Nat and Kinni were usually together most days, and today was no different. The sun was disgustingly hot (at least for the heat-intolerant stallion), so the two had taken refuge under a wide cluster of elephant ear trees. While Nat was relaxing in the shade on the ground, his chicken friend was roosting in a low-hanging branch.

"You're lucky you have wings," Nat grumbled, eyes closed. He always had it in his head that it must be cooler in a tree than at the base of one, an idea that Kinni frequently enjoyed feeding.

"And you're lucky you don't 'cause it'd just give you something else to complain about," the rooster said, indicating the stallion's muddled unicorn blood. His comment earned an angry snort, and the avian clicked his beak in amusement. But he had annoyed his friend more than he realized, and Nat was left glaring and digging a hoof into the ground.

His mood was uncharacteristically bad at that moment, perhaps from the temperature, but he firmly blamed his short, fat "pal". WHAT A GREAT FRIEND. He seriously needed some herbs...or a distraction. If he had to deal with his "friend" for much longer, he might explode.

It was a pleasant enough day. Not too hot, and not too cold. At least, not to the dark pelted mare. But then again, very little was too much or too little of something for the genial mare. Though she knew that was not the case for others. Such as those who would think her kalona at first glance, and judge her because of that... One of the few things that did, in fact, bother the normally even-tempered mare.

She tossed her head, those were no fit thoughts for lovely day. And her first real excursion out and about since the snows had started to melt. She would not be gloomy, and she would not dwell on the things she could not change about the past but hoped to be able to address in the future.

She meandered this way and that, not really paying much attention to her surrounds until she noted plant life that was unfamiliar to her. How exciting! The mare wiggled a bit with an almost foal-like glee and curiosity at the thought of exploring something new, and exciting... And much like a foal, she bounced up and down on her hooves as she pranced this way and that. Trying to see exactly what these trees and the plant life were.

Then she heard it. Voices. There were others nearby. And just like that, her interest in the plant life waned. After all, meeting others and making friends was more interesting.

'Hel-lo. Is anybody out there?' She took a few steps in the direction she heard the voices from.

Even from his height on a branch Kinni could tell that his hooved friend was silently fuming. He guessed Nat was overly sensitive from the temperature, either that or lack of herbs, maybe even a lack of a stranger to converse with. But was that Kinni's fault?

"It's because of the heat," the rooster clucked, closing his eyes in the shade. When he received no response he shifted his wings and glared down. The silent treatment? How mature...

Nat, although definitely giving his friend the silent treatment, was occupied by the sound of footsteps and then a fair voice. Before he could stand up to investigate, someone had come into view. His ears flipped back, then forwards again, a sort of physical representation of what went through his mind the moment he saw her. She looked like a Kalona...but she sounded disturbingly friendly...? Someone with a cute sing-song voice like that couldn't have been mean. Unless she was crazy...which was a possibility. But since Nat liked to look on the bright side (and he was desperate for someone to converse with, especially if they were a mare), he flashed her a smile.

"Yeah, over here," he said openly. A breeze rolled its way through the surrounding cluster of trees and grasses, and through Nat's hair, and instead of relishing the temperature shift, all he could wonder was if it had made him look cool. He liked to think he wasn't the type to try hard, but looking good in front of a mare was definitely something he cared about. He wanted to invite her to hang out for a while, but he decided it might be smarter to see her reaction to him first. First impressions were one thing, but he was still wondering if she'd flip a switch and decide to play some fun games with those horns of hers...

...Wait, he was doing what he hated to have others do to him...dammit.

"You can come under the shade if you want, there's plenty of room," he drawled, deciding to hell with it.

As soon as she had spoken out, Arcana realised it might not have been the smartest of ideas...There could be skinwalkers out there. Or even other kalona-blooded. Mean kalona. She shuddered. So not the smartest thing she had ever done. But perhaps, perhaps it wouldn't be as bad as she anticipated. She could also meet a kindly flutter. Or angeni, she had always wanted to meet an angeni.

But it wasn't to be. Not that the being she saw was in anyway a disappointment or whatever. Nobody could ever be a disappointment, not really. Well with the previously mentioned bad things excepted. And she wasn't one to judge. Never would she intentionally judge anyone, it had happened to her far too often for her to want to inflict the same on anyone else.

She saw him, and it was definitely male from the sound of his voice. A unicorn. Dark pelted with vibrant swirls of color. Not her typical type of aquaintence, no that she really had any type, per say. She was still hesitant to simply go over. She had had enough experience with those who seemed friendly only to turn around and turn on her... But it had been long enough since she had any friendly company, she was willing to take the risk.

She walked cautiously over towards the particular patch of shade. Looking this way and that, noticing what she thought were eyes looking down from a branch just slightly overhead. But when she looked again, they seemed to disappear. Now wasn't that odd.

'Hi. I'm Arcana. Who're you?'

Kinni noted the mare in silence, idly wondering if he could have some fun at her expense. His stallion friend would've normally jumped at the chance to lend a hoof in a prank, but since Kinni was being ignored, he decided to ignore his bud right back. When the mare approached, he hid out of view in order to observe her more secretly. Her confused reaction gave him an idea...

