DD Guide Post Two: About Diving
About Diving Here's more info about how Dumpster Dive works.
• • • • Dumpster Dive is a feature where you can obtain items donated by other Gaians. On the flip side, you can also donate items for other users to obtain.
In this post, we'll focus on diving.
You will get one item each time you Dive. (You will get no items if the Dumpster is empty and you've already pulled 10 items from Admin that day.)
The items that you pull are completely random (to you). You can't choose which item you'll get. However, it's not completely random. The items are pulled in the order that they were donated. For example, if someone donates 1000 Philosopher's Caches to the Dumpster, all 1000 will be offered up in order before you see items from the next donator.
If it's a busy day, those caches will be pulled quickly. However, if very few people are diving... it will take a while to go through all of the caches. You can dive in the Dumpster once every five minutes. Pro-tip, you can use a timer if you want to be serious about diving.
If the Dumpster is full of items, you can dive as many times as you want. If the Dumpster has no donated items (Dumpster is empty), you'll obtain items that are donated by Admin. You can only get 10 items donated by Admin per day. After that, the Dumpster will tell you that it's empty and you will get no admin items. Keep checking the Dumpster though. You will still be able to obtain items if users happen to donate to the Dumpster (Dumpster is full).
The Dumpster resets at 12 am PDT. This means that the counter for admin items resets at that time.
If the Dumpster is empty and you've pulled 10 admin items, you'll be asked to donate to the Dumpster. This doesn't reset your counter; the Dumpster will still reset at 12 am PDT. This will put items in the Dumpster for others to obtain. You might even pull your own item out of the Dumpster if others haven't gotten all of them first.
When you get an item, you'll see the words "Send this user a message!"
This allows you to submit a PM to the user. Be nice; send kind messages. Don't like the item you got? Oh well. Don't tell them. Tired of pulling Philosopher's Caches all day from that one user? Don't send an angry message. Some users donate Philosopher's Caches with kind intentions. Other users donate Caches just to troll users. The more you send hate mail, the more they dump in Caches just to annoy those users.
All in all, remember that you're getting a free item. It's a dumpster. One person's trash is hopefully your treasure. The items you obtain will vary greatly in value.

DD Guide Post Four: About Donating
About Donating Here's more info about donating items to Dumpster Dive.
• • • • You can donate to the Dumpster. Some people use it as a quick way to clean "junk" out of their inventory. This junk will widely range in value. Often, people use it as a quick way to Chance Items that they don't think are worth selling in the marketplace. Some people throw in a few expensive items, hoping to make someone's day. And others use it to get rid of items they've obtained from Daily Chance.
Don't like the items you got out of the Dumpster? Donate it back! Or, consider taking the time to sell or trash the items.
All in all, remember to give back to Dumpster Dive when you can. ^ ___^ It's a great feature to help users get items that they couldn't otherwise afford. Remember how happy you were to get a nice item out of the Dumpster? Share the feeling.
You have the ability to donate anonymously or not. If not, users will have the ability to send you messages about your donations. Want to donate but don't want attention? Donate anonymously!
Go to My Gaia > Account Settings In the right column, under Feature Options, you'll find a Dumpster Dive setting. It says: "Allow Dumpster Dive to show me as the previous owner of donated items." If you have this box checked, users will see your username if/when they pull your donated item from the Dumpster. If this box is not checked, users will see "Donated by Anonymous" when you donate items. The current item value limit is 100 bil. [source] [source]
How to donate:
Donate items from your inventory. Click on the item you want to donate. A pop up will appear with item info. Choose the option "Donate Item" among the options at the bottom of the pop up. A new pop up appears. If you have multiple items, type in the amount you'd like to donate. Click "Donate Item" again to confirm once and for all that you are donating said item.
