Hobbies:
Coloring: Give this child a piece of paper and something to color with and she can easily spend the next few hours entertaining herself. Careful giving her an entire coloring book or you might find yourself going to the store for a new one in the next few days but at least she is trying to learn to stay within the lines. Color pencils are fine, she can use a small sharpener without feeling compelled to stick her finger in it however crayons are best. Markers and highlighters are iffy, although they're fun (especially the smelly ones), keep in mind you'll want to put cardboard behind the paper so it doesn't bleed through onto the counter top.
Dress up: In her room, Amelia has a white and purple painted toy chest that is filled to the brim with dress up clothes ranging from princess dresses to fun tutu's, tiaras, Mardi Gras bead necklaces, clothes that are obviously way too big for her... you name it she just might have it. Her room will undoubtedly look like a tornado ripped through it from dumping out the contents and trying everything on till she settles on an outfit. What happens afterwords is your guess. It could be anything from wanting to put on a play for you, dancing to music in the living room, or simply go to the park in something wild and fun. She is a bit eager to be a big girl and likes to try to dress herself just make sure to check that she has her shoes on the right feet before she goes outside.
Being read to: At 4 years old, in preschool, Amelia can identify most letters in the alphabet and tell you what sound they make and though she has a leapfrog that will say the words to her if she pokes it with the pen, nothing beats the sound of someones actual voice. The best time to read is obviously before nap time or bed time but in truth she would be happy have someone read to her all the time and just let her cuddle next to them so she can see the pictures while they talk in animated voices to denote the different characters. Just know, she likes to be the one to turn the page.
Virtues:
Friendly: See that kid sitting by themselves in the sandbox or the one that's alone on the swing set? Well Amelia sees them too! She is the kind of child that takes the initiative to invite others to play by asking if they would like to play with her or if she can play too. It's not that she doesn't long to play in the big group of tag running around the play structure, it is more that she wants everyone to feel included. If someone approaches her to play as well she would be more than happy to include them with smile so huge chances are her eyes are squinting if not completely shut.
Little helper: Amelia is not one of those snot nosed little kids that sit in front of the TV rotting her brains out, rather she quite likes to get involved and help out whenever she can.
- Cooking? She'd be happy to hold the measuring cup while you pour the liquids and then let her dump it into the bowl (then again she might be trying to suck up so she can lick the spoon). Just know if the ingredients involve eggs you might want to hold her hand to tap it gently on the edge of the bowl least she smush it into oblivion again and get gooey yolk all over the counters.
Working on laundry? Oh oh! She'll volunteer to put the clothes in the lower drawers or point out which clothes are hers (not that tiny undies and pink shirts are hard to find when she's the only girl in their home).
Cleaning? Not the most fun thing in the world but if you ask nicely or make a game of it she'll be happy to help with little more than a "Oh..Kay..."
Smile for me?: Exasperated? Frustrated? Annoyed? Overall not in a good mood? So long as you don't snap at her, you might find yourself in for a special surprise. If she disappears for a while don't be alarmed she more than likely retreated to her room to draw something as a gift. Just be warned that if she brings you a snack, don't look in the kitchen especially if it is cookies with milk. Her heart is in the right place and it is her desire to see you happy again.
Flaws:
Wanderer: If you tell her to stay in a general place she is pretty good a listening. It isn't that she's deliberately disobeying if she strays outside the play area, something likely caught her eye and she wanted to take a closer look. However, if you take her to the store or to a fair, anywhere where there is a lot of people, you best hold her hand or keep a vigilant eye on her. Given she does sometimes try to get your attention first, if you are simply too busy or preoccupied little miss independent will pick a random direction and simply wander away or find a place to hide.
Sensitive: Bullying isn't something she has had to worry too much about in preschool however she does take comments quite to heart if someone is teasing her or if she feels excluded she will undoubtedly start crying (sometimes she can just go find something else to do but will likely do so with a hurt or disappointed look on her face). Similarly enough if someone snaps at her out of frustration expect immediate waterworks and for her to clam up and hide under the covers in her room.
Headstrong: Politeness is the key with Amelia. If you tell her to go do something or break routine be prepared to deal with a grouchy kiddo that will cross her arms over her chest and sit her butt down on the ground in defiance. Snack time is when you get home from school or play dates, must read a book before bed but after desert; failure to follow these will result in a lot of complaining and telling you 'but ____ always ____ before ____'. Dishing out consequences to get her to do something does not work and ends with nobody happy.
