Criani was accompanying Honoka into the forest today. They had both decided to go looking for some food together near the plainlands of Serenia. Criani smiled at the full grown Gaili as she flitted through the forest, blending in with the golden brown of the scenery. Such luck that. Criani stuck out like a sore thumb.
She had to hide behind rocks and trees, and hope her pray did not see her.
Her student had finally learned all she needed to be a full grown Khehora, and Criani was proud. Honoka, if she wished, could live in the wild away from her family, but Criani understood the pull of staying around the area where her mother lived. It had been all Honoka had ever known, her homeland, her home clan. An odd clan it was, but still her clan and family.
Criani shook her head out of her thoughts, and listened.
Something was wrong.
There were no birds singing, no foliage rustling, even the wind seemed to be still. If she strained her ears, she could hear the babbling of a creek some distance off. That seemed to be the only thing in this forest alive at the moment besides the two khehora.
She sniffed the air, and went dead still.
That was the smell of dragons.

Honoka loved going on hunts now. She still had a few issues with being patient, but practice like this helped a lot. Cri was a good teacher, and Honoka was happy that her friend had taken her under her wing when she was younger to teach her about being a khehora. Though Honoka knew that it was her Mama that asked Cri to teach her when she was younger, she was happy Cri accepted.
But now she was old enough to try her hand at some hunting alone. She liked the company though, so she was happy that Cri had suggested a hunt away from home.
She moved carefully through the trees and looked around every time she stopped to hear and gauge what pray were in the area. So far they were not having any luck with finding any game.
It was strange. Everything seemed silent. It seemed as if the air itself was waiting for something. She could hear a brook near here, but that was all. She sniffed the air and questioned the response she got.
It was a strange scent. It wasn’t too thick, but it made her scales stand on end.
She looked around and saw Cri standing dead still. This alarmed Honoka greatly, she had never seen the older Khehora stand so still.
She went to move toward her, but Cri seemed to shake her head a bit. She looked around and then moved stealthily around to where Honoka was.
“Dragons.” Cri said.
That was all Cri could get out before she heard a roar that shook to Honoka’s soul.

Criani heard the roar of the dragon. So many nightmares coming to life… So many memories.
It didn’t sound too far off. Perhaps if they ran they could get away. Just as she was about to suggest to Honoka to run, she saw the dragon she smelt earlier. It was coming full charge at her from the other side.
“Run!” Criani said. After making sure Honoka was already running, she took off running after her friend.
A surprise attack. Dammit she should have known better. It was nesting season and they had wandered too close to a nest.
“Turn here!” Criani said catching sight of the brook that she had heard earlier.
Criani splashed down into the brook, Honoka crashing down the bank in front of her. Honoka just rolled with the fall and just kept running down creek bed. Criani head a crash behind them and turned to see what was chasing them. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw a Ysali running behind them. Larger than normal, this must have been the mate of the one they had heard calling in the distance.
Suddenly, another crash in front of them turned Criani’s head forward. It was a smaller dragon, Ysali too. A string of curse words rattled through Criani’s mind as she skidded to a halt in the middle of the brook. Honoka, thankfully more wise than graceful, stopped too.
“W-what now?” she heard Honoka say.
Indeed, Criani thought, what now?

Honoka had never been so scared in her whole life. Well, maybe once when her Mama was attacked. But she had shown him who was boss.
However, she was not a small lithe thing anymore, she was a grown khehora, and couldn’t move as fast as she once could when smaller. However, once again, she had more magic than she had last time, and she could fly. Perhaps a dragon wasn’t so bad…
One of the dragons gave a roar and Honoka rethought that. Yup, dragons were scary.
“Honoka,” she heard Cri whisper, “You are going to have to pull on your training I gave you. I can’t tell you what to do, but you will just have to do anything you can to get out of here, you understand?”
“Yes.” Honoka said nodding.Cri had taught Honoka everything she had known about magic, and how to move it along. It was now to be put to the test. She would not only use it to save herself, but Cri too. “Meet you back at the camp.”
She looked to Cri, and her friend nodded. The camp was outside the forest and in the open plane. The dragons wouldn't follow them there. It was too far from their nest. It would be safe there. The dragons came closer to them, snarling. The smaller one in front of Honoka dug its claws deep into the rocky bed of the creek. There was no way Honoka could trap it in the dirt as she would like to do, the ground was beneath the rock, so she couldn't manipulate it that way. So, she decided to put distance between her and it before it thought to jump on her.
Honoka reached out with her magic, and pushed the earth up from below the dragon quickly in front of her face. She solidified it with her magic to harden it. She then dashed away to the side, and up the bank before the dragon noticed. Perhaps she could lead one away and leave the other for Cri.
As she bounded through the forest, she heard the snarling and crashing behind her, and saw that the dragon she had blocked indeed followed her.
Honoka smiled. Now the odds were even.

