The hospital was pretty easy to find. KD shifted from one foot to the other waiting for Willie. The sun was already sinking and night would be on soon. The abandoned hospital was behind her blocked from the public by a fence. She’d already staked that out and knew of a relatively easy way to get in, climbing a tree over the fence and then sneaking into the basement through a window.

A flashlight was looped through her hip. She didn’t believe in ghosts but she definitely did not want to get caught in the dark in an abandoned hospital. Those places always spoke to her of death and pain and did not make her feel especially comfortable.

The dark was closing in and not a lot of people walked around the hospital. It was sort of in its own block, not close to much else. KD wasn’t sure why the city didn’t do something else with it but the strange happenings in the city probably had something to do with it. Maybe they just weren’t sure something else wouldn’t happen to it.

“Come on, Westley.”

Quote:
Wille drove, but didn’t want to be too close, nor too far away for he parked and walked, which meant he was a little behind schedule, which was ironic since he spent the whole day waiting anxiously for the nights events. He saw KD waiting and quickly made his way over to her.

“Hey, sorry. I hope you weren’t waiting to long. Next time I’ll just pick you up okay?”

He looked over to the locked gate and frowned, not wanting to climb it even if he could. He looked to KD and grinned flashlight in hand though currently not on. “This is awesome, know of another way in though?”

Quote:
“Oh, it’s ok. I’m used to making my way around.”

KD didn’t drive. No one thought that was a particularly good idea considering she was usually doodling or something similar during driver’s ed. Her attention span wasn’t on driving when she could get around on foot or by bus. Which was probably just as well. Still, she wouldn’t turn down a ride home if he was offering.

“There’s a tree growing back there. We can climb up on one side and drop down on the other.”

And from there she could show him the window that opened to the inside. What they were doing wasn’t really legal, strictly speaking, but that was why they shouldn’t get caught.

“Did you bring a flashlight?”

Quote:
Willie nodded though he would likely insist, but he wasn’t going to argue that at all right now with adventure to be had. When she mentioned the tree he grinned eagerly. A tree was faster and easier that a fence and he was less likely to accidentally rip in pants of cut himself badly. “Sounds like a plan to me,” he said making a motion with his hand, “lead on. I’m right behind you.”

When she asked if he had a flashlight, he held it up for her to see and nodded, “Yup. It’s one of the LED ones so its pretty bright. Just didn’t turn into on yet because I didn't want to draw attention to myself.” He was aware of the illegality of what they were currently doing, not that he cared very much. They would be careful and they were going to steal. Just a little trespassing. That sounded bad in his head, but he pushed the thought away and followed KD.

“Do you think we will find anything cool? Anything spooky or mysterious?” He doubted it, but they might at least find something cool that told a story.

Quote:
There was something cute and reassuring about a gentleman.

She took him around to the side of the fence where an old oak overhung the chainlink. They’d have to climb, then crawl out onto the limb, dangle and drop to the grass. She estimated it would be about a 3 foot fall to the ground. She’d done worse, and not when she was trying to. Doing it now probably wouldn’t be the worst thing. She went first just to see how her plan would work. It took a little time but she managed to drop onto her feet without much trouble.

They’d gotten in. The same way would not let them out, though.

“I don’t know. It’s an old hospital. I heard it was damaged in one of those strange accidents around here that you hear about sometimes.”

Or maybe he hadn’t yet if he was new to town or stayed out in the country for a long time.

“I don’t know why they don’t fix it up. We could probably use another hospital in this town.”

Of course there were school kid stories that monsters lived in there and the whole place was haunted by the people that died, killed by the monsters. KD knew damn well monsters existed and hoped that they didn’t run into a youma. She wasn’t sure she was prepared for that.

Of course, they could always run if that happened like normal people.

Quote:
Willie followed listening to KD and being reminded of night time in Destiny City. He frowned not really liking the idea of going into the hospital. Not that he was afraid, but more because he didn't like the idea of putting the young woman in front of him in danger.

