NB! We will be doing egg responses in this Touching, which means that when your candidate touches an egg you will get a unique reply telling you what your candidate feels coming from the egg! In order to get an egg response please post its name in bold red when your candidate touches it. We will get a response up as quickly as we can, but we are only human. If your candidate is lingering by an egg after an initial response please post its name in bold red again, the egg may or may not have more to say for itself.

[ IC Ettiquette ]

1. Bow to the Queen before approaching the eggs. It's only polite, and if you're not polite to Sereth you may regret it.
2. No running, no shouting, no dive bombing.
3. Don't linger by any one egg too long - just long enough to familiarise yourself.
4. Again, no running, no shouting, nothing that even *looks* like it might damage an egg.
5. No firelizards on the sands.

[ the eggs ]

The eggs in this clutch are far smaller than a 6th Pass candidate will be used to, the gold egg for example is perhaps half the size of the last Queen egg seen on High Reaches sands. The size of the eggs given in the descriptions below is relative to the rest of the clutch. There are 29 eggs in total in this clutch, 22 of them are NPC eggs which cannot be Impressed here. You're welcome to reference your candidate visiting other eggs, just avoid describing them in any detail.

The Cunning Tactician Egg

This tiny egg sits right at the back but thanks to its fiery shell - smokey grey at the tip then flecked with reds, oranges, yellows, and blue-white at its base - it is hard to miss all the same. The little thing has a sort of attentive air about it, almost as though it's watching over its siblings.
- written for you by Muffin/Tawny

The Very Best Egg

The massive gleaming golden egg sits proudly in front of the bulk of its siblings, just behind the impatient hero. It leans forward and slightly to one side and as a candidate draws near they may begin to feel a surge of excitement that is not entirely their own....
- written for you by Tawny

The Impatient Hero's Symphony Egg

This smallish egg is a uniform bright red and situated at the front of the clutch as it is it tends to draw the eye. The little thing is tilted forwards, towards the entrance to the Sands as though it is eager to encounter questing hands.
- written for you by Tawny

The Massing Force Egg

This borderline huge pale grey egg sits at the back of the main cluster of the clutch. It is bolt upright and when a candidate touches the shell they will first get the impression of a soldier standing alert but at rest, watching them closely but without initial hostility.
- written for you by Tawny

Crystal Clear Egg

This mid sized egg gleams in the light as if every ray is refracted back from within it and tinted a brilliant blue. Getting near it requires one to pick their way through the rest of the clutch, though there is a little circle of sand around it as though no other eggs wish to get too close.
- written for you by Con

Luck of the Dice Egg

This small egg is lying on its side. It appears to be speckled with dots, almost like the sides on a dice. Is there a clacking sound as you approach it, or is that just in your head?
- written for you by Con

Butterfly Wings Egg

There’s a smell of copper around this large egg, which is a magnificent scarlet about it’s top, and black beneath. It stands a little apart from the rest of the clutch, though whether that reflects anything about the egg or whether it’s Sereth’s reaction to it is unclear.

Trying to carry out a Touching when the candidates were hungry was never a good plan and so it was a couple of hours after breakfast when Venk led his charges down to the mouth of the hatching cavern. It was a beautiful summer day; blues skies, warm sun, a gentle breeze to stir the air. Scattered up the sides of the bowl dragons of every hue lounged on their ledges soaking up the rays and in the peaceful stillness of the idyllic day all the troubles of the world could seem far away to the right mind.

The troubles of the world did not seem far away to Venk but being aware of them didn't mean he let them get him down, quite the reverse! People were getting sick, including some of his charges, but that was all the more reason to look for the good in life and to keep the healthy candidates busy. Since stepping down from his position as Weyrmaster in fact he seemed to have lost about ten turns in age and had enough energy for two men half his age, and the enthusiasm of three twelve turn olds on an Adventure.

"Right!" Venk halted, spun on his heel and beamed at his candidates as he rubbed his hands together. "Is everyone ready? Another historic clutch here today, but though they may be smaller than you're used to - than most of you are used to," he nodded at Seragee, "the rules are the same today as they always are; bow to Sereth when you enter, acknowledging the clutch father is polite too, don't run or raise your voices, don't spend too long with any one egg, and if you have a firelizard be sure that it keeps off the Sands. Oh," Venk gave a brief laugh, "and don't punch any of the eggs, alright? That's a bad plan. Now, if everyone's got that you can go on in." Standing aside to allow the youngsters to enter Venk grinned again and added; "Enjoy it!" as they started to troop past him.

It was hot on the Sands, much hotter than it was outside thanks to the rising heat and the lack of breeze. The cavern was at least light however thanks to the sunlight spilling in through the cavern mouth - no need for glows or torches today - and so the clutch was clearly visible. Closest to the candidates were a pair of eggs that almost seemed to be jostling for position; one egg was fairly small and bright red while the other, situated just behind it, was huge compared to its siblings and gleamed gold in the sunlight.

