Dusk smelled like ferns, warm and perfumed by the sun. Sanuye's nostrils flared as she mulled through the grasses, exploring for any signs of young leaves she might've missed. Dragonflies were the mare's only company as the great star set behind her, the canyon black in silhouette. She raised her head and turned to appreciate it. When the moment passed over, she walked on. As she went, the list of herbs she wanted to gather before night grew too dark sounded off in her head.

Wild Licorice, prickly pears if possible (more like if she was lucky to find some before the Peccaries got their snouts on them), but mint--mint was her number one priority. It was difficult to maintain what little supplies she had, and she took great care not to deplete her known sources. The result was that she was constantly on the lookout for more sources. It was tiring, but worth it. The benefits of the herb were countless.

Not to mention she liked to snack on it now and again, but no, no, no, it was for others. That was her responsibility.

Feeling somewhat deflated by her momentary weakness, Sanuye's pace slowed a bit. What would she do with the mint after she found it, anyway? Just eat it herself in the end? She always acted like she did everything for the sake of others, but did she? There were hardly enough individuals to help in that area, but it was her own fault for not seeking others to help far and wide. She was always stuck in the same place. But she put herself there.

Glaring to herself, the mare hoofed over some likely hiding spots for mint with little effort.

"I'll never find some anyway..."

Somewhere, Inola's parents watched over her. She had to believe this. It was the one fact that had carried her through the horror of the Great Fire, as terrible as that time had been. As alone as she had been. She took strength from it, found moments of compassion and clarity from the knowledge that she was not alone. She would never be alone. Loss pervaded the Kawani lands. So many had known the death of a loved one, whether a family member or a friend.

As warrior and healer, the unicorn could help to protect those left behind. She could ease their hurts. If only her own heart's pain would ease. In an effort to find solace, she had journeyed away from her home, seeking out shelter within the wilderness. The villagers had pulled together, searching for a new home. It was time for her to find her own.

The sounds and smells of the forest filled her awareness. She heard something in the distance. Something that did not sound like a forest creature. "... Hello?" the mare called, raising her voice to (hopefully) be heard above the quiet. There were a great many things that might have spoken. It was not always safe to wander alone, yet... she did not feel threatened. Perhaps that was a mistake.

Sanuye's heart bolted in her chest, surprise sending a shock wave through her body. Her being startled had seemed to be a trend her life lately, and not a positive one. But she felt bad for thinking that--it wasn't the other's fault that she was so easily startled. And perhaps she had startled the mare whose voice she had just heard?

Recovering from the surprise, Sanuye called out, "Yes! I'm here," which sounded somewhat foolish once it left her lips, but she wasn't sure how else to remedy the situation. The mare stepped lightly forward through the long grasses and peered through some brambles where the voice had come from. She was hoping to reveal herself as a non-threat and calm whoever she had potentially startled, but she was beginning to feel like she looked...well, like an oddball. But maybe she was over-thinking things as usual.

She didn't see anyone at first, but then a glimmer of gold caught her attention and she realized it was a flowing mane. Once she saw that, it was easy to spot the mare the hair belonged to in the shadows of the trees. Her appearance was a gentle one, and it calmed Sanuye considerably. When her eyes found the other mare's horn, they hovered for a moment too long and her heart fluttered.

She tore her gaze away and cleared her throat nervously before saying, "I didn't mean to startle you...if I did," she added quickly, not wanting to sound presumptuous. "I was just looking...for something." Well, that sounded suspicious. Sighhh...
