Dumah stared upward. The sky was a sickly shade of green, clouds hanging heavy and ominous. A storm was coming, that was obvious. Wind whipped through his his mane, and the first droplets were already coming down. They hit wetly against the leaves underhoof, the green of spring not yet having reached the underbrush. He heard distant thunder, and a yelp of some small animal frightened by the sound. The storm grew closer.

He felt something clink against his golden helm. Blinking, he shook his head. That felt more like a pebble than a raindrop. Then, something bounced off his back. He started to turn to look, but quickly realized he didn't have to. These weren't pebbles, they were hail. They were small, no larger than a kernel of corn. But... hail? In springtime? Young as he was, Dumah didn't understand the meaning of these weather signs. He just blinked in confusion as the hail began to come down faster, littering the ground around him with glassy marbles of ice.

What sort of storm was this?

Akkhana's wings beat fiercely against the rising winds. A storm was coming, and a bad one at that. She could smell it in the air, and feel it in the way the gusts howled through her. She gritted her teeth, fangs protruding next to blunt incisors. She was trying to get home to the Padmapani herd before the storm fell upon her, but it was starting to look like that wouldn't happen. She had at least an hour of flight left, and the rain was already starting to pick up. If the storm forced her to ground now, she'd be trapped alone in unknown territory for a stormy night. Soquili had gotten hurt under much less dangerous circumstances before...

Something white streaked past in front of her. Akkhana squinted, and saw a similar object follow it. She had come from a more northern homeland, and she immediately recognized it. Hail! Bitterly, she realized that if it was hailing, she needed to land. It would only get worse, and this sort of weather could get worse fast. She started to dip downwards, and then the stray blast of wind caught her. She yelled out in pain as one of her wings was wrenched too far forward from the force of it, and suddenly the ground below her was tilting sickeningly... and approaching all too fast...

Hermes had a bad bad feeling about the weather. It had been so beautiful just an hour ago, blue-skied with fluffy white clouds that looked soft enough to sleep on. Unfortunately, weather changed. Weather changed especially quickly in these months of spring, when life was renewing and storms were brewing.

He had many miles to go before he reached home, and suspected that this was the case with the other soquili in the sky as well. He saw some sort of pink wind cross not too far in front of him. He'd seen a very strange-silhouetted mare far off a while ago, but didn't know if she was still in the area. Now, he was focused on flying as fast as he could. He didn't like the look of these rolling hills, with peaks that would invite lightning to strike, and low places that looked like a flood could just roll through. He didn't want to weather the storm out here, but it was starting to look like he didn't have much of a choice.

A particularly strong blast of wind tore at him, but he was a strong flier. He bore it out, even though it ripped through his long mane with enough force to carry strands away with it. Hail was beginning to fall as well, but he had flown through worse. He could manage this... but the pink mare in front of him was less fortunate. He saw that something had happened to her, and now she was spiraling downwards without control. She was going to crash!

Hermes' heart felt like it leaped into his mouth, but he didn't hesitate. He dove towards the falling mare, knowing that he might be about to witness her death...

"It is all right, Fuuka," cooed Emiko to her nervous cat. She could tell that Fuuka was in a very bad state. The cat had climbed onto her back, clinging to the fabric of her obi with sharp claws set. Something about the oncoming storm petrified the poor little creature, and so far, none of Emiko's reassurances seemed to help. Fuuka mewed piteously as the rain droplets soaked into her fur, making Emiko's heart wrench with pity.

"Don't worry. We'll find somewhere dry, and then maybe I'll practice one of the songs for the festival." Her training was good enough that she was able to keep her tone light and cheerful, though her heart was less than so. The sky was as green as a serpent's eyes. She had seen that sort of green in the sky before, and the connection to that memory filled her with dread. She had hardened enough in these Kawani lands that she could stay brave when caught outside in a storm, but this storm was...

Hail. Hail began to fall. Emiko felt a much greater fear waking up within her, one that felt like it was uncoiling inside her like some sort of beast. Hail clinked off her scales, but that wasn't what made her shiver. What set her fear to galloping in her heart was a different sound, one of distant howling winds. She remembered these signs. She remembered the time in her homeland, when the storm had started like this, and ended like the sword of the gods had come crashing down to the earth. This was no mere storm. This was a-

"Tornado," she whispered, legs trembling beneath her. "Fuuka, hold on!" she yelled, surging forward into a desperate gallop.

Tornado! Diantha realized what it was just an instant after Emiko, though she had no way of knowing who else out there shared in her terrifying epiphany. She stood atop a bare hilltop, facing west. She had landed ahead of the storm, deciding that she would continue the way to her half-brother Dumah's home on the ground. Only here, she stopped. In the sky she could see it forming there, a spiral of cloud twisting down from a greater mass of floating darkness. This first attempt dissipated, winds not enough to sustain itself. However, the second iteration was already appearing, and it grew... and grew... and grew.

Diantha watched, frozen with a morbid fascination. She had heard of tornadoes and seen their damage. She had a faint memory of her mother sheltering her and her siblings during one, recalling glimpses of blowing debris through her mother's protecting wings. This was the first time she had seen one in adulthood, and she couldn't stop watching it. It quested downwards like some curious worm, seemed to hesitate for a moment, and then touched down. It entered the treeline, and immediately she could see branches and leaves being torn and whirled into that maelstrom. In that moment, she was fascinated. She forgot even that she should fear it, in awe of its becoming.

Nervously, Bernadette hurried her way through the forest. Unlike the others, she had grounded herself at the first sign of trouble. She was a weak flier, and had had close calls in inclement weather before. Ever since then, she had made sure to only fly on the clearest and calmest of days. She didn't mind walking, and it wasn't like she could fly much faster than that anyways.

