IC

It was like any other day, after stealing a few things out of bordom the previous day, Werymn had woken up and decided it was about time he open the letter that was from his boyfriend. The only problem was... it was gone. After moments of frantic searching a note had been found.

In simple large scrawl the note read 'an eye for an eye'. It seemed whomever wrote it had stolen the letter that belonged to Werymn and was exacting 'revenge' in a rather bizzarre way. He had to get the letter back... but the first problem would be finding out who took it in the first place.

Quest Tasks
||. Werymn should discover his letter is missing
||. A note was left behind and it seemed it had been taken by someone. Werymn should figure out that the culprit was someone he had stolen from the day before. (Perhaps they leave more evidence of their theft or could have been speaking rather openly about stealing it)
||. Werymn should find this person and confront them, to which the theif will point out how something of value of their own was stolen first and this was just pay back.
||. Werymn will need to convince the theif to give his letter back, and simply returning the item he had stolen from him will not be enough.
||. The quest should end with Werymn opening and reading the letter.

Awakening

Werymn heaved out a sigh as he splayed out across the bedroll in his tent. The Sauti air was quiet, still, a little nippy. Dovev had retreated from their encampment some hours ago, likely off to patrol the nearby areas for sources of food and clean water. But that left Wer alone. That left Wer's thoughts forced to occupy themselves thinking of ways to pass the time. That left Wer more than likely to get into trouble, as had been his proceedings over the last several days.

Sauti was not the most hospitable of places. The people were not the gentlest or the kindest, and a steady stream of provisions was hard to come by, even with Dovev's hunting skill and Werymn's... mostly failed attempts to learn such things. Instead, the Water lad took to scrounging what he could from whatever other travelers they passed. Survival of the fittest, and all. He was small, lanky, relatively quick on his feet and easy enough to miss if no one was looking. Besides, there was a certain thrill to stealing that kept his spirits high on his travels, so long as he wasn't caught and injured, anyway.

It was how he came across a few interesting trinkets. Later he'd learn that much of what he'd taken was useless to anyone but the original owner, and Dovev didn't fancy carting around superfluous items, so a great majority of it was tossed away. It seemed like the ring he'd taken was something of the sort; wooden, lacquered to make it shine, etched with carvings, no jewels or gems. At the time, Wer fancied that it had been magicked, and held some sort of amazing properties. But no. It was extremely ordinary. But whether it was or not, his spirits were still high. The road ahead was getting shorter. The 'travel' portion of his journey would draw to a close, only to make way for the 'hunt' portion; scouring Zenan mountains for alleged treasure 'better than silver and gold.'

And then he'd be home.

He'd be with Laric.

Golden orbs flickered to the bag that now held his scroll case, and concealed within that; the letter Laric had sent with him along with Xeeta, the family’s xaraan. He felt good. The trials had been few so far and everything was going smoothly enough. If he were to open that letter now and find pleas to return scrawled in Laric’s hand, he’d be able to refuse them with certainty. Not until he had what he came for.

The thought drove Werymn to his hands and knees. He crawled toward his bag, rifled through it, and found… nothing. His brow furrowed. Rational or not, the contents of his bag soon found their way to the floor, quickly followed by the contents of Dovev’s bag and the immediate scattering of every other article throughout the tent. Still, there was only nothing.

It could’ve been left behind at an inn. Dropped on the road, lost to bandits. Werymn’s chest tightened. He scrambled outside, knowing that while it wouldn’t do him any good, he at least had to move. Anything that may help him understand or know-

Xeeta chirped from his place tied to a tree and adamantly pawed at the dirt.

Wer glanced down. There, scratched into the earth, was a message. Wind had blown much of it awry, leaving the Water lad to squint speculatively and uncertainly at it. From Dovev, maybe? Telling him to attend chores when he rose? Likely not. Dovev had easier means of communicating with him, and to be fair, Wer had no idea if the man could even write. Werymn crouched, tracing over the gouges in the earth with his finger.

‘An eye for an eye.’

Beneath it, a big circle wrapped around a smaller circle, what might have been an arrow, and then connected squiggly lines that could be a disillusioned square. Werymn was not an idiot. The household he’d grown up in had four children, not including himself. Four Oban children, who were accustomed to getting what they wanted and threw tantrums and fought when they didn’t. They blamed him, harped him, made him work for anything he wanted or needed. Retribution was common place. This, Wer decided with a scowl, was clearly a tantrum from one of the Tendajians and a plea for things to be righted.

The Water male sneered, swiping his hand violently across the message before rising to his feet. He’d find the perpetrator, get his stuff back, and carry on. He strode purposefully toward his xaraan, and mounted up. “Xeeta, baby, we have things to do today.”

At least he wouldn’t be bored.

