Having the phones helped. They helped a hell of a lot, but that didn't mean Navi wasn't eager to be home again. She had lingered in her apartment for all of fifteen minutes when she'd walked through the mirror and back into the city. Long enough to deposit her suitcase, to pull the phone from her pocket to send a rushed text to her prince to meet her. Then she was powering up again and heading right back through the mirror, stepping out in the basement of the rec center.

She didn't feel him immediately, but then she wasn't surprised. She had just sent the message, and he could mirrorwalk or teleport. Unless he had already been there when the text had arrived she'd have beat him.

It was alright though, Navi knew he would be there. As soon as he was able he would be there.

Instead of heading to the roof, the DMC detoured to the music room they had first met in. It had been a while since they'd been there, preferring the little hidey-hole they had ferreted out a few floors down, or the roof, the music room didn't see as much action these days.

Humming lightly to herself, Navi ran her fingers over the keys on the piano, the tips of her fingers pressing down on a few to play a simplistic, upbeat little melody. It was good to be home.

Chaonis' path to the rec center was a little more difficult, but definitely worth it. As soon as he got her text he was out the door, leaving his dad calling after him, but Tony knew better than to ask too much about what Chaonis was up to.

He powered up on the way, taking a familiar route that he had perfected over their long acquaintance, figuring out the easiest, quickest way there without being too obvious about it. He did not want anyone unwelcomed following him, though he did not feel any auras about.

After what happened with Painite last time, he was not going to take any chances. He had a job to do, and that was to protect Navi at all costs. He was not going to fail in that again, he had already vowed to himself.

Once he got close to the familiar grounds of the center, he felt her aura and immediately went toward it. It did not take him long to figure out where in the building she was. He followed the music once he heard it, poking his head into the room and smiling.

"You're a little slow on the tempo, there," he said, walking in to the room casually, though every nerve ending was on fire and his brain was screaming at him to run to her and hug her as tightly as he could. He had to play it cool, since that was who he was, right?

She felt him approaching and just the brush of his aura was enough to speed her pulse. A half giddy little smile tugged at her lips, and she didn't even try to fight it as the sound of boots on the tile in the hall announced him before his voice filled the room, light and teasing. She didn't look up, but he'd see the grin from across the room, the flush of color across freckle kissed cheeks. "Am I? I wouldn't know. The piano's not really my scene." A few more notes, and now hazel eyes flicked up to him. "I'm more a strings girl."

It wasn't just Chaonis fighting the urge to race across the room. The need to throw herself into his arms was a heavy thing, but she resisted, for now. Playing along, teasing in turn.

It could be a battle of wills. To see who cracked first, gave into that needy urge and made the first move.

"Did you miss me?" She missed him. The phone helped, they talked constantly, but how many nights had she fallen asleep with tears drying on her cheeks from the ache of leaving him so soon after the ordeal she'd been through.

The vacation was a needed one, she appreciated Raven taking her away from the threat of Painite, if only for a little while. She neede dto heal, and she needed to do it somewhere safe, but it hadn't been easy.

"Of course not."

He could not help but try to keep the game up, but it seemed his once strong will crumbled immediately. He moved toward her and caught her in his arms, tugging her away from the musical instruments and spinning her around as he kissed her deeply.

"Well," he said, after a long moment of just holding her to him, and delighting in the feel of having her back. He might have hugged her a bit too tight, but he could not help himself. "Maybe I missed you a little."

Just a little.

She only occupied his thoughts almost entirely for every single moment she was gone, and he wanted to text her his every stupid thought just for the sake of being in constant contact with her.

He only barely managed to not do that. But just barely.

"I am very glad you're back, either way."

"Well, if that's the case. Maybe I sho-"

That was as far as she got before strong hands were drawing her back from the piano and turning her. A second, to blink up into that handsome face, for the thought of a victory to flitter briefly through her mind, then there was nothing but the kiss and the desperate strength in the hands that held her. She was helpless, gone, would have melted to the ground if he hadn't been holding her up. It pulled a delicate whimper from the DMC, had her raising arms to loop around his shoulders as she rise up on her toes to meet him.

