He was learning about the Knight faction, slowly and in pieces. Mont Blonc had been his first and they'd quickly found relevant interests in their planetary alignments. Saturn on the page's side and a moon of Saturn for Aegir. Of course, it wasn't enough - the page of Saturn hadn't really known much...which had been unfortunate and left Aegir wanting to find more of the faction's members in the hopes of learning more.

So he was out and about, trying to stay hidden from any members of the Negaverse while seeking out those with a power signature that was similar to the one he'd encountered with Mont Blonc. Certainly he'd be happy to fight if it came to that, but he would prefer this remain an 'information gathering mission' as it were.

Mistral... didn't really patrol. It wasn't her thing. She didn't like being outside and vulnerable. Even with Mendel at her side, faithful as ever, she just--it was too risky. Anyone and everyone could put her right back in the hospital, and when the only person on Earth she was on speaking terms with was Babylon, that wasn't a good place to be.

She sighed and clucked her tongue at Mendel. They had a long way to go before they could sleep, even if they were finally on the backloop. She longed for the Negaverse's ability to teleport. There was no way she could corrupt, though. The future Babylon had told her of was quite clear in that the power required to corrupt her would also kill her in moments. Maybe somehow... she'd once learned how to block a Negaverser's ability to teleport. Perhaps she could replicate the feat. Somehow. Someway.

So caught up in her ruminations, Mistral didn't even notice the senshi aura she was approaching. Once she caught sight of him, though, recognition--of what he was, if not of him personally--came instantly. "Sorry," she said, ever-wary. She remembered how her death had come at the hands of her fellows in Order. "We're just passing through. Unless you need something. That isn't my guts."

Who knew? She'd done reprehensible things in this lifetime, too.

It was unusual for him to actually 'bump into' another person while on patrol, but that's basically what happened. At least, in part. Aegir was technically hunting Knights but the woman could have avoided him if she'd been paying attention. But more than her manner, it was the way that she reacted to his being in her line of sight that set off his curiosity radar on high.

"Er..hi. Uh, why would I need your guts?" Generally one didn't say things like that to another person unless there was some sort of crazy history (or just story) behind it...and now Aegir really wanted to know. "I'm Aegir, by the way."

"A lot of people want my guts," she said, a little embarrassed by her grammatical flaw. "I'm the only person who needs them, as far as I know." She combed her bangs back out of her face, and sighed. "My name is Mistral. This is my dog. You can call him Dog."

Mendel really needed a secret identity, too. She'd get to work on that as soon as she could. "I made something with the intention to help the other Knights. It killed almost everyone I asked to help me finish it. I'm... not very popular." Future dreams didn't matter, but she couldn't forget Bifrost's note or Sarras's cold eyes. "For explicable reasons, I think."

She looked at him through her bangs, which had promptly fallen back into her face. "So you must be new to this, I suppose. I don't know how far knowledge of... what I did... has spread."

"Huh. Well, I don't know anything about you and I'm not one of those people." Aegir gave the pale-haired Knight what he hoped was a reassuring smile and tried to keep his body language as open and friendly as he could while still remaining wary, just in case she decided to go insane and try to maul him. "It's nice to meet you, Mistral. And you too, Dog."

The blond wasn't really going to ask her why so many wanted to use her guts for garters (so to speak) because that was her business and he didn't want to pry, but there she was, giving him the capsule version. It was horrifying enough without any of the 'gory' details and he blanched a bit, smile faltering as his brain tried to process the actuality of what her words really meant. 'I guess this is why people say the road to Hell is paved in good intentions...Jesus, no wonder she's so jumpy and weird about meeting people!' "That's...wow. I'm sorry. That must have been awful for you too."

"Oh, kind of? I was gone for a year and it seems like a lot happened during that time. Plus, I don't know many knights or anything, so it's not all that weird that I wouldn't know." Aegir made a quick mental note to ask Thraen about Mistral's Horrific Deed the next time he saw the Eternal of Gardens. It somehow seemed to him that if anyone would know, it would be Thraen.

"No, but seriously...are you okay after all that?"

