The walk back to the bar had been quick enough; Zack lead Cambria to the back room. There, he gestured for her to take a seat in front of the desk while he went behind it and fished around. It took him a moment to go through the cabinets, looking for the applications. After a moment of riffling, his eyes lit up and he pulled up a familiar paper.
"Ah, here we are," he said, taking a seat in the chair. He scooted it closer to the desk and rested his elbows atop it. "Now, let's see. Cambria Dempsey," he lowered the paper to look her in the eyes, as if to confirm this was her name, before lifting it again. He continued reading the application, murmuring a few things under his breath as he read them—a few highlights of her accomplishments and history as recorded in the application.
The process ultimately took far longer than it needed to, but he seemed to enjoy dragging it out.
Finally, after an exhaustive stretch of seconds that all seemed to blend together in one long mess, he lay the paper atop the desk.
Straight faced, and entirely serious, he announced, "You're hired."

Cambria blinked. “Eh?” She stared blankly at Zack, confusion in every line of her face. What was he even talking about? “But…hold on a moment. You said that you weren’t the boss here…if you could ******** hire me, then why didn’t you hire me last time?”
She felt herself growing a little more angry than confused and finally gave a disgruntled sigh.
“I hope you know, that under no circumstances am I flashing you my boobs now. I think you’re kind of a jerk…why didn’t you give me the job last time? Oh Zack, you really owe me some drinks right now, I could just hit you, you know. What a jerk.”
A handsome jerk. A jerk that was giving her a job now….but still.
Something he said earlier made her pause. “So…if you’re the boss here…are you married? You said he boss had commitment issues with his wife? You can’t be married…not if you’re such a crazy flirt with me.

Zack just laughed and shook his head. "No, I'm not the boss. Not sure I'd want to be the boss of this joint even if the opportunity arose. I'm just the bartender--and I'll keep it that way, thank you very much. Flexible hours, good pay. No, you'll meet the boss probably in about two weeks or so, whenever he gets back from his vacation. But he wanted to hire someone else, he just never wants to do the work. So, Ev--that's our chef--needs some help, because mostly we just shrug off what we don't want to do on him because he does it, and we'll probably rake in more customers if there's a pretty girl around. And--you are very pretty. And it's a shame you won't flash me now, but we'll see what sort of mood you're in after those drinks, eh?"
He winked, and filed away her application.
This was pretty much a win-win; maybe he wasn't thinking with the head he should have been using, but either way there was going to be a hand helping out around the place and he was going to enjoy her.
"So, we'll figure out what exactly your duties around this place are gonna be later," he shrugged; the finer details didn't matter much. "But we'll save that discussion until after you're on the clock. All I'm going to need to know is your availability so we can get things started. Oh--and what you want for dinner, tonight."

“And just how often does your boss go on vacation…? Wasn’t he on vacation a few weeks ago…or however the hell long it was that I put in the in application in the first place? Does he ever bother to bring his a** to work?”
Cambria crossed her arms over her chest and huffed, looking away. “Whatever. I have the job, right? What’s the starting pay, and when do I start…and do I get tips? How does that work? Do we split a pot at the end of the night or is it a take what you get sort of deal? Do I at least sign a contract, Zack? This better not be some half assed trick.”
She was wary, and with good reason. This guy was such a…a tool. For lack of a better word. And what if he was just tricking her or something. He was a jerk, and she was so stupid to keep believing him but…
But she wanted a job. And dinner. “Pizza. Good pizza. Like, television worthy pizza.”

"Oh my goddddd, you are killing me," he griped, though seemed to at least be a tad bit playful--if not just overdramatic.
"Nine an hour, you keep twenty five percent of your tips to yourself, seventy five percent is pooled. You get a three month review--or, at least, I did, but I was also old enough to serve alcohol when I started. I'll get the paperwork and s**t to sign ready for tonight, and--what, you want to come over to my place, I'll come over to yours, something? I'll bring the pizza, of course."
Evan would cook, of course, but that was a trivial little detail that Cambria didn't need to know about. She'd learn the ins-and-outs of getting good food from the bar's chef in due time; right now, all he cared about was making sure he gave her a damn good reason to want him around, and while his smile should have been enough, he figured there was no harm in going all out.
"We'll gossip about the boss later. Feels kinda seedy to do it in is office."

Cambria shrugged. “All right. I’ll come over to your place then…how about in an hour or so…maybe two. I’ll be over at six, how about that?” That would give her so much time to get ready. Like, legit. What if he wanted her to stay over for the night and…
She hoped her face wasn’t getting red, because…that would kind of suck.
“The pay sounds fine, and the review, I’ll ace it, not to worry…and yeah. We can gossip about your boss over dinner…just in case he has tape recorders all over his office…listening to every word we say. Dun dun DUN!”
The girl held out a hand. “Thank you for the job, Zack. Now give me your address and make sure it’s spanking good pizza, okay? And I’ll see you at six. Or seven. Maybe seven. Who knows…I don’t, that’s for sure. IF we make it later though, you can get dessert for us too. And we can watch a movie. That would be cool.”
So…Address…and she could go and see him later and…and total date night. How fun! He made her smile...and sure, he wasn't her dreamboat guy...but...her dreamboat guy was unattainable...so it was a moot point...
Besides, she hadn't seen Merlinite in ages...so the point was really moot.

A grin lit up Zack's face; he took Cambria's hand and gave it a firm shake before he pulled a scrap of paper and scrawled both his address and his personal phone number.
"Sounds cool. I'll have the pizza ready by seven," he promised with a wink. "You bring the movie, and we're all set. See you then."
...Seven should give him enough time to clean and make sure he had a damn fine pizza.
But mostly clean.
