It always felt like such a novel experience to go hunting alone with just Samoset - normally, Elsheba accompanied many other sisters in a hunt, normally north to isle Amara trying to take down Nizda or anything else that could be taken home for supplies and food. On trips that headed further away from Chibale, and deeper into Shifter territory, a smaller number was normally better. During wartime, such trips would be exercised in quiet, with hand gestures to communicate intent, but now, as war lifted and the people of Tendaji fell into a comfortable comraderie for the most part, sister felt they could bend the rules without risk.

So as the two headed out towards Ast, Elsheba felt giddy to be going with someone whose presence she thoroughly enjoyed. The war had kept everyone scattered and busy - with Elsheba staying close to home to protect her sisters. She hadn't had much chance to talk to her closest friend - and saw this as an opportunity to catch up for lost time.

They'd been traveling for quite some way before Elly spotted a waterway. "A good place to stop for a while." She decided out loud, grinning at Sam as she slid a pack from her shoulder and tossed it to the ground.

Samoset couldn't believe that he was hunting alone with Elsheba, it was almost surreal. Usually he had to deal with a bunch of other Sisters along with Elsheba, which made getting anywhere close to her difficult. However, now that he had the time, he wasn't finding communicating all that much easier. The way her hair swayed as she walked, the sound of her voice... The curve of body. All of her seemed to do nothing but overwhelm all of his senses. He'd already bumped his head on a branch, slipped on a rock, and dropped his arrows more than once during this hunt, how much more of an idiot could he be before she caught on?

He wiped the sweat from his brow as the waterway came into view and echoed her grin. Yes, finally, a place to soak his feet and rest for a while. Now... If he could just get to the water and not fall in, that would be fantastic.

"Yes, this looks..." He paused, watching as Elsheba tossed her pack aside. "... Beautif-I mean, relaxing. My feet could use a break. How about yours?"

Had Sam always been so clumsy? Doubtful - after all, the bow of a Blade wasn't awarded easily! So, Elsheba concluded, Samoset must simply be hungry, the poor thing. As they continued on, she grew more and more concerned - so once he agreed to stop, Elsheba instantly turned her mind to taking some of the dried meat from their bags to ease her friend's stomach. If needed, they could always fish and bring back the bounty, if no other meat was to be found to replace what supplies were used, right?

Nodding, Elsheba stepped to the edge of the water and sank to her knees besides it with a thankful moan (walking so long, even on her practiced feet, had left her aching, muscles popping in her legs from overuse. Trailing her fingertips in crystalline calm surface of the river and peering at the surface, Elsheba concluded that it was as safe to drink as they could hope for, given lack of any obvious growth in the clear waters. So she leaned down, dreads falling heavily over her shoulder to trail against her reflection, splashing cool water on her face and taking greedy drinks from her cupped hands. Once sated, she cupped her hands and rose them towards Sam, smiling. "It's good, Sammy - let's enjoy the beautiful scenery!"

Her eyes narrowed in teasing, accompanied by a bright smile - but she had no idea he had been referring to her. Nonetheless, such idealistic words about nature, as she believed them to be, were exactly what pulled her so close to Samoset..

Sam tried his best not to stare at Elsheba and moved to place his things on the ground. However, his eyes were very poor at keeping to themselves and lingered on her hair as she took a drink. Such gorgeous healthy black hair... He wanted to run his fingers through it. His cheeks flushed at the thought. No, he'd be punched, or worse. He could never get away with that!

"Oh, uh, yeah!" He agreed, moving towards Elsheba. "It is beautiful, isn't it? ... You know, I should probably fill our canteens, it's always good to have fresh w-"

Suddenly his foot fell out from under him, having found a weak spot in the dirt nearest the water, and lead him to slip straight into the water. He flailed a bit, sputtered, and tried to move his dreads from over his eyes.

"Augh, come on! It's like I can't see straight today!" He shouted. "What's next? A lightning strike? A giant rolling stone? Hail?"

One moment, the sweet sister was talking, cheeks still adorably flaming from (she imagined) her teasing - the next he had stumbled and fallen in a spectacular splash into the river. Water sprayed Elsheba, catching her by surprise and thoroughly soaking her, and so she blubbered just as much at the sudden wetness as Samoset did, wiping some of the water from her face.

Only, while he seemed so horribly embarassed by the turn of events, Elsheba found herself laughing. Mid rant, she splashed Samoset with a good handful of water, then smirked, eyes crinkling in mischief. "Don't go tempting fate, calling down all those wonders on us! It's just a little water!" She snickered, then finally stood, reaching to take a hold of Sam's arm so she could tug him from his unceremonious heap in the riverbed.