Caravan

Werymn could say with almost absolute certainty that the culprit was still nearby. And if he (or she) was close enough to take from him, then they’d likely been close enough to be taken from the day before. That, at least, seemed to be standard knowledge. It was why Wer guided his xaraan back toward the caravan they’d passed the day before. The group had consisted of all sorts; Leaf, Wind, Shifter, with a smaller smattering of Water and Ice earthlings as well. He expected they were travelling traders, off to peddle their wares in whatever region they could get buyers in.

Needless to say, Werymn had spent a substantial amount of time here the day previous. As Xeeta carried him in, Wer glanced around. He couldn’t possibly have offended more than one or two of these people. Three tops. His initial inspection yielded nothing. He wasn’t so much looking for people he recognized, so much as he was scouring every face for some sign that someone recognized him. That would be the best indicator. Probably the only one he got.

The only problem was that they day was still young. It would be a while yet before the great brunt of the traders rose and began milling about. He didn’t have much choice with that. Heaving an annoyed sigh, Wer dismounted and settled in to wait. Things were mostly quiet. He perched near one of the carts along the outer edge of the perimeter, settling his back against it and plucking up a stick to throw for Xeeta to chase.

It was a slow passing of time, but it went nonetheless.

By the time more noise echoed from behind him, Werymn’s arm hurt from throwing the stick so many times.

“Eirid.” The voice started him, and Wer jumped with a short gasp. “Someone said they saw you sitting out here with a wild animal. Are you alright? Sick? Hungry? I brought you some bread, so-”

It was then that Wer pushed away from the cart and turned to face the voice approaching from the other side. It was decidedly female, and if the sound of her footsteps was any indication, a light one, at that. As he rose, she reeled backward, and he blinked in confusion. Their eyes met. She was shorter than him, with a mop of tight cream curls and sky-blue irises. As soon as he was straightened, her eyes narrowed. They traveled up his lanky frame and settled on his face, before her lips pursed in a tight declaration of, “You.”

Werymn’s head cocked ever-so-slightly to the side as he pinned her with his gaze. She’d called him ‘Eirid,’ which he assumed was a name, so nevermind that she had mistaken him for someone she knew (which led Wer to believe that anyone with fins must look the same to her - racist woman), but then she had the gall to actually look him in the face and know that he was someone else she didn’t like. His thoughts raced through this in a matter of moments, and so while the air hung empty between them for several instances, finally, Wer summoned the ability to speak. And when he did, it came out a demand, cut and short and crisp. ”You know me?”

“Ya. Saw you runnin’ around yesterday evenin’, sticking yer nose into oth’r peoples’ business. Came up things started missin’. Scrawny little no-good brat like you. Course it was yer fault, hn?”

”Oh, please,” he scoffed with a flick of his wrist. ”Hardly anything I took was of actual value. I’m sure no one noticed-”

You ain’t of a mind to be judging value to anyone else.” Her fingers stabbed at his chest, and Werymn was immediately taken aback by the fierce tone of her voice. “It ain’t no good to ya, and ye dun want it, so give it back!”

”Perhaps when my things are returned to me, I could-”

She folded her arms, gave a twitch of a curl over her shoulder, and huffed. “No. I’ll be keeping yers to compensate for the undue hardship ye’ve imposed on me. Get one good fire-starter out of it.”

Wer’s heart lodged itself instantaneously in his throat, cutting off coherent speech for several moments. ”N-no. Don’t… don’t do that.” Fire, she’d said. It’d ruin everything. He’d never- Werymn swallowed. ”Missing it is causing me undue hardship, so-”

“Yers is due. Due hardship. Yah deserve it.”

He snapped then, lurching forward in a fit, ”I don’t care if it is or not! I will hunt you- Wreck everything- Ruin anything you and your comrades work toward, and I swear- by all the gods- if you set fire to my things, nothing you hold sacred is safe- Nothing for the rest of your life, and I will-”

“Quiet, lad,” she barked, waving his threats away with a flap of her arms. “You get me my ring. We’ll work something out.”

Aloud

He had to return to his own encampment to retrieve her ring. All the while he thought of what a horrid exercise this was. She could’ve already burned or otherwise ruined his letter and this could all be for nothing. If she had, he would raise all kinds of trouble, though. So at least he could take solace in that.

Werymn returned to her with all due haste. She waited for him outside of her cart, scroll case in hand. When his eyes landed on it, she immediately said, “Yeh kin have this back when ye earn it.” And her voice was too firm for arguments. “But I’ll be havin’ my ring now.” She held out her hand. Wer hesitated. This was the only leverage he had. Yielding it now was akin to suicide. Mission failure. What if-

No, no what if’s. The Wind woman was not a fan of him, but the treasure she currently held was not to be gambled with. Swallowing his fears, he plopped the wooden ring into her open palm. She inspected it, nodded, pocketed it, and moved away. “Now, then. We’ve come across our fair share of beasts in our travels. Sometimes like to keep ‘em. Might be good to have someone around to scrape away manure and brush dirty coats. Someone like you should be accustomed-”

”Why?”