Mendel wuffed out what might have been a greeting or might have been dismissal. He was not a talkative dog, but that was part of why Mistral loved him so much. It was easy to work while her dog was around. "It wasn't very fun, no," she said, which was an understatement. Everything was an understatement when it came to the disaster that her arrogance had caused. She'd thought her work was too important to wait for her to comb through everything, hadn't been willing to sacrifice a little of her own health, and people died. That was the part that stuck with her, the fear of her own pain that had spurred the whole thing on. Knowledge had its price, but she could've paid in a different coin.

"We're a rare breed," she said, wanly. True, she'd mostly met other knights, but she tended to seek those signatures out if she wanted company. Or, she had before, now she sort of. Didn't. It was easier to stay cloistered in the labyrinth, Mendel at her side, Babylon sometimes visiting her--easier. Better. "I'm fine. I wasn't harmed." She gestured to her service dog. "The injuries necessitating Dog predate that by about a year and a half."

She looked around for a bench or something, but eventually gave up and settled on the sidewalk, her back against a building and her feet out in front of her, the Mercury sigils on the toes glinting back at her. "Where did you go, when you left? Did you transform at all?... I hear that the Negaverse owns most everywhere else. This is the only combated space in the world." She paused. Mendel trotted over to Aegir and snuffled at the senshi's hands. "So they say. He's looking for treats, if he's bothering you, tell him no and he'll stop."

As much as he might have wanted to kneel and allow the dog to sniff an offered hand, Mistral has said he was a service dog, and Aegir knew better than to mess with one of those highly trained creatures. But he did actually direct a smile at her Dog specifically when he wuffed, then politely turned his attention back to the Mercury knight.

When she settled on the sidewalk, he joined her - it was rude otherwise - but kept a bit of distance, closer to a light post than the buildings, mostly because they were just meeting and she seemed...wary. Flighty even - not that he could blame her. "London and the surrounding areas. Not much sightseeing though." As for powering up...well, he'd done it and had learned better than to do it again. "Mmm...I did, once. And I got my a** handed to me. But...someone was in trouble, so what else could I do? After that I just...went out as normal me, if I went out. It was too scary."

"Sorry buddy, I don't have any treats this time." Mendel's attentions weren't a problem, Aegir just let the dog sniff and snuff at his gloved hands and gave him an apologetic smile. "Seems like a really good dog."

Mistral nodded. "I don't transform much," she said. "I'm not well, you see. Before I even became a knight, I wasn't well." She shrugged. "That's why Mendel is around. He's a good dog. Maybe too friendly, but I don't mind. He keeps the monsters away."

Mendel didn't seem particularly upset by the lack of treats. He wandered amiably over to Mistral's side and settled down, ears pricked forward attentively.

"It's brave of you to put yourself on the line for others that way," she said. "I enjoy surviving too much to do it myself. Even like this, I'm still weaker than most civilians."

Okay, he was kind of sorry the Dog left him alone - Mistral was curling herself into a ball of 'don't touch me don't look at me I'm invisible' against the wall - and he missed solid, physical interaction. Animals were good for that sort of thing, but he couldn't mess with her service dog, that would be rude. "Can't say I blame you...even an awesome dog like him can't keep all creeps at bay, right?"

Aegir fussed with one of his sleeves and took a quick glance around but then stopped - the dog would certainly let them know if something nasty was headed their way, plus...they'd feel it. Right? He could relax a bit. "Brave? I wouldn't say that...I was terrified." But he'd done it anyway; would continue to do it.

"Because of your condition." That he was not asking about, 'cause it wasn't his goddamned business.

"I'm fairly sure there's a cliche line about bravery not being the absence of fear," said Mistral, "but I am sure that, since it's cliche, you know it and I don't need to repeat it?" She smiled at Aegir, shoulders relaxing just a little bit. "Dog is pretty good creep detection and repellant. Haven't met much that he can't kick the a** of."

Mendel's tongue lolled out of his mouth, and his affable pose did nothing to hide the fact that his teeth were plenty big, and probably sharp to boot. Mistral patted him on the paw. "Mmm," she said. "It's pretty ******** sick, the way the magic doesn't check if we can even do anything with it before cursing us with it."

