Pod duty was a great time for Evan to check twitter so he could remind himself why he never checked twitter. Once those two minutes passed, it was pretty much an exercise in patience and boredom, two things he had gotten accustomed to dealing with in his life before the island. Now, though, instead of standing on duty in the desert for hours watching for any unusual movement, he sat in an air conditioned room watching things not move. He would take doing either one of these over twitter any day.

There was a quiet tone, the same kind of noise that signaled the awakening of fresh blood. The whoosh of fresh air hit Isaac's lungs like a freight train; it was wholly unexpected and very nearly brought him to his knees. He let out a low grunt and braced himself on the door as it opened. That low grunt became the wheezing groan of a man in pain. He stumbled forward and hit the floor with his knees, the groan morphing into very brutal dry heave.

Evan had been planning meals for the week when the noise from the pod room roused him from his half-drowsing stupor. He blinked into full awareness in time to see the brand new hatchling fall out of his pod, and whoops, that wasn't supposed to happen. He rushed into the pod room, though his pace slowed as the poor guy threatened to vomit. "Hey," he said, half-friendly, half-tentative, "look, please don't throw up. Swear to God, the techs will make you clean it up before they let you out of here, and you don't want that."

Isaac gave his savior a very amicable smile, and then he very promptly vomited onto the other man's shoes. As he stared miserably at Evan's feet, Isaac cleared his throat, heaved again, and weakly said, "So sorry, my friend."

Evan's hesitant smile turned into a grim frown as the new guy threw up on his shoes. He turned on his heel and marched out the door, returning a moment later with a mop and a pail of water. "Welcome to Deus," he said, holding them out for the new guy to take.

While he was alone, Isaac managed to stagger to his feet so that he could clean himself up. Everything ached but despite it all he offered the other man an apologetic smile when he came back with a mop and bucket. That smile did not waver when the tools were offered to him, and Isaac took them up. The exercise, minor as it was, still felt incredibly draining, but having lived the majority of his life on the ocean surrounded by green tourists, he was very accustomed to cleaning up after them in ways such as this. It did not take him long at all to finish the job. Leaning heavily against the handle of the mop, Isaac met Evan's eyes. "I am Isaac," he said, starting to feel more himself again, "and I am very sorry for your boots."

"Evan," he replied shortly, less out of annoyance--though, yes, he was just a little irritated at having been vomited on--and more out of concern. If this trainee couldn't even handle coming out of the pod without incident, he was going to get a hell of a shock once s**t actually got real. "Do you know where you are and how you got here?"

"Yes," Isaac responded patiently. Everything was always done with patience. It was as though the man functioned at one speed: patient turtle. "What year is it? I went to sleep in late two-thousand and thirteen." He felt gross and dirty, and wanted nothing more than a hot shower.

"It's 2015 now. Spring, not that you can ever tell with the temperature around here." Two years sounded like it would be a long time in a pod. Evan had heard of people being podded and just never waking up again. "Once you're done here, we'll get you down to the Life labs. They'll tell you more about what to expect from here on in and get you situated with your division and your weapon."
