Though he had been born and raised in this land, and wandered as much as he could as a colt, Arioso knew he had not yet experienced the full breadth of the land. As such, he took advantage of his longer legs and increased stamina to wander more as a young stallion. He had made many interesting friends in his foalhood, and hoped that would continue to hold true now that he wandered as an adult. So far he had also managed to largely avoid danger, a feat in itself which amazed his granddam even as she scolded him for making her worry.

She didn't really look that worried, and the scoldings were never severe, so Arioso figured it was largely to appease his father's protective nature. Nana Whistle would much rather have him wander and learn, even if it did make her son unbearably cross when he had to go looking for his missing foal. Most of the time she helped Arioso get to where he wanted to go, answered his questions, taught him various lessons. But sometimes she seemed to think that his wandering alone was best, and provided Arioso the opportunity to slip away while she distracted his father with this or that.

Now that he was grown his lessons with her were decreasing, allowing him more time to wander. In Whistle's mind it would be best of he experienced other cultures, learned other lessons, from those best qualified to teach them. The trouble was, he didn't always know who or what those experts were until he crossed paths with them. On the one hand it was endlessly exciting, on the other, he still felt like a colt stumbling around in the dark.

"But enough of that for now." He murmured to himself, shaking off his wandering thoughts and picking up a lope that sped him through the quiet forest. "Where to go today, and what to learn, and from whom?"

User ImageIf her stocky draft build didn't make Azizah's hoof-falls heavy and trudging, the metaphorical storm cloud constantly hanging over her head certainly did. She stomped through the trees with a look of one who'd just bitten into a very sour apple on her face. Though you'd never hear her admit it, the biggest reason for her bad mood at this moment was the fact that it had been months since she'd really interacted with another soquili. She was lonely. And it was her own fault. She'd seen plenty of other soquili around but she'd always try to avoid them or acted so grumpy that they soon gave up on conversation and left her to continue brooding. Which was fine, she didn't want to talk to them anyways. Who wanted to talk to a soquili who was so chipper and friendly all the time? It was exhausting and irritating. She just wished she could come across others who didn't drag an eagle's talons across her nerves whenever they spoke. It wasn't that demanding of a request, was it?

Yes. Yes it was. Literally everyone she'd ever met gave her the urge to shove them off a cliff. The only exception was her mother and even then their relationship wasn't the greatest. Azizah was difficult and she knew it. She also knew that if she didn't want to be alone forever she'd have to make a lot of changes. It was just a lot to ask of someone who'd spent her whole life having to be offensive and rude. The fact that she was caught in a vicious cycle didn't help matters either. Feeling lonely made her angry, which in turn made her grumpier when others came around, which then chased them off and made her feel even lonelier. Even now, as she could hear the distinct sound of running hooves in the distance, Azizah felt herself getting irritated. Irritated because she was getting excited too. Which was stupid. There was nothing to get excited about. This interaction, if it even happened, would end up like every other one and she'd wind up feeling even worse afterwards. It was so frustrating to have such conflicting emotions. Everything was frustrating.

Arioso moved with a light step, his strides graceful and poised like a dancer's. Though he had been trained in the skill as part of his upbringing amongst his family, he rarely put the skill to use. Like his father, Arioso tended to favor spinning stories over dancing, though on occasion he could be prevailed upon to sing. Regardless, the music in his blood made him graceful, and he moved with a sort of quiet joy matched only bright e bright glow of his coat and markings and horn.

Speeding along through the forest in content silence, he rounded a corner and slid to an abrupt halt that almost had him sitting on his hindquarters. There was a draft mare up the trail, and he certainly didn't want to be right in her face before he stopped. As it was he slid a stride's worth two, but managed to halt himself well out of her range.

"Sorry about that, I didn't know you were here." He offered with a grin as he gathered his hooves under him and straightened himself back out. "Forgive me if I'm interrupting anything, I was just wandering..."

He trailed off at the sight of her strange eyes and the leonine tail, abruptly reminded of his sire. It was both exciting and unnerving, mostly because she did not look at all amused and he was worried he'd just managed to upset her further. 'Nice going, Ari... Nana is gonna give you a refresher on manners, and Papa will lecture about watching where you're going, just you wait...'

"I'm Arioso Canto Faythren." He offered with a hesitant smile. "Most just call me Arioso. May I have your name, My Lady?"

