Upon waking that morning, Raikinti had decided he'd spent enough time wandering the forest, and gone far too long without visiting the ocean. Considering how interested in Mers and Kelpi both he and Delrialto were, it made perfect sense that they'd been visiting the ocean fairly steadily. However, with Delri taking off to visit some mystery friend, Raik was somewhat left behind. Without his usual 'wingman', the half Cerynei had taken to exploring the forests and fields nearby.

He'd long ago settled in a clearing that was near enough to his friends that they could visit regularly. However he was also close enough to make regular forays to search the ocean. The distant sound of the surf roaring against the sand made Raik's ears perk as he walked through the thinning woods. The trees were rapidly shrinking and thinning, allowing more of the sound and scent of the beach to drift to him on the breeze. Now and again he could catch glimpses of blue-green expanse and whitecap waves.

'Looks like you made it on your own, won't Delri be annoyed?'

With a curious snort, the copper-coated stallion called Raikinti gave himself a shake from nose to tail and then inched through the salt-grass that covered the white sand dunes. He stepped gingerly over the white grains, strides light and skittering. The beach sand sighed under his hooves, sending him skidding down a dune with a delighted laugh.

He'd not been to this beach before, but considering how close it was to his home glade, it might just be his new favorite.

'No Mers in sight! No one to exchange news with or challenge to a race? What bad luck!' The Kelpi mare sighed internally to herself and then turned back toward the coast. Maybe she would consult the tide pool, maybe she would just take a walk...

Coming up from a refreshing deep-dive within view of the coast, Sahaena exhaled loudly and laughed as her breath plumed like mist in the salt air. The sound of it was not unlike that which the dolphins made when they blew out a deep breath, but her laughter was clear and sweet over the sigh and roar of the ocean. Shaking her head to free some of the water from her ears, the crimson-scaled mare allowed her tail to direct her toward land, striking out with decisive hooves as she cut through the water. As she swam toward the beach she craned her head forward, allowing her body to stretch into smooth, swimming strides powered by the elegant s-curve flicks of her tail. There was little pleasure like that she took from deep dives in the reassuring thrum of the ocean, though she was quite fond of surfing the waves when the mood overtook her.

But that was a frolicking, wild sort of thrill. It wasn't like what she felt when she was diving. No, that was different, was deeper and still and true. It rang in her chest even as she swam toward the dark black that seemed to stretch unending below her. It was home to her, the wild sea and its hidden depths. It was a part of her.

But she was somewhat of the land too, and so had taken to regular walks where she even explored a bit of the woods when the mood overtook her. So with another soft laugh she turned her focus toward the beach itself, and resolved herself to a day spent of exploring on land.

There would always be time for the ocean a little later.

Weaving his way through the sea of salt grass, Raik hesitated long enough to snatch a mouthful of the greenery and chew it thoughtfully. Eyes fixed on the distant blue and white of the ocean, he considered the possibility of making a meal of the beach grass.

Well.. After a moment's consideration the stallion decided that he certainly wouldn't want to dine solely on the grass. Largely because it had a salty sort of taste.. It also rasped a bit, dryly and whispery as he chewed. That at least was familiar to him, reminded him something of the plains of his homeland. Nothing like the soft, sweet grass he had come to know and love in this place... Especially when it was damp with dew.

Sweet grass covered in morning dew... Raikinti thought of it with a fond sigh. That was his personal favorite, really. Though he was quite fond of apples, now that he had finally had a chance to try them. The tart bite of the greens made his muzzle tingle, but the soft crunch of sweet reds were the best.

Still, the salt-grass was interesting... and it was probably a good staple for a beach-dweller, and when salt was what one was after...

"Not bad, all said and done." He determined after another minute of thoughtful chewing. "Not bad, at all."

Storing the knowledge away for later, he paced out of the grass and slid the rest of the way down the dune, making his way toward where the surf pounded the sand flat and smooth. Maybe he'd do a bit of wading, since he'd made it this far.

'Bad luck that Irri's obviously off on one of his own adventures today... The least he could do was tell me so I could tag along!' She thought to herself with a soft laugh as she headed back toward the beach. 'I'll have to remember to tell him that, too. Still, maybe he'll have some stories to share, so I better get one or two of my own together!'

Sahaena made a few more swimming strides inland, flicking an ear as her hooves began to lightly glance off of rocks and then eventually the seabed itself. Every third or so stride she was able to make solid contact with the ocean floor, and used it to propel herself forward. With the helpful push of a few waves she was soon able to stand on the sea floor and trot toward land, chin carefully held up to avoid catching a muzzle of water.

"Almost there now." She smiled to herself, then gave a few bounding leaps so she could move comfortably, the water now neck-high, then chest, slowly retreating as she continued to move forward. "And... oh... Hmmm."

