There was something nice about Nátʼoh's life, he realized.
He could do anything he wanted.
Under the vast canopy of an elephant ear tree, that's what he realized.
The stallion was lounging, as usual, taking refuge from the sun. But it was banking low in the sky now and the temperature had cooled considerably. As a result, his mood was way up despite his lack of sedative herbs. It wasn't a big deal, though. He was high on life at that point.
He didn't have a single bad experience on his mind. Not because he hadn't had one before, but because he just plain couldn't remember. His body stretched out in the shade and he tossed his mane, enjoying the feeling. He felt like everything was going his way. Screw responsibility, he was gonna keep on doing what he was doing for the rest of his life--absolutely nothing.
All he needed now was a pretty face to keep him company (not that he ever really listened to what mares had to say unless he was pranking them)...then this day would be the absolute best.

Elvira stretched her leathery wings one at a time in the shade of an enormous tree before settling them back against her body. Her stomach was still full from a recent hunt, she hadn't had to hide from any Purewalkers recently, and there were currently no demands on her life from a mate, from offspring, or from a herd. Yes, life was good, but somehow she still found herself ... bored.
She leaned her body against the rough trunk of the tree, sighed in discontentment, and looked around. She didn't expect to see anything interesting, but she could at least try to decide which direction looked most interesting for exploring. As she turned her head slowly, surveying the land, the air current shifted directions, bringing the scent of a nearby Soquili to her nose. Elvira flared her nostrils in interest. It didn't smell of Kalona OR Purewalker, though it was never possible to be too careful about the latter. Still, they were generally much more sneaky and so she felt safe assuming that whoever the scent came from was not a threat to her. Could it be possible that the stars had aligned to bring her a toy in her time of boredom?? She smiled at the thought.
Languidly, she lifted herself upright, resettled her wings against her back, and silently moved toward the source of the scent. As she approached a giant tree bearing huge leaves, she saw the rump of a Soquili sticking out slightly. She grinned, and approached from the other side. It was time to let this stranger know she was here.
"Boo." Elvira spoke as she poked her head around the trunk and into his line of sight. Let the games begin... she thought.

Nat was proud to say he didn't startle easily at all. He was a tough cookie in more ways than one, and he was normally so spaced-out that he never sensed approaching danger (not that his life was full of danger, but that wasn't the point). So when he heard a female voice say "boo" in an almost comical attempt to frighten him, he simply smiled and lethargically turned his head towards the owner of the voice, welcoming any and all mares at that point. His eyes were sleepy when they met the gaze of the voice owner's, and he blinked slowly.
Glass shattered in his mind.
His pupils shrank.
His eyes darted from one feature to the next in split seconds--the slit pupils, the fangs, the horns, the wings, the t--...t--...tai-...
It was a gods-damned Kalona.
Annnnnnnd high-on-life feelings gone. Bye-bye!
Nat's realization had happened in a matter of fractured moments, so now he shifted his posture a bit and forced a charming smile. For someone so eager to be lazy and do absolutely nothing, his mind was surprisingly sharp. He was in the weaker position--lying down while she was standing. But it wasn't like he'd completely stepped in manure yet--he still didn't know what would happen. Rightttttt...just smile and give her the old full-volume hair toss (on second thought, maybe that was going to be a bad idea). He was usually a hit with the ladies, but he had to admit, his experience with Kalonas was limited. But the stereotypes and stories were enough to send him whistling in the opposite direction whenever he saw one. Not that he couldn't exactly do that right now...
Going against his (perhaps smart) instincts, he followed what he knew best, which was to put on a show of friendliness and dashing looks.
"Boo yourself," he returned up at her with a smile, coolly shaking his bangs to the other side of his face. Yeah, screw this being high-on-life nonsense, he needed about two and a half tons of herbs right now, yep.

Elvira examined the stranger's face, waiting for the inevitable reaction. It became apparent in an instant that the face was male, and that there was a sharp horn protruding from his head. Ah, a uni, she thought. I'll have to make sure to stay just out of reach of that formidable weapon -- just in case he actually knows how to use it for fighting. Judging by the languid expression that was on his face as he turned his head to meet her gaze, he wasn't much of a fighter. But you never knew and it was better safe than sorry. If all else failed, her strong tail could be used to entangle his legs and trip him up if he tried to rush her with it.
Elvira calculated strategies for besting the stallion instantaneously, automatically. It was a subconscious habit that had formed during the defense of Kalona lands during the great Kalona war a couple of years ago, and she'd never bothered to try to shake it. It was a useful habit for self-preservation, after all.
In the same moment, a satisfied and amused expression spread across her face as the stallion's abject shock danced through his eyes. Elvira could smell the fear beginning to roll off of him. And yet, in the next breath, he answered her without belying his fear. Ah, yes, this would be a most fantastic toy. She stepped forward, walking past him slowly, tendrils of her tail tickling across his hide as she went. "And what's a handsome fellow like you doing out here all alone?" she asked sweetly. She smiled at him, fangs peeking out and glinting in the light. She studied his markings, bright against his otherwise dark fur, coolly examining him as if he were something to be devoured.

He felt her eyes rolling all over his body, and where they dragged, his skin crawled. His face was miraculously calm, although his heart felt like it was pretty much going to explode at any moment. Yep, any second now, he'd just have a coronary and straight-up die. Actually, that would've been nice in comparison to what he was experiencing. But he didn't much like the idea of dying, so he just had to fake it 'til he made it. That was the master plan.
At least, it had been, up until the moment she started walking and her tentacular tail actually touched him for a few seconds.
GOOD. GODS.
Hardly unable to bite back a shudder, he masked it with another nonchalant hair toss, and turned once more to face the Kalona. Nat was a lot of things, but more than anything he was a coward. He'd never been in a real fight, and sure as hells didn't know how to use his horn in self-defense. He didn't even ever use what little magic he had for anything good, either. What he was good at, however, was using his head (when he wasn't completely stoned) to get him out of sticky situations. Problem was, he'd never been faced with a situation he might not be able to get out of before. It was a pretty unfortunate first.
"Just takin' some shade," he explained with ease, and gestured to his side with his head, "Black fur," he added, "In case you didn't notice," and flashed a white grin.
But it was obvious she did notice from how much she was staring. Of all that was good and holy, why was she looking at him like that?! Did she want to tear open his belly and eat his guts while he was still alive? Or...OR...
Was she actually interested in--...
NOOOO, no, no, no, nono, no, nonono...not possible...not possible...Hahaha...haaaaaaa...gulp.