She looked around. She knew that a rather prickly soquili lived not too far away, by the name of Dumah. He had frightened her the first time they had met and she had gone out of her way to avoid him ever since. Something about those glowing red eyes and too-many wings scared her. She wanted to find shelter from the storm, but knew she couldn't go too far, or risk running into that stallion. Searching about, she found something that looked hopeful. It was a holly tree, with boughs far enough off the ground for her to huddle under, and with enough thick and waxy leaves above to shield her. Relieved, she moved underneath it, watching the rain and hail fall beyond. It grew windier, but she felt safe.

It was then that she heard it, a clatter of hooves coming her way, and coming fast. Had Dumah come to chase her from his territory?

Something very close to panic gripped Emiko. She ran faster than she had since she washed up on these foreign shores, and Fuuka's discomfort had been raised to yowling levels. The hail was growing larger, the winds louder, and Emiko grew more convinced by the moment that a tornado grew behind her. She ran, but suddenly she noticed something, a mare beneath a tree in front of her. The mare looked like she was sheltering from the storm, but Emiko immediately knew that it wasn't enough.

"Tornado coming!" she shouted, forcing herself to slow to warn the stranger. "You need to run! Find stone walls! Trees won't protect you!"

"Tornado?" The word came out half as a whimper and half as a wail. Desperately, Bernadette looked to the other mare. "Where can we go? Where will be safe?" Her instincts told her to cower, to hide underneath the shelter of her tree. Her legs shook as she forced herself to abandon it, rushing to the side of the mare that she hoped would be able to help her.

Desperately, Akkhana tried to stop her fall. One of her wings obeyed her, but the other did not. Each attempt to control it brought a new wave of pain, and a hoarse cry tore from her throat as her wing was jerked backwards. Everything was rushing towards her fast, too fast. She could make out the ground below her, enough trees to batter her broken if she couldn't control her descent. A large holly tree was approaching the fastest, and nearby it she thought she could see two mares...

She was falling and about to crash. She was so desperate to save herself that she forgot to even feel fear. The tree, the ground, and the mares grew closer and closer... and then suddenly there was something else between her and the ground, a green wind stallion.

Hermes didn't think he could reach her, and then he did. With no time to spare, he threw his whole body beneath hers, wings spread to their maximum to slow their fall. He could hear the mare bellowing with pain as she braced against him, and he thought he might be yelling too. He didn't have enough time to think. All he could do was fight against the air, and try to avoid hitting the two mares already on the ground as he prepared for a harsh landing....

Diantha felt entranced as she never had before. As she watched, the tornado seemed to grow in girth before her eyes. Before it had seemed translucent, an ephemeral thing. Now as it gathered up the earth, it was taking on a new strength and life. Still, she was hypnotized, unable to move or act aside from watching. Then, it began to move towards her.

Diantha whirled around. In an instant, she had taken back to the sky. With her eight wings, she was more than able to keep her balance even in the whirling storm. The tornado was still a ways off anyways, and she knew that before it struck, she had to reach her brother. She had to warn him, and protect him if she could.

Dumah stood with six wings outspread. Beneath them sheltered all sorts of creatures, rabbits, mice, birds, even a lone fox that had been stranded away from its den. None of these animals were spirit-touched, but he had lived among them and protected them for so long that they knew to come to him for help. Though the hail pelted him with ever increasing frequency, he stood as a solid and silent sentinel of protection.

Though this storm was fierce, so was he. He had stood before storms before and would do so again now.

Where should they go? It was a good question. "I don't know," replied Emiko, though the wind almost stole away her words. She was about to say more when a particularly hailstone cracked against one of her horns. As it shattered it sprayed her with icy shards. Emiko let out of a whinney of fear. "Just run!" she told the green mare, before taking her own advice.

Emiko could barely hold back from an all out sprint away from the tornado. Her baser instincts were taking control, destroying all her years of training and poise. She forced herself not to run wildly, remembering Fuuka clinging to her back. She couldn't dislodge her precious companion. Also, she didn't want to leave the other mare behind. After an initial dash, she made herself slow enough to let the other mare keep pace with her. Her long tail was better suited for swimming than for sprinting. She wasn't used to being faster than another soquili, but the green mare's intricate wings seemed to be slowing her down...

Lightning arced overhead, releasing a thunderous boom that seemed to split the heavens. Bernadette let out a shriek of fear at the sound, and another as the hail pelted her. She folded her wings, but they were still bulky and unwieldy. They were not nearly as flexible as feather wings might be. They were rigid and strongly reminiscent of glass. They were beautiful, but she could not fold them as neatly as most winged soquili, and she feared that the falling ice might damage them.

She ran as quickly as she could after the dragon-like mare. She was pathetically grateful to not be alone. Even someone she didn't know at all was better than no one. But, stone walls? Where were they going to find stone walls in the middle of nowhere like this?

His muscles were crying out in pain, but Hermes continued to brace himself against the air as much as he could. The mare he was supporting joined him in flapping, but she clearly was already almost spent. The ground rushed towards them dizzyingly fast. Hermes didn't have time to engineer a proper landing, so made due with what he could.

One moment they were crashing through branches, the next they were reaching the ground. Hermes landed on his back legs first, then slamming forward on his front hooves. He staggered forward several paces, stumbled, but kept upright. His heart was beating so forcefully that he could hear it pounding in his ears. In his haze and shock, he knew that they had managed to avoid the two mares running past, and that the mare he had helped had collapsed in a heap on the forest floor. He craned his head to look at her. Was she all right?
