Serenia.

The land of light.

Her homeland.

War-torn, bloodstained, ravaged by so many. Dragons had been there first, and then the magescians had come. And then they had created the khehora.

Between those three, the balance of the world shuddered and shifted. The Mara had unbalanced it further – unnatural creatures of metal and stone. Her world, her homeland, was suffering and it was beginning to cry out and thrash back in retaliation. What other explanation could Suluksati have for the violent rampages of the khehora that she had once considered family? The one she had hatched next to and had loved and admired for so long? It hurt her to see her world falling apart, but truthfully, the ali-khehorian's world had been falling apart ever since she had realized the terrible and heartless wrongness of the dragon hunts. Her world had never truly been complete.

So it was that, despite the turmoil in her heart, despite the solitude enforced upon her by her quest, Suluksati patrolled Serenia's skies with her usual patience, seeking out dragons and hunter alike. Dragons to protect or deflect. Hunters to turn away or destroy.

Such was the grim task that the white-feathered beast was set on... A task that brought her little joy, but much justice.

Her yellow eyes caught a disturbance below, a shudder of golden leaves that she identified – from long observation and instinct – as a pack of Ysali on the prowl. But what she wondered, did they hunt?

She began to follow them, curious and cautious, careful not to bother the beasts in their stalking...

It took him a while to notice them. He wasn’t a hunter and even though he wanted to be a warrior he was definitely not even close to being one yet. So when he went out into the field, with the intention of trying his hand at finding one Ysali dragon and get it away from the rest, he didn’t expect an entire pack. Sure, he read up on them after the failed hunt with his father, but he had brought bait. He just hadn’t expected that he would be the bait they preferred. There was the sound of rustling and a soft hiss.

Alionse jumped back, hurrying away. How many are there? He wasn’t sure if there were two or ten. In any case he needed to get in a better position. With the trees and bushes, he was at a serious disadvantage. If he could just get to the open field he knew he could do this. The thought of running away wasn’t even an option. He had to fight to prove to his father and to himself that he could be the warrior he was determined to be. This wasn’t a phase, but his choice.

Gripping the small dagger his father had given to him he sped up his steps. So close. The open field was just up ahead. One more step, but before he could even take a step he felt something wrap around his ankle. Alionse’s eyes widened. Crap.

He tumbled over as the vine tugged him, dragging him off its feet. He should have known. He had read how the Ysali had certain earth abilities, he even had experienced it first hand, but he had been careless. Alionse quickly twisted, around as the vine began to drag him. He slice the blade through the vine, grateful that his father had kept it sharp. He scrambled backwards and as he did one of the Ysali leaped at him. He swung his knife, but the Ysali twisted out of the blades way just in time.

The beast backed away and as it did, two other dragons came out of the bush, hissing and growling. Alionse swallowed and tried not to remember how the last time he faced three of them alone, his father had been there to rescue him.

His father wasn’t here this time. It was just him and them. Alionse swallowed. He climbed to his feet, narrowing his eyes. He gripped the blade firmly, trying to ignore the trembling of his hand. He would do this and he would win.

This was an experienced – and perhaps vengeful – pack. She could see this as the dragons separated and looped around, cutting off... something... that moved along one of the paths of the great forest. Suluksati's feathered wings were quiet on the wind, and so she dared to dip closer, just to see. Was it a beast? Was it a seasoned hunter, about to find justice at their claws? Or was it a mere child, toddling out into the wood to do what it's ancestors had done for generations, unaware of the costs and consequences.

Or, worse, was it a child who was simply playing, alone? Or a traveller?

Suluksati did not encourage the hunting of innocents. Those who did not hunt her dragons were rare enough to preserve, so that the idea of peace could linger on.

She skimmed the tops of the trees, her claws lifted to avoid disturbing the branches as the Ysali arranged their strike.

Ah.

