It was windy. That was an understatement. Vassilis stood on the open plains with all eighteen of his eyes squeezed shut. He faced into the wind and kept each of his six wings tucked into his sides as close to his body as he could get them. He’d done the best that he could to spare the four small wings on his ankles from the blustery onslaught but there simply wasn’t anything to hold them against. The wind wrapped around his legs no matter how he stood and the small wings would come untucked and start flapping around without his say so. He had considered lying on his own feet for a while but that didn’t seem any more appealing. Instead he had finally resigned himself to stand in one spot saving as much of himself as he could against the weather. His midnight black mane and tail were whipping about behind him and all he could do was whimper and pray that the knots wouldn’t be so bad this time.

“Why is it so windy here?” He shouted into the sky. The only answer he received was a mouthful of dust. He promptly spat and tried to gently scrape the dirt off his tongue with his sharp teeth to no avail. Vassilis was never coming back to the plains again, that was for sure. It had seemed like such a nice place to visit. He hadn’t expected to end up grounded by high speed winds that never stopped for more than a minute or two. He needed to find shelter but there was nothing around. It was just him versus whatever hell the sky could throw at him, which seemed to be an awful lot if he was to be completely honest.

"Shouldn't the sky be dark and gray and stormy for winds like this?" The sky and sea painted mare muttered to herself, golden eyes narrowing as as a sharp gust caught her unawares and sent her into a barrel roll that was less grace and daring and mostly unsavory weather conditions. A moment later she righted herself, gritting her teeth as the sharp gust wrenched her wings back and made something painful begin gnawing at her shoulder.

High winds were difficult for even the most skilled flutter, considering the structure of their wings. And while with her wings, Dyani fared better than some of her pure kin, but Dyani still hated flying in such rough weather. The winds tumbled and tossed her through the sky as easily as a fall leaf, and she grew dizzy and weary of the sensation. Perhaps taking her smaller size for a flight hadn't been all that clever, for even though she was the size of a crow, she couldn't manage to keep a straight line.

As she was only half-flutter, she couldn't quite manage to make herself as small as her pure kin, which probably worked in her favor at the moment. Not that her true size was all that impressive, but maybe if she had gone for a normal flight she'd feel less like a leaf on the breeze.

'Yet another reason why I don't like being this size.' She sighed to herself as she fought the buffeting winds as they attempted to knock her out of the sky. 'Not that being regular size would be all that great, but at least it would be better than this.'

Thrown into yet another graceless tumble, the Cery-Flutter mare managed to right herself before smacking into the plains, but it was a close call. Close enough that she gave up on the whole matter immediately and grew back to her 'full' size.

"Anything is better than flying in this." She muttered with a flick of her tail, and folded her wings tight to her back as the winds on the ground made as if to tear her skyward. "At least... I think?"

There was a winged stallion not far from her nearly-crash-landing space, but he didn't seem to be faring much better than she. And considering he was larger and appeared much stouter, she didn't hold much hope for resuming flight until the winds had died. Shaking her head and sending her bells to chiming, the mare shifted nervously on her hooves and then gave him a winning smile. "Hi.. Umm... Sorry if I disturbed you."

Vassilis thought he heard a thudding noise off to one side. He didn’t want to look and see what it was. That would mean dust in his eyes. It was probably just a tree getting uprooted by the wind, he thought to himself. He had to force himself to ignore the fact that there were no trees in the area to speak of. He really didn’t want to open his eyes and it was a well-known fact that imaginary trees were heavy. Right?

He heard the sound of bells for a moment before they were lost to the wind and squeezed his eyes shut even tighter. He really really didn’t want dirt in his eyes. Vassilis was still holding out hope that he was only imagining sounds. The hope vanished the moment someone spoke to him. It wasn’t his imagination at play, someone had approached him. Vassilis slowly turned his head towards the sound of the female voice and peeked a single eye open just enough to catch the blurry outline of a mare. It seemed that another of his kind had been grounded by the winds.

“Hello.” He replied closing his eyes fully again. “Not disturbing. Just so much dust!” He explained trying to use as few words as possible to avoid another mouthful of airborne dirt. So far it seemed to be working. “Wind.” He elaborated needlessly.

