It was an absolutely dreadful day. The sun wasn't shining. The birds weren't chirping. And nobody in their right mind could remain happy on a day such as this. Just minutes earlier the sun disappeared behind rolling, dark clouds and it became rapidly obvious that a storm was doomed to break. So it did, complete with all the dramatic thunder and lightning the sky could possibly muster. Although one thing those in the surrounding area did have to be thankful for was the fact that the rain wasn't falling all that hard, at least allowing for some visibility. So the weather wasn't totally terrible.

Except it was, in the mind of a certain winged mare, caught in the midst of it. 'Perfect. Just perfect,' she thought as she shook her mane out, only to have it remain soaking wet. There was nothing the conceited little mare hated more than looking disheveled. After all, what were to happen if she met an eligible bachelor in the midst of all this, and she looked wet? That was absolutely unacceptable. Kintori sighed heavily at the idea. She was trying to get used to the fact that she was mateless again, but it was just so difficult. Her and Soren had split, albeit accidentally, quite some time ago, but it still felt strange. But she knew it wasn't right to hold herself back from finding happiness just because it felt strange. What kind of logic was there in that?

That is why, at this moment, Kintori was stressing mildly about her current situation. The area she was in had trees, yes, but it was nowhere near dense enough to serve as any sort of shelter from the storm. While she didn't mind watching thunderstorms from afar, she absolutely despised feeling wet. He wings were heavy and the fur on the tip of her tail hung limp. It wasn't in the slightest. This is why Kintori was trotting about the area like a madmare, searching desperately for somewhere to hide from the storm. Unless there was some way she could enjoy it, but she highly doubted that would ever happen.

Through the rain walked a snow white stallion with black markings, some shaped like ghosts the others distinctly tribal in nature. He was large by standards, standing well over most Soq and while his size helped him in battle it hindered him during storms. He was wet and his hoof falls heavy because of soaked fetlocks but he was far from unhappy. The rain was something he enjoyed immensely. It was refreshing, cooling, and helped the plants grow.
A smile firmly on his face he begun cataloging his report for the herd leader. After his confusing return to his family he'd begun training to be a herd knight. His herd was small but close knit and they always....
A frantic bit of movement caught his eye, halting the train of thought and he turned his ice blue eyes to see a pale mare with yellow markings. She didn't look quite as happy as he with the storm. He couldn't help the deep chuckle as he watched her skitter around sodden wet. He changed his trajectory and called out to her, "Greetings Milady. I welcome you to the lands of the Lunar Herd." His deep voice was akin to the sound of velvet thunder, pleasing to the ear. Stopping just short of her he bowed carefully, his wet wings stretched for balance and one leg forward. Righting himself he said, "Is there anything I can do to assist you? You seem quite... Harried." His easy smile quirked into a smirk, sodden curly hair hanging in his eyes, but his eyes spoke of kindness.

Kintori saw a flash of snow white fur out of the corner of her eye and decided to ignore it. There was no way in hell she would be up to facing someone right now. Not in this mess. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you asked), the other Soquili approached her. Upon hearing the silky smooth, yet surprisingly masculine voice, Kintori sighed heavily, hoping to the gods that he wasn't handsome, too. Swinging her head around she watched as an equally soaked stallion bowed his head deeply, greeting her like the gentleman he already seemed to be.

As he rose back up to look at her, Kintori's eyes widened slightly. Of course he was devilishly handsome, even with his long, visibly curly hair pasted to his neck by the rain. One of her brows quirked at the mention of a herd. "The Lunar Herd? I- I apologize for trespassing on your lands, then! I just..." she sighed heavily, flipping a bit of her mane out of her eyes. "I got caught in the storm and-" Kintori flinched at the crack of lightning. She fluttered her wings a bit, wishing they didn't feel so grossly heavy. "I apologize, I'm being rude - my name is Kintori." Bowing her head, she glanced back up at him with shining silver eyes. Not feeling the need to explain her obvious discomfort at the rain, she awaited a response from the stallion standing before her. It was already a rough situation, she figured she didn't need to make it worse by being pessimistic and dwelling on her current appearance. Especially since he looked much the same.

Rolling her name around on his tongue for a second to get used to it he said, "My greetings to you Lady Kintori, I am called Skaalbjorn but you may use Skaal if it please you." Her flinch at the loud crack of lightning made him curious. He'd never seen someone frightened of a storm. "You have no need to fear. The Lunar Herd welcomes all, so no offense is taken from your presence." His eyes traced her form seeing how truly sodden she was so he made an offer, "Please allow me to escort you to somewhere warm and dry so you will not catch cold." Opening a wing he stretched it out in offer of shelter from the rain. This mare seemed to be one who disliked being wet even if he thought her sodden look to be quite cute. A warm smile graced his lips as he waited for her choice to follow him or not.

