“I don’t like how… disposable the whole group is” M’ere’s voice was quiet, meant not to carry further then where they stood at the very head of the ship. “Two who’re barely more then Weyrlings, a load of those time riders, and then… I know I’ve done enough to piss off the leadership lately, though I dunno about you and L’ssa. This expedition is exciting, but…”

She pushed a hand up through short curls, her face looking a little worn.

“…I’m worried they’ve loaded us down with liabilities and people they think they can spare. No one from first wing to back us up, and I'm the only person with any experience undercover?”

Re'ka sucked her teeth, drummed her fingers on the rail and kept her eyes fixed on the horizon, she felt a lot less queasy when she looked out into the distance. It also had the effect of not drawing attention to their conversation by leaning in to whisper with M'ere, which was probably good given the topic she'd just brought up.

"I don't know, the time riders makes sense but I agree it's a bit strange to send newly graduated Weyrlings. Would've expected more from your wing too, and maybe a First winger. If O'ail is using this as a chance to show off why not have a few of the preening peawherries in the mix?" Re'ka drummed her fingers again and shook her head slightly. "I'm surprised there are so many of us at all after the attitude O'ail took at first. She obviously had a major change of heart but...." She trailed off there, her mind wandering to the private instructions she'd been given. Had M'ere been given orders like that too? Had the others?

“They gave us a Wingleader” M’ere pointed out a little hopefully, before lapsing back into silence for a moment. The skinny greenrider peered down into the water, as if it would give her the answers she sought. “…are we being set up to fail, somehow?"

Re'ka's brows knit together and she shook her head before she'd even really thought about it, reflex more than anything else. "No," she elaborated after a pause, "I mean, I don't see how it would benefit O'ail for us to fail and she's an honorable woman. Right?" Now she did glance briefly at her companion, this sort of thing was... well it was M'ere's area not her's, her area was hunting bandits and hitting them hard - she was good at it, proud of her skills, and confident enough to be comfortable with the gaps in her skills. "Let's say we have been, who's done it and why?"

“I don’t know” M’ere said in a low frustrated hiss, her hands tightening on the rail. “It just seems all wrong, but I don’t have enough details to say why or how… and maybe it’s all in my head?” She was used to unwinding conspiracy and problems, and maybe she was just… bored? It was a terribly long voyage, and there wasn’t as much happening as maybe she’d like. "I'm worrying you for no good reason"

"Heh, na," Re'ka smiled down at M'ere and gave her a nudge. "I'm not worried, whatever's up ahead - strange islanders or strange plots - I know we can handle it. Anyway, we'll go down in history for this," she gestured at the horizon expansively with one powerful arm. " The first riders to set foot on these islands in how many centuries? Shells, foiling some dark plot would probably make it all better, Harpers would be all over it like a kid with a fresh tray of bubbly pies."

M’ere nearly tipped sideways, squeaked, and grinned, snagging Re’ka’s free hand and giving it a squeeze. “I’d like to go down in a Harper tale or two, no lie. Do you think any other riders have even been out there? I mean, it seems terribly... southern”

Like many riders - and Pernese in general - she held to the feeling that... well, Southerly was dangerous. There was something dreadful that way, and going there was a mistake.

"Sharding right," Re'ka grinned, returning the hand squeeze as she looked back out at the horizon. "I don't know, from what I picked up when they first saw them the islanders thought dragons were giant firelizards so I guess they don't have stories about them. Stories do get forgotten though, or changed or whatever." A lot of stuff did, according to the time riders for example people really had come from the stars and she'd always thought that was a ridiculous story. "One way or another though I'll be glad when we arrive, I was sick of this tub the minute we stepped onto it," Re'ka added with a sigh. "Give me dastardly plots and somebody trying to chop my head off any day over swaying up and down like this."

“I can push you overboard if it helps” M’ere suggested, delicately disentangling her hand. “In fact, I will. Sometime tomorrow. Or maybe the day after. You’ll never see me coming”

(there was a grin on her face)

(the sort that lead to trouble)

"Ha, if I'm going down I'm taking you with me," Re'ka grinned back and gave M'ere a playful shove, only a gentle one though because she didn't actually want to send her skinny friend sprawling. "And I'll have my revenge too, somehow, sometime when you're not expecting it either. A swim actually doesn't sound half bad though, I might take a dip when we camp - uh, anchor for the evening. Want to come?"

“Hey!” M’ere swayed, then took a step away, out of Re’ka’s reach. The other woman was substantially taller and stronger then her, which was always a challenge. “I’ll take the chance against scary underwater monsters if you’re along"
PostPosted: Sat Apr 11, 2015 7:12 am

"Glad to hear it, maybe we'll find a shark to wrestle," Re'ka replied, gesturing expansively at the water once again. "That sure would break up the boredom, and it would be a great story. We can claim we did it anyways even if we don't, see if we can convince anyone." She doubted it but it would be funny to tell such a blatant lie with a straight face, at least an attempt at a straight face from her. Re'ka wasn't really a very good liar, it wasn't a skill she'd ever needed.