“I haven’t been here very long, but I’ve heard about the strange things. My classmates prefer not to stay late at school. At first they didn’t tell me why, but the news and gossip. I learned this city is weird. My best friend, she literally disappeared for like two month, right out of her dorm room. Her and like a bunch of others.”

He looked to the tree and figured that wasn’t too bad, pretty easy to pull himself up and jump from the branches. He didnt even thinking to lower himself down, he jumped out of many trees over the years. He figured he would be good. He looked to KD, “shall I got first, or would you like too?”

Though he didn’t want to possibly endanger his friend, he didn’t know just who it would be perceived to back out now, so he just sort of decided to hope for the best.

Quote:
KD wished she had powered up to check things out as Sherwood before hand. Maybe then she would know if something was there. But, then again, everyone would know she was there, too. She just had to take her chances. Now that she thought about it she was glad they weren’t going out to do this at midnight when there was a better chance of danger.

Idly she wished Arias was there, but he wouldn’t do anything like this. He didn’t even like sneaking into the backyard of a house that was for sale to use the pool.

“There’s an open window over here. It leads to the basement.”

She propped it up and wriggled through, dropping to the basement floor. It looked like the morgue with body cubbies lining an entire wall.

Great, of all places to start the tour.

“You don’t think there are dead bodies still in there, do you?”

Quote:
KD lead the way and he followed and he didn’t mind at all. This adventure promised to be an exciting one, hopefully not dangerous. He pushed the thoughts out of his mind as he dropped into the basement. It was truly too late at the moment. His eyes went a little excitedly wide at having dropped into what looked like a morgue.

He shook his head at KD’s question, “I doubt, but there is only one way to find out isn’t there.” He headed over to one of the cubes on the wall turning his flashlight on and looking for the latch. Once he found it, he popped it and pulled the door open. As expected there was nothing there, but it was a bit of a rush to open it.

“Welp, guess its empty. Rightly so though, don’t think families would appreciate leaving the dead behind, and it probably not very legal. Plus unclaimed bodies can probably go to science and stuff.”

She shone his flashlight around looking for the door and when he found it he looked to KD and grinned, “shall we move on, or do you want to check a few more?”

Quote:
KD grabbed his hand in spite of herself when he opened the door. She didn’t really think there was anything in there but thinking of youma had made her a little jumpy. She squeezed his hand and peered into the cell, breathing a quiet sigh of relief. It was empty, thank God.

“It’s probably illegal, yeah, just like this.”

As easily as she grabbed it she let his hand go, moving ahead in the room. There were papers scattered, some singed from whatever it was that closed down the hospital. She saw filmy x-rays on the lighted board on the wall. a flicked switch brought in power, surprisingly, and showed the images in the film. A chest, a skull, it was fascinating.

“Look at this!”

That was someone. The name on the bottom of the x-ray said Gordon Engstrom.

Quote:
KD grabbed his hand and he didn’t really notice at first being so focused on the body fridge, but he did notice when she let go before he went looking for the door. He felt momentarily dense, but let it slide.

Willie gave KD a smirk, “its only illegal if we get caught and we’re not. It’s not like we’re going to steal or anything, just looking around, right? Wonder if anyone has ever camped out in here?” He was just looking around the room when KD called him to look at an xray.

He moved over to the machine and looked at the x ray, looking it over carefully and slowly, “whoever he is, he got hit pretty hard with something heavy.” He pointed to the ribs on one side, “look at all those lines, look like fractures. And this ones broken entirely.”

He looked around, “We’re in the morgue, so I guess he died. Whatever hit him, probably killed him.” He paused briefly, “hey look, I think thats an autopsy table. Bet they cut open tons of bodies in here.”

Quote:
“That’s morbid, Westley!”

But what he said was probably true. The ribs were all cracked and broken. If she had to take a guess it was probably a car accident or something. Nothing natural seemed like it would be able to cause wounds like that. Of course everyone in the room had died. She shuddered, thinking about how they were looking at the last photograph taken of this Gordon guy.

What had been his last thought? Had he loved someone? Did they miss him?