Nersha managed a light laugh as Sereth grumbled. Standing to the side of the sands she heard the approaching group, giving Sereth another nudge to stop her fussing. The gold dragon huffed as she nosed an egg into place, moving the sand so the egg was supported. She stepped back slightly and tried to settle down, lying on her stomach and watching the approaching candidates. Her tail just slightly curved around the perimeter of the eggs, twitching back and forth ever so slowly. She sent waves of comfort and love to her brood. Today was a big day, their potential riders were coming to meet them. Oh, but loves don’t fret if you don’t feel your right one, they just weren’t here today. And don’t feel pressured to make your choice now, just do what feels right when the time comes and you’ll be fine.

Nersha reached out mentally to soothe her dragon’s frayed nerves. Even with Berath’s help the dragon still worried. What if now was when they chose to do this terrible thing she was certain they would do? That egg Nersha had found was a threat, Sereth was certain of it. Now would be the perfect time to try and sabotage her young. She would not lose even a single one of them. Many had congratulated her on her golden egg and she was proud, but she loved all her eggs and would punish any misbehaviour towards any one of them. It didn’t matter what colour their shells were. She loved all of them. Again Nersha mentally comforted the dragon, turning her head to the group of youngsters she smiled. It was a lot easier to smile with a nervous Sereth than it was an angry one.

This was the day that Nimian had been waiting for. Next to an actual hatching, he had dreamed of a day like this. He would stand before the group of eggs, eyes wide, but eager and ready to try and experience every one of them and what they had to offer. "This should be interesting," he whispered to the nearest candidate after Venk had finished his speech. With the formalities and the rules out of the way, he figured it was time to get the ball rolling. He didn't mind being the first ones, and he wondered if, somewhere, Shylla was off in the stands or somewhere else close by watching over everything.

As her apprentice, he wanted to make her proud.

Giving himself a bit of a mental pep talk, he approached Sereth and bowed deeply to her. 'Ok, this is now or never, Nimian. You've been excited about this. Now you can actually experience things.' After bowing to the queen, he then looked over to the father of the eggs and gave him a courteous nod. This was a historic moment, indeed, and he couldn't wait. After he went through the motions of addressing the dragons, then came the time to decide which egg to approach first. There were so many of them, and each one was beautiful. Some would probably be tempted to touch the biggest egg right away, but not Nimian. Instead, he approached the Butterfly Wings egg and laid his hand upon the scarlet top.

Berath sent from her position at the back of the Sands. The huge scarred green's eyes glittered brilliant blue as she watched the candidates approach the clutch, the closest thing she would ever have to her clutch. That she had been allowed - been asked to help watch over the eggs was more wonderful than she could express or even really process. They were special, these eggs, and she most certainly hoped the candidates were worthy of them.

said Bereck's voice in Berath's mind, and she felt his derisive snort as he pored over a heavy tome down in his office.

Berath gave a very soft huff and prodded her healer mentally.

As the candidates started to file in L'mira straightened up and tried to look like a proper rider, dignified and self assured and so on. She was thankful that most eyes wouldn't linger long on her if they lingered at all so just standing upright should do the trick.

Beside her Regulith sat up straight too and surveyed the youngsters with alert green eyes. he sent to Sereth, his mental voice ringing with pride in their eggs and adoration for the golden dragon herself.

Touching Butterfly Wings brings a taste of blood into Nimian’s mouth - a sensation so extreme that for a moment it may feel as though he is choking on it, unable to clear it from his lungs, overwhelmed by crimson. Then, as abruptly as it begun, it is gone. It is replaced by a feeling of intense melancholy, and a yearning for - what?

The egg does not make it clear.

The fourteen-year-old lad's face scrunched up awkwardly when the taste hit his mouth. Huh -- well, that certainly wasn't what he had been expecting. What an odd sensation! While he wanted to question it, to try and figure out why the egg sent him such a feeling, he thought better of it. Best to just move from one egg to another, rather that dawdle and ask questions. "Well, that was unexpected," he murmured, more to himself than anyone else. It was as this statement left his mouth that he continued onward.

The Luck of the Dice egg came next, and Nimian couldn't help but smile when he saw its shell. The speckles on it were cute, and although he didn't admit it verbally, he was quite fond of them. The clacking noise, though, was a bit of a surprise. Such sensations these eggs brought forth!

Lex was one of the oldest among the candidates, and certainly one of the latest to be chosen and he was mostly okay with this. It was a spur of a moment idea and it had its perks, despite the lost of his glorious fizzy hair. Being able to read for one. He still found weapon class to be a bit amusing, he really shouldn't but some of his class mates were really, really bad.

Lex hummed sightly, gently nudging Templar back to his room as they approached the sands and a wave of hot heat. .... Who would punch a egg? He blinked slightly at Venk before shrugging it off. That was an odd joke if it was a joke and maybe he should have paid a bit more attention to some of the gossip.

He strolled onto the sands, not bothering to look to the stands instead focus on the eggs and the pair of small dragons. He bowed to both Sereth and Regulith before looking over the eggs and finally approached the Butterfly Wings Egg. It was Red and Black and stylish. Shinny!