Nat, on the other hand, was thinking of completely unrelated matters.

This Kalona-looking mare...

Was super nice...?

Literally shaking himself from his bewilderment, Nat was all friendliness and grins as he replied, "I'm Nátʼoh. Friends call me Nat, so I guess you will too." He took a split second more to observe her a little more closely now that he felt she wasn't a threat. She was actually seriously pretty, scary tail and all. Weird...but still, even though she gave off a good vibe, did that really mean she wasn't thinking of doing something like...like...hell, he didn't really know, but something bad at least. Well, whatever. He'd throw caution to the wind and continue to be friendly. He had no reason not to be at the moment. He'd already made that decision when he called out to her the first time.

"There are a lot of trees around, which means way too much shade for one guy to sit in by himself," he said, tossing his head beside him once again. "C'mon, I don't bite," he said, momentarily wondering if that was the best thing to say in the presence of someone with Kalona blood, but he kept on going and added, "tell me your story."

Kinni peered slowly through the branches and clicked his beak.

Arcana noticed the brief moment of confusion, and the accompanying shake, once the stallion decided to accept that she wasn't the evil kalona her appearance made her out to be. She would have sighed, and in other circumstances might have walked away. Disappointed and somewhat dejected. But not today. Today she would let it roll over her in the interest of possibly making a new friend... Or at least showing one more soquili that one shouldn't judge other based on appearance alone.

She still felt the eyes on her, even if she couldn't see where they were. So she took a few hesitant steps forward. It could be that she was simply paranoid, but still. The feeling of being watched from the shadows was creepy, and wouldn't leave her alone. But if there was someone else nearby, wouldn't they identify themselves, or at the least, wouldn't the stallion know and at least mention it? The thought wasn't exactly the most reassuring, so she resolved to be cautious until given a reason to act one way or the other.

'Nat'oh.' She tossed her head slightly, her tendril-ed tail dancing as though with a mind of it's own. 'A bit presumptuous to assume one is friend when first met, don't you think?'

Not that she wasn't friendly, or even hoping that he might be someone she could call friend, it just seemed a little premature to her. 'Though if we were friends, I might say you could call me 'Cana.'

And as he had metioned, yeah, there were a lot of trees around, and it might perhaps be pleasant to at least share a little bit of shade for a short time. But with all the trees, there still could be someone else nearby...

'I don't mean to sound rude or paranoid or whatever, but is there perhaps someone else nearby? I mean, I thought I could feel some eyes on me. Not that I'm trying to be self-absorbed or anything but..'

Then she heard a click. Not a sound she could place with any particular bird or beast.. though perhaps it was something scary or … When she was uncomfortable or nervous, she had the bad habit of rambling, and her thoughts would jumble much like her words, causing her to seem kind of ditzy, though she really wasn't . Even if she was doing a very fine impression of a ditz right this moment. She really hoped she wasn't coming off too terribly stupid or making a poor impression on the stallion, Nat.

Gathering her thoughts and nerves, she paused to take a breath. ' My story? A bit of a heavy topic. Not necessarily suitable for such a new aqauintance is it not? Or perhaps you could tell me your story first...'

"Presumptuous? Me?! Pffffffffffffffffff..." Nat spat nonchalantly. Of course, 'Cana had been right target. But Nat was both too foggy-headed and smooth-playing to admit that.

Still, her freaky tail caught his eye now and then, but he was doing his darndest not to make it obvious. His own tail flipped now and then almost like it had a mind of its own and was playing copy-cat. Nat was slightly too preoccupied with the pretty face in front of him to figure out if he was copying the mare's tail every time it moved or if it was just a coincidence.

"I'm the kinda guy who thinks everyone's a pal right from the start. It's kind of my philosophy, you get me?" he explained sleepily. At the sight of her seeming a little...well, off her stuff, Nat glanced around the area as if spot-checking for immediate danger, although he didn't budge an inch from his resting spot. "Nah, I don't see anything. Trust me, I'd know. I'm really in tune with danger and stuff..." Of course, he failed to remember his feathered buddy was also in the vicinity.

"Well, damn, if it's a heavy topic, maybe we should change the subject," Nat offered, flashing a grin. Not that he minded deep, personal backstories. They passed the time--filled the boredom. Advice afterwards? Not so much.

"Not much to say about me, 'Cana," Nat began, "I just kinda wander around, do stuff, meet people, you know...all that good stuff." Damn, all those details sapped the energy right outta him. Talking about himself was crappy. It was way better when he had someone else blabbering on and on instead. But he had to save face. There was a pretty lady at stake.

Kinni made a low churring sound. It was creepy, and that was exactly what he had been going for. And Nat was so used to Kinni's random sounds that he didn't notice even marginally. In fact, judging by how his ears hadn't shifted at all, Kinni would've gone so far as to say it was like Nat literally hadn't heard him at all. He glared at the Kalona-cross from where he hid, eager to break up the little tête-à-tête in the most devious of ways. SOON...
