It had been a little while since KD and Willie spent a night exploring the old hospital. Their discovery had shocked her and afterward she told Arias all about it and her suspicions about it, the Negaverse kind. He cautioned her to steer clear, which she was more than happy to do, staying well away when she patrolled. It was the only sensible thing to do.
She called up Willie, though, unable to really stop thinking about him and that night. It was a new friendship but she thought she was really starting to like him. Like, like him, like him. Thinking of him made her stomach get butterflies and her heart do that weird thumping thing that it usually did just before she went down the first hill on a roller coaster. It made her feel like she was short of breath and her face flushed at odd times, imagining them both doing things together.
Maybe it was a crush.
She invited him over to her house on a Sunday night to watch the Princess Bride movie so he’d know why she called him Westley. Their house had a rec room down in the finished basement so she figured they could be undisturbed down there. Her parents were pretty liberal but she was pretty sure they’d want to know she was in the house with a boy, even if they’d try to give her her space.
She’d even dressed for it like she thought maybe it was a date, even though it was no such thing. She was trying, at least, and fretted in front of her mirror waiting for him, debating changing her outfit a hundred times and never making it to her closet.

Willie had avoided the hospital as well for the time being, but his curiosity was growing and growing and he debated texting Ida about it and seeing what she thought. He had yet to do it if only because he wasn’t sure what the eternal would think and didn’t really want to be told to stay away from the hospital because he doubted he would be able to.
Today however he was going to visit KD and watch a movie with her, which was nice and something he had been looking forward to. His opinion was that KD was awesome and he very much liked his new friend. She was exciting and fun. She called him Westley, but even that was fine, too. He pulled up to her house and texted her to let her know he was there before getting out of the car and going up to the door and knocking.
He tried to be extra presentable because this is was the first time he had been invited to someone’s house that wasn’t a farmer. He only felt a tiny bit self conscious. Just a tiny bit, he didn’t doubt it would go away when they got to watching the movie.

It wasn’t KD that answered the door. She was too slow to get the text while she adjusted her hair for the fifth and final time. Once she heard the knock she realized what was about to happen and rushed downstairs from her room to try and keep as little contact between her father and Willie as possible. But for now…
“So you must be Westley.”
Mr. Brenden moved away from the door to allow him to come in, looking tall and just a little intimidating. He wasn’t very good at that, though, considering he was not big or strong. He was not even really aggressive. He sold real estate for Pete’s sake and that was why they had a pretty nice house, all things considered. He’d found just the right one before it went to market and got a good deal on it.
“Come in, young man. It’s not often I meet Caydence’s friends. What are your plans for the night?”
She looked in horror as the got to the foyer.
“Daddy!” Immediately KD rushed to his rescue. “We’re watching a movie in the rec room. It’s not even rated R. Please try to pretend that you’re cool!”
She sounded mortified.

Willie looked at the man that opened the door and straightened up a bit, when he said that Willie was Westley, he quietly corrected him, “KD just calls me that; my name’s actually William. But Westley works to I guess; KD seems to like it. I don’t mind.”
Willie entered the house, wiping his feet first and trying to appear as well mannered and respectful, as he was raised to be. “It’s nice to meet you,” he started before KD interrupted and Willie felt a little relieved. “Yes, just like she said, we’re just going to watch a movie.”
He looked at KD and gave a grin, “you look nice,” he noted walking over to her. “To the rec room then.”

“Thanks.”
She squeed internally at the compliment and bit her lower lip nervously, a habit her father knew very well but Willie would not be as familiar with. She got them both some soda and popcorn and then took him down the back stairs to the basement, which looked more like another living room than anything.
“The pantry’s through there,” she explained, indicating a big door to their right. “Mom cans and preserves everything. She and dad are really hippies, not that you can tell by the house.”
Though, other than that, they had the room to themselves. There weren’t windows except two slat windows across the basement for escape, should it be necessary. The TV was against the wall with an old plaid couch in front of it. She set the popcorn on the coffee table and moved to put the movie in.
“You’ll like it. It’s really good.”
And, just maybe, then he’d understand why she chose to call him Westley.