He drew her attention to the autopsy table. She’d seen enough crime shows to know what an autopsy generally looked like. Sure enough there was a scale next to the table to weigh the harvested organs.

“We better not get caught. I’m not going to jail for this.”

She made it to the door and pushed it open to a short hallway that would lead up into the rest of the hospital. She shone her flashlight down the hall and gave a shriek, ducking back in the door before she looked out again and started laughing.

“I thought the statue was a person.”

She kept laughing at herself for her fear.

Quote:
Willie nodded he knew it was morbid, but very likely true, they were after all standing in room where they housed the dead for the hospital. He looked more closely at the autopsy table poking at the scale and wondering what the last organ that touched it had been. At KD’s words he gave a small laugh, “they would so just call our parents, but honestly that might be worse. I’ve gotten caught on the plantation before more than once. Parents never too happy about my inability … what did that see … to keep my feet on the trodden path or something like that”

KD moved toward the door before Willie fully realized, so when she screams he was at attention immediately and ran over to her looking ready to jump to action. When she said she thought the statue was a person he gave a grin and poked his head out the door and sure enough a statue sat in the hall. “Seems an odd place for that. That would have made me jump too.”

He reached for KD’s hand and shone his flashlight down the hall, “come lets see if we can find the coma ward and or some operating rooms. I heard Destiny City Memorial has a huge coma ward. Do you know if thats true? Think it might be true for this hospital?”

He moved to the end on the hall stopping momentarily looking for a sign, finding the one that pointed to the stairs he kept left and continued down the hall. It was dark and overly quiet, aside for the occasional drip of water. A shadow races across the wall at the end of the hall. “Do you see that?”

Quote:
“Your parents and mine have the same complaint.”

Her mother was constantly telling her that she needed to improve her focus, to work on the things that would propel her forward in life like her schoolwork and grades. Honestly, KD couldn’t really see how knowing Algebra was going to help her become a better artist. She was pretty sure whoever looked at her art would not be impressed if she got an A in history in high school. What difference would it make?

All the same her parents kept pushing her to do better and start caring about the tougher things in life.

“My dad is a real estate agent and my mom works part time as an accountant. Neither of them have fun in their work. I don’t want to live like that.”

She found the stairs, not really trusting the elevator. The coma ward? She was more looking for the burn ward or maybe the maternity ward. It seemed weird to her because it was this large place and no one used to it anymore. Whatever shadow he saw she missed, turning around when he asked her and looking for any evidence of ghosts.

“What? What did you see?”

She was ready to explore more.

Quote:
“My parents love what they do, but I mean I love it too, and they were raised with farming just like I was. I definitely think you should be happy in what you do. Plus everyone needs fun in their life right?”

Willie moved towards the steps and away from the shadow, he didn’t know what it was, and he honestly wasn't even sure if he really saw whatever it was. He looked to KD and shook his head, “It was nothing I think I’m just seeing things.”

He made his way into the stairwell and looked up into the darkness, almost never ending it seemed. There were papers on the floor, old news from what he could tell. One title read Destiny City tourist attraction on the rise. He didn’t see a date, but with the rumors about the city, he doubted very highly in was from recent years. He pointed his flashlight forward and started up, the stairs creeping beneath his feet, no longer use to the weight of being walked up.

He checked the door plaques for the floors reading them as he went up, “First floor emergency room, Lobby …,” he trailed off looking through the window panes on the door.

Quote:
“I think that fun is important in this world.”

And she planned on having as much of it as she possibly could.

“Look at this.”

KD handed him a news clipping about the opening of the big paramount theatre downtown.

“That theatre is over fifty years old. My mom is a fanatic about that stuff.”

And had drug her there often enough to see “a piece of history.” It gave them a hint of how long this place had been sitting there alone.

She took his hand again and peeked out into the main floor. KD was pretty sure they wouldn’t find what they were looking for on the first floor. The emergency room could be exciting but it was exposed to the outside by large glass doors. So, she moved upstairs further and read the second floor plaque.

“Maternity, coma, and hospice.”

This seemed like their floor.