Criani heard Honoka rush off after she felt her student’s magic work. She didn’t dare take her sight off the angry male dragon in front of her. Thankfully, she heard the female run off after Honoka, however knew it probably wasn’t best that a dragon went after her.
Criani shook her thoughts from her mind and focused on the dragon before her.
It growled and then so did Criani. Both seemed to agree on one thing, words were not needed to communicate. Both hated each other mutually.
Criani pulsed out her magic, readied to use if she needed it. The brook was fortunate for her, or she would have been forced to either not to use her magic, or waist valuable time pulling water from the air.
The dragon took a step near her, and she took a step closer to the water. The closer she was, the faster she could respond if she needed. Criani opened her mouth and growled a warning. She wasn’t about to start a fight when it was a simple misunderstanding, at least on her part. There had been no warning that there was a dragon nest nearby.
The two stared at each other for what seemed like hours than mere minutes. Criani took a step back, still with her magic at the ready. It was a move to show him that she wasn’t willing to fight unnecessarily, but was willing to all the same if he made the first move.
The male grunted and stepped back too. Criani lessened her magical pull on the water near her, almost to the point of reigning it in. She took another step back but kept her eye on the dragon. She would only turn if he did as well.
The male grunted again, gave a low growl, and then turned. He kept his eyes on her as long as he could, and then went on his way down the brook bed, eventually scrambling up the side and back into the forest. Criani kept her magic at a low pulse till she could barely smell him.
She pulled the last of her magic in, and then sighed, glad the tense standoff was over. She then sniffed for Honoka’s scent. She went about following it up out of the brook bed and into the forest. She would lend what hand she could to the fledgling to get her out of the tight spot with the female dragon. Hopefully she wouldn’t be too late to prevent a fight between them.

Honoka had led the female dragon away from the creek for a few minutes. She was smaller than the dragon, thus more agile. She weaved and bobbed beneath fallen trees, putting obstacles in the dragons path. The more energy it took to charge through the obstacles, the more tired it would get.
At least that is what Honoka thought. She then came to a clearing in the middle of the forest. She came to a halt on one side and turned to face the dragon. She gave a growl, and let her magic flow deep into the earth to be at the ready.
The female dragon came crashing though and stood still, a growl on her lips as well. Both knew they couldn’t keep running all day. Honoka felt the dragon’s plant magic flow on top of hers at the ready as well. One magic was so closely linked to the other, it would be hard to keep control on what happened Honoka thought. It needed to end without a fight, she knew, mostly because she had no real training in the art of using claws and teeth to defend one’s self.
It was a tense few moments. Honoka didn’t back down, and neither did the other. Honoka stepped back with a growl, warning that she didn’t want to fight unless the other started to attack. The dragon snapped its jaws and clawing the earth. This female was justified, in Honoka’s opinion. They had wandered too close to the nest, but to be fair, neither khehora had any idea till the last moment that there was a nesting ground close by. To be honest, Honoka had no idea what dragons smelt like till now.
Honoka stepped back again, growling at the female. This didn’t look promising.
The female moved to the side snapping her mouth open and close. Apparently she took serious objection to someone coming close to her nest. All Honoka could do was keep backing away growling.
After what seemed like hours, with neither giving ground, Honoka smelt a familiar and welcome scent. Criani was near somewhere. Apparently the dragon smelt her too and growled. It was now two against one.
Again Honoka backed off and growled louder, gaining the attention of the female dragon.
“I want no fight.” Honoka growled in draconic. “We meant no harm, and I am sure your nest needs you more. We will leave as soon as you go.”
“How do I know this?” snapped the dragon back in draconic.
“You have my word, nothing more.” Honoka shrugged, “What would I do with a dragon egg? I am not a two-legger.”
“You stink of them.”
Honoka shrugged, “I live with one, but they are far from here. Do as you please, but know we mean no harm. We would have gone in the direction of your nest if it was so.”
The dragon seemed to calm down at that logic. Honoka couldn’t blame her for being protective. Gods only knew what could happen to any egg of hers if she had any.
“You better not be lying, dragon dung four-legger.” Snapped the dragon.
The dragon backed up, not taking her eyes off of Honoka. In an act of faith, Honoka pulled in her magic, leaving a thread released in case the dragon got ideas. The dragon seemed confused at her act, but slowly, slower than Honoka had, pulled in her magic as well.
As soon as the dragon reached the other end of the clearing from Honoka, she turned and ran into the forest. She heard a roar, and then fading sounds of brush and footfalls from the massive being. Honoka pulled in the rest of her magic, and as the smell of the dragon receded, Honoka flopped into the tall grass, exhausted.
She never wanted to deal with a dragon again.

Cri watched the female dragon go. Upset to be sure, high strung dragons. Especially the females she thought as she gave an audible huff. But she knew she would be as high strung herself if she had eggs to protect.
Still, there was no need for all the jaw snapping and name calling.
Criani made her way to the obviously fatigued Honoka and nuzzled her a bit to reassure herself she was alright, and to offer her praise for handling the dragon well. Criani wouldn’t tell Avani about this. It might hurt the babies she had inside her. Which was strange enough for Criani anyway.
“You did good.” Cri said smiling.
“Ug. I don’t ever want to see one ever again.” Honoka said rolling her eyes up to look at Criani, “Two were enough.”
Criani chuckled. This clearing seemed far enough, but it wasn’t camp, and every moment she spent here, she thought of other dragons coming to the same wrong conclusions the other two did.
“Let’s get back to camp.” Criani said nudging Honoka till she stood up, “It’s safer there and we will find something to eat I’m sure.”
Honoka smiled and agreed.
As the left the clearing, Criani looked back over the clearing.
Honoka was right though, she could never handle more than one dragon at this point. She nodded in resolve, and turned to go forward in more ways than one.