Willie grinned at KD and followed her watching as she got the snacks. He didn’t really have the heart to tell her he wasn't overly fond of either item and wondered if she would notice. He gave a small laugh at her comment about her parents, “your mom would probably get along well with mine. Maybe in the summer or late spring you all can come up for a day on farm. It might be fun. And we can go swimming and maybe ride Odys again.”
He moved over to the couch and sat down, not really caring in all honesty what it looked like. Willie was like that, most of his life all his furniture was crazy lived in, but in most recent years they had updated things since their boy were mostly grown and not ruining everything.
He looked to KD and grinned, “I haven't done this sort of thing yet since I started school in the city. Even my classmates want to study and do project work at home. I’m just like I would rather do this in living room and we can have dinner and hang around later, but no one seems to feel that way.”
He just shook his head and sat back.

“Well, you’re hanging out now so enjoy it.”
She sat on the couch beside him, a carefully appropriate distance away, and popped open her soda. The movie started and at once KD was absorbed with shining eyes. This movie was important to her, a film she practically was raised on. She knew the entire thing by heart and though she identified with Inigo more than Buttercup she still found the film enjoyable.
And, anyway, all he had to know was why she called him Westley. As far as appearance went they had a decent bit in common. The blond hair and the title of “farm boy.” But it was the affection with which she called him Westley that was important because Westley was the film’s hero and a damn impressive guy, by movie standards. She could only hope he’d get it.
She the beginning wore on she scooted a little closer to him, on the pretense that she needed to be close to share the popcorn, though, after a while, she noticed he wasn’t having any.

Willie smiled at KD, a genuine smile, “I am very much enjoying it KD.”
As the movie started he turned his eyes to the screen. It didn’t take long for him to start grinned because the ‘farm boy’s’ name was Westley. He raised an eyebrow at KD and grinned before turning back to the movie. He was amused by the interactions between Buttercup and Westley, and was excited for the adventure part of the movie to begin and then he was dead??
“I’m guessing he doesn't really die, or at least im really hoping not because that would kind of blow,” he said with a bit of a laugh, amusement glittering in his eyes as he turned back to the movie before KD asked him about popcorn.
“I’m not terrible fond of anything processed. Never really had it to be honest. I like freshly popped popcorn with a little bit of fresh butter and a dash of salt. Its best that way. I hope thats okay. I’m not trying to be rude, I swear. Thank you for offering though.”
He felt like he was being rude at the moment by not eating it, and that was the last thing he wanted, but hoped KD didn’t mind.

“You’re guessing right. Watch the movie, Westley!”
She nudged him playfully, watching as Fezzini was on the screen. She was very fond of this movie and of all of the actors in it. It was a fairy tale, but in her mind it was a true tale, one that could actually happen with hardship and betrayal and genuine conflict before happily ever after. She never believed in fairies like in the Disney movies, come to fix everything magically. She was of the opinion that it all rested on the will of the two people involved.
Still, she acted quickly to stop a shudder when he explained why he didn’t eat popcorn.
“I’m not offended.”
But she was embarrassed. She should have known better. He grew up on a farm, of course he didn’t like processed food! She could have sunk into the ground… There was probably only one thing that could save her and thankfully it was in the pantry behind them, her mom’s county fair award winning spiced peaches. She jarred them all summer when the fruit was in season and perfectly ripe. People loved them. Maybe he would, too.

He watched as the story unfolded before him, amused by the interactions between the grandfather and grandson. The interjections amused him very highly. He looked to KD and felt slightly better that she wasn’t insulted. He gave a grin and looked back to the screen before she asked about peaches and regained his attention. “Yes, I like peaches. Do you have some?”
He certainly wouldn’t mind a peach at the moment. Or really any fruit. He wasn’t terribly picky about that sort of thing. Most people didn’t realize how different things tasted made from scratch and prepared with time and love because it was a big difference to him.
“Have you ever had peach jam on biscuits? It’s really good! My mom makes it for breakfast sometimes. I really love it. One of the first things I ever learned to make, well other than bacon and sausage. Those are really easy to cook.”
Willie turned back to the screen trying not to laugh at the short little rat and his rantings. “Inconceivable,” he mocked lightly.

