Squire Newgrange was dealing with a lot of new things—things he didn't understand, and things he thought he unerstood but which he apparently did not.
Not really a surprise there.
Wandering through Destiny City, he had a renewed interest in trying to understand just who—what—Newgrange was, and his recent update…
Hadn't answered any of the questions he thought it would.
But just because he couldn’t make sense of things didn't mean he wasn't trying to.
Wandering through the woods was his favorite past time; while it didn't always yield anything truly productive, it cleared his mind and gave him the opportunity to think. Usually, he was accompanied only by silence, but tonight…
There was more than silence clinging to the darkness.
At first, he had found himself wandering towards a senshi signature. And then he had heard the faint noises—whimpers, or cries. It was enough to make his blood run cold, and he moved briskly towards the sound. "Hello?" he called out, eyes straining in the darkness. He could hear fine, but he was kicking himself for not bringing a flashlight—or something.

Lysithea hadn’t moved from her spot. Her arm was in agony, and it felt as though her soul was in agony as well. Merlinite had been turned into a monster before her very eyes…and then he had ran away…he just ran away and there had been nothing she could do…so she just stayed where she had been left.
She wasn’t sure how much time had passed, it had grown much darker, that was for sure…
The senshi wanted to just be alone…but there was a voice that reached her ears. Quickly, the girl stopped her crying as best she could, letting nothing else out but a hiccup. A rather loud hiccup…
She didn’t want to get into any more fights…she didn’t want to die tonight…that was for sure. And she was too damn tired to realize it wasn’t an enemy approaching…
Just too damn tired.

There was the silence Newgrange had been expecting—but now, it wasn't the silence he wanted.
A part of him told himself that if they didn't respond it meant that they didn't want to be found, but all he could think about was that if his sister was hurt or upset, he would want someone to stop and help her.
And then, of course, he was worrying about his sister, so the moment he heard that hiccup, he beelined for it.
"My name is Newgrange," he said into the darkness, very careful of where he was stepping. "If you're all right, I'll leave, but just let me know. If you're in trouble, I can help," he offered; he didn't think that a senshi could be overpowered by a civilian, and he didn't feel a Negaverse agent or anything sinister around, but…
He knew better than to expect that there wasn't something evil lurking around every corner.

Lysithea bit down hard on her lip. She wasn’t sure how this guy…this Newgrange was going to help. She didn’t think anyone or anything could help right now. Especially this guy…what if he was just another person from the Negaverse? What kind of a name was Newgrange anyway…?
Her lip trembled and she finally decided to say something. Anything…the first thing that came out of her mouth.
“How can you help me? Nobody can help me…”
She wasn’t even the one who needed help…well…maybe a little but…Merlinite needed the help…and that other woman…Painite…she…she was such a monster…
Another sob found its way out of the senshi’s mouth and she raised her good hand to cover it, trying to really figure out how she still even had the energy to cry.

he words, the cry—the sheer fact that she was out here by herself—tugged at Newgrange's heartstrings. He was closer to her than he thought, and it took only a second for him to locate her in the darkness. Even with the trees hiding the moonlight, the white of her outfit helped him find her. He knelt and wanted dearly to place a hand on her shoulder to comfort her, but he didn't know why she was crying and he didn't want to make it worse.
"Hey," he said, voice soft. "I don't know how I can help if I don't know what's wrong, but if you need help, you have my full attention, I promise."
Concern—legitimate, worried, concern—clung to each word; he spoke softly but with conviction.
"What's going on, what can I do to help?"
It seemed pointless to ask if she was okay—obviously she wasn't, he just didn't want to pry.
Stranger or not, he just wanted to make it all okay.

Lysithea looked up at the dark shape that was looming over her…she tried to listen to the words, and almost wanted to answer. Almost just wanted to let this guy know everything but…but she just wasn’t sure. Nothing made sense anymore. Nothing felt right, nothing just…felt…that’s all.
“I need to go to the hospital.” That was what finally came out of her mouth, the words soft, almost inaudible. “Can you help me get there? My arm’s broken…and I think one of my ribs is cracked too…but I’m not sure…”
She shook her head. “It was awful…she was a monster…and she turned him into a monster…and I can’t…I need to find him…but I can hardly move…I can just hardly move…my name’s Lysithea…”