Perfect.

When they parted she was dazed, swaying on the spot as his voice floated around her. Her's was breathy when she answered. "I'm glad to be back."

Glad enough she had to fight back tears. Small hands slid down from his neck, fingers curling around his armor as she leaned into him, pressing her face against his chest. She was just so happy to see him again. Every lonely night, every ounce of worry she'd had to shoulder. It all fell away now, in his arms.

Chaonis smiled and caressed her cheek affectionately. Texting was fine, and had been a good enough substitute while she was so far away, but there was nothing like having her back in his arms, and being able to hold on to her.

He was happiest when he was with her. Basically, when she was away, he was even more miserable then when he was a kid.

And that was something.

As he cuddled against him, he kept his arms around her, kissing the top of her head and letting her lean on him. It was a little overwhelming, even for him, and he always did what he could to be the master of his emotions. She always got to see the real him, though.

"So what did you get up to over there? Didn't have too much fun while you were away, right?" Not that he would be jealous or anything. If she mentioned boys. Or something.

Threatening tears were brushed from her eyes, and she smiled up at him, chin resting on the hard plastic of his fuku. "A lot of sun bathing," she answered honestly. "For the first week that was pretty much all I was up for, since I was still recovering." Days to ween herself off the pain killers, days to get her energy back.

Days of lingering fear, and the pain of leaving Chaonis.

"The beaches are beautiful." Long stretches of white sand and crystal blue. She did miss that. "Lesath took me out dancing a few times though."

It had been a very relaxing trip, which was what Navi had needed after the ordeal shed been through.

Smile slipping a little, one small hand came up to brush fingers over the scar that now etched along left side of her face. Out in California it hadn't mattered, not really. But here.. Surely Chaonis wouldn't think any less of her, but she couldn't help the irrational worry. She had been picking up scars at a worrying rate lately.

Chaonis nodded his head, thinking about how bad she was hurt at that time. The whole thing with Painite had nearly cost her her life, and that was something Chaonis could never forgive. Just thinking about it now, even with Navi tightly wrapped in his arms, made his heart tight with anxiety as anger boiled in his throat.

One day, they would be able to pay Painite back for everything.

But he had to focus on the fact that he had her with him now, and she was safe. He loved her, and she had come back to him, so they could delight in that for a little while, at the very least. If he had his way, it would be the only thing they had to focus on, but unfortunately there was still a war. And they were still on different teams.

"Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it out there, but not so much that you wanted to stay. I don't think I would have liked that very much. Might have had to go out there myself and collect you." Or just move out there to be with her. When push came to shove, how strong was his will to remain in this fight, if he really had to chose between duty and being with her?

Navi was already trying to chose between duty and love.

She'd made up her mind, hadn't she? All she had to do now was figure out how. An arduous, impossible seeming task, to be sure. Navi didn't even know where to start other than simply asking around and trying to talk to the royalty of the White Moon.

"I can't leave you," she assured him, fingers curling against the plastic of his armor. "I love you." California was fun, but she was happy, relieved even, to be home. Even with the danger of Painite looming over her, over Chaonis and his entire family. Even with the war still going on, she'd had to come home.

Soft lips curled up impishly after a moment, and she rose up on her tiptoes to lay a kiss on his chin. "You'd have come all the way out to Cali to bring me home?" The sweet smile grew until she was grinning up at him.

"I'd've walked there if I had to. I'll come for you anywhere, you know that. It might take me a stupid amount of time to figure things out sometimes, but when it comes to you, I know what I want and what I'm supposed to do."

Whatever happened, she was the most important thing in his life now. He was fashioning himself, his duties and his time, around her life, and including her in every decision he made, whether she knew it or not. She was always on his mind, whether it was a mundane thought or something more serious.

