She was patrolling more lately, not that there was much to what she was doing. It was more like wandering than anything. Wandering aimlessly everywhere. Tonight it was the park, tomorrow it might be her school, who knew the next night and the next. Having magic was wonderful, being a knight with a wonder and an ancestor who liked you, amazing. Plucky her ancestor called her. War, HOWEVER, was daunting and sucked. She liked being a knight, not in shining armor, but in colorful cloth, but why couldn't people just get along and more importantly stop trying to kill her.
She shook her head and hauled herself into a tree with very little effort, standing in it and looking around scouting the park so to speak. She grinned momentarily to herself because she did this during the day and it was so much more fun.
She giggled, trying not to slip into a daydream and start goofing off, but failing. "Look out into the darkness, for possible danger Pharos. To the left to the right! Spot anything."

It was, maybe, cheating for Laney to do what she did. Spotting what was very plainly a knight up in the trees, looking out into the far distance, she took advantage of the chance to play a tiny practical joke . . . carefully sneaking her way under the tree and waiting to power up into her knight form until she was standing directly underneath the other knight's tree branch. Maybe it was a little silly, but sometimes she felt like she could use some silliness. "Don't forget to look down!" she called out up into the trees, grinning.

Pharos didn't noticed Laney approaching so she got quite a start when the other powered up beneath her and reminded her to look down. She jumped and feel, catching the branch by luck alone and hanging down.
"Hi," she grinned seemingly unaffected by the start or her near fall. She dropped in front of the cosmos knight. "I will certainly remember to look down next time." She gave a happy laugh.
"I'm Pharos," she said quickly holding out her hand, "you're clothes are so pretty. You look like a princess, or maybe elven. So colorful." The squire had wide eyes very much looked like she might pet the other, but she refrained instead happily waiting for a return greeting.

"Sorry," Hvergelmir giggled. "I really couldn't resist -- you looked so intent up there!" She held out a hand gladly to the one that was offered, clasping it and returning a firm shake. "I don't think we've met before. Hvergelmir Knight of the Cosmos -- and thank you! I can't really take any credit, this is just sort of how the outfit turns up on its own. I'm more the 'pajama pants at three p.m. type in real life." She took a step back, nearly tripping on a tree root before catching herself. Hvergelmir gave the other knight a sheepish look and straightened up again. "So, Pharos, how long have you been a knight?"

Pharos gave Hvergelmir a smile and nodded, "Yes. I can get a little caught up in my adventures. I like exploring. I havent done it in a while. All this knight business ... its magical but ... when people keep trying to kill you ... I mean idk."
"It's very nice to meet you Lady Hvergelmir," she said the title more because she thought Hver looked like a princess more than anything. "I like pajamas too, but I really like mixing and matching colors. I'm very colorful, but it would be really cool to look like a fairy or a princess!"
Pharos titled her head to the side lightly and thought on how long she had been a knight. "I um, since I just after I turned 15, so three years now." She looked to Hver curiousity bright in her eyes, "what about you? You must have been a knight for a while, since your a knight!"

Hvergelmir laughed, bemused. "I'll agree, the whole people trying to kill us thing isn't exactly ideal!" That was the understatement of the year. "Three years is a long time, though. I'd say you're doing pretty well for yourself." 'Lady Hvergelmir' struck her as a little bit funny -- Titan was the only one who called her that, and she'd never really felt she'd earned anything like that -- but she didn't want to protest too much and put Pharos off. "It's been a couple of years for me, too," she answered. "But I was a little luckier than you, I think -- I got to start out a few years older. I had enough trouble as it is -- how in the world did you manage sneaking out all the time? I'll bet you had people watching."

Pharos smiled and nodded, " yes, Im still alive and not kidnapped. When everyone went to Olympus that was a bit scary at first because disappearing and reappearing the first time it happened for me, lasted months and i got expelled I think it was from Crystal. So I guess that's pretty good!"
Pharos rocked on her heels listening to Hver, but ended up shaking her head. "I didn't have to sneak. I've lived on my own since I was 14. My mom and I have a farm, and for high school she thought it would be best if I went to an actual high school and wasn't homeschooled. After the kidnapping I had to beg to stay going to school in the city, but she let me, so I've never had to sneak. Not even now that I live with my best friend."
She looked curiously at the cosmos knight, " did you have trouble sneaking out? I can't imagine all this if I had to tiptoe around my mom."

