Bernadette flew. It was a beautiful day in mid-spring. There was barely a breeze and the sun was shining brightly overhead. The air was even finally warming, enough so that even the tips of Bernadette's ears didn't feel chilly. It was so calm and lovely that she decided to take a fly.
She was not a strong flyer. She rarely went higher than she needed to to avoid the treetops. Today she flew a little higher than normal, but not by much. Today she was just enjoying herself, not trying to push her boundaries... not that she ever intentionally pushed them that far.
She drifted slowly over the water below. There were waves on the water of that little protected cove, but they were not strong. If it was summer, she would even have thought about going for a swim. She smiled to herself as she looked around. There were fluffy white clouds sharing the sky with her, and she couldn't feel more peaceful.

Federico swam about bored. He normally was an open ocean sort of mer himself. He loved company, but could go a week without seeing another face and be perfectly fine. He just needed some sort of sea plants to eat and thoughts in his head, and he could keep himself entertained for a long time. The past few days, however, had been different. He'd felt the sort of itch that was hard to put a name on, though eventually he managed. Loneliness. He needed company, and so there was only one thing for him. He'd swam to the shore, looking around for the soquili that liked to hang about by the water's edge.
The problem about living in the water was the vastness of it. It was so hard to find another mer, or even a kelpi out there. There were more soquili on land, so he looked to the land when he was in desperate need of company. Today though, even that failed him. He sighed as he looked at the barren shores. It looked like another day with only the crabs for company, though...
Something caught his eye and he looked up. There! There was something flying, but with light glittering in it's wings like nothing he'd ever seen before.

Bernadette didn't notice the eyes watching her from below. She was never a particularly watchful sort herself, and especially not when she was as relaxed as she was currently. As she drifted, she caught a scent on the breeze. It smelled like the blooming of some sort of early spring flower. Maybe daffodils. The thought made her smile. Maybe she would find a raccoon or a human to braid daffodils into her mane. Then she would be able to carry with the cheer of spring and the perfume with her.

Federico was captivated. He just kept staring upwards at the marvelous being that was up there. He had never seen stained glass before, so the way the light filtered through Bernadette's wings was utterly new to him. It was something he had never seen before, and didn't know if he would ever see again. Ordinarily he would call out to someone flying overhead, but he held his tongue now. Somehow it felt as if any words he might say would break the spell and send the being fluttering away from him...