Shaking her wings out a bit before folding them as close to her body as she could, Dyani admitted that it was not one of her better landings... But as she considered her surroundings the little fluttery-cery had to admit she was in one place and no longer a captive leaf on the wind. And after quite a bit of crafty flying, if she could say so herself. (And she did, for the record... Though there was no one to really listen.)

All things considered, with the strange terrain and the unknown area and the general tumult of the wind, it was even what would qualify as a fine landing. The wind was no fault of hers and she certainly had no hope of controlling it. So she would ride it to the best of her ability -and she had- then land as soon as she could -and she did- and regroup. So she was.

It was amusing, if not a little bewildering, to see such a strong-bodied stallion standing at the mercy of such wind. Even at her biggest Dyani was no giant, standing under the stallion's chin at best, even by her generous estimation. Which put him at good height, by even the meanest standards. Still, he stood stock-still in the middle of all this wind, eyes clenched shut... And, well, he looked a bit silly.

Which was interesting, all things considered. After all, he was taller than she (no difficult task) and muscled and well-proportioned. And with his paws and the membranous middle set of wings hiding between the lovely feathered ones, he should have looked fierce. And he did, fierce and tall and quite handsome and still with his eyes closed in this blasted wind. She couldn't help it, she began a soft chuckle that raised to a lilting laugh. It was all a bit absurd and very silly, and she couldn't even bring herself to feel guilty about the whole thing because she couldn't make the laughter stop.

Damned dust or no, he was quite a sight with his eyes closed and his wings folded and his quick peek in her general direction before he closed his eye again. When she managed to get her giggles under control, she coughed softly to clear her throat and peered carefully through her lashes at him.

"Yes, quite a bit of dust." She agreed softly, snorting as the wind chose that moment to blow a fair amount of it into her face.

'Perfect timing, thought at least I didn't get a mouthful when I was laughing. Little mercies.' She coughed and shook her head, sending the bell a-chiming once again. It gamely tried to be heard over the roaring wind, but the mare doubted the sound extended much beyond her. As it stood Dya was forced to flatten her ears as golden sand scattered through her mane and over her face, sighing ruefully as the small grains bit at her.

"A worrying amount of wind." She agreed, unsure if he would hear her or not but wanting to make sure she at least tried. "Are you from around here? Is it always like this?"

If so, she'd probably be heading back to some of the deeper parts of the forest as soon as she could. She wasn't cut out for flying in this sort of weather and the sting of sand on her wings was obnoxious. Besides, what good was it to explore and meet people if you couldn't look at them or talk to them without getting an eyeful or mouthful of dust? Surely that put a damper on things, at least as far as Dyani could see it.

She was laughing. Vassilis wasn’t entirely sure what there was to be laughing about but it was a good sound. A sound that said ‘I’m okay’ to the people around them and since Vassilis was under the impression that she had just crash landed being okay was a fantastic thing to be. Unfortunately it also seemed that laughing was not actually a good idea when there was dust blowing about. He heard her cough slightly. It wasn’t the type of hacking cough that occurs after inhaling a bunch of dirt though, so maybe she’s only sniffed up a small amount of it. If that was the case, than she was quite fortunate indeed.

She agreed with him about the amount of dust in the air and he bobbed his head up and down, then she snorted and he winced as best as he could with his eyes shut. Maybe she was not quite that fortunate after all. There was a short silence save for the faint tinkling of a bell followed by more speaking from the mare. Vassilis wasn’t sure why she kept talking, was she not bothered by the grit that was almost certainly flying into her mouth? From the way she was talking in was pretty clear that she wanted to have a conversation with him. Vassilis let out a plaintive whining noise. He really didn’t want to talk through a veritable blizzard of sand and dirt but he also didn’t want to ignore the mare or continue giving her short sentences. She was being far more polite than he was and Vassilis really didn’t want to leave her hanging.