And not kidnapped. Hvergelmir tried to school the pained look that came over her face, the automatic rush of fear and memory. Pharos couldn't have known -- it was an innocent comment. It was just . . . distracting. "Well, I'm glad at least that you never had to deal with sneaking around constantly. It's hard on families . . . I ended up having to move out, once I could." That was -- well, it wasn't a lie, per se. It was just a very friendly version of the truth. "It was always hard, though, with my family. Even if they'd known about me, they wouldn't have wanted me going out and getting involved in any of this. They're parents, you know? They want to keep me safe."

Pharos didn't really catch the brief look on Hver's face, making someone uncomfortable certainly wasn't something she wanted to do. "Well yes, my mother certainly wants to keep me safe, but at the same time I think she might understand, if I really ever had to explain it to her. But I certainly understand what you mean."
Pharos smiled lightly, "thinking of parents makes me wonder about knighthoods. Mine sort of run in my family, but it's not like that for everyone right? Not everyone has a ghostly family member trying to guide them along on you journey. My ancestor is an uncle. What about you? Is it like that for you or is it different?"
Pharos looked up to the sky and thought of her wonder, sitting up on the surrounding looking out on the galaxy. "What's knighthood to you?"

"Very different!" Hvergelmir confirmed. "I know a few Mercury knights who've had ancestors to guide them, and a Mars knight, too -- but I'm actually one of the reincarnated group. I don't think my past self left any descendants to carry on the line. But when I'm at my Wonder, I can remember things . . . just like I was really there when they happened." She smiled, settling down to sit among the roots of the tree. "It's very personal for me," Hvergelmir admitted. "Being a knight. It's something I've spent a lot of time thinking about. A while ago, at my Wonder, the Code showed me something -- this oath I took in a past life. Different from my current oath. It said this: " ' I am a knight of Hvergelmir. I am a being of free will.
"I will seek no refuge in convention, but strive always to move forward with honor. I will not rest on my laurels. I will not venerate the past for its own sake. Tradition is the enemy of progress and of free thought. Doctrine is the tool of oppression.
"I am a knight of Hvergelmir. I am a being of free will.
"I will follow no order blindly.
"This I swear by my Code of Honor.' " She shrugged. "That's what I believe. I believe in being a knight I can approve of -- a knight that doesn't just try to do what's expected, but what's right. I believe it's my responsibility to make the best decisions I can about what to do with the power I'm given." Hvergelmir raised an eyebrow. "What's it like for you? What does it mean for you?"

Pharos looked intrigued at the thought of remembering things like she had been there, but she was glad to have her ancestor also. He was a wonderful person and he'd probably be a better guide if she spent more time on her wonder, but she didn't. He'd been very helpful thus far.
When Hver sat, he did as well settling in front of her and listening. "The code is at your wonder?" She didn't remember anything about this, had it been said before, she wasn't really sure. Was it just her wonder?
She listened to Hver's oath and realized the young woman had thought about it far more that she had and she felt a little childish. She looked down slightly shamed face. "I um, I havent really thought fully about what it means for me. I know I asked you, but I uh."
She frowned her face a little bit, "I guess its about history, learning from the past to ensure a brighter future. I'm not really sure," she said twisting her sash. "when all this started it was all so magical and that was it for me. Proof, that magical things existed in this world, in me. It's like I don't know, its like being the good, so the world isnt shrouded in darkness. Does that make sense. Maybe I should think about it more."
She flopped back, lying in the grass and looking up at the stars. "What made you take an oath? You said its different, even though that's what you believe? Why is it different if thats what you believe?