Suluksati could see, now, that it was an Orderite – very young, male, and armed. Not a child playing, or a seasoned hunter. Not a traveller, either, since they typically went in pairs or groups – a sensible option that Suluksati had no real means to do herself (though she often wished it). A young hunter, then, an orakoir (of a sort) who had been taught the ways of its parents and was now trying the hunt on its own, with its own claws. Foolish, but such were the twolegs, and foolishness and training could be corrected. Such could be forgiven. He would not be so far gone yet to be closed to her way of thinking.

Thus, he was worth aiding.

She watched the Ysali attack and, hoping he would survive for at least a while, circled around to make a landing in the soft mast of the forest. She shifted her feathers around and sniffed the breeze, aware, as she always was, of the hidden dangers of her homeland. Satisfied that the dragons were the only danger here, she began to run towards the site of attack, her paws muffled to silence by the ground.

Finally, she came upon them as they circled the boy, seeking openings to strike, bite, and end his life. She took a deep breath and, breaking her silence, let loose with a bellow that shook the trees. Her hope was to scare them, to chase them off – it worked sometimes, especially with the canny and small Ysali.

But as brilliant green eyes and gnarled roots and vines came leaping for her, she knew that that hope was in vain. Mentally, she prepared herself to slay the beautiful creatures.

There was nothing that could have prepared him for what happened next. A loud roar filled the air, shaking the entire forest. Alionse's green eyes widened and his skin paled as a dragon as big as a horse stepped into his line of vision. The dragon, unlike the Ysali, wasn't completely green. Instead its feathery wings had green feathers at its edges, but the rest of it was white. For a few seconds Alionse was frozen in place as he gaped in awe at the magnificent creature.

The Ysali seemed less impressed. Instead they lashed out, using the same vines and roots to attack. Even a few leapt at the bigger dragon, as they clashed, Alionse finally stumbled out of his daze. He should run. Even he knew when the odds were too high against him for him to win. For all he knew the Ysali were fighting the bigger dragon in an attempt to see which one of them would get him as a meal. No thanks! Taking one more look at the dragon, because he wasn't sure when he would see something this grand again, Alionse turned to run out of the forest only his plan didn't work. One of the Ysali had been watching him.

The dragon rushed him, knocking him to the ground. Alionse head banged against the ground with a thud. He barely had time to wince, before the dragon was in his face. It's mouth wide and ready to clamp down. Alionse shoved hard against the beast's chest. The dragon slid back, but was right back at him in a few seconds. Still, those seconds was enough for Alionse to adjust his grip on his father's dagger and slash it across the dragon's breast.

The dragon pulled back a little and Alionse shoved, harder this time, now that he was in a better position. It rolled off him and landed on its feet. It shook its head and then something strange began to happen. Green vines wrapped around the dragon and as it did the wound on it's chest began to heal.

It's healing itself!

Alionse felt dread climb up his stomach. Unlike the ones him and his father fought, these dragons seemed determined to make him a meal. Running wasn't an option. Alionse narrowed his eyes. Fine! Then I won't run. He moved into a fighting stance he learned, his dagger out in front of him as him and the dragon circled each other. Each one was ready to strike. Still he was very much aware of the other, bigger dragon. He had to finish this quickly and get away, otherwise it would end up with him and the white and green dragon left and he might be lucky enough to finish off the Ysali, but there was no way he could fight the bigger dragon. He swallowed.

Stay focused!

He would figure out everything else as he went. Right now the battle he needed to concentrate on was the one in front of him.

Suluksati managed to knock away her attackers with a swipe of her claws, grabbing one of them in her teeth and biting down hard, feeling her sharp fangs slip through flesh and organs. She shook them, once, and tossed them aside. They cried out once, hoarsely, before slumping in death, the body lingering for a moment before dissolving away into ash and a gleaming green soul orb.

She had hoped that her demonstration – and her subsequent golden-eyed, threatening glare and bloody-toothed snarl – would scare off the dragons, but apparently... not.