Seragee had eaten heartily at breakfast. He was undoubtedly excited today and wanted to be well stocked for the day. Ever since the tiny gold Sereth had laid her clutch, the young boy had been looking forward to this day. Only the hatching could have had him more excited. Now more than ever he was grateful to his mentor for preparing him. It would have been agony to sit this one out.

He followed the candidatemaster down to the Sands. It was picture perfect, and he hoped that soon he'd have a beautiful dragon sunning itself like all these others. Thankfully he had not yet gotten sick though some other candidates had. Seragee flushed with pleasure as Venk singled him out by name; he nodded back. This clutch would be just his size. For today too he could even pretend he was back home and none of the recent past had happened.

His deepest wish was to Impress one of the young dragons that would be soon be hatching from this pile of eggs. Seragee took a deep breath to calm himself. He needed to be on his best behavior here. It amused him that the speal from the candidatemaster was the same no matter what time. He nodded to show he understood the rules.

"Thank you candidatemaster Venk." The boy trudged onto the burning sands. The morning sun made the eggs and their mother absolutely shine in its early rays. He bowed respectfully to Sereth, Nersha, Regulith, and his rider. "They are the most beautiful eggs I've ever seen Sereth. Thank you for letting us touch them." With duty properly done, he could now allow his attention to be taken by the eggs. Seragee sucked in his breath at the sight of the beautiful eggs. His attention was pulled to the two eggs sitting proudly at the front of the clutch. He walked up to them slowly to avoid startling the gold. Without hesitation he pressed his hand gently to the shell of the smaller The Impatient Hero's Symphony Egg eagerly.

Shiloh stepped out onto the Sands as they were released, running a hand through her hair as she did so. Right, bow to the Queen.... she did so, the motion a bit stiff but earnest, and then continued onward to the first egg. A few were leaned in her direction and a small, bright red one drew her attention as she fell into line behind a few others.

Her gaze swept those present, noting the way they lingered, their expressions as the touched the eggs... a literal spectrum of emotions running joy to fear. So interesting how varied the eggs were! Shiloh held no preference to the dragons, a small smirk playing across her lips as she saw a few shy away from the gold only for others to linger almost too long. She was simply all to happy to live in a place with food and water and shelter enough to be available at all hours on all days.

The only concern was the illness that currently swept through the Weyr, the thought floating through her mind to inspire a shift in her posture. Hopefully the eggs were well despite the sickness going around, small as they were.

Finally, the Impatient Hero's Symphony egg became available and Shiloh turned her calculating gaze back to the eggs at her side. Gingerly, cautiously, she set a hand on it and let her mind wander over the impressions it emanated.

Click, clack, smell of earth after rain, petrichor, clash of swords, a last throw on which all rests, don’t fail us now, a standard raised against the twilight murk, fire and brimstone. Luck of the Dice is full of sensations, and it wants to share them all with Nimian in a somewhat overwhelming rush. Having poured them all into him, it seems to be waiting, balanced on a knife edge for - what?

Butterfly Wings is more subtle with Lex - as he touches it, there is just a persistent drip, drip, drip, of some warm sticky substance that feels as though it is going to eventually build up to something really nasty. There is a distinct feeling that the egg is disappointed in him. He isn’t what he should be, nor is he as good as he should be.

The sensation is eerie, recalling saliva and blood and a few close calls in hunts and he lets the disappoint roll off him like the various nasties that had been in his life so far. Lex steps back, rubbing his thumb against his fingers in thought, much different then raising a flit.

He leaves the egg behind and decides that the next and most shiniest egg has to be THE VERY BEST EGG , he knows it a queen, but it is bright and shiny and huge. He does have a weakness for shiny and pretty things and having a military career or not isn't a deterrent. He place a bold hand on the shell, more prepared for the response.

Many more sensations and images came at the boy in a rush. It was almost overwhelming, but Nimian managed to hold his ground and take them all in. The ordeal left him a bit shaky, but he couldn't help but think of all the sensations, sights and smells that he just experienced. It was like being in some sort of story or adventure tale, and that was an awesome feeling.

"Cool," he said outloud, a lopsided grin tugging his lips upward. Having touched the speckled egg, it was time to move onward again. Nimian picked his way through the sands, peering around for any egg that might catch his eye. Light reflected back into his eyes as he gazed about, and it was then that his attention turned toward the Crystal Clear egg. How beautiful! How come no other eggs wanted to be around it, he wondered? Well, no matter. Nimian reached out and laid his hand on the brilliant shell. What was in store with this egg?

This wasn't Wen's first touching but it was the first without Jemi and Cai and that was making everything a tad daunting. He listened to Venk, lips pressed a bit tight in amusement at Venks warning, he was never going to let that go. Do not punch the eggs, and he mentally added on' I will make it the last thing you do' to Venk's speech.

He bowed to Sereth and gave a nod to Regulith before looking over the eggs and chose the tiny but brightly colored Cunning Tactician Egg to touch and laid a palm on the warm looking shell.
