The Mystifying Jungle. That was what the guild had called it. It... fit, Katherine thought to herself, as she made her way down the path. Thick trees seemed to weave together and part at random, leaving her unable to see little more than a few meters off the path. She was fortunate that there was a path at all among the rough, massive foliage and that the guild had been willing to supply a simple set of instructions for her to follow. Katherine hopped up onto an especially thick root and squeezed herself through a gap between two tree trunks. With a heavy push from both her hands, the little Kirlia came tumbling out the other end.

She didn't like this. She felt vulnerable, especially with her behind facing the canopy above her. She felt alone. She had grown used to feeling alone and vulnerable thanks to her bright colours but that didn't mean she liked the feeling. She didn't have any choice to accept it. She needed to join the guild. That thought was the only thing that forced her to press on. Success carried the promise of hope, the promise of the future she was after. She didn't know what she would do without that. So she got back up to her feet, dusted herself off and continued her march. The ribbon had been put where it was for a reason. She had been given directions so that she wouldn't get lost. This, all of this, was just to prove that she was brave enough to handle it.

And she would handle it.

She would handle it because she refused to accept the alternative.

Not that she had much of a choice at this point. She had been walking through the forest for a good half an hour and it would take her at least as long to get back. The list of directions grew shorter and shorter. She took a hard right at a particularly gnarled and unusual looking tree and then simply followed the path. All the instructions said was that she would reach a “wall” and then she needed to look around. So she kept walking until she found it.

The wall was, predictably, made of some very tall trees. Katherine took a deep breath and started to look around her. And look, and look. And look. But she couldn't find it, there was little in the way of colour throughout the forest aside from the dull tones of the trees and the lush greens. She was reminded again of how much she stuck out. She had been staying in one place too long. She was being watched by now and she could only hope that whoever it was was friendly.

A sudden rustling sent her gaze skyward. A branch far above her was gently swaying up and down. She couldn't see what caused it but that didn't matter because she saw a splotch of purple against one of the branches. It was far, far above her, perhaps thirty or forty feet on the lowest branch of the tree. It was deep and rich in colour. It was exactly what she needed...

...And she couldn't get it. It was too high. There was no way for her to get up there unless she tried to, well, climb. So she stepped up to the tree, carefully found a spot for her foot and pushed up. Her hands shifted from spot to spot until she found a good grip and then her other foot followed. It hurt. The bark bit into her hands and feet as the weight of her body pressed down on her limbs. She would have bruises by the time she made her way to the top but she didn't care. She would care later.

She wouldn't make it to the top. She would only make it about ten feet, about a quarter of the way, before she would come crashing down. Pain had lanced through her back as blood was drawn by talon and beak. She had used one hand to strike back but down, down, down she came. She ended up on the ground with the Spearow that was after her coming down just as fast as she had.

Katherine scrambled to her feet, pulled back her arm and met the Spearow with a single blow and an angry shout. The air rippled around her fist as she struck forward. The backblast covered her fist in a mixture of blood and viscera as the Spearow's body went limp and sailed off into a tree. She shuddered as she tried her best to shake her hand clean and to wipe the blood off on the ground. She hated the feeling of blood.

She hated fighting too but that wouldn't stop her. At least it wasn't something strong enough to be a threat.

Though it did give her an idea. She didn't have to climb this the normal way. All she had to do was reach up with a little more than her hand.

The bark crunched under her hands and feet with every step. Deep marks were left in the tree as she simply crushed it to give herself something to grip. It was a little slow but it was easy and it was safer. It only took her a few minutes to ascend the tree and with a little bit of angling she managed to slip her leg over the proper branch and slide down it a little bit.

The Spearow hadn't been alone. Its friend dropped down out of the canopy and with a loud cry it began clawing, flapping and pecking away at her face. She cried back angrily in response and began flailing wildly in an attempt to strike back. Branches began to snap and fall. She finally got one solid strike in on the Spearow, sending it flying off. She tried, carelessly, to quickly rub the blood off of her hands and onto the branch she was on.

Crack.

The branch underneath her gave way a moment later and down, down she went. She scrambled, clawing wildly at the only thing nearby. Another crack, this one much more sickening as it erupted from her own arm as she managed to grab hold of one of the holes she had made in the tree. A cry of pain was followed by struggling and then release as Katherine came crashing down the rest of the way.