Hvergelmir folded her legs under her, hands curled in her lap. "Only a little piece of the Code's there," she clarified. "And I know of at least one other Wonder that has a piece, too. There's no reason not to think they all do -- but I can't say for sure." Her experience with her own Wonder's piece of the Code had been brief. It had provided help, guidance at a time she'd needed it, but it was no substitute for the envious position of knights like Pharos, Mimisbrunnr, and Babylon, who'd had ancestors to guide them. The Code could do things that ancestors probably couldn't, though . . . it had for Mistral, at least. She'd been able to ask it for help with calling a whole group of knights to Olympus. It was funny, how refreshing it was to talk to a knight who'd been at the job this long and still had such a warm, positive attitude. Hvergelmir forgot, sometimes, how miserable they'd all gotten so quickly. She missed not worrying. Not being afraid. God, she missed laughing. Could she keep Pharos around full-time? Just bask in the joy of her aura? If only. "There's nothing wrong with what you're drescribing," she was quick to reassure. Wanting to keep the darkness at bay, it's a good goal. People need hope . . . in times and places like this, we all do. Bravery and goodness inspire people. That matters." Hvergelmir looked heavenward, eyeing the same sky Pharos was looking at. She couldn't see much; the leaves overhead blocked out many of the stars that light pollution hadn't. Still, she knew what that sky was capable of looking like at its best. She could imagine it. "That's an oath I swore in a former life. It's still something I believe, it's just -- there's never been any reason to swear it, not this time around. The oath I have now is something else entirely." She pointed to the mark emblazoned on her left shoulder, glittery iridescent. "This is my seal -- the mark of my vow. I've promised to show the Negaverse we're not here to conquer Earth. I vowed not to raise arms against them except in my own defense, so long as they're trying protect the Earth. I want them to know we aren't the invaders they've been taught we are."

Pharos grinned and nodded, "I will have to check my wonder to see if there is a piece there. I could even send you a note to let you know if it was there or not. It would be very interesting if it was there."
Pharos grinned when Hver reassured her on her what being a knight meant to her. It made her feel really good because she wanted to be light and spread goodness and cheer. "I'm glad, maybe we can end this and live in piece and everyone can be privy to the magic in this world, this universe. It's so empty, but maybe one day we can do something about that."
Pharos turned and looked at the mark that Hver pointed out, once Pharos thought at first just to be a part of her lovely outfit. Pharos reached out absentmindedly to touch it as Hver explained its purpose. She pulled her knees up and rested her head on them looking at her.
"You are brave to take such a stand. It's a good stand to take. We mean them no harm. We were born here, live him rightfully and peacefully. You are a guiding light in the darkness that shines light on their lies."
She tapped her feet lightly, "I like your vow. What's your wonder like?"

"Definitely tell me if you find it," Hvergelmir said, delighted at the prospect. That kind of information was important -- worth having. "Mine was hidden away for safekeeping -- a place only I can get to. So your Wonder's piece might be somewhere secret too, if it's there. It's worth investigating." She blinked. "Or maybe your ancestor has a clue. I only know of one other knight who knows of the Code being at their own Wonder, and she's reincarnated, like me." She waited, holding still while Pharos touched the seal on her arm. The rainbow ink shimmered like silt beneath her touch, the glitter reacting more like there was liquid beneath the surface than just skin. "My Wonder is very, very small," she answered, picturing it in her mind. "A white marble island, with a long, silver pier reaching out into the sky, and a temple where I lived in my old life. And at the center of the island is a great well, with steps circling down into the water -- the heart of my Wonder. There are columns all around the well, and the sky's covered in more stars than you can imagine." She grinned. To her, it was beautiful. A secret place that she could escape to when she wanted to be by herself. "What's yours like?"

Pharos nodded putting to memory to look for the code and to talk to her ancestor. She really hoped the it was there and she could speak to it. She wondered if it could be of some help to her. She listened as Hver spoke of her wonder making Pharos wish she could see it, but she kept that to herself. The wonder sounded lovely to her, even if small, which it didn't really sound to Pharos.
"My wonder is a lighthouse on the surrounding. It sits inside of a walled courtyard off the rainbow road. There are stone benches for resting, the whole courtyard is tiled with stone tiles. Its not very big, but I think its big enough to be seen all over the surrounding. At the top of the lighthouse is a magical flame, it lit when I became Pharos and hasn't gone out since. There are a few rooms in side it, but they are locked and I havent found the keys."
She sighed and lay back, "even with the flame the lighthouse doesn't work, the glass for the mirror is broken and partially missing. I'm not sure how to fix it, but my ancestor doesnt seem terribly worried about it. Maybe its something I just have to figure out."
She stretched in the grass, "Hvergelmir ... have you ever been to another wonder?"
