The trip across Aisko, to the port, took longer than they had anticipated. The trio had had to take shelter, their father unwilling to risk any of their lives. After a few days of traveling, Asi’wi found himself settling down in the shared cabin of the boat that would take his brother, father and him to Ayr. The trip across the ocean seemed as if it took just as long as the trip over Aisko, maybe longer. When they finally landed, Asi’s eyes widened as they stepped above deck and he was greeted with a very foreign land.
Asi tried his best to take in everything about him as he followed along behind his father and brother, both of which had been to the windy continent before — his father many, many times. Not only was this his first time on Ayr, it was his first time off of Aisko. His mother had been reluctant to let him go, arguing with his father that he was too young for such a trip. It was always the same argument, it seemed. In the end, his father had won out, remind her that Tylik had not been much older, than Asi was now, when he had first traveled off of Aisko.
Everything seemed a blur as they traveled through the small port town and finally stopped at a hostel. Once they had a room rented, they began to unpack. Tylik spoke up first, already eager to escape out into the small town and beyond. “I’m sixteen,” he said as he followed his father over to the balcony looking out over the small town. “Asi’s been hunting with us plenty of times and he’s good with his magic.” He huffed at their father’s narrowed eyes. “We’ll be careful. I promise.”
Dasan grunted, eyes darting to his youngest son. “You’ll listen to your brother and stay out of trouble?” Asi nodded a quick agreement, just as eager to explore as his brother. Dasan’s attention flicked between the two boys and he let out a frustrated sigh. “Fine, fine. But!” He started before Tylik even had his hand on the door knob. “Be careful you two. Please. And here,” Dasan said as he handed a coinpurse over to Tylik. “Money to take the ferry inald. Do not stray past of the fields. Do you hear me?” Tylik grinned at Asi, both turning towards their father and chiming in, at the same time, on their agreement and then turned and shot out of their room, before Dasan could say anything else.
It didn’t take them long to find someone willing to take them inland, and wait for them to return — since it was supposed to be a short exploration. By the time they made it back on land, Asi was eager and bounded off out into the field. It seemed to go on forever, dotted by colourful flowers he’d never seen outside of a book. Tylik laughed as he paid the first half of their fair and joined Asi. “Amazing, isn’t it?”
“It’s so different,” Asi said as he stopped to stare at a lavender grouping of lavender colored flowers. “So much color.” He grinned as he looked back up to Tylik. Ayr was a mystery waiting for Asi to discover, as far as he was concerned. He only wished they had more time to spend here and that they could go farther than this very field. Asi opened his mouth, about to say as much, when a rustling and a small, quiet growl sounded off in the distance. His focus flicked over to the sound, eyes narrowing as he saw some rather tall grass move.
As Asi began to move, Tylik spoke up, “Asi, what are you doi…” Tylik’s words were cut off as a ysali dragon popped up from the grass and Asi stumbled backwards. "Asi!" Tylik yelled as he took off running towards his brother. He barely had time to think before he tugged his brother up and away from the vines that shot out and dug into the spot where Asi had just been. "C'mon, we have to go!"
Asi jerked out of Tylik's grip and shook his head. "Let's fight it. It's just a ysali." Already, Asi was moving away from Tylik and pulling at his magic. He aimed and shoved, forming an icicle that he sent flying towards the ysali dragon. With a simple flick of the vines, from before, the icicle's path was diverted and it fell into the grass. Asi frowned and muttered as he stepped back, out of the reach of the growling dragon's vines. Just as the vines touched ground, again, Asi stomped, sending a large trail of ice over the ground and freezing the vines in place. He watched, for a moment, as the ice traveled up the plants but his gaze flicked back to the dragon when it growled angrily and shot after him.
Tylik cursed and rolled his eyes at his brother. “You’re always getting into trouble, Asi!” He snapped his fingers and flames surrounded his fist as he stepped between his brother and the dragon. He reeled back and as the dragon closed in, he punched, pushing with his magic and surrounding the dragon in flames as he made contact. The dragon roared in pain, lurching backwards and was quickly engulfed and turning to dust before Asi could even blink.
As Tylik turned to face his brother, and tell him to be more careful, two more dragons decided to join in on the ‘fun’. One instantly went for Tylik’s turned back, pouncing on him and sending him flying. Tylik rolled, avoiding landing on Asi but taking the brunt of the attack from the dragon. “No, no, no…” Asi muttered as the pair rolled and the dragon clawed at Tylik. Just as he was about to move in to help, the other dragon lunged for him. Without thinking, Asi’s magic shot out, forming a rather large ice spike which embedded into the dragon’s chest. It dissipated just as Tylik shoved the third dragon off of him with a blast of flames.
The ysali roared and stumbled back away from them and, deciding it wanted to live for the day, turned tail and hobbled off. Tylik, despite being scraped and bruised up, grinned at Asi. “Well, at least it wasn’t boring. We better get back to dad, hm? He’ll be worrying and I need to take care of these cuts.”