Mistral's words made him duck his head a bit, the praise was nice...but undeserved, he felt. "No need." He confirmed, still smiling though he was yet trying to side-step being called brave (stupid and/or foolhardy were things he would have accepted). "He's a very good dog then and I'm glad he's around to take care of creeps." Youma might be another thing entirely though, how effective was he against the Negaverse's summoned monsters?

Okay, the teeth...yeah. Aegir adopted a pose that was more like a stretch he would have done in ballet to keep his hands away from Mendel's maw, just in case. "Yeah, I don't know...It's crazy how it seems to target kids. I was 16 and that...well, I guess that's probably the norm for us?"

Children. Fighting battles, fighting a war. Children that lived and died by the magic that changed them...and those that opposed it. It worried him - not everyone was so willing to jump into the fray as he was, after all.

"Well...at least you guys seem to get more coverage, costume-wise." Aegir was an expert on barely-there costumes. Yep.

"I know of a girl who awoke when she was twelve and died less than a year later," confirmed Mistral, solemnly. "Of course, she was a Zodiac, and they do not stay dead."

She sighed. "I have never met a senshi who awakened after the age of twenty-one," she said. She laid a hand over Mendel's collar, gently, and eyed Aegir's costume. It was... very very skimpy, yes. A leotard and a sash? No thank you. "If I had your costume, I would never transform," she said, rolling her eyes. "No one deserves to see what's under all this." Mistral plucked at the half-skirt with her fingers. In the future, she'd worn this same outfit. With a cape, but still...

Mistral said, "I have noticed that the magic does seem to make allowances for personal preference. My friend's girlfriend's uniform changes sometimes." From a tunic to a long jacket to no jacket--it didn't seem to make much sense, but Avalon never questioned it, so neither did Mistral. "If you are uncomfortable in it, perhaps something can be done on your homeworld?"

"Jesus, that's rough." Aegir said that but...it was basically an understatement and he was deeply disturbed by the thought of someone like his sister powering up and then dying so shortly. Wait a zodiac? He wracked his brain and recalled reading something about them...but not that they didn't stay dead. Which was kind of creepy but also a good thing he supposed?

"Be kinda sick if only kids can awaken...we're not prepared for the crap but we get thrust into it. Sink or swim. It's hard but...I dunno, I guess I'm just used to it by now?" The whole fighting evil by moonlight in a leotard that left nothing to the imagination bullshit, not kids being used in war. That wasn't something he could ever get used to, no way - no how. "I dance, I mean...I'm a performer so I'm kinda used to wearing very little. Not the best thing for fighting but maybe it'll change someday."

Homeworld huh? Perhaps. Maybe Mistral's right...that would be the best place to try...I've still not been though. "That's a good idea Mistral, thanks. I hadn't thought about it." He was going to avoid the potential bomb that was inherent in a woman's appearance, especially since he didn't have the experience with her to argue otherwise...even if he thought she was nice.

"Believe me, I'm looking into it," said Mistral with a hollow laugh. "I know knights can awaken into their forties, but I've never met a senshi older than..." She paused. How old was Oenone? "Twenty-six? I don't know much more than that." She fiddled with the golden coins on her sash, shrugging.

Visiting his homeworld had been a good idea. She smiled, a little smugly, and then apropos of nothing at all, yawned. "I should head home," she said. "Work in the morning. Will you be alright?"

"Well...if you find out, do you think you would be able to let me know?" Because honestly, that was...kind of important to who and what he was. "I'm only twenty, so..." Telling her that didn't hurt anything, now did it?

They sat for a moment and he watched Mendel's ear twitching; when he looked up Mistral had a pleased smile on her face - a bit smug even, but hey, she'd earned the right so Aegir didn't hold it against her. The yawn made him laugh and lean back, "Probably a good idea. I've got work too." He pushed himself up off the cement, dusting at his backside to dislodge stray particles. "I'll be just fine, even without a fine guard dog."

He offered her a hand up, but wouldn't be upset if she didn't want to take it.