Quote:
Willie looked at the offered clipping and looked to KD, “50 years, huh? That’s a long time, I’m surprised the light worked to view the x ray. I wonder if anything else in here works and why are they supplying it power if it hasn't been used in possibly 50 years. Seems kind of weird.”

He gave KD’s hand a squeeze as she peeked out onto the main floor, but hoped for no more surprise statues either way.

He followed KD and cocked an eyebrow at the 2nd floor plaque, “now that is some irony there. Life beginning and life ending daily on the same floor. Mr. Jonston dies and a baby Briggs comes into the world to take his place. This place must have wings. I can’t imagine new moms would like that very much.”

He pushed open the door and shone his light on the wall looking for a light switch and when he found it he flicked it on and the hallway lit up somewhat a light here a few there, until about 10 feet back one just sort of exploded causing Willie to jump and flip the switch back off again. He was lucky he didn’t start a fire.

“No more flicking light switches then. Sorry.”

Quote:
“That is kind of weird.”

But there was an East wing and a West wing joined by a small central corridor. The two wards were probably kept apart this way. Maybe it wasn’t so weird, keeping life and death so closely related. What was it her mother said? Every new beginning is another beginning’s end?

“Maybe it’s for hope so the dying know that life still goes on and it’s still good.”

She wasn’t sure that would be a comfort to her in their position but, honestly, it was the best reasoning she could come up with. All in all it was a relatively small hospital, probably because it was so long ago when it was built. She imagined there were less people in Destiny City then.

She jumped when the light flicked on an panicked that someone would see it before one of the lights exploded, making her jump again, higher, and put her right on edge.

“Don’t do that! Someone might see!”

She wasn’t worried about fire so much as getting caught.

She moved along the center corridor which seemed to be the coma ward, such as it was. Rooms hung open for the most part, abandoned but normal. KD spotted a door that was closed, and actually appeared to be locked.

“Hey, look at this! I wonder what’s in here?”

Quote:
“I guess that makes sense. I do not think most of the mother’s were likely to appreciate it though, either way doesn't particularly matter, right? The hospital went belly up and no one has to worry about it.”

He nodded when she told him not to flick the switch again, he wouldn't, but he frowned deeply. “KD, I don’t want to get caught either, but it’s been maybe 50 years. Why is the power on? It literally doesn't make any sense. I think maybe we should check that out. This place is off limits and no one comes in here right. It’s falling apart clearly not going to be used, but has working power. How many 50 year abandoned building do you know that have power, hospital or not.”

He moved further down the hall careful to avoid the glass from the broken window, passing a few door before he came across a huge glass window where the nursery where most of the babies must have been. He looking into the room, finding it eerie so empty and silent, not to mention weird, because he and all his siblings had been born at home.

“I want to see if maybe we can find the breaker. I won’t touch anything I just find the power thing weird.”

He moved to the door past the glass window and pulled it open walking into the room. “I’m glad my mom had me at home. This room doesn't look very comfortable for anyone, aside from the rocking chair.”

Quote:
“I don’t know, Westley.”

KD honestly hadn’t been giving it a lot of thought. She mainly just took things at face value, accepting them as they were. She didn’t usually give in to conspiracy theories or gossip because it really couldn’t be proven. There was enough excitement in her life already without adding insubstantial theories to it.

Still, now that he mentioned it, it did seem weird that a building like this was still on the power grid, for fear of fire if nothing else. It clearly wasn’t a teenage haunt since there weren’t the tell tale signs of graffiti and litter strewn about. KD knew of some kids in her school that hung out in places like this, old abandoned buildings and the like in town. They liked to think of themselves as being brave or tough. She wasn’t sure if she believed that but this seemed like their kind of place.

And yet, nothing.

She was kind of curious about this now and moved to find a map to see if they could find a control room or janitorial area or something.

“There. It looks like we need to go back down to the first floor. If we go to the end of this hall that should be the main control room, I think…”

Quote:
“You can’t tell me its not strange. I’ve been in many abandoned placed and they rarely have power, a place this big never. You saw what happened when I flicked the light switching out of curiosity, like an idiot!”