Once she landed she hastily slipped the ribbon off the end of the branch and hurriedly, if uneasily, made her way out of the jungle. She wouldn't afford herself the time to wait. Not if there was more friends.

"You've had a bit of an adventure, haven't you my dear?" There was no malice or jest in his tone, just a dull observation with a tinge of concern.
A single ribbon extended out to take the bow from her, his paws glossing over the purple fabric to flip it around and tug at it lightly to find the single red thread sewn into the flaps of its knot. His calm expression broke into a bright smile and he returned the bow along with a single slip of paper with a curt nod.
"Congratulations! This is evidence of your accomplishment and I now present you the partner voucher. With this you can obtain your partner. You are now an official Rank one member of the Guild of Eclipse!"
Veilmys raised his ribbons to his face thoughtfully before gently reaching them out to turn the Kirlia in the direction of the infirmary.
"Do have yourself looked over first before celebrating, dear."

An "adventure" was a bad summary.

But regardless she took the voucher carefully and nodded. It was a relief to have it in her hands. She hadn't expected anything else, but... it was still a relief. It meant she was free of that trial, that risk; she just had to continue moving forward now that she had taken the all-important first step.

And that step would have to wait until after she had had some time to heal. Something--something important--had torn inside of her arm. It would heal readily enough, such was the strength of a Pokemon, but the nasty bruise that extended part way down her arm from her shoulder was enough of a pain that she wasn't eager to continue. "I will, thank you."

But she did hope she wouldn't have to climb any trees again for a while.

Lin's small form darted quickly through the tangled mass of growth that collectively was called the Mystifying Jungle. If the Meinfoo was one to speak to herself openly, and she wasn't, she would be exclaiming how much she loved this place! There was so much life here that she could see almost as well as if she weren't physically blind. The thick, towering trees released a pleasingly rich gold aura up to the very top of their canopies. The vines strung around these massive plants held an equally vibrant hue of orange, and the little, growing plants on the ground were sprouting up with newly released yellow auras that promised the seedlings a long and healthy life if they weren't trampled on. Which was part of the reason why the nimble Meinfoo was using the thick roots of the trees that were partly above ground to travel. It would be a shame to literally stomp out the newborn plant's lives.

Stopping for a moment on a particularly large root, Lin sniffed the air and blinked a couple times to adjust her senses. Though most of the aura around here consisted of differing shades of yellows, Lin was looking for the tell tale signs of blue aura that emanated from every sentient being. She needed a bit of help looking for the ribbon she had been informed she was to find. After all, it was an inanimate object that had probably been made without much thought and thus held no aura for her to locate it by. It was one of the few downfalls Lin was willing to recognize of her physical limitations. So she scanned the area around her for any signs of someone willing to help her out a bit.

Apparently Lin had accumulated a bit of luck on her trip to the jungle, as she was rewarded with the sight of a beautifully glowing baby blue aura just beyond a few more trees to her right. Delighted to have found someone at last, the furry Pokémon quickly yet quietly made her way towards the other being. Not wanting to startle the fellow, though, Lin made sure to land a little harder on a root where she was sure the other Pokémon could see her.

A startled gasp reached her ears that gave cause for a frown to form on Lin's face. Apparently she had not taken enough precaution against scaring the being. "I am sorry. I did not mean to frighten you." She stated gently as she remained where she was once she noticed the little Pokémon on the ground was shivering. Now that she was closer she could clearly see tendrils of black fear stretching out from the bird like silhouette that the aura outlined for her. Apparently something had scared the little thing before she had come along. To add on top of the fear, the Pokémon was holding what looked to be a wing in an awkward, unnatural position as it attempted to flutter away. Concerned that the bird was hurt and was going to make things worse, Lin decided to step in and intervene.

"Hey, now. None of that." She said in a slightly stern voice as she stepped towards the bird. it made a nervous squawk when it realized it couldn't get away from her and lifted its good wing to cover its face, still trembling terribly. A pang of compassion hit the Meinfoo's heart that moved her to carefully reach out and touch the creature. It flinched under her tender touch, but she didn't let that stop her from sending a wave of calming energy into the being. The Pokémon relaxed under her, shifting oddly and pulling back its wing to peek at her after a few moments. The black aura had receded but was still there.