It was the desire to be equally as polite as this mare that led him to a rather unpleasant idea. He had tucked his wings in so that they wouldn’t be injured in the wind but there was a second option with them. It was an option he would almost certainly regret the next morning but he wasn’t alone anymore and if the little mare could bear the storm just to try and have polite conversation with a stranger than he could return the favor.

Vassilis moved all at once. All six wings opened up, although the eyes on them stay shut, and he brought them up and out locking them together to form a very large wing on either side. Then he brought them forward to shield his face and finally opened his eyes. Peering through the feathers he could still see the mare standing there and he shuffled around until he was standing face to face with her before arranging his wings so that they would protect both of them from the flying debris and her from the worst of the winds. He was not so lucky. His change in position left his back completely exposed and his tail and ankle feathers were being blown forward. His tail kept alternating between tickling his belly and whipping his flanks and it was far from pleasant. At least now he could talk though, right?

“No, this is my first time coming out here.” He replied like the question had been posed seconds ago and not many minutes ago as it had been. “I’m Vassilis.”

'Too bad there was no one around to see that fine flying, Dya.' The mare lamented silently as she tightened her wings even further to her back. The wind kept plucking at them, grasping at her feathers and ruffling at her mane as though it could incite her to come play again. If it was nicer, she might have been compelled, for she fair loved dancing on the wind. But this wind was mean, just waiting to toss her who-knew-where. And she wanted no part of that. 'More flying later, when it is behaving, perhaps... Maybe it will clear up soon... For now, I can get some rest and hopefully a notion on if I'm on the right trail or not...'

So instead she stood in the midst of an unknown plain and watched a stallion significantly taller and stronger and larger doing his best to avoid the dust in this wind. And she giggled, because he was large and intimidating and endearing all at once and she had no other idea what else to do with this situation. Ducking her head and giving a soft snort when a bit more dust than was ideal got her, the mare shook her head faintly. While it was not yet clear if the stallion could speak -or would- he did make a sound something like a whine.

And then suddenly his wings were flaring, larger than she expected and quite handsome, truth be told. But instead of taking flight, which is what she had rather expected, he swept them around like a sort of shield. Staring in shock, Dyani remained momentarily frozen when he shuffled close to her. A moment later she shook off her surprise, stepping forward to meet him and ducking under the shield he provided. Her own wings were too modest to accomplish such a thing, but she admired the task.

"I am sorry if I disturbed you." She murmured when they were somewhat protected from the bite of the wind. "I am not from this place and not all too sure where I am going, so I have gotten a bit lost. But it is a pleasure to meet you, Vassilis. I am Dyani Alumine, just Dyani if it pleases you. I do thank you for this."

She tilted her head to eye the shelter of his wings, which sent her bells to ringing again. "I am sure it is not all that comfortable for you, I do not wish to trouble you too long."

She turned her head to cough again, clearing her throat. "I am seeking a Flutter herd, have you by chance heard or seen of any such thing? I was informed there was a valley, somewhere within this land... A place rich with flowers and perhaps a little difficult to reach without wings. A place founded by my kind. Since I have no family to speak of, I thought I might dry to find it. It seemed there as naught to lose in such a venture."

She gave a faint smile. "Even with this uncooperative wind, I have always been more fortunate than I expected. Again, I thank you for your kindness and your shelter, Vassilis."

Once she was beneath the shelter of his wings the mare turned into a regular chatterbox and she’d been pretty keen to talk even before the sand wasn’t an issue. He smiled at her, a broad, toothy grin every bit as white as his mane was dark, and shook his head. “I like the company.” He declared. It was true, he enjoyed being around other people even if they didn’t always like being around him. Most people were scared of him, either from his size, his paws, or his eyes. He hadn’t shown her most of his eyes but as she introduced herself Vassilis got the feeling that she really wouldn’t mind then. Or was that just what was known as wishful thinking?

The sound of her bell drew his attention and he found himself staring at the little silver baubles tucked behind her ear. She, however, was busy focusing on his wings fanned out above them. He ruffled his wings slightly and was a bit horrified to see a bit of sand drop down, he was going to need to soak for days to get the grit out of his feathers and coat. He’d half to soak for twice as long to get the joints to stop hurting from the weird pose paired with the beating from the wind. These weren’t things he said, though, there wasn’t a point in making Dyani think she was being a bother even if he had done this because of her arrival. That would be rude.