The mare's eyes widened considerably at the stallion's name. Sure, she hadn't met many in her travels, but of those she had met, he definitely won the award for most unique name. She smiled. It wasn't unwelcome. And it certainly seemed to suit the stallion. Kintori bowed her head a bit once again and repeated his name, "Skaal." She smiled warmly at his comment, immediately appreciative of the offer. Although she didn't feel quite so cold in his presence, that didn't much help the issue of actually being wet.

Although as he stretched out his wing, Kintori felt her face grow hot. She wasn't used to accepting help from strange stallions, and when she did she often ended up in a bad place - lost, lonely, pregnant - not necessarily in that order. So it wasn't a surprise that her hesitation was visible, palpable. However, he seemed kind enough, and she really could use the help. She stepped forward and sidled up next to him, finding it easy to fit herself underneath his wings, as he was much larger than she was. "Th-thank you," she stuttered out sheepishly, tucking her own wings and looking up at him expectantly, hoping shelter wasn't too terribly far away.

As if sensing her thought he said, "My mother once told me that my name means honorable warrior." He smirked, "Maybe someday I will live up to it..." Voice turning thoughtful he continued, "But I shouldn't prattle on while there is someone in need of shelter! The herd cavern is just this way..." He pressed on through the wind and rain, careful to keep his wing in between her and the storm.
Soon the cavern came into view, and none too soon, for his wing began feeling sore from keeping it open so long. Not that he would complain. Knights bore everything stoicly and with a confidence that people looked up to... He rolled his eyes, or so his mother said. "Here we are Lady Kintori. Please rest here for a time until the storm passes. There is a bed of reeds inside and a small pond for water." Admittedly it was his bed he offered but he had no use of it right now.

Kintori wished she could articulate words to express how thankful she was for Skaalbjorn's kindness, but she knew she was unable. Instead, she decided to speak to him once they entered the cave. It wasn't a large area, but large enough for a small herd while still remaining cozy. She smiled, glancing about, and then looked back up at the stallion that was her savior. "I don't know about the 'warrior' part, but you certainly are honorable, Skaal." Walking forward, she decided to check out the cave a little bit. The bed he referred to wasn't exactly "roughing it," but not quite what she was used to, either. But she recognized how sweet of a gesture it was for this stallion to invite him into his herd's home, offering her a place to say.

Walking back towards him, she lifted her eyes (and consequently, her nose), and grinned at him. "I really do appreciate all of this." She stretched out her wings, flapping them in short bursts in an attempt to rid them of excess water. Kintori's eyes then crossed a bit as she stared up at her sopping mane, wishing it would just magically dry and go back to looking good. She then realized how silly she must look and refocused her eyes on Skaalbjorn, blushing a bit. "I, uh... don't need anywhere to rest," she stammered out, "I just... being dry. It's nice." Kintori giggled a bit uncomfortably, finding herself completely unsure of what to say.

He smiled at her, for her words were exceedingly kind, then watched as she wandered about checking out the herds home. He was thankful the herd leader wasn't home right now. Nothing like a clumsy stallion wandering around asking incessant questions. Rolling his eyes he was suddenly surprised to find her nose close to his, then she spoke conveying gratitude for his help. "It was the least I could do milady. No knight should leave a lady so obviously in distress." He smirked a bit wondering if her distress was the reason he helped or if it was just so he could talk to her. He was leaning towards the latter, but he was still a gentleman. He would never take advantage of her...
Suddenly he was more wet than before... He looked down to see her shaking off her wings and laughed as some water sprayed him. Laughing vibrantly he said, "The bed was just an offer. Around these parts storms can last for days at a time... He paused, "Truly I never understood why."
He opened his wings one after the other since they were so large, stretching them then settling them back. Finally he looked at her again, "Might I ask what brought you to these parts? I admit myself curious for one doesn't see strangers commonly." He cocked his head and awaited her answer.

Kintori grinned at his comment, enjoying the fact that he addressed her as "milady" and named himself a "knight." It was all very old-fashioned, but she found it endearing. He obviously took pride in being gentlemanly and she'd always enjoyed that in a stallion. Of course, that rarely seemed to work out well for her, but she shook it off. Her attention was drawn to the fact that she was shaking her water onto him and she laughed, shaking her head in a sort of apology, unsure how she'd managed to miss the chance that that might happen.

