The memory of Methone was still fresh in Amphitrite's mind as she struck out again. It should have been a routine night, this time - she had gathered a fair amount of energy already, easy enough strolling through the park on an unseasonably warm Saturday night. A few drunks that would never know the difference, easy prey - part of her thought it was too easy, but really, if it helped then how should it matter if it was easy or difficult?

She had no idea anyone was looking for her - no one from the other side, anyway. She knew she could count on the fact that someone from her side would never be too far away. Some part of her wondered if that was because they couldn't quite trust her yet, but she liked to assume this was how they operated in the Negaverse, or at least took care of their "fresher" members. However they meant it, she felt confident out here at night.

So it was less fear, and more logic that caused her to tense when she sensed something foreign, and strong, her gaze fluttering among the darkened trees. Her jaw tightened. "Who's there?"

Pulling herself back together after New Year's had been...difficult, to say the least. Penthesilea had never been one to admit weakness, though, and so as soon as she felt like she could be out again, she had been. But she was more cautious now, more ready to call for help, and less likely to trust an officer's intentions. She had let her guard down around Lellouch, and that had been a mistake. One she would not repeat.

She could feel a corrupt aura, and she shuddered. Penthe wasn't sure if it was because she had been one of them, in that terrible nightmare future, or if it was because of how closely she was bonded with her planet, but corrupt auras felt, somehow, particularly dissonant and skin-crawling to her now.

Still, she could handle one corrupt - and if there turned out to be more, she would not make the mistake of letting her guard down. So when the girl asked who was there, she decided she ought to present herself. Her odd aura would have given her away anyway.

"Just little ol' me, darlin'," she said, and when she stepped out so the Corrupt could see her, it was with a bit of a hip-sway. Project confidence and they will never realize you might be afraid.

Amphitrite's heart beat faster when the senshi emerged, and she resisted the urge to shudder. That wasn't who she was anymore. But this also wasn't something like Methone. Her power hadn't been too far beyond her reach; this senshi was on a completely different level, and it showed in every possible way. Her fuku. The way she carried herself. The strange markings on her skin, almost familiar, but not in the prickling way others she'd met had been. That aura, that tone, that look in her eyes...

She couldn't attack. It would be suicide. But she also didn't want to run, because she also wasn't a coward. So instead she held herself proudly, as though she herself were confident in this meeting in spite of the fact that she had no right no be. Amphitrite reminded herself that she had a communicator. If things went south, she always had her communicator to fall back on. She was making friends, or at least alliances, in high places - if she called, she felt confident they would come support her.

"Well, 'little ol' me' - you got a name to go with that?" she asked cooly, crossing her arms in front of her chest. Was this senshi even much older than her? - no way to tell. Amphitrite didn't even know her own age anymore.

Penthe drew herself up a bit taller - not easy at only 5'3". "Eternal Sailor Pentheselia, Senshi'a War," she said, matter of factly. "An' you are?"

If she'd wanted to, she probably could have made this a very unpleasant evening for the Corrupt - the disparity in their power levels was fairly great, and she was never opposed to playing "whack a Nega." But so far the kid seemed like not a threat, and it would be cruel to throw her around. A first-stage Corrupt might be saveable. A first-stage Corrupt might be a dumb lost kid. And she was alone, anyway, so Penthe could risk being a little gentler.

"An' how'd a pretty thing like you end up in th'Negaverse? Real shame, that is." Friendliness wasn't easy for her, but she'd give it a shot. Not that she would let her guard down, because Lellouch's betrayal still sort of stung, even though she should have expected it.

War. Amphitrite didn't bother to stifle the surge of envy that welled up in the pit of her stomach. What an impressive source of power... she was coming to appreciate what shells could do for her, but war. What she wouldn't have given. In any case, the name did nothing at all for her. Penthe was not familiar in any sense.

When Penthe went on speaking, Amphitrite couldn't help but crack a smile. It was twisted at the end, warped. "Yeah, it was... it's a real shame you people left me to die, " she purred out. Although she knew she wasn't on this woman's level, the words, piped full of icy venom, made the young corrupt feel stronger than she was. "I wonder what I did that made you people abandon me... was it just because I was weak? - or was it more personal? - it doesn't really matter now though, does it?"

