I saw the same action in a Jackie Chan movie and I think it is symbolic meaning you are separated from the family or tribe that put your hair like that. So Zoku and the uncle are separating forever from the fire nation and/or the father and sister.
I think that is why he cut off his hair... sweatdrop

A friend of mine told me about what it means, it means that you're no longer under the control of your lord. So basically they're cutting of ties with the fire nation.

Yeah, it's to symbolize their quitting of the Fire Nation.
I hope he doesn't keep that stupid patch of hair on his
head forever. >_<
It looks stupid.
I was thinking that he could just say he was attacked
by a Fire Nation soldier to explain the scar.
I think it would be their eye colors that give them away sweatdrop

(anime movie)
When the prince leaves his village he is forced to cut his hair and never come back
so I guess its the same thing in Avatar

I think that Rokko looks hott with his hair cut and yah it's the tradition of if you cut off all your hair you are cutting ties with your family. I was so sad when he stole that poor girls horse thing though. I want Rokko to be good!! crying