Well, she had hoped. Clearly, it would require a greater demonstration of power to show them that this prey was not worth it. She gathered light magic in her mouth, a gutteral sound building in her throat as she braced herself on the ground, tail lashing as the Ysali circled around her.

Suddenly, she roared, sending a stream of potent magical light – intense like concentrated sunlight – at the ysali, incinerating a few of them and burning others with the blast of light. A little winded, she shoved aside the blinking survivors, running to the aid of the small Orderite. She snapped at the Ysali, distracting it as it turned to snarl at her, its fangs shimmering with poison.

She snarled back, deep and rumbling.

Go... she pleaded, Stop being foolish and go...

Alionse's eyes widened as the other dragon let out a blast, killing the other Ysali dragoons. He felt sweat trickle down his neck and a real wave of fear. He needed to get out of here. There was no way he would survive that sort of blast if the bigger dragon decided to do that to him. Even so, the Ysali in front of him wasn't letting up. It stared at him with narrowed eyes, waiting for an opening. Alionse shifted his grip on his knife. The Ysali must have saw it's opening, because it launched forward, only to quickly draw back when the bigger dragon cut in front of it.

The Ysali snarled at the bigger dragon. It seemed intent on making Alionse it's prey. The dragon snarled back and for a moment the Ysali paused. It's gaze shifted as if looking for its companions, but the other Ysali had been wiped out. Alionse swallowed, his gaze never leaving the dragon, ready to fight if it decided to attack. The Ysali let out another snarled, before slowly backing away. With another glare at the two, the dragon turned and fled.

Alionse would have let out a sigh of relief if he didn't have an even bigger problem beside him. He knew there was no way he could fight the dragon and win, especially not with just a knife. Maybe if he had a sword, but even he could admit to himself that he would be ill-equipped to fight a dragon. He barely knew how to swing a sword. Ali, quietly took a step back, his eyes scanning for a possibly escape route.

Suluksati slumped, relieved. A single dragon that survived such an encounter was a victory for her. She had so few victories of any kind, that the bar was very low.

A Ysali survived. Her efforts had not been wholly in vain. She stretched, rumbling, and turned to the Orderite boy, studying him with her amber eyes. He seemed frightened... of her?

Well, she was big, and scary, and quite intimidating. Fear was something she had learned to cultivate, and it was her most effective weapon: a scared dragon lived another day. A scared hunter fled and spared the lives they would have taken... or, they missed their killing blow or dropped their guard at a crucial moment and, well, that worked too.

But the Orderite child had just been through an ordeal, unprepared as they apparently were for a dragon attack. She scrutinized them for a moment, inspecting them closely, before finally speaking.

“I mean you no harm.” she said, deciding that on the spot. She did not, after all, hurt children. She sat on her haunches, watching him, “However, if you are injured, I can help.”

Alionse entire body froze up as the dragon pinned its gaze on him. He swallowed, sure that there was no way he could escape. His hand tight on a knife that seemed useless. Then everything changed when the dragon spoke. He blinked in surprise, both at the declaration and that it had spoken in the first place. Slowly, it began to dawn on him what was actually happening. This wasn't a dragon, well at least not like the other ones. This was a Khehora. He had just recently met one, though it had been much smaller than this one. Just the sight of her was intimidating and despite knowing the dragon was a Khehora didn't change that it was still dangerous.

Studying the dragon, Alionse slowly shook his head. "I'm not injured." And he wasn't. He had fallen, probably had some scrapes and bruises, but nothing he considered needing healing The Khehora had taken care of the dragons before anything could happen to him. He was both grateful with her and annoyed with himself. He hated how he couldn't managed to take care of himself, how he needed to always be saved. Tightening his jaw, he promised himself that next time he'll fight them himself and win.

Firm in his decision he looked back at the dragon, still cautious, but not as fearful as before. "Are you a Khehora?" Though he was sure the dragon was, he wanted the confirmation, just in case.