He would not be able to be the happier, more responsible, more grown up man he had become without her. If she was taken from him, by any means or in any definition of the term, he would stop knowing how to function.

There was no doubt in his mind that he was a better, more whole person because he not only knew her, but loved her. She was the better part of his heart, and the only part of him that seemed worthwhile or valuable.

"And I mean that. I feel like I let you down, with Painite taking you, but I'm never going to let that happen again. I'm never going to let anything bad happen to you. I'd die first."

The grin melted into a look of utter adoration as he spoke, and it made her wonder. If she asked him now, would he join her court? The girl had no intention of doing that, as much as she would miss Raven, as much as she loved the Dark Mirror, but if it proved impossible for her to go to him, would he come to her?

it wasn't a question she had ever asked him, nothing she'd ever seriously considered, but they were closer than ever. So wrapped up in each other, in love, that to face life alone anymore seemed like agony.

The curious thoughts where pushed aside, and she reached up to cup his cheeks, drawing him down so she could catch his lips in a soft kiss, touching forehead to forehead. "I know you won't." She never doubted him. He would do everything in his power to keep her safe and whole, and she would do the same for him.

Even his family played a part in keeping her safe.

She really did feel loved.

Chaonis smiled at her warmly, feeling a strong wealth of love burning in his gut, spreading warmth through his veins and making his heart beat a bit faster. She was the only person who had ever managed to connect with him in such a powerful way, and he owed a lot of who he was now to her.

She gave him a reason to be good, oddly enough, and made him see how important his role as a protector really was. Even if she was not on the White Moon side, technically, she still showed him what it really meant to protect someone, and how much loyalty and dedication it took.

It was scary, knowing he was responsible for something now, but in a way, he was not sure he ever wanted to go back to how it was before. Who he was before.

"So. Any plans for the rest of the night?" He smiled at her, caressing her cheek gently with his thumb, cradling the curve of her jaw line with his hand. "No hot dates, right?"

Hazel eyes stayed lost behind dipped lashes as he touched her cheek, large fingers sliding over soft skin to cup the curve of her jaw. It brought a content sigh to her lips, and she shifted a hand to cup his against the side of her face, pressing into his palm. "Only with you."

There had been no plan beyond the simple and all consuming need to see him. Now she had him before her, his hands and his arms, and his lips. They could have stood there all night, just like this, and Navi would have been content.

There were instruments all around them though, and after a handful of seconds she'd open her eyes to look up at him, smiling. "We could play something." It'd been a while. They hadn't played a duet in ages, their lives had just been too chaotic.

"Play something?" Chaonis nodded his head. They had met through music, basically, and it was a very important part of their existence. She was his Elphaba, from a musical he had never cared about that much until she called him Fiyero.

He grinned.

"I'll have to fake most of it. I can't say I've had a lot of time to practice, recently, but I'm sure it'll come right back, right? Just like riding a bike, and not something that needs constant, relentless practice to perfect."

He cracked his knuckles, though, and looked determined to try. They could spend the night with each other, wrapped in the other's arms, and in music, and it would be perfect. He could not think of anything else he would want to be doing with his time, or anywhere better to be. Because there was nothing else, and nowhere better.

He was messing with her, she knew that but all the same the look she gave him after that comment was not entirely friendly. Chilliness reflected in pale eyes, features set in stern lines, until the shadow of a smile started to tug at the corner of her lips.

Forcing a pout, she slapped uselessly at his plastic armor as she slipped from his arms to take a seat on the piano bench, leaving lots of room for him to settle in beside her.

Laying fingers on the worn keys, she thought for a moment, trying to recall the notes to the song she wanted to play. Piano wasn't her instrument. Chaonis was much better at it than she was, but she knew enough. With a sot 'Ah' and a smile, she started to play. A song he would no doubt find familiar.
