Dragons. Everything was just dragons. The creatures were fascinating but…this wasn’t helping her in the least. Maybe she had to look up some books on monsters? Or maybe…things that changed into monsters? Werewolves perhaps?

She flopped her head down on the arm of the couch in her living room, sighing heavily. Things had been so…difficult lately. It was hard to function with only one working arm…and when your mind was occupied with everything dumb…that just made things even worse.

At least someone was coming over today. That knight…Arias was going to come over…he had texted and she had invited…after all, he was the one who had rescued her and brought her to the hospital…and she did have a pretty sweet cast…the things they could do now…two colors in one cast. Purple and green did look pretty sweet together. Her house was kind of messy right now…but he would have to deal with it. They were going to do more research on dragons so…so maybe they could find a way to help Merlinite.

When the knock on the door came, Cambria stood up, walking to the door and opening it with a tired smile. “Hey there, stranger. Welcome. I’m…still Cambria. Haha…”

Friendships were hard…but…research and planning was worth it.

Arias had been excited when Cambria returned his text—and invited him over. It was more than he had expected; ultimately he had only wanted to hear how she was doing and if there was anything he could do to help, but being invited over was a pleasant surprise to his generallly mundane schedule, and it was an opportunity he didn't intend to pass up.

He moved his schedule around to ensure he could arrive, and took a little extra time at the bakery to prepare a batch of very fresh, very delicious cookies.

He missed the chill of winter already; he might as well have taken the cookies out a few minutes early so they could finish baking while he walked over. (Or not, they were perfect—or, at least, he thought so.)

He found Cambria's place with little difficult, knocked—had long enough to get worried—and then relaxed when it was her opening the door. "Hey," he greeted. "I'm still Arias. Your arm doing all right? —I brought cookies. Well. Not that they'll help your arm, but." He cleared his throat and flashed a smile to try and cover up the fact that he was blundering over his own words. "But they're cookies, just in case you were in the mood."

Cambria shook her head and gave a little laugh. Now this…this was really just a genuine…nice guy. That was all. He baked her cookies and seemed honestly concerned about her arm. “It’s still there, so I’ve got that going for me, Arias. Um…thanks for coming over, it’ll be nice to not be alone with all of my crazy thoughts and ideas today…because I’m pretty full of them right now.”

She ushered him into the apartment and shut the door, locking it quickly.

“I’ve been doing research on dragons…you know, um. My friend got turned into one by Painite…and I was kind of hoping that we’d be able to do something to help him…Well. He’s not a real dragon…he’s some sort of…dragon…nega hybrid but…but he’s still him. Like, he didn’t attack me when he got turned into it…so I think that has to mean there’s something there that’s still…you know…him…”

The girl sighed. “We have to find a way to save him, we just have to.”

The topic seemed to change rather fluidly; it took a second for him to catch up. He was still worried about her arm and whether or not cookies were going to be to her liking and then she was talking about dragons and…Painite.

A lump had formed in his throat and trying to clear it just made it that much more noticeable. He didn't quite understand what Cambria was talking about, but he nodded. The picture in his head wasn't a pretty one, and Cambria was talking about someone who needed saving…

And he didn't abandon her the other night, and he wasn't about to abandon her now.

"Painite seems the sort to cause all sorts of trouble." He didn't know if he was reassured by the fact that there were others who had issue with her—or if he even had a right to hold anything against her. His grudge stemmed from a battle that hadn't happen from a future he wasn't going to let happen…

His arm tingled, a cold, painful tingle, but he forced himself to clench his hands into fists sand ignore it. It was in his head. Just in his head.

…But this guy Cambria was talking about, he had a real problem.

"I've never heard of anything like that happening," he admitted. "…But I also don't know all that much about the Negaverse beyond I guess the basics. But…I mean, there has to be a way to turn him back, right? Aren't there people trying to find out how to reverse the youma? And how to purify the Negaverse? …You just have to find out who knows anything about them, maybe?"

…It was a long shot, and he knew he wasn't even making much sense. "…Or, I mean. I haven't invested as much time into looking at the Negaverse or what they can do, but if a human was able to do that to someone…then theoretically a human on the other side should be able to fix them somehow, right? …And if there's a piece of him left under all that…dragon…then maybe chasing out the Chaos will bring him back?"

…Maybe?

Cambria looked kind of relieved that he was thinking that way…it made her feel like she wasn’t as crazy as she was beginning to think she was…he seemed to think the same way…that there had to be a way to save him. There just had to be. Someone had to have that ability.