“It’s not so bad…” He replied slowly, almost cautiously as he continued to look up at his own wings. It was odd to see the appendages like this. Normally when he moved his wings in front of his body it was to shield his face and his face alone from something and it was very difficult to examine a feather when it was pressed right against your eyes.

Vassilis lowered his head in concern as Dyani started coughing and was even happier than before that he’d decided to shield her from the storm. Sand in the throat was far from a pleasant sensation. He thought that taking a break from talking might be beneficial but wouldn’t say as much. Talking seemed to be making her happy the way she kept going and being happy was a very good thing.

“A flutter herd?” He tilted his head and blinked. What he wasn’t aware of was that it wasn’t just the eyes on his face blinking. The four on his shoulders had also opened up as Vassilis thought about what he had and had not seen. Vassilis was so used to seeing things from several angles at once didn’t even notice that he was now looking up at Dyani at the same time that he was looking down.

“I’ve seen a lot of flowers but not a herd of flutters.” He admitted sadly. “I’ve seen plenty of herds with flutters though.” He added as thought that may be some comfort to her.

Dyani took a moment to take a breath, beaming up at the stallion in a gesture that was part silent apology for her chatterbox self and partially just appreciation that he was tolerating her... Actually, that he was sheltering her so she could talk and then tolerating her. That was definitely worth a thank you or three, and she'd work it into the conversation somehow. Until then, she gave him a bright grin in response to his toothy smile.

"I'm flattered and doubly blessed then." She replied brightly, shifting her wings in a faint fluttering motion. The sand grains stung the membranous sections of her wings, so she quickly ceased the gesture and folded them tight to her sides. With another harsh gust of wind her fawnlike tail curled down also, the sharp wind insistent on ruffling the hair all the wrong ways. "What luck that I happened upon you... I may even have to be grateful for this weather, where it was otherwise unbearable."

His presence was reassuring and solid, even pleasantly warm in this whirling sandstorm-like weather. She didn't even mind that he was so clearly towering over her, because he seemed the sort to use that strength for good. It made her feel safe, even as she wanted to ask him stories about himself. She'd never met anyone with paws, much less paws and wings, and such wings! And he had interesting jewelry and markings and... peculiar lines on his shoulders that she wasn't quite sure about.

"No?" She echoed, a little doubtful as she followed his glance up to his wings. "They're very handsome, you know. Your wings, that is."

She trailed off with a faint blush, ducking her head slightly. Still, for all that it was a bit forward, Dyani felt like that was a suitable comment; a compliment without being overly girly. Friends could say things like that, right? Even acquaintances?

Her ears swiveled forward at the mention of flowers, though she was momentarily distracted by the golden eyes on his shoulders opening to consider her. She glanced back, for a moment, curious and rather impressed, and then looked back up to his face because she was raised to look at someone's face when you spoke to them. Even if they did have eyes on their shoulders, she rather imagined manners were the same. Right?

Is there a polite way to ask? Something to consider later, anyway.

"Yes, I was hoping to find out news about my family. It seemed like if they were to travel anywhere, they would have gone to somewhere where our kind gathered? So I'd heard rumors of the flutter herd in their paradise-like valley. I don't really know if they are there, but it seemed like it was worth a shot. I was raised by a band of winds, they couldn't tell me much about my real parents, not even what color they were... So, this is an attempt to find out what I can even if it is a shot in the dark. Regardless, I rather like what I've seen of this land so far. I think it might be nice to stay, even if I can't find out anything about them."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 06, 2015 9:05 am

“No.” Vassilis repeated to put her doubts at ease. He’d feel some pretty significant soreness later but for now it was completely tolerable. And if he wasn’t imagining things it seemed like the force of the wind was starting to die off a little. Perhaps whatever had sent such awful gusts in their direction was finally growing bored of harassing the pair. They would still have some time to kill before the storm actually went away enough to leave shelter though, and that left plenty of time to continue entertaining Dyani with more chatter. Most of the chatter being Dyani’s of course.