Penthesilea narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms in front of her chest. This was an accusation she'd never heard before, ******** are you on about?" She asked. She looked the Senshi up and down, racking her brain for any memory or recognition - but this girl was a stranger to her. It probably wasn't personally her fault, then. "I ain't never seen you 'fore t'night, sweet thing, I'd definitely remember." The terms of endearment were probably not welcome, but she slathered them on heavily. It was an inbred part of her speech, but she was also entirely fond of giving Negaversers exactly the amount of respect she believed they deserved - that is, exactly none.

Maybe a little surprisingly, Amphitrite began to laugh. It was barely a giggle at first, but it escalated into full blown hysterics. "Sorry, honey, " the senshi wasn't the only one that could throw around terms of endearment, "Just, hah, wow." She mockingly wiped her eye as if to wipe away a tear of laughter, shaking her head. "That answered my question right there. General-Queen was right about you people."

Another chuckle, another moment to take a deep breath to recover herself, and Amphitrite was ready to speak again. "Were you aware of the New Year's mission? - I don't know how many of you people were actually involved. My memory's a little foggy, you see, " and the corrupt was visibly amused by her own joke if no one else was as she gestured to her head.

Penthesilea crossed her arms, and her stance shifted to far more defensive. She narrowed her eyes.

"Oh, no, I don't ********' remember s**t 'bout the New Year's mission, ain't like I was kidnapped an' tortured for a ********' week." Her tone was sharp, cold, more defensive than it had been. "Ain't like one'a your lieutenants cut me open an' then put me back t'gether, an' then started all over." Her Transcendence marks wrote over the scars in this form, but they were still visible enough.

"So you were there." The sympathy in Amphitrite's voice was lacking, and her eyes were cold although she smiled. "I was too - only they weren't my lieutenants then, " she corrected, taking a few steps around the eternal senshi in a wider circle. She knew she was playing with fire here. "Like I said, it's foggy - maybe you heard me there?"

Her smile broadened, and her teeth flashed in the light of Penthe's glow. "I probably sound different when I scream." She laughed lightly. "Anyway, the rescue came - but no one came for me."

The corrupt shrugged her shoulders. Surely Penthe could figure the rest out.

Penthe was ready to challenge, to spit and snarl and growl, to lash out violently, even -- but all of that stopped in one cold, terrifying moment when she realized exactly what Amphitrite was saying.

That while they'd been busy rescuing her, the people coming for them all had left Amphitrite behind. Amphitrite and who knew how many others? Because certainly she could hope it was just Amphi, but that seemed naiive.

It meant that whoever had saved her had wasted their time carrying out someone incorruptible, and left this poor girl to a fate worse than death.

But she refused to let the cracks in her resolve show in front of the enemy, because this girl had clearly made herself an enemy.

"I heard a lotta screaming, maybe I did hear you. Couldn'ta done s**t at the end, I was ********' unconscious an' then I spent 'bout a month and a half in th'hospital recoverin'. But it ain't Order's fault. Order didn't kidnap you. They came t'save us all, an' th'Negaverse musta pulled you out 'fore thy could find you. Your new buddies're th;ones that tortured you, th'ones that took you away from your family and turned you into something you ain't."

"See, here's the thing, " and she pointed to her temple with a sweep of her hand, and her smile grew broader still, tight at the edges. This senshi, she sounded proud and confident as she said that, but - "My memory's not what it used to be. I remember hearing the 'rescue'. I remember screaming, and pleading... and I know, " and she laughed softly, darkly. "I know how long I sat there in the dark after that. They kept me there for weeks, waiting for someone to come try and get me. They even cut the guards, you know. There were only one or two by the end. But no one ever even tried."

Amphitrite was trying to sound light and jovial, eerily so - but that last part - at that last sentence, she sounded impossibly bitter. No one ever even tried. "Not that it matters now."

The corrupt laughed again. "But isn't it funny, how my 'enemies' were the ones that took pity on me? - thought I was worth saving? - even I didn't, " and she just laughed harder, although her eyes glinted coldly. "I begged them to kill me, and look at me now. Just look at me. - don't you think it's funny, Penthe? Don't you?"