Once standing, Elsheba helpfully brushed long dreads from his face, humming in pleasure as his face finally emerged from the mess of frazzled hair. "... Huh. Really, Sammy - you DO seem off today. It isn't like you..." Leaning in close, Elsheba squinted and inspected her friend's face closely.

OH NO, she was laughing at him! Samoset turned as red as a fresh blossom as he was pulled from the water and reluctantly stood. This was so embarrassing, like, beyond anything he could have ever fathomed. Just when he thought he couldn't be any more of an idiot, FATE GOES AND PROVES HIM WRONG. Why did he have to be so stupid? Why? Was it a curse? A hereditary disposition? Only Aisha knew for sure, she'd created him after all!

He sighed, pursed his lips, and looked to Elsheba once his vision was clear. However, the closeness of her face made his eyes widen. W-why was she looking at him so closely? Was there something on his face? A bug? Grass? What? What was it? His heart thumped against his chest as if it were trying to escape and he wondered, just for a moment, if she might be able to hear it. Honestly, if he hadn't taken that little dip just now, he wouldn't have been able to hide the sweat that was undoubtedly forming across his brow. Maybe... Maybe he could just...

Steal a kiss.

"YEAH, I n-noticed!" He exclaimed, flailing to the side. "I'm really sorry, Elsheba, I don't know what's wrong with me. I keep getting distracted and just... Uh, uh... I... I'm sorry you need to spend time with someone as stupid as I am! You really deserve a better love-PARTNER-than me. I'm just a burden, a clumsy burden."

He was panicking so badly! Elsheba felt amused, but also frustrated at the same time - she couldn't see into his mind, or figure out just what had startled him so badly. Surely falling into a river wasn't so embarassing that he would go and lose the rest of his senses? Finally, after what felt like dozens of attempts, Samoset spit out some words and darted to the side, away from her and back to the edge of the river. Elsheba followed his progress, turning her body to watch as he went, her head tilted.

Was he sick? Hungry? Her mind turned to the rations in their bags as she stepped from the river, only to pause as he shot out his jumbled words. He must have hoped Elsheba wouldn't notice the slip up - but instead, her eyes widened, taken aback by his accidental admission - only for her features to narrow as he continued. "You fell into a river, Sammy, not out of a tree! Breathe, calm down!" Her words came out harsh, but once she'd calmed her own defensive burst of emotion, Elsheba dropped her gaze, looking over her soaking friend before finally reaching to take his hand, giving him what she hoped was a supportive squeeze.

"I'm not hunting with you just because we split into groups, Sammy - don't you know that by now? " Elsheba continued, sighing and turning her eyes from his fingers to his face, her eyebrows furrowed as if the sister before her puzzled her. He had said lover - or had almost said it, at least. The question now was whether she should let him continue along, believing she'd not caught it - or to bring it up.

Finally, her own burning questions urged her, dispersing the concerned glance and instead returning to one of mischief, her lips quirking into a smirk. "Hmmm, what am I going to do with you? Partner?"

Samoset let out a tiny squeak as his hands were squeezed, his face turning a ripe shade of red. Her words hit him hard, but wiped off like water. He knew he was overreacting, he just didn't know how to stop. Falling into a puddle wasn't something to get so upset about, and neither was tripping. He knew he needed to take a breath and calm down, just like she said, but every time he tried to breathe he felt his breath catch somewhere in his throat where it couldn't fill his lungs.

I'm not hunting with you just because we split into groups, Sammy.

"Y-you're not?" He asked, his mouth slightly gaping. He was probably overthinking that statement, she couldn't mean that the way he thought, right? There was no way, no way a-

Why was she staring at him like that?

"P-partner! Yeah!" He blurted before his brain could catch up with his mouth. "I mean, what do you mean by that? What are you going to do with me?"

God he's so cute XDDD

Whereas anyone else being so wound up like this would have caused Elsheba to lose her patience, with Samoset she just found herself smiling, widely, shaking her head at his disbelieving question. She didn't give him an answer to that - at least not out loud. Instead, she tugged him by the hand further from the river, her hand refusing to leave his own, even moving to gently lace their hands together. He was slightly shorter than she was - his hands smaller, and when she held their fingers together she felt a surge of protectiveness sweep through her.

Laughing softly in amusement, Elsheba leaned closer, watching Samoset's reactions very closely. "Anything that will make you stop acting like my feelings for you are such a surprise! Kiss you, maybe?" Her eyes turned down to his lips, but then she smiled and leaned back just a bit - more to tempt him to follow than anything. She couldn't help being coy, to be honest. "Or carry you around on my back until you stop panicking.