"Days?" Once again her eyes grew wide and she shook her head. "I would never impose upon you for that long! The rain isn't that terrible, really..." she trailed off at his question, tilting her head. Internally, she was attempting to figure out just how much to let Skaal - nearly a perfect stranger - know about why she'd been wandering around. Coming to a decision, she started, "I've been having a..." struggling for words, she settled on, "a rough time recently. I've sort of... kept myself cooped up the past few moons and I decided I needed to get out and see a bit more of the world, I suppose. So it wasn't purposeful - I just happened to end up here." Kintori nodded, satisfied in her answer, and smiled softly at him, hoping he wouldn't call her out on the obvious ambiguities.

He smiled back at her, mentally accepting her apology for spraying him with water but he didn't really mind. Skaal loved the water. Swimming, fishing... It was his haven from the responsibilities of Herd Knight. A wistful smile graced his face until a chuckle burbled forth at her incredulity over the length of the rain. "It would be no imposition milady. As Herd Knight I have the authority which grants you right to stay as long as you wish, but in the end the length of your visit is up to you."

Her explanation to why she was here had him eyeing her for a second, but instead of calling her out on her evasivity he chose to give her the benifit of the doubt and said, "I can understand how easily events in life tend to spiral out of control. My sympathies to you, milady." His thoughts turned to his lost past and the vibrant half angeni who gave him another chance. He had no intention of squandering it.
"Once the rain stops, and if you are interested, maybe you'd like to join me on my border patrol? Some of the places I pass by are sight too lovely to imagine." He smiled inviting at her.

Kintori smiled at his kindness, but shook her head softly, then firmly. "I understand that! And it's quite... quite admirable that you have so much power within the herd," she spoke, wondering for the first time what it would be like to live within a unit like that, within a herd. "But I don't speak of imposing on you, but the herd in its entirety. I wouldn't want to stay in lands I don't belong!" She didn't mean to sound dramatic, but she realized she probably came off that way (as she so often did) and laughed a bit, hoping Skaal would realize her intent.

Her smile softened as she bowed his head, acknowledging his empathy. Kintori began to wonder about the events in his own life that could have spiraled out of control, but knew it impolite to ask. After all, she had only just met the gentleman, and she herself had refused to give details regarding her sordid past. At his invitation, Kintori's eyes grew wide and her disposition perked up exponentially. "Oh? You wouldn't mind? That does sound like it'd be mighty interesting..." Although she didn't do much traveling and her recent adventures were her only adventures, tramping about with a handsome stallion guide by her side sounded like it could be fun, for once. And she could use a bit of fun in her life. "Sights such as what? I didn't get to see much of the lands before the rain struck... Care to paint a picture?"

He smiled at her trying not to laugh at her dramatic comment and the way she seemed to deny that it existed with a single laugh. She was such a fascinating individual.

His grin grew wider, "Hmmm, interesting sights to see..." He paused for a moment hoping to make it seem more tantalizing. "Well there is a lake so deep that it appears dark as the night sky, a waterfall that hides a cave with glowing flowers, and a plain that, when the sun hits it just right, looks as if it's on fire." His home had so many wonders, "But if I am entirely honest, for me it's the travel that is the fun part. The sights are just a side benifit."
Skaal had always had so ethnic of a wanderlust that was never truly satiated. It was why after his return home he chose the Knight's proffession. Travel was as ingrained in him as breathing was for him to continue living.

Kintori admired the way the stallion's face lit up speaking of his herd lands. There was a passion inside him that obviously existed when it came to his herd, and she wondered again what that was like. She'd lived in the same home lands for most of her life with the same mare coming and going constantly. Even growing up, although she'd lived with her family through foalhood, once she'd grown to self-sufficiency Kintori left, not having seen any members of her family since.

Realizing that her thoughts were making her seem like she was otherwise distracted, she nodded and looked up at him. "Any one of those sounds absolutely incredible, Skaal." And they really did. As Kintori didn't do much sight-seeing in the first place, she was having trouble even imagining the places he described. She just hoped they would have time to visit at least one while she was here. "You know, you really are lucky to live in such a grand place. Getting to travel to your heart's content while still having a home and a herd to come back to... it's nice, isn't it?" She was walking around the cave once again, idly flicking her tail.

He smiles at her and said "It can be a wondrous place to live but at times my herd mates can be infuriating!" His smile turned to a pensive look, "Before you decide to travel with me you should know something." He couldn't help but pause as he watched her, "I have no memory of my past and as one who bears the kalona blood I do eat meat so hunting is a necessity. Does any of this bother you?" He knew that his mother and herd mates often became disturbed by his eating habits.