She cast him a quizzical look. “I’m not rightly fond of the smell, and-”

He shook his head stiffly. He had a xaraan of his own, and had always cared for its upkeep himself. He wasn’t concerned about the chores. ”Not that. The ring. Why is it important to you?”

She stalled. Looked him over. Sighed. “It is the band from my ceremony.”

”Your...?”

“I was married before th’ war,” she admitted gruffly with a shrug. “But my husband died tryin’a free yer people. Kinda insulting that you would honor that by stealin’ from his widow.”

So no, she wasn’t fond of Water Earthlings. ”I… didn’t know. I’m sorry.”

“Ya. Bet yer real sorry now, hm.”

”No, I mean it, I- That letter. It’s all I have from my lover too.” Her brow quirked, and Wer added hastily, ”He’s not dead, or anything, but I left home… to seek something out worth giving to him, so that he would… I don’t really know. Find me acceptable, perhaps? I’ve been his slave my entire life, so it seems… It’s hard to explain it, actually.”

She clucked her tongue, settled her hands on her hips, and rocked to the side. “You sent him any letters.”

”N-no...” Wer admitted, suddenly abashed that he hadn’t.

“But he sent you this?” She held up the paper, and Wer nodded. “Say anything good in here?”

”I...haven’t read it. I was saving it for-”

“You haven’t read it?” He shook his head. “Boy I think yer a little stupider every time ya open yer mouth.” Werymn tried not to bristle and snap at her words, but she was speaking again. “Ye feel like ye gotta give him something to be accepted. That ain’t what love is. I can only hope yer lad has more sense than you. ‘Ere.” She stuffed the scroll case at him, and Wer fumbled to hold it. “Ye can have it back if you read it now. Out loud.”

The dark purple blush that streaked across Wer’s face came immediately. ”Have you…?”

“Can’t read. And I mind my own,” she cut him off. “Usually. Now go on.”

It seemed like a better deal than picking mud and s**t from animals’ pelts, so with hasty fingers, Wer unclasped the bindings on the casing. He shouldered the straps, then unrolled the parchment, leaving it bare and open before his face. ”Aloud?” He repeated.

“Ain’t that clear enough for you?”

He swallowed, dislodging the anxiety in his throat and started.

Discovery

’My beautiful… river fairy,’ Werymn had never been so ashamed of anything Laric had written in his entire life. Heat swam up to his cheeks like the washing tide, and the Water man grit his teeth before continuing. ’Every day I wonder how far you’ve gone and how much farther you’ve still to go. Mother tells me you’d originally planned to return, but that doesn’t ease my fears that you’ve changed your mind along the way. I don’t see why you’d even risk leaving alone. I would’ve gone with you. Whatever necessary thing you feel you must do, I would’ve been there.”

“You’re such a child sometimes, Tes.’
The entirety of Wer’s body stiffened, fingers bunching in the paper as his eyes narrowed. He stilled, quieted, eyes roaming over the parchment. Not his name. Not a word he’d ever heard. A mistake? Maybe innocent or maybe there was someone with that name in Laric’s life now. The Wind woman gave an impatient grunt for him to continue, and Werymn did on an unsteady breath.

’I wonder if you think at all before you act or even moderately care how I’d feel about this whole thing. If you’ve something to prove, prove it to me and not my father. Not my race. This proves nothing to me, and Tes’-” Again. He’d done it again.

When he stalled this time, he whispered to no one in particular, ”That’s not my name. I- Don’t know anyone of that name...”

“Oh, the plot thickens.”

’I miss you, y’know. I miss you laughing at me and scolding me. I miss your cooking and your wit. I miss the way you feel warming my bed, against’-” Another stutter on Wer’s part, and his gaze traveling fleetingly down, skipping the better half of two paragraphs and settling on-

’Mother is not as good a cook as you are, by the way. She tries, and I think you should like to see it, but what she really needs is help. We’ve spoken quite a lot about you since you’ve left. She’s told me things I don’t even remember… Do you recall when I was sick? It’s mostly fuzzy to me, but she assures me you were sweetest to me then. She told me the name you had when father bought you. She wouldn’t tell me how she knew it, since she wasn’t there herself, but it’s Teslaron. It’s kind of a mouthful out loud. Even so, it still suits you better than some grub, and I’ve taken to using it rather nicely during the nights I spend’-”

Werymn choked off again, folding the paper down and creasing it between his fingers. Teslaron. That had never been him. Or at least, not for as long as he could remember.

’You aren’t my slave. You’re my lover, and you deserve something befitting that.’

”That’s… all it says.”

“Feel a bit like you skipped out on some important parts, but… Still seems like he has a better grasp on ‘lover’ than you do.”

The Water male glanced it over again, flicking through some parts more than others and murmuring. ”Perhaps.” He thumbed over the lettering. ”His lover’s name is ‘Teslaron,’ and he knew that before I did, so… even if it seems a little wrong to me, I’ve no choice but to accept. As he said, I’m… not his slave, anymore.”