And he even had logic behind it, which was more than she could say…all she had was hope, he was backing it up, saying that since someone made Merlinite into a monster…clearly someone could un-make him back into a person…and even more than that…someone could…when he was fixed of his…monster attributes…someone could help him become…part of their side. It could happen, right? She wasn’t just wishing. She couldn’t be.

“Arias, thank you…if you can find someone…anyone that can help him…that would mean the world to me, it would really mean more than the world to me…he’s such a nice guy…and…”

And she was so totally, stupidly in love with him and. Ugh.

“And he didn’t deserve that to happen to him…it was horrible…”

"I'll look," he promised. He didn’t know if he could find anyone, but it didn't mean he wasn't going to try. He didn't even know where to start, but Arias' self doubt wasn't the issue here—fixing Cambria's friend was going to be the issue. And it was an issue he wanted to help her solve, if he could.

"…Chaos kind of has that effect on people. Where bad things happen to good people. And I get that sometimes people get mixed into the whole thing and it takes time to figure out what they've gotten involved in, but Chaos, I think…just has this way of getting to you, you know? Where you wind up trapped in it. Where you know it's wrong, but you can't leave. Like an addiction…that knows when you're trying to quit it."

He chewed on the inside of his cheek for a second and then shrugged. What did he know? "…But I'm sure there's a way to save him. If he's as nice as you say then he has to have a good heart, right? There's gotta be some part of it we can appeal to, some way to reverse what the Negaverse made him into. I won't let Chaos win, not as long as I can help it."

Even if it meant just trying to save one person at a time.

Cambria gave a small smile and nodded. “Chaos is awful…all of those people…” A thought struck her and it made her terribly sad. “So…so really…all of those people, even Painite are really just…trapped with chaos and it’s horrible…”

The girl sighed, swallowing. She wanted to help them. Painite included. She wanted to find a way to save them all…nobody should have to live with that…nobody should have to be controlled by something so evil…

“I won’t let it win either, Arias. We can save them. We can do our best. If we work together…all of us…I’m sure we can save them…who knows! Maybe even Painite was something nicer…or could be something nicer if we just…find a way to help…maybe it’s not her that’s the bad thing.” Then again…maybe she was just the world’s biggest b***h…

She could see it going either way.

At least…she had someone to talk to about all of this…even if she was pretty sure he was going to think she was nuts for even suggesting that Painite might not be all evil…

Painite, just an innocent trapped with Chaos?

That, Arias wanted to debate.

He reached to rub the back of his neck in a small effort to dispel the uncomfortable tingle that had sprouted with talk of her. "Maybe," he said slowly, but seemed to pick up a bit of confidence in himself when he continued, "I think Chaos just has the upper hand right now because it's been around for so long. Chaos…knows what's going and knows how to run the show, and the rest of us are just trying to keep up. Hard to stop someone who has been around for as long as they—it?—has. I feel like I'm still playing catch up. Doesn't give us much of an opportunity to get ahead of Chaos, but I know that if we just keep trying, we'll be able to get the upper hand."

Hard work and dedication—it was something they could all stand to do a little more of. Unlike Chaos, they had a good cause. It wasn’t about destroying anyone, it was about saving them.

Even if it meant they just had to save them from themselves.

Cambria nodded. “So we just have to keep facing forward and…and working to beat it…I think it might be able to be done…I met a cat…and she was obsessed with getting me to start working with others so…maybe that really is the key. Teamwork…”

She had been going it alone for so long…maybe she really had to get together with…someone. Anyone. Together they could be strong. Together…

“I think…inviting you over has been better for me than I can even begin to start admitting, so thank you for coming, Arias. I really mean it.” And she did. Bouncing ideas off of him had eased some of her worries…answered some of her questions…albeit raised some new ones.

“Maybe when my arm heals, you and I can patrol together and try to help people. I’d be down for it if you are.”

Arias' smile looked a little more reassured; he nodded. "I'd like that, a lot. But don't push yourself. Take it easy—take this opportunity to just relax and maybe dig up some research. I don't want you doing any more damage to your arm." He nodded to it and rubbed at his own before shaking his head.

It seemed like he was more crippled by the thought of losing a limb in this lifetime than he was after it had happened.

"And if you need anything, you've got my number. Or you can drop by, I'll make sure you know how to find my Bakery."

…They could focus on the powered things later. She had a lot on her mind, but for now…They could just focus on being them. Because, at the end of the day, beneath all that glamour and fighting, they were still just humans.

Might as well make the best of it.