"Y-you're no-not gonn' hur-hurt m-me?" The shaky and painfully young voice chirped out with tremors wracking it. Lin shook her head and allowed a smile to grace her lips.

"Never, darling. Did you have an accident?" Lin asked the question calmly, but the shake of the bird's small head confirmed that what damage had been done to this poor creature had been purposeful, "That is okay, I will watch over you. Can you hold still for just a moment while I tend to your wing?" The little bird nodded once and Lin smiled again, moving her hands over to the injured wing. She let her paws hover over the broken appendage instead of touching it because she knew it had to be painful. She breathed in deeply and furrowed her brow as she concentrated hard on the thin, porous bones of the lightweight Pokémon. She soon released a soft pulse of psychic energy into the wound, and her patient let out a gasp of delighted shock. It took a few more pulses of energy, but at last the bone was in place and healed properly.

"Th-thanks! How did you do that?" The now excited little voice peeped as it raised its wings and flapped the experimentally. Lin grinned and held back the urge to pant after using up so much spiritual energy. She was a bit disappointed that she had used so much for such a tiny bone, but was glad that she had been able to fix things in the end. She had even managed to replace that awful black aura with bright white joy. Children were so honest with their feelings.

"I have a special power that lets me help heal others." She stated in reply, watching with a measure of amusement as the bird looked over its wing in awe and then turned to her, "I am Lin. What is your name, little one?"

"Tadeus!" He answered earnestly. Lin appreciated that quality, and her kindly grin was drawn sideways into her most genuine smiled as she stood and pat her feathered friend on the head.

"Tadeus, would you like to help me search for a ribbon? I am in need of one that has been hidden around here, yet I can not seem to locate it." Lin questioned. When Tadeus just stood and cocked his head at her, she was prompted to say more, "What is it?"

"You mean like the one I'm wearing now?" Tadeus replied in confusion, and Lin had to process the words for a few moments before feeling her face heat up.

"Oh! I am sorry! I can not see as well as you, so I did not notice!" She apologized in embarrassment, hating when her lack of normal vision got it the way of everyday matters. Tadeus only laughed and shook his head.

"You're funny. And nice. You can have my bow! I found it in a tree anyways, so its okay." He said as he moved closer to the Meinfoo, "You can has it after you helps me to Mama's nest. I-I don't want to go alone." Lin let all of her self-consciousness abate upon hearing the words of the child. She let out another kind smile as she rubbed the bird's head affectionately.

"Of course, little one. Lead the way and I will protect you, I promise." Tadeus squawked in delight and fluttered across the ground to head to his home. Lin chuckled contentedly as she followed him, knowing it was more important to make sure to get this little one home safe and sound than to return in a rush with the ribbon in hand. That could wait for now. Besides, she would get there eventually. She may as well enjoy the journey until then.

"Welcome back~" Veilmys had watched the Mienfoo return. She had a sort of awkward way of moving about... what a strange young lady, he thought. Oh well, the guild was full of strange folk. Adding another one was hardly a problem if it had ever been. "The ribbon, if you would?"
Veilmys received the ribbon with his own and after putting the former on the floor quickly set to work. It was with a very usual satisfaction that he found the stray, odd-looking thread that ran through the back. It was the proof he needed and he nodded, thoroughly pleased that the Mienfoo had earnestly passed the test like so many before her.
"Congratulations! Please take these and make your way to the partner assignment office whenever you're ready. Your partner will be waiting for you." Veilmys's ribbon extended back outwards with both the ribbon that Lin had retrieved and the voucher she would need in order to find herself the partner that would help her. Hopefully he, or she, would be understanding of the Mienfoo's disability.

(tfw you're a literal a** and expect people to pay attention to u after seven months of inactivity. my excuse? shawners totally said i was too quick with my last starter mission.)

Michael Bellemont had a problem, and it was a large one. He wasn’t prone to panicking, so when placed into a situation like this one, it was bad.

Not to worry though, he wasn’t going to panic just quite yet. There was definitely still time to try and fix the situation, and fix it he would. This was just a simple retrieval mission, and he wanted to be an Explorer. He would live to see another day if he could just get his feet on the goddamned earth.