He was really curiously overly it was a curse, for him, if he was honest with himself. Before he was five he had ruined every childhood myth his parents had given him, Santa, Tooth fairy, Easter Bunny … he even made his older brother stop believe in the boogey man. Which now after being inducted into this war, he felt was probably a very real thing. He knew they probably should pry, but he was too curious already to leave it.

KD found another way back downstairs and he gave her a firm nod and held out his hand for her to take. “Any sign of danger and we’re out. Long as we stick together we should be fine right? We haven’t run into anyone and I’m probably just getting worked up.”

This night was turning to quite an adventure and he was really really glad to have met KD. He felt they would be really great friends, probably for a really long time. She could put up with his curiosity and was adventurous like him.

Quote:
KD moved them down into the lower level. The path she chose was a long route but it took them through most of the first floor. They passed by a burnt out room, probably the ER, and she had to pause, taking it all in. The damage was immense, walls completely black, showing the supporting structure underneath. Even now, all this time later, she smelled burning in the air. It was sad, and scary. She let out a sigh of wonder.

“Oh, wow. This is probably why it shut down.”

She didn’t want to linger long, though. Something about that room just felt bizarre to her. Maybe it was just seeing that kind of damage up close and imagining when it happened with people around and screaming.

“I think it’s in here.”

The door was marked private. She assumed that meant staff only. It wasn’t locked, the knob twisted easily in her hand. She pushed it open and paused in the doorway. A shocked gasp escaped her.

The office was in perfect condition, a medical chair on one side, a table on the other. It even looked supplied, with fresh supplies. Nothing in there looked old, dirty, or damaged. She doubted it could have been left this way for fifty years.

“I don’t understand…”

It was the first time their whole adventure that she felt actually afraid.

Quote:
Willie stayed close to KD but stopped when he saw the damage that seemed to have been caused by a fire. It looks abysmal, “that’s an odd sight for an emergency room. Did something blow up? I would imagine an emergency room would have tons of accessible fire extinguishers.” He stood there staring tempted almost to investigate but know it was probably very unstable. He could just see himself falling through the floor.

Willie turned when KD found what they were looking for and moved over frowning slightly when she said she didn’t understand. When he looked into the room he didn’t understand either. “Something isn't right here KD. This room is pristine.”

Willie heard a creek and turned slightly seeing shadows again. He cut his flashlight and he swore he heard voice. Dropping his voice low he whispered, “KD I think we need to leave. Now.”

He nudged her moving to close the door and head towards the exit, “the shadows I saw earlier. I just saw them again and I think we might not be alone right now. Let go. We need to go.”

Quote:
“It’s a mob hospital or something.”

When he asked to go she was more than ready to, nodding her head and taking his hand, tugging him from the room. She left it just as they found it, not wanting to let anyone, especially any lingering Destiny City mafia, know that they’d been there. Her mind drifted back to the Negaverse, though, and secretly she wondered if they were behind the shadows and the secret sterile room.

That only made her want to get out of there faster.

She rushed down the hall, pushing on the windows until she found one that was unlocked. It didn’t take long to pry it open and get out into the air, holding the window so he could follow her out.

“Oh, Westley, that was so freaky! Feel my heart.”

She took his hand and pressed it to her thumping heart, wild with fear and adrenaline.

“I think I will take you up on that ride home.”

Quote:
“Mob, you can’t be serious…” he just shook his head, but though that in this city really anything was possible he thought it more likely something to do with the nightlife he had been inducted into by a cat.

He followed KD’s lead trying windows quickly, but she got one open close and he followed her out it as quickly as possible. He nodded when she said that was freaky and laughed until he found his hand over KD’s heart. He felt his whole face heat up, he knew he was turning red. His eyes were a little wide, she surprised him and he could help star at his hand and therefore her boobs.

Her voice brought him from his stupor, “yeah,” he said and laughed lightly somewhat nervously. “Yeah lets get out of here, just tell me which way to go and I’ll get you home in no time.”
