Votzhem followed the Gani into the woods, aching but determined. He had always been the sort of person to fall down and get back up, even when back in Sauti.

Especially back in Sauti.

But how often he had screwed up back home, when he was a child, was far from his mind as he stalked the beast. Of course, it was aware of his presence – stalking was a misnomer – but he intended the result to be the same.

Meat.

Finally, the thick-bodied beast came into view, browsing on a patch of glowing Jahuaran plants without a care in the world. It eyed him idly with a wide, dark eye as it munched.

”Not worried, huh?” Votzhem muttered, adjusting his grip on his blades, ”Well, we'll see.”

And with that, he pounced, blades out and ready. They were his chosen weapon and, although they were not the best for hunting, they were well-made and normally served him well.

However, they tasted no blood that day.

The beast moved a few steps to the side and then, with a flaring of its nostrils, it charged. It rammed into him while he was still in midair, knocking him off his path and into a tree. He fell to the ground, stunned, his body aching. He was certain that he had broken a rib.

The Gani snorted, once, and trundled away, leaving Votzhem to recover in the spore-laden dust of the forest floor. Eventually, he managed to summon the willpower to move and, groaning, rose to his feet.

”Don't think that's the last you'll see of me, you bulky bonehead.” he managed to grunt, wincing in pain as his side twinged. ”Or maybe it is...” he amended, as he staggered off into the forest, sheathing one of his blades to free his hand.

Fine. Not Gani, then. He'd have to find something else for dinner.