“Thank you. I like my wings too. They’re good for flying and stuff.” Instinctively he wanted to spread them to show them off better but managed to stop himself before making such a large tactical error. People tended to admire his wings; something about the three sets was extremely rare in the area. They also tended to flee as soon as they realized his wings were watching them back. Dyani didn’t seem like she’d care though. When she’d glanced down at his shoulders Vassilis figured out that he’d opened more of his eyes but she didn’t seem at all phased by it. She just looked back at him and continued the conversation. Maybe, when the storm was over, he’d show her the rest of his glowing, gold eyes. Maybe she’d be one of about five people (including his family) that liked them.

Her own family seemed a bit unusual to him. She didn’t know where they were? Had something happened to them so that Dyani hadn’t been raised by them? It would probably be bad to ask those questions, Vassilis thought but he struggled to keep his mouth shut. “They’re probably the same color as you.” Vassilis chimed in looking over Dyani’s coat carefully. “Like the day and night sky had a kid.” He paused for a moment and considered Dyani’s lack of knowing anything about her parents more seriously.

“You don’t… you don’t think that’s what happened do you? The sky having a baby?” He hadn’t ever heard of such a thing happening before but Vassilis didn’t see any reason why it couldn’t happen. If he had eighteen eyeballs all over his body that he could still control and see out of why could the sky have children? The spirits could have allowed for something like this, he’d heard all sorts of stories about things that the spirits had done over the years, like taking perfectly normal soquili and changing their bodies to be more powerful with or without their consent. If they were that powerful then they could probably make a child out of a cloud or something. Being raised by winds made sense then too, they’d probably been flying and found a kid in the sky and taken her home to keep an eye on her. Or at least, that was one option of what could have happened to Dyani.

'No, indeed.' The reply, though short as it was, managed to reassure her immediately. Dyani gave another grin, her ears flicking back and forth to catch the sound of wind outside their impromptu shelter. It seemed like perhaps the fury of the winds outside was lessening, which at least made her feel less guilty about the whole thing. She really would hate it if her new acquaintance wound up injured on her account. And who was to say their conversation needed to stop when the weather cleared?

"I imagine they would be, quite useful indeed." Dya agreed easily, glancing up at his wings again. "Mine are not sufficient to bear me aloft in such fitful weather.. With those, I am rather sure that you could fly in a storm if the need arose. It might not be pleasant, but it could be done."

She tilted her head thoughtfully, imagining such circumstances and then brushing them aside again. Though she liked a good storm as much as the next soul, it was far more pleasant when experienced from the safety for a forest or cave. Flying in a roaring hurricane or among the spikes of lightning in a thunderstorm didn't really appeal to her. 'Then again, there are probably daredevil souls out there that like the idea just fine...'

"Do you think so?" She perked, intrigued by the possibility of finding her family. Or at least relatives. Could they be her family when she'd never met them? Wasn't family those that loved you and raised you and stood by you? Well, meeting relatives would be exciting enough.

The way he described her coat made her laugh, a cheerful sound like the bells bound in her mane. "Like the day and the night? Oh, well... Yes, I suppose I do look something like that..."

Still giggling she glanced at her own coat, flicking her tail back and forth as she shifted on light hooves. "But I think it suits me just fine. And as far as I know, I don't think that's what happened? I mean, wouldn't... wouldn't something strange appear in the sky, if that was the case?"

Suddenly subdued, she pondered the idea for a moment. "Is such a thing possible?"

Giving a thoughtful tilt of her head, she considered him and the golden eyes on his wings and shoulders. "So does that mean that you are a son of the wind, with all of your wings? A son of the dark, and that is why you have so many golden eyes? Does this happen often, and we just do not know?"

"I'm curious, can you choose which eyes to focus... Which ones you see out of? So you can see from a higher vantage point if you select to use those on your wings... Or a lower one from those on your shoulder?" She considered it a moment, and her tone went a bit envious. "My, but it would be something... Sorry for asking, it's just, it seems terribly clever and efficient..."