The wind whistled through his ears, and he gritted his teeth. This Honchkrow was getting irritating, and Michael was only capable of holding onto his leg for so much longer. Fortunately, the bird’s altitude seemed to be dropping due to the extra weight, so perhaps he would get out of this shortly. Other than that, he didn’t have any means of controlling the situation, so he’d just have to hang on (Michael gave an internal groan at the ill-timed pun) for the time being.

He had tried everything possible to steer the bird towards the earth, but the Dark-Type didn’t seem to be reacting at all. It was significantly bigger than him, however; and Dark-Type Pokemon generally didn’t react well to his psychic control.

So perhaps this hadn’t been the smartest of ideas. He had the occasional slip-up, it was just that this one might cost him his life. The Kirlia furrowed his brow, trying to judge the distance towards the ground. The Honchkrow wasn’t actually flying terribly high. Actually, it appeared to be flagging. The bird was carrying extra weight, and it didn’t generally take home prey as large as this, so if his calculations were correct then he could hold on for about another two minutes and be fine.

Of course, his calculations didn’t quite take into consideration that there was an extremely large tree coming up. The Kirlia was a bit too preoccupied to notice- seeing as how his arms were beginning to quiver. He wasn’t the strongest of Pokemon, especially physically. Even though it would be about two more minutes before he could let go, he probably wouldn’t be able to hold on that long. He was, to use a modern term, a skinny a** nerd.

Finally Michael Bellemont took notice of the trees approaching swiftly, and swore, very loudly.

“Hey, sir! Honchkrow! Pull the ever-loving Arceus down or I swear to god-”

Michael’s abrupt screaming did nothing but shock the already confused Dark-Type, who immediately cawed loudly and began erratically flapping its wings, doing the exact opposite of what Michael wanted it to do. As the bird began to caw, Michael let out a loud shriek, right before he let go of the bird. This, of course, was probably not the wisest of decisions.

Michael crashed through the treetops, scrabbling to find purchase on the various branches, before he managed to grab ahold of a vine- for all of two seconds. The sudden jerk was enough to dislocate his left arm, and with another screech the Kirlia fell the rest of the way down.

Truth be told, despite the unfortunate circumstances which had led to the start of his fall from the sky, the ending was lucky. For if Michael had not landed where he had, he most definitely would have broken his back. As it were, he landed on a spider-web, unnaturally strong.

As Michael’s consciousness began to slip away from him, he thought for a very brief moment that he would be in a world of hurt as soon as he woke up. Fortunately, he was out cold before he could quite finish this realization.

By the time the Psychic type awoke, the sun was beginning to set- and the jungle was cast in a red-orange glow, with the Kricketune playing their twangy song in the far distance. The sound was irritating enough to bring him out of his mental and physical stupor. Michael had always found the sound of the Kricketune alarmingly annoying.

For once, he was glad of it.

Two Spinarak were swiftly approaching- their spindly green bodies descending from another strand of spider’s silk. Michael’s heart rate instantly kicked up out of fear, and he began to struggle. His efforts were in vain- the spider web was woven to withstand the struggling of whatever Pokemon fell in. This thought didn’t help, as Michael realized that to them he was likely prey.

“Hey, w-we can talk this out! I’m just looking for a ribbon, please!” Michael’s voice was much higher-pitched than normal, though that was understandable given the current circumstances.

The two Spinarak instantly began to chitter to themselves, before they screeched simultaneously. Michael screeched as well.

However, the two bug Pokemon moved away, glancing at each other excitedly, and Michael sighed with relief. He hadn’t been expecting this outcome, but now that he had more time he might as well use it for escape. There was a chance that he could bounce himself up and down, even though he had heard that some Spinarak could grow huge and weave webs that could contain Rhyperior. These Spinarak were tiny though- they looked as if they were just hatchlings cooperating for the first kill. Don’t think like that, don’t think like that, don’t think like that. If he could just gain enough momentum and go at it for long enough, there had to be a way- Oh Arceus dammit.

An Ariados was descending from the same strands of web that the two bug types had. The two Spinarak were now chittering excitedly, and they appeared to be exceedingly happy. Judging on Michael’s (admittedly limited) knowledge of the spider Pokemon, this was likely their mother.