Azizah threw her head back as a stallion came sliding around the corner. In all honesty, she was a bit impressed that he managed to stay on his hooves the entire time. Not impressed enough to override the irritation at almost being run into. That was two points against him already, seeing as everyone started off at least one point in the red with Azizah. And it didn't take long for this stallion to rack up the points. Not with his greatest downfall- in her eyes- glowing bright and brilliant right in front of her face. That asset granted him so many points there wasn't a number high enough to express them all.

And oh, how her blood boiled at the sight of that pointed horn atop his head. Anger and disgust and frustration all bubbling to the top until she had to let out some of the pressure with the most indignant snort. No amount of pleasantries or manners could save him now, "Watch where you're going! You could poke someone's eye out with that." She made a point to look at the horn with as much displeasure as she could muster. Which was a lot, "And what do you need to know my name for? That's not really any of your business, now is it?"

Had she taken just a moment to look him over, Azizah might have realized that the two of them shared something. The stallion's long, braided tail would have told her that, like herself, he was a half-breed. Whether or not this would make her instantly hate him more or less could be debated. But as it stood, she saw nothing of him but that accursed horn. Glowing so brightly, as if to mock her. As if to say: Look at what you don't have. Look at what you have agonized over your entire life. She wanted to tear it from his head, stomp it into dust and toss the pulverized particles into the river.

Of course, she wouldn't. For all her rage- and for all the fights she'd gotten herself into- she had never struck another Soquili unless they struck first. Physically or verbally. And while she would like to claim that this thing the stallion was been born with, and thus had no control over, was reason enough, she knew it wasn't. She knew she'd have to hold everything back until he left or until he gave her a reason to let it all out. She was hoping for the latter. Trying to take anger out on a tree wasn't nearly as satisfying as taking it out on the cause. With any luck, he would be as quick to anger as she was.

Not his most graceful entrance, Arioso had to admit, but he'd stopped well before hitting her and he'd kept his feet doing it. So it looked like some of the grace and dexterity exercises he'd been working on were certainly paying off. He'd probably tell his father about the scenario, assuming he remembered once all was said and done.

For all that he had been threatened and chased and hunted and almost eaten, Arioso had never met someone who was so flat out rude in all of his life. It left the young stallion somewhat bewildered, so he skittered backwards half a pace and flattened his ears as he stared down at the strange mare in shock. Mostly because he was a gentleman and had been raised not to react to her in a way that she most certainly deserved right about then.

"I was watching where I was going!" He defended himself reflexively. "But there was a curve in the path and you certainly weren't making much noise. I can't see the future, or around a corner!"

His ears flattened further at her crack about his horn, tail snapping from side to side in annoyance. Well that was just rude, rude and uncalled for. And for all that she was technically correct -he was war trained as well as a healer- that didn't mean that he'd do such a thing on accident. If the day ever came that he put someone's eye out with his horn, it would be absolutely on purpose and likely in the middle of war when he had no other option.

Not that he'd tell her any of that.

"Fine then, forget I asked for your name." He barked instead, and in his spike of temper both his eyes and horn flashed brightly. "I don't much have need of it anyway."

Stepping to one side with precise grace, Arioso jerked his head at the path. "Don't let me stop you from wherever you have to be in such an all-fired hurry that you forgot your manners when you left!"

Sorry about the delay, her reply stumped him for a bit.

Azizah snorted irritably at his pathetic excuses. Oh, boohoo, I couldn't see around the bend. Waah, I'm too deaf to hear you stomping around. You didn't need eagle vision or a rabbit's ears to notice her. She was big, especially for a mare, and she certainly didn't prance around on dainty little hooves. Obviously this stallion just wasn't paying attention. It was as simple as that. And that was definitely the reason she was so short with him. It had absolutely nothing to do with anything else, especially not his heritage.

And on top of not paying attention, he was being quite rude. Even if Azizah herself had been the crude one first, it didn't excuse his behavior. Two wrongs don't make a right, after all. Naturally, this logic didn't apply to her. It was in her nature- part of who she was- to be snarky and rude and just generally unpleasant to be around. She couldn't be faulted for who she was. Not in her opinion anyways, and that was the only one that mattered. So, as long as he added fuel to her already raging fire, she would continue with her insulting attitude.

It didn't help that her remark about his horn seemed to hit a soft spot. This brought her an immense amount of joy and inspired her to completely ignore any of his other comments and focus entirely on that. Rare was the opportunity to make a unicorn uncomfortable about their horn and Azizah certainly wasn't going to pass this one up.

