Jijikko watched intently, keeping a close eye on his newest young charge as they initiated their hunt. Since the prey was fairly harmless — clawless, toothless, feathered, noisy, but otherwise fairly weak fat meat beasts — he was not especially concerned, and figured it would be best to allow Mirela as much chance as possible to do it on her own, to whatever extent she could. Learning from experience, after all, was the best form, and so long as she was not hurt or in trouble, there was no harm in waiting a little longer to allow her the opportunity to take her time and work out her favored method for hunting. It was her training session, after all.

So, when the dalaks came into sight, Jijikko held back, observing and following in tow, but keeping out of the hunt itself as Mirela went to work. It startled him, frankly, how quickly she brought them down, and he blinked, lifting off and then coming to a land beside her as she grinned up to him, standing over her prey. He sniffed — and yes, they were definitely dead — then gave a rumbling purr of approval.

Very well done, and so quickly! One day, you will make a great huntress,” he said with a nod, stretching his wings and kneading the earth with his talons as he did, his stomach giving an appreciative rumble. Now, the question was, were they better off to eat here, or transport the food back to their temporary ‘lodgings’, somewhere safer and out of the way, up the rocky cliff expanses.

Mirela rumbled at Jijiko’s praise, chin notching up into the air slightly. As worried as she had been about learning to hunt, she had been just as determined to do well by her new friend and helper. So she had listened to everything Jiji said and told her to do. Being quiet was her weak point but if she concentrated and tried hard enough, she was able to make barely a sound. Maybe, eventually, she’d even be able to melt into the shadows as she’d seen her mother do once.

The thought of her family made her pause, for a moment, head sinking down some as she glanced away from Jiji. Though Mir was having fun here — with Jiji — she still missed her parents something terrible. So she tried not to think of it too often. However, every now and then random thoughts, like the one just now, would sneak past her defences. She snorted, digging her claws into the sandy earth, and forced the memories to the back of her brain.

She would find a way back to them, eventually. For now, though, she needed to get stronger so she would be able to take care of herself and actually travel back to Soudul. Mir glanced back to Jiji and then to the meat and gave a loud rumble. “Breakfast?”

Jijikko rumbled softly, a sound close to a chuckle as he nosed her briefly in encouragement before nodding. “Another breakfast never hurt anyone,” he observed. Except for a few dalaks, perhaps, but that was neither here nor there. He certainly had never suffered from ‘too much’ food other than the occasional stomach pain. Well worth it, in his opinion.

Unfortunately for the sake of breakfast, however, it was not long into the meal — barely a bite or two, even — before activity around one of the nearby rocky stacks distracted him: the shift of a stray shadow, and then the toppling tap, tap, tap of a few loose pebbles and debris. After lifting his head, golden eyes narrowing a fraction at the sight, suspicious, he tapped a talon to the earth himself and tilted his snout. Notching the tip up, he sniffed the desert air, seeking out anything amiss, and—

Sure enough, he bristled, scales rippling gold with warning as he shifted his posture, rear leg muscles bunching in preparation. “Mirela,” he rumbled out, this time far from a chuckle and much more akin to a growl of warning, “…move slowly behind me.”

The thing about kiandri dragons, Jijikko would note, was that even if you couldn’t smell them — for their scent was subtle and blended in some ways into the heat of the desert — the air changed when they were near, their blatant, raw energy seeming to fill each breath, tickling the lungs and making one’s scales stand on end. After more than one bad experience, Jijikko was none too fond of the breed. This time, though, with Mirela in his charge and far more practice under his belt than the last time he had failed someone in his company, he would not make foolish mistakes.

Mirela was halfway into her third bite when Jiji rumbled a command. Her head snapped up quickly, grow furrowing as she sniffed the air and moved to obey his command. Slowly, she slipped in behind him, still unsure as to what was out there. She could smell something but couldn’t quite place it. It was odd but familiar. Almost as if the dessert itself was alive with some sort of energy. It was something she had had yet to run into during her time on Eowyn (which was relatively short, when you thought about it). “What is is Jiji?”

“Storm dragons,” Jiji said, talons digging a fraction into the earth and nostrils flaring. “Kiandri. They have probably—”

But he was never afforded the luxury of finishing that sentence. Instead, out from behind the rocky stacks, a glint of wild gold emerged. Desert sunlight bled through the skin of the beast’s wings when the stretched. Then, it shrieked, and dove. Jijikko moved. Leaping outwards a full bound in front of Mirela, he landed with a bash, talons driving to the earth and magic yanking at it as he bristled and growled. At his call, it rose, a sand wall shielding him and his company from the first spear of lightning.

When the dragon swept forward, Jijikko kicked with his hind legs and dove, alighting into the sky and moving for it himself.

Mirela shrinked back, wings tucking in close as the ‘storm dragon’ came into view. She gave a small, low whine when Jiji moved in front of her and then took off into the sky. She watched as they fought, making sure to take in as much as she could from the older khehora. Mir had much to learn, still, when it came to fighting but she was better than she used to be. However, she knew that her skills would be subpar against a dragon with so much energy.

Her hopes of there just being one, however, were soon dashed as another storm dragon made itself known. “Jiji…!” Mirela yelped, swiveling around to come face to face with said dragon. It snarled at her, tail swiping out as it landed. She scrambled backwards, claws sinking into the sand and tail wrapping around her. Mir reminded herself to stay calm, to focus. She’d be no good if she let herself panic and Jiji would be weaker if he had to split his attention between her and the dragons.

She would help. Squaring her shoulders, Mir flicked her wings out, spreading them fully and notched her head up a bit. When the dragon snarled again and snapped her, Mir hissed in response. “Go away,” she growled out as she lowered her head down and narrowed her eyes.