A cold wave of emotion rushed through Newgrange, and his mind stopped for just a second as her words sank in. He had never seen someone really hurt, and the mere thought of the condition she was in left stones in his stomach.
But his desire to help her was unwavering.
"Lysithea?" he began. "That's a pretty name. You're a senshi, right? I'm a squire. Barely anything but a page, I'm sorry. If I were more experienced, I might be able to think of some way to help than just escorting you to the hospital, but I don't think," he suddenly felt out of breath; like there was a pressure on his lungs. He didn't want to deliver the bad news, but…
"…I don't think it's going to be easy to get you to the hospital." He was torn between being optimistic and being realistic, but he could reassure her that everything was going to be okay when they had a plan.
"The good news is, the hospital isn't too far away. The bad news is, either you're going to need to walk there or let me carry you. You can tell me all about it, all about who…who did what."
He crouched so he could be nearer to her, both to try and reassure her and to make sure he could even hear her. "It's going to be okay, Lysithea. You'll be okay."
He sounded like he really believed it.
"They'll be able to help at the hospital. You're going to have to power down, but you can do that when we get a little closer. Do you want me to try and pick you up, or do you think you can stand?"

“Yeah…I’m a senshi. The senshi of useless unicorns who can’t do s**t to help herself or the people she cares about. I’m a ******** waste of a senshi.” The girl hesitated a moment, and let her power fade away, leaving a very battered, nearly broken Cambria in her wake. “When I’m not a waste of a senshi, I’m just a waste of a girl. Who goes by the name of Cambria…you know that we could skip the theatrics and just call an ambulance if you don’t feel up to the task of carrying me to the hospital…because I’m really not sure that I can walk more than a step or two…”
She wanted to get up, she did…but she just didn’t have the energy…or the damns to give…she was all out of them.
“The person who did it…her name is Painite, and I suggest you stay the hell away from her at all times…she is literally the worst…thing I’ve ever met. She looks human, but she’s nothing more than a ******** crazy a** b***h monster who wants nothing more than to watch the world burn. Seriously.”

The name 'Painite' made Newgrange's blood run cold and he froze. He knew that name, if not from this timeline, then from another. His arm felt numb, tingling; it hurt.
But it was all in his head. He knew that. It didn't stop him from reaching over to grip the appendage, even if only for just a few seconds, before he swallowed. "I am familiar with her, in a sense," he said. Newgrange could hardly raise his voice above a whisper and found that his mouth and throat were uncomfortably dry. A cold sweat had rapidly descended upon him and he found himself fending off a very unwanted wave of anxiety.
If she had been here before, she could be back.
And he wasn't in any position to fight a crazy a** b***h monster who wanted nothing more than to watch to world burn.
"I'll call an ambulance, but I don't think it's a good idea to stay here. I'll get you to a park bench, we can sit there while we wait, okay? It'll be all right, Cambria. Don't let…don't let Painite get to you. You're not a waste of anything. If I move you, it's going to hurt, but I don't think an ambulance is going to be able to find us out here. If we get a little closer to the sidewalk, the road…it should be easier."
He drew in a calming breath and tried to flash a reassuring smile. "If you can hook your other arm behind my neck I think I can at least get you there without shaking you up too much. Or I can just call the paramedics and sit here while they come?"
…Just don't let Painite come back. He hadn't met her, not in this life, but he knew her face. He knew her spear.
He knew what a monster she was.

Cambria nodded. “All right. I can try. Just…I really need to get to the hospital. So...thanks for your help, Newgrange…”
She looked up at him, and held up her good arm, ready to be lifted. “I’m ready if you’re ready…just don’t move too quickly, if you please…I don’t want to be found out here by her again. I really can’t deal with that, and I don’t think you’ll be able to do much…no offense. She’s a crazy b***h. A ******** crazy b***h…”
All she wanted was to get out of here…and honestly…this guy was her only hope…so…here she went, entrusting everything to him.

He didn't waste any time. He doubted he wanted to be found by Painite any more than she did. Very carefully he picked her up. "I hear you," he said only, and then uttered a quick apology, certain that he must have hurt her in the process. "…But you'll be okay."
…For tonight, at least. He'd make sure she got to the hospital and was left in the hands of people more capable than he was.
But he was going to have to figure out if he was going to come back out tonight.
On one hand…do some good.
On the other hand, Painite.
…He wasn't ready to face her.
Squire or not.
