adopted yet another pseudo child into his fold, and his paternal instincts were in full swing.

"Oh, Tony, I wish you wouldn't make decisions for us."

This half youma he was referring to may not have been a bad guy. Maybe he had wanted to purify and now wouldn't have the chance but he also had one hell of a powerful enemy looking for him and she did not want to risk her husband, again, when it came to Painite's wrath. The General seemed to make it her life's work to destroy them and had been all too successful in causing them pain and misery on more than one occasion. The close calls were numbering too high for Kyndall's comfort anymore.

She was pretty sure Camelot was already the prime reason why Painite seemed to dislike knights so intensely.

She leaned into his touch and closed her eyes, letting Gizmo wriggle down to find Dogby because the humans were not being fun right now.

"I know you mean well, love. It just frightens me. If Painite should find him...you know what that would mean for you, for the library."

Her voice was shaking but she was trying to remain as calm as possible. She wasn't angry or insisting that he not do this thing. Kyndall was just scared of the possibilities, the unknown factors that neither of them would be able to control in the future. Of course there were benefits, not the least of which was showing Dennis kindness and compassion.

"How many times do I have to nearly lose you before you understand what toll it takes on me? You're the love of my life, Tony. If I lose you there won't be another for me. There was no man before and there won't be one after. You're half of my soul and lately there have been too many close calls for my liking."

Which was, of course, the heart of the matter. She would not say no to him. She never had before, in fact, but she needed reassurance that he understood the weight of his choices and how they affected her.

"I won't let Painite come close. If Dennis is in danger, I'll make sure to keep her away from the library, and from you. I'm not scared of her: she got lucky before, because of her traps. I won't let that happen again."

He had thought he killed her once, and suffered all the guilt that knowledge brought. Now, he did not think he would feel any of that again. If he had to end Painite's life now, it would be for good, and it would not cause him much guilt or pain.

It was not that he wanted to kill her, but more that he knew he had to.

She was relentless, and would never stop otherwise. She had already proven that.

"Darling," he said gently, "I will do what I can to be a better husband for you. I know it's not perfect. But I love you. I do. I want to take care of you and our family."

"You're a good man, and a good husband."

Kyn caught his lips briefly to punctuate, looking at him with that adoring look in her eyes. That look was only his. She loved that he tried to be a hero to everyone. She loved his bravery and commitment. She understood what it was to want to nurture these younger people in a war they had not asked for but she also knew fear and worry. Even more than those young people she wanted her family near her always. He saw beyond that when she couldn't.

Sometimes he was so good he made her feel selfish. She felt selfish now, blushing and looking away.

"You're so much stronger than I am."

He was sometimes much better than she was...

"If you're sure, Tony, I won't say no."

She couldn't. Not to him. Not ever. Not even when she was 99% sure she was putting her foot down for a good reason. One puppy look and she was toast.

"No, that's not true. You're an amazing woman, and you are the perfect compliment to my recklessness. I know you want to keep us all safe, and I appreciate the way you help me see things I would not think about if left to my ah... white knight tendencies. I know I can risk a lot sometimes, and I don't always think of the cost. But I would never want to lose you."

He moved to put his arms around her, hugging her to him and sighing heavily. He was glad that she had taken things so well, and though she was nervous, she was willing to support him.

"I love you."

He closed his eyes for a moment, holding her to him and reveling in the warm feeling of love before he chuckled and looked down at her, grinning teasingly.

"You do look very lovely today, you know. I was not just saying that for the sake of it. Did it help, though? And the flowers?"

"You're right," she teased, leaning against him and inhaling his aftershave. "You're lucky to have me, darling."

They both were lucky, and that was what made them work.

"I love you, too."

Kyndall let herself relax into her husband, trying to push down the anxiety that had built up. She was such a mess with things like this. Now that the initial shock had worn off she was quite a bit calmer. It helped to know that no matter what she had a man that loved her. A family that loved her.

"Wine would have been better if it wasn't ten am, darling, but the compliments were nice."

Still completely see through, though.
