Gretchen hadn't been wrong about the influx in paperwork. She stared at the inboxes that sat on the desks occupying the little office she'd been assigned to, a forlorn expression decorating soft features before she remembered she'd at least have good company for the day. So maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Taking a seat at one of the desks Gretchen pulled the first report off the file and began reading. Head in her hand, elbow on the table, and artificial foot bobbing to the bet of one of Journey's greatest hits as she hummed along.

Chel swung around the corner only when she'd noticed Gretchen had arrived. The pink haired hunter had been sorely tempted to skip the duty altogether, but now that Gretchen was here it wasn't something she could ditch. Chel had no loyalty to her job or the greater good, but she did have a responsibility to friends.
"Hey," she said, leaning against the table to announce herself. "You better not be listenin' to shitty music in front of me like that." A cocky, playful grin with eyes that glinted with seriousness. Chel had always been a mess of contradicting concepts. "S'just plain cold for a welcome back."

The humming ceased at the sound of Chel's voice, Gretchen looking up to flash the other girl a bright grin before lips pressed together at the criticism of her music choice. "I only listen to the all time best," she countered smoothly, spreading fingertips across the desk top as she leaned back on her chair. "They're called the classics for a reason, hot stuff." She did turn though, facing the now Death hunter, elbow on the desk, cheek propped against her knuckles. "So how's it feel bein on the winging team?" She drawled, grinning up at the other girl.

She made no comment on the music, seeing as Chel had nothing left to argue. She knew it was s**t music, but there was no need to kick up a real fuss about it. Chel was too lazy and relaxed about everything to bother.
"S'only winnin' 'cause I'm on it now," she drawled, "Sun was winnin', now it ain't." There was a cocksure grin on her face as she slid some of the files over, looking at them for a moment like she could read it and then put it back down. "How was yer lil vacation?"

Gretch would take the lack of a counter argument as a win, and there was the brief flicker of smugness in her smile before it faded out into her usual good natured sweetness again. "S'cause you're a bad a**." Especially now that the bracelet was gone and she had her bow back. Chel had been impressive enough with just the daggers. Or at least Gretchen thought so. The care free expression slipped away at the mention of the mission, and suddenly the file on the desk was very interesting. For a moment she returned to it, papers rustling in her hands, then she was looking up. "You know, it didn't start out so bad. Wasn't til the end, when the big guys came out to play, that s**t went south."

Chel watched Gretchen with a tilted expression, the very reason she was now placed in death. She was good at watching people, good at telling what made them uncomfortable (bringing up the mission had certainly done that), and noting that Gretchen did feel comfortable enough to talk about it. So she could be pushed, but not tipped.
"What was good?" she asked. "Heard from Jack you was savin' people and s**t. 'As a good thing, right?" She left the questions vague enough for Gretchen to fill in what she wanted.

Gretch's lips tugged to one side as she thought about it. Really, it was a little surprising that someone she didn't even know had paid enough attention to what was going on to know what role she'd played in the whole debacle. "I guess. I mean we did save this girl, so that's somethin'." It hadn't exactly slipped her mind, but it'd been pushed back a bit.
Setting the papers down again, the trainee smoothed them out neatly, squaring their corners along the side of the file. "S'not all bad though, I guess." She was looking at the desk again, but the troubled expression had faded. Now there was a little smile in it's place. "I was pretty freaked out when we got back. Went star gazin' with a friend. Ended up fallen asleep with him on the roof."

"Yeah man. F'there's one thing I learned here s'that you can't take everythin' as one big loss. Gotta look on the bright side and s**t. That girl's gonna live 'cause of you." Advice that, while easy to parrot, was still difficult for Chel to follow some days. Smiling had always been Chel's thing though, and she had one to offer for Gretchen if she needed it.
Chel watched the hands and moved to help organize the pile. She figured Gretchen could sort and Chel could offer conversation and neatness.
Her expression turned lecherous at the mention of star gazing. "Uh. Yeah." Chel made a face that said, I know what you mean. "Star gazin'. S'at what the kids are callin' it these days?"

Gretchen shot Chel a look across the desk. "If it'd been more then that, I'd tell ya." It hadn't, which was fine. At the time Gretchen had been exhausted and stressed, and getting to fall asleep curled up against someone warm and comforting had done wonders for her nerves. She'd woken up stiff, but considerably less tense.
Which wasn't to say she'd have said no if things had headed in that direction.
She propped her elbow on the desk top again, cheek dropping to her knuckles as she reached for another file and scanned it's contents. "It's gettin' less lonely around here." Her first month had been a quiet, lonesome thing since she just hadn't known anyone yet. The longer she was there, the more connections she seemed to make. It was helping, made her feel less homesick.

Chel snorted a small pitying noise. "Ouch. Sounds like you struck out. That sucks d**k." Then rather thoughtfully she added, "Or I guess it don't." She laughed at her own joke because if she didn't, no one else would.
Files moved between the two girls fluidly. "Less lonely how?" she asked. "Like you makin' friends or somethin' else?"

The trainee snorted, flashing Chel a grin. "Woulda had to have tried somethin' to strike out." Since she hadn't, she wasn't going to let the lack of action bruise her pride.
"I've never been much of a loner, so comin' here, where I didn't know anyone,," she made a slight face and handed over another file. "Little too quiet for my tastes. Made me home sick. S'not so bad now. I've got you, and I'm meetin' more people all the time."

"What?" Chel exclaimed, feigning shock. "You with someone under some pretty a** stars and y'didn't even cop a feel?" She shook her head as though it was some great offense. "Shame on you."
Missed opportunities aside, Chel jokingly said, "Who said you got me?"

"Other things on my mind," she admitted, looking amused.
Amusement that grew as Chel joked. "Excuse you? I believe I'm owed some puppy eyes and winky faces for this." Brows arched expectantly. "I've upheld my end the bargain." The hand not currently supporting her cheek gestured lazily at the desk and the files spread out between them.
"You asked me for help. I'd say that means I've got you." The smile she flashed the other Death was down right cheeky.

"You made a deal, but nothin' says I gotta uphold it." Chel returned the cheeky smile with one of her own. Truly Chel did belong in death.
"Lucky for you I got a weak spot for hot chicks." Chel switched between businesswoman and flirtatious whore in a matter of moments. "So I'll forgive it this once."
There were a few moments of silence as Chel took the files from Gretchen and stacked them. Then she said, "So start at the beginning. What 'bout the mission's got ya shook up?"

Chel very nearly received a kick beneath the table from an artificial foot, but was saved by the flirty compliment. "Wait, why am I the one that needs forgiving here? Aren't you the one trying to renege on an offer?" It didn't sound like Gretchen was all that serious though.
And joking ceased as the mission came up once again.
Devika gave a very exasperated sigh in the trainee's mind, and she got the sense of tightening coils. "Uh." A small shake of her head, the fingers beneath her cheek unfolding so she could tuck a bit of hair behind her ear. "Hunters turnin' on each other, zombie hodgepodge nightmare fuel, giant kaiju lookin' thing with the voice of hundreds of screamin' people. I dunno, you pick."