“You know, I do not think that means what you think it means,” she replied, almost in time with Inigo.
KD smiled and got up from the couch, moving into the large walk in pantry behind them to produce a jar of her mom’s peaches. She went upstairs to break the seal and brought down a bowl and a spoon. The peaches were soft and spiced with her mother’s secret blend that she had not yet learned but would have to someday if she wanted to keep up with Willie. She really did want to impress him.
“Here. These are mom’s recipe but she’s famous for them.”
She really hoped he liked it.

He laughed when KD parroted Inigo pretty much in time with him, watching as orders were given and he took off. He was a bit shocked at the offer to helped the masked man which he kinda figured to be Westley, or at least he was hoping. It was very sportsmanlike and it made him hmmm lightly.
KD got up and Willie’s eyes followed her briefly before turning back to the screen. When she came back the sword fight was going and he was absorbed because swordfight. He was handed some peaches and he gave KD a bright smile as he tried them. “Thank you,” he said tasting them before his eyes went wide, “these are great.”
It took everything in him not to devour them like a pig, but he was with KD and he would very much like to not embarrass himself. He grinned as the sword fight ended and of course Westley won. It made him feel a bit prideful that KD gave him the nickname, but he didn’t feed too much into it. “This is awesome,” he said quickly, “it would be nice to be able to sword fight like that. I think my mom would die, if I picked up the habit. The bike course is enough of a heart attack for her. You should come see it, maybe this weekend?”

“Sure. I’d like that.”
The best KD could do was shoot a bow and arrow and she was actually rather proud of that skill. Not a lot of people had it these days and she’d won a few local tournaments with it. She even got to show off at the Renaissance Faire every year in front of a crowd. It was kind of cheesy but fun and as close to real life roleplaying as she was likely to get. Otherwise, it was strictly table top for her.
Anyway, that wasn’t sword fighting.
“Maybe someday I’ll teach you how to shoot a bow. It’s very calming, at least for me.”
Her insides were twisting a little because she really liked this boy and wasn’t sure if it was ok to make that known. She really liked spending time with him and he seemed to like spending time with her but she was a dunce with romance and worried that anything might be construed as too soon.
Dilemmas…

Willie gave a huge grin excited that KD would be coming to see bike course and maybe she would want to ride with him. He was excited because their chance meeting was turning into the best friendship and he couldn't help, but to just be a little on cloud nine. He munched a bit more on the peaches, enjoying the taste. They were quite lovely and went very well with movie night, in his opinion.
He settled back to watch the movie once more, but found it a little hard to focus because his mind excited kept jumping to the weekend even as the Westley poisoned rat face and saved Buttercup. He tried not to laugh at the odd jack and jill scene that soon came up, but after it him was thinking about the weekend again and looked to KD who mentioned teaching him how to shoot a bow.
“I would be completely up for learning that! Have you ever ridden a 3wheeler, 4 wheeler or a dirt bike?” He doubted it, but she was adventurous so it wasn't that far of a stretch. At the very least her answer would gage whether she would want to try it out if she hadnt already. If not they had neat go carts they could use as well. Everyone liked go karts.

“No, I’ve never ridden those. I wouldn’t even know where…”
She lived in a nice neighborhood without the benefit of any bike trails or places to ride dirt bikes. She rode a regular bike but was pretty sure that wasn’t the same thing. She found her excitement where she could, for being a city gal. More and more these days that included taking on a youma or two but she was trying to roll with that as well.
“Westley, would you maybe…” She frowned, trying to come up with the courage to ask. “Would you maybe want to come to a paint party with me sometime?”
It wasn’t like she hadn’t thought about it. She had, obsessively, for the past few days. She liked him, a lot. A lot more than other boys she’d met. A lot more than she had anyone else she considered liking romantically. Maybe not as much as Arias, but he was like her brother and didn’t count.
“It’s a lot of fun. When you get there they give you a white tee shirt and everywhere there’s paint and markers and everyone there is wearing white shirts and you paint on theirs and they paint on yours and at the end of the night you have a masterpiece...or a disaster.”
She bit her lower lip again, wondering and fearing that he’d say no. Or, worse, if he said yes! This was all very dire stuff.
“Like, on a date?”