Suluksati watched him move, assessing his condition and seeing, for herself, that he was indeed unharmed. “I am.” she said, still watching him intently, “I am of the Aedaun clan and the Alikhora breed.” Though those facts were obvious from her feathers and her magic, she wanted to make sure they were named and understood.

“And you.” she squinted, “You are a young Orderite.”

There. Introductions had been made. Species had been named. All was well, and so Suluksati switched to the teachable moment.

“Were you hunting those dragons, child?” she asked, a little threateningly, though she wasn't trying to be too threatening. Truly, she wasn't... though if he was scared the lesson might go easier.

Alionse took in what she said about being from the Aedaun clan and an Alikhora breed. He wasn't sure what any of that meant, but he committed it to memory anyway. He nodded his head at her statement. "Yes, I'm a Orderite."

When she asked him if he was hunting the dragons he frowned. She said it almost like a threat. He didn't like where this was going. If she would simply start to attack him depending on what he said, then it was better to end the conversation as quickly as possible. So in the end he decided not to answer the question at all.

Instead he looked at her quietly and then spoke softly. "Are you planning to hurt me?"

“No.” she said, though the predatory fierceness in her eyes made it clear that she very easily could, if she wanted to. “I plan to open your eyes, child.” she looked out at the carnage they had wrought – all blood and no bodies, as was the way of dragons. “No matter what your elders taught you, this did not need to happen. This was a waste of vibrant lives, as disgraceful as killing an animal for only its pelt or it's head. That dragons must be hunted and killed indiscriminately is a lie you do not need to follow.” she turned back to him, watching him. “You killed them in self defense. You hunted them on a lie. I forgive you for this...” she fixed him with her amber gaze, “Will you let me teach you the truth?”

She wasn't going to hurt him or at least that's what she said. The look she was giving him said it was debatable. Then she began to speak and he couldn't help feeling like her words seemed a bit off, especially since she didn't seem to be taking any responsibility for the killings, especially since she did most of the killing.

He frowned. "I hunt them for dragon orbs mostly." He tilted his head. "And dragons will hunt us right back. It's rare for them to leave us alone if we were just passing by." He folded his arms. "And you killed them too."

He paused. He didn't feel he needed forgiveness and was going to say such, but stopped himself. She was still very dragon-like and he didn't want to be eaten. Still it bothered him. He felt like he was being bullied.

"Do I have a choice about whether I listen or will you kill me if I don't?"

“I do not kill... children.” she said. Though, he appeared to be particularly stubborn. Perhaps she should shove him around a little, scare him more. If words alone failed then that would be what needed to be done. “And I killed them because they attacked you. I do not like to see the young falling prey to the foolishness of their elders. I have killed adult magescians before – they were stubborn and stupid and territorial, as if the dragons they hunted were already their property. But not children. Never children. I want them... you... to understand, and the dead can learn nothing more. The same for dragons: Ysali are the more cautious of the dragons – those that escaped will remember this encounter and, perhaps, think twice before attacking a khehora or, even, a lone Orderite. Those dragons will teach this to their hatchlings. They will breed and grow and care for this forest, which would not be so healthy and beautiful without their magic. Nor the air so clean, the earth so fertile, or the world so beautiful and as full of magic and wonder as it is... So yes, I killed them. I kill in self defense, child. There is nothing wrong in defending oneself.” She looked at him imperiously, “It is the hunt that is wrong, to kill them for the magic they bear, or the thrill that their chase and desperate fight offers. They hunt you because it is their nature to do so. That is not why they are hunted in turn...”

She sighed, a loud, resigned chuffing sound. “I suppose you do not have to listen to me. I could even allow you to leave, and I will not kill you – that would make the deaths I have already caused in vain. But I want you to at least have this: Our world is magic. Our very existence in this world is magic. It is all around us. But what would happen if the dragons – ancient incarnations of the magic of our world, and it's chief custodians – were all destroyed? What would happen to our world? To your culture, so reliant on the collection of dragon orbs? To the creatures of the world, created with the idea of dragons to keep their numbers in check?”