"What, you worried you're going to hurt someone with that horn of yours? Funny, I thought they were supposed to be for healing. Wouldn't be surprised if you've done more harm than good with that thing." The expression on her face was cruel. She was letting all that contempt for her herd boil to the surface and making this stallion face the brunt of it. Usually she was much better at keeping all of this suppressed, for the most part. Today just seemed to be an exceptionally bad day for running into someone with a horn. Undoubtedly, she would look back on her behavior and be quite ashamed. Then promptly try to pretend it never happened instead of reflecting and trying to avoid this in the future. Running from her mistakes was so much easier than coming to terms with them.

But, for the moment, she was lost to the pains of her past and no amount of reflecting was going to happen any time soon. She'd much rather delude herself into believing that this stallion was a jerk who deserved what was coming to him. A thought that really applied better to this broken mare.

It was rude for a stallion to kick a mare, right? Or to bite her? Because Arioso really, really wanted to bite this one... Just a little n**, really? Enough to knock that mulish expression off her face and maybe snap her out of whatever tif she was in, because honestly he hadn't done anything harmful at all. And it certainly wasn't malicious. And yet she was going off on him! Stomping and snorting and being very genuinely unpleasant, and making him want to bite her. But he was fairly certain several of his Nana's lectures had including things like manners, and even if this mare didn't have them, Arioso did. So he shouldn't kick her. Or bite her.

Right?

Ugh.

"Trust me, if I wanted to hurt you with my horn, you'd be hurt." He snapped back, temper frayed as he pinned his ears flat. "And if I wanted to, it'd be on purpose and you wouldn't have time to yell about it. As it stands, you're yelling about something that didn't even happen, and in that situation that very-nearly-occurred-but-didn't we're both equally guilty. But nothing happened, so I fail to see what all the fuss is about!"

He puffed up a bit, all righteous fury at her words, drawing a deep breath to continue his response. "And further more you are correct in your suggestions though certainly not in the way you intend, so I really don't mind correcting you! You're right, I am a warrior, and I can do more harm than good when I so choose, which doesn't often occur because the world is largely peaceful. Then again, if everyone greeted everyone the way you did, I'm sure there'd be a lot more stabbing and a lot less healing going on in the world."

In a huff he gave a half-rear so he could slam his forehooves into the ground with enough fury to appease his temper, glaring at her with bright cyan eyes. "And now you've gone and made me speak to a mare the way I never wished to, so congratulations on that as well!"

Well he's sweet but not a push over... So hopefully this temper fit will blow over quickly? ^.^;;

Oh, listen to the big, bad stallion. I'm a warrior. I could hurt you if I wanted to. But of course he didn't want to. Too pure for that, too noble, right? It made her sick. Unicorns always waltzed around like they were some holy beings sent from the stars. So perfect and innocent, except when you didn't meet their standards. When you weren't perfect like them. Azizah was projecting a great deal onto this stallion and his words weren't getting through to her at all. The only thing she could hear now was the constant mockery of those from her old herd. It burned in her ears and twisted everything that came from his mouth. He sounded just like the rest of them to her.

Thankfully, being enraged was a huge energy sink and soon the loud voice, the swishing tail, and the toothy snarl all simmered down into snarky comments and eye rolling. When you're a constant ball of frustrated energy, it doesn't take much to wear you out. Azizah gave one last snort and looked off into the forest as if she were suddenly disinterested in the stallion. "Oh, goodie. Do I get a prize. I hope it's something fun." The sarcasm in her voice was so thick it could give even the foggiest of days a run for its money. Having a horn was bad enough. Acting like she should be treated a certain way because she was a mare was almost enough to kickstart the fire again. Almost.

And perhaps another factor into her dwindling anger was that some part of her was beginning to realize how much she overreacted. After all, no one had been hurt. The two of them hadn't even made contact. And he had immediately apologized. Obviously no offense was meant in their accidental meeting. Even if he was a unicorn-

A half-unicorn. Azizah only now noticed the silken white strands neatly braided at his rump. He didn't bear the lion-like tail that she did. It was a bit of a slap to the face, really. A big, bright sign saying 'You're an idiot'. Azizah was sinking into herself. That shame was creeping up a lot faster than she was expecting it to and this stallion would get to witness it if she didn't do something quickly. "Well, whatever. I suppose I can accept you apology for nearly running into me and we can call it a day." It was snippy and a bit rude, but it was something. She certainly wasn't going to admit she was wrong and had jumped the gun. Even if she was desperate to get out of this situation now. It would take something a lot more powerful than some shame to get a confession like that out of her.