Willie was suddenly a little confused because KD was stuttering, or rather her sentence was broken with a pause. When she asked about a paint party, he was curious. He was no artist so he didn’t think anything he’d come up with would be nice, but after she explained, he thought it sounded really fun and he was definitely game for it. He was about to tell her he would love to go then she uttered the word date and his entire face went red.
He hadn’t been expecting that, he honestly hadn't thought even with the movie that KD might see him that way and he was slightly embarrassed about not catching on, but then his mind made a bit of left turn because she asked him on a date. KD asked him on a date and he wasn’t sure when the last time anyone asked him out or vice versa. KD was definitely a pretty girl, pretty and cool, and adventurous and perfect. He honestly didn’t know why she wanted to go out with him.
“I … yeah sure. I would really like to … uh really enjoy that. A date.”
He was going on a date with KD. A date.

“Ok.”
She let out a relieved laugh, blushing deeply as she did. She went from tense to relaxed to tense again as he said yes. Maybe she’d melt into a puddle right there. She hoped not but could not be certain. It certainly did not feel like she was safe from that right now with everything feeling good and off balance. She really liked him.
Then she realized she was staring, and blushing, and was probably acting like an idiot. She shook herself out of it quickly and moved away to face him a bit better.
“I’ll look to see when the next one is. They do them about once a month. I’m really excited, Westley.”
Really, really excited.
And it wasn’t like they weren’t going to see each other in the meantime. She was going over this weekend and at some point out to the farm with her family only after coaching them on everything not to do to completely embarrass her in front of this boy she liked
But she was getting ahead of herself.
“So, this weekend, too. You’ll have to show me how to ride a big wheeler, I mean a 4 by 4 or whatever.”
Though probably not the dirt bike.

That was far easier that Willie thought that sort of thing was suppose to be. She asked, he accepted, and they were going to go. He’d asked someone before and that sort of ended in disaster and someone asked him before sort of. The girl kinda gave up mid-sentence and her friend later told him what that was all about. He grinned when she said she was excited and that made him feel really good.
“Yeah, just let me know. I bet we will have a lot of fun. I will be the best night. “Yes, I can show you. It’s not too hard. I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it easy. We have go carts to though, if you dont like it then we can do that. Maybe even have a race with my brothers!”

“A race?”
She’d raced go carts at amusement parks, sure, but not really on open tracks. She wasn’t afraid, just nervous, against people that probably did this more often than she did. She put on a brave face, sure that Willie wouldn’t lead her into anything bad.
“Caydence, wrap it up young lady! It’s late and a school night!”
She looked toward the stairs and groaned. Her dad was SO UNCOOL! What was she? 12? With a chagrinned look she stood up, dusting herself off. She offered him her hand, willing to clean up once he’d gone. It wasn’t too late but her dad worried she was sure, though she wasn’t sure why. He didn’t seem to mind when she camped out overnight with Arias.
Parent logic…
“So, pick me up this weekend?”

“Yup a race. My brothers and I race all the time. They are a silly bunch, but I think you will like they and maybe you will kick their butts at go karts!” Willie laughed lightly and grinned at her before freezing at hearing her dad yell down. He certainly didn’t want to make her father mad, probably best for him to like Willie.
He gave KD a sheepish look and before eyes the direction where the voice came from. When she asked or rather stated in a way to pick her up on the weekend he nodded. “As you wish,” he said with a grin winking at her before getting up.
“Probably not a good idea to make your dad mad, so I shall take my leave and I will see you on the weekend.”
