User ImageHer mother had been on her again about deciding what to do with herself, and as usual it put Soja in a dark mood. Not that she really had any other kind of mood lately, but at the moment she was feeling especially tetchy.

She did not want to get married. Not right away, anyway, and not to any of the young reavers she knew. She was also too old to be apprenticed to a priestess or lawspeaker (or so her parents had told her), which meant that she could either live the rest of her life as a freeborn or become a reaver. Most reavers, in Soja's estimation, were stupid and the idea of spending all her time among them was not appealing. But being a freeborn, well. That was fine for her mother, but not for her. Soja wanted people to admire and appreciate her for the brilliant lioness she knew herself to be.

As she usually did when she was struck by a dark mood, Soja went to the borders of the stronghold to stare broodingly into the lands beyond.

I think these two were just supposed to annoy one another, right?

Samael was not the smartest lion to ever live, but nor was he a brute with only his strength to recommend him. Though many of the females in the pride probably would prefer a brute over the greasy attentions of the patchwork reaver. Shaking out his lemon-yellow mane he winced, the fresh wound in his flank was still bleeding after his battle. An upstart rogue had thought getting into the pride meant he could lazy around and be fed by servants, which had infuriated Samael. Who generally did lazy around and get fed by the thralls, but he also did his fair share of work too. He gave the rogue a good thrashing, but the lucky b*****d had gotten a couple of hits in of his own as well. Now his side ached powerfully and blood mattered his fur.

Huffing in annoyance he rounded a small knoll and drew up short. There was a female up ahead. And one that he vaguely recognised… Grinning to himself he sauntered along the path, arriving at her side and sitting uninvited. “A good day to die.” He offered, letting his gaze flick over her very appealing figure.

Soja's eyes slid in the direction of the dark lion who had sidled up to her. The look she gave him was pure disdain, at least for the brief moment when she looked at him at all. She didn't want to encourage him to continue speaking to her, and she hoped that if she kept her gaze fixedly pointed away from him, he might get the hint.

It was probably a stupid thing to hope for, she thought with a small sigh. Reavers - and this lion was obviously a reaver - were terrible at interpreting things like not talking to them as a sign that someone didn't want to talk to them. At least, none of her brothers seemed capable of grasping the concept, and she'd never been able to get another reaver to get it either.

After more than a minute she slid her eyes toward him once more, disappointed but unsurprised to see that he was still there. She sighed again and finally answered him with an icy, "Indeed."

Sam grinned as she basically ignored him. Playing hard to get was she? He could go along with that. Of course it never entered his mind that a lady would not want to speak to him. He was handsome, very much so, and a good reaver. He was a prize catch for any female. Ok so he wasn't a Captain, but that was only because he didn't wish to be. If he had desired to make Captain, he would have ages ago.

He watched her for a while longer before tilting his head. "You look upset. What’s wrong?" He asked, genuinely interested. He may be a complete douche on occasion, but he could tell this lovely lass was a special girl. Not only was she stunningly pretty, but she had that look. He would bet she was the Warlord's daughter, or the daughter of a powerful Captain. Such a lady deserved to be looked after. And Samael, reaver extraordinaire was the perfect lion to do so.

He wanted to know why she looked upset? What was wrong? Soja sneered.

"Actually I'm not upset so much as I am frustrated," she said with a sudden pleasantness that ought to have been a clear warning sign to back off as quickly as possible. "You see, there's this lion who's been bothering me and won't take the hint that I want absolutely nothing to do with him."

Him. She was talking about him. Although the odds were good, she realized, that he wouldn't see it that way, and that she was wasting her time with this game. She should just get up and leave. The only reason she stayed was that she didn't really have anywhere better to be. Sometimes being a freeborn and having no responsibilities could be really boring.

Realisation dawned. Well, so she was one of those. Just like that slippery priestess Ember. He knew she desired him but she simply couldn’t bring herself to admit it. However, that wasn’t what he focused on this time. Yes she was now talking about him, but he had only just got here.

Arching a brow he sat up, turning to stare openly at her, squinting slightly and turning his head this way and that. He refused to speak, but simply kept his gaze fixed on her, slowly leaning in closer, eyes narrowing, an assessing look on his face. Just before she snapped and maybe swotted him in the face he finally spoke. “Nope. Not buying it. You looked like you had been sucking on an unripe fruit when I got here. So I at least am not to blame for the look on your face.”

Sucking on an unripe fruit? She had looked inebriated? No, wait. The other kind of unripe. The opposite kind of unripe. She supposed those would be sour and bitter. Well, if she looked sour and bitter it was because she had good reason to be!

"Is this an example of how you impress people? You insult them?" She almost went on to point out that he knew nothing about her, or what kind of difficulties she had to face, but she stopped herself when she remembered that he had, in fact, asked about those things, and she had answered snippily.

"What's your name, anyway?"

He watched as she went through a whole host of emotions, anger, disgust, annoyance, to name a few. He seemed to have a talent for shutting people up, he had noticed, and he grinned as she stared at him, evidently uncertain of how to respond. When she finally did, he laughed, an outright laugh that should have been insulting, but weirdly wasn't.

"I got you to talk, didn't I?" He replied, grinning at her with a knowing and pleased expression. Dark eyes dancing he regarded her for a long moment, before finally offering the information she sought. "I'm Samael." He waited another moment before adding. "And you are Soja." Head tilting he didn’t need to wait to see if he was right, her name had finally swum up through his consciousness while they talked. "Your sister is... known to me." he added, nose wrinkling slightly. She was in his old band now, under captain Lucivar. He still hadn’t worked out precisely how he felt about that...

She narrowed her eyes at his laughter, but it didn't bother her as much as it might have done coming from someone else. For one thing, she didn't care what this annoying stranger thought of her. For another, she was positive everything he did was either rude, annoying, or both, and if she was going to get worked up over it, she'd be in a state until the stormlords came down to hunt.

She didn't want to think about how he knew Svana. Probably it was Svana. Her sister seemed to well on her way to knowing the entire pride, in her quest for martial glory. The fact that this lion...Samael...said her knew her made no difference. She had made up her own mind about him.

"Samael..." She spoke the name slowly as if she was tasting it, and for a moment it seemed like she liked the sound of it. Then she continued: "You are rude and obnoxious and I am done speaking with you now. Don't die in bed."

Tanakako
Gods she's such a b***h. I'm sorry.

His grin remaining, broad and unashamed as she stared at him, her expression still sharp and irritated, but did he detect a softening in her fierce eyes? Ever her caustic dismissal didn't seem to upset him, his grin even wider as he popped up, laughter spelling free again. "As the lady requests... " He responded, giving her a wink before turning, stepping away from her before pausing. "And you Soja. Don't brood so much, you are far too pretty to scowl all the time like that,"

With a flick of his tail he jumped down from the perch she had picked and sauntered off, his voice being the last part of him to linger as he started humming, some jaunty song of victorious battle and death.

Princess_Feylin
Haha, No, she is awesome. I've always enjoyed Soja's acidic tongue.