Oh Arceus, oh Arceus, those legs and that mouth looked so deadly. This was how he was going to die- in the jungle, where no Rescue Team would be after him for a day at the least. The guild would have no idea, and it was all that stinking Sylveon’s fault, sending him out here.

“Heeeeeeeealeeeeeeeeer…”

“What?”

“You are the heeeeeeeealeeeeeeeeer.”

He was the healer? He certainly knew the foundations of medical aid, and he had the glorious and innate gift of the Heal Pulse, so he supposed he qualified. He was no hospital worker- there was no chance that he could- Arcdammit. This was going to save his life, wasn’t it?

“Y-yeah! I’m the healer! What do you need healed?” His voice was giving out after all of the stress and screaming. If this didn’t go well, he was doomed.

Without any hesitation, the Ariados lashed out, and Michael only whimpered. However, the hit never impacted him. The Kirlia did drop another three feet (he was surprisingly close to the ground of the jungle, and he hadn’t realized it).

Michael hissed in pain, he had totally landed on his bad shoulder. There wasn’t much time to waste though, because the Ariados had descended more gracefully than him, and was now nuzzling him onto her back. “Hold on, tinyyyyyyyyyyyy heeeeeeeealeeeeeeeeer.” Michael instantly clung to the spider with his good arm, which was a scenario he hoped he would never have to deal with again.

The journey was thankfully short, but most of it involved the Ariados ferrying him up strands of webbing to a nest located in one of the taller trees, in which there was a swarm of Spinarak, huddled together, hissing softly in pain. Despite the general patheticness of the sight, Michael Bellemont couldn’t help but shiver in fear and anticipation. This was literally a sight out of his worst nightmares.

“Theeeeeeeeeeee pink ribbons said that you would help us for theeeeeeeee purple ribbon.” The Ariados gestured vaguely to a pristine ribbon on the wall, before glancing imploringly at Michael. “My babieeeeeeeeeeees have been struck with theeeeeeeeeee jungle virus and they are too young to survive. Pleeeeeeeeease, weeeeeeeeeee neeeeeeeeeed your help.”

Every instinct Michael had was telling him to turn tail and through himself out of that tree, but he couldn’t. The Ariados seemed truly scared for her hatchlings, and the whimpers from the pile of spiders were too faint and sickly for Michael to turn his back on their plight, spiders or not spiders.

With a heavy sigh, he said, “Fine. I can heal them, but it will also be necessary for you to find pecha berries- if I can return to the guild I will also be able to send them along.” Michael inhaled deeply, psychic energy gathering in him. His eyes flashed a soft shade of pink for the slightest of moments, and then a ring of pink light that very same shade emanated from him. It cast its glow over the pile of Spinarak before swiftly dispersing into the ray of light falling into the tree, for by this point the moon was beginning to light up the jungle through the canopy of leaves.

“Thank you, heeeeeeeealeeeeeeeeer… Pleeeeeeeeease send theeeeeeeee pecha berrieeeeeeeees… And take theeeeeeeeee ribbon, weeeeeeeeeeeeee have no neeeeeeeeeeeeeed for it in this nest.” The Ariados gently placed the ribbon into Michael’s hand, before scuttling over the fawn over the pile of Spinarak.

Michael let out a breath he hadn’t been fully aware he had been holding, and turned to look out of the nest.

Now he just had to find a way back to the Arcdamned guild.

Veilmys, by all accounts, looked a little sleepy. The yawn that escaped his mouth as he approached Michael was a deep one, as if he had woken up from a long nap of some sort. There was a silly jaunt in his step as he shook the sleep from his limbs. He came to a sudden halt not far away only to blink sharply as the sleep disappeared from his eyes. "Oh my."

Veilmys nudged Michael towards the infirmary with one of his ribbons while plucking the very important purple bow with his other ribbon. "Lets get you looked at, hm?" Another guiding push would come against Michael's back, this one just as careful as the last to avoid the obviously dislocated shoulder. With a bit of awkward grabbing and tugging to handle it while on the move, Veilmys would reveal a thick red thread that had been buried deep in the back of the purple cloth. "Excellent. You pass, you'll be free to get your partner after you've had that looked at."

Veilmys would, of course, see Michael off to the infirmary in person and receive the inevitable report of the Spinarak. "I'll make sure a rescue team is sent right away. Good work~"