The Kelpi mare narrowed golden eyes as she noticed a copper-coated stranger sliding down the bank and heading toward the ocean. He was certainly a land-born type, and she wasn't entirely sure why someone like him would head to the sea. Still, maybe he would have an interesting tale to tell...

"Good day." She offered a casual greeting as she hesitated in the water, more comfortable with the waves lapping at her belly than she would be standing on the beach free of the ocean's embrace. If he decided to be troublesome she could always dive back to freedom, on land that wasn't an option.

Slipping and sliding down the dunes resulted in a plume of sand heralding Raikinti's arrival to the beach. He laughed softly as he watched the sand settle, shaking himself before beginning his trek across the beach proper. However, half-way there he hesitated, noticing a bold red and black figure moving toward the beach. Narrowing his eyes thoughtfully, he watched the way the mare moved and decided she must be a Kelpi, rather than a Mer.

'Well, that's a first.' He thought to himself, resuming his walk toward the surf. 'Can't say I've ever met one of those before.'

And Delri was bound to be jealous, but that was something to think about another time... Though he certainly couldn't wait to tell his friend about it later.

He stopped when the waves were lapping at his hooves, smiling faintly as the waves surged forward. Sea foam sprayed up to his knees before the wave retreated again, leaving cooling crystal drops over the copper and black markings. A moment later the water returned, pressing just a little further forward. From the look of things, tide was coming in, and on it...

"Good day." He returned her greeting with a faint bob of his head. "And a lovely one at that. I hope I am not disturbing you, I merely sought to visit the ocean today. It is not a sight I got to experience in my home, and I am afraid I am quite enthralled."

Truth be told, the ocean was not the only sight he found thus... But that certainly wasn't something one said at the first meeting, now was it?

She couldn't help but laugh a little as she watched his somewhat exuberant descent. He seemed to be quite thoroughly enjoying himself by doing something as simple as slip-sliding down a dune, but then Sahaena was fairly sure she'd done that very thing as a filly. So then, she couldn't really make fun, could she?

He was just, embracing it a little later in life. Then again, as soon as he gave his explanation it all made much more sense. If he'd never had cause to visit the ocean in his homeland, or if it were landlocked, then he certainly didn't have the same opportunities as a foal. Which was a shame, because there was something to be said for climbing the highest sand dune and sliding down as a foal.... She'd not found them big enough as an adult.

"It is indeed." She offered with a smile. "And no, no disturbance at all. I admit that I have done the very thing on more than one occasion... And I certainly cannot blame you for enthusiasm during one of your first trips to the ocean. To this day she fills me with joy, I cannot blame you for finding yours here too."

She gave a soft laugh and shook some of the water from her scales, flaring her fins in the sunlight. "I am Sahaena, and it is a pleasure to meet another fan of the ocean!"

Raik was glad that he was close enough to hear her laugh as she watched him slide through the sand, and he didn't even mind the amusement. He was sure he looked a little silly, but the fun was well worth it. And the mirth in dancing golden eyes as they fixed on him certainly didn't hurt.

"Don't knock it until you try it." He teased with a grin. "With a little bit of work, I bet I could turn it into something like a game... And whoever slides the fastest wins!"

Come to think of it, it would probably work in the snow too... He'd have to find a high hill in winter and give it a try. But that was a thought for another time, at any rate.

The fact that she admitted to sliding down the dunes made him laugh, shifting his weight in a half-rear as he chuckled. "Aha! So you know exactly how fun it is. And here I was thinking you didn't understand. My apologies then, Lady of the Sea."

He glanced past her toward the ocean, letting the low roar of waves fill his chest until he was sure his heart beat with each crash upon the beach. "I have never seen another place like it, and I have traveled much as of late looking for something like home. I cannot help envy those who are lucky enough to live in it, and see what wonders it holds."

He turned at her introduction, green eyes glinting bright. "Sahaena, well met. I am Raikinti, but 'Kinti or Raik suits me well enough. A pleasure to meet you."

He noticed her amusement in the wake of his silly antics, but did not seem particularly upset by her laughter. In fact, he took it in good grace, grinning at her with laughing green eyes and teasing right back. Her, knock sand-sliding? Well, he didn't know her at all... Nor did he know what sorts of antics a Kelpi foal might invent for themselves if left to their own devices.

"There are many upon many kelpi foals that could take credit for your game, wanderer." She teased, her tone tart and expression filled with a mocking sort of disdain that threatened to shatter into laughter at any moment. "I am sure there would be a mutiny if you claimed it to be your idea. As for the chance of you winning? I am sure it would be negligible."

She gave a mournful shake of her head, though halfway through the gesture she lost her battle with severity and was once again laughing. "No offense taken, Child of the Earth, and I am not in the least upset by it. In truth I am amused to see you here at all, much less indulging in such foalish antics. It makes me think well of you, regardless."

She saw his eyes drift to the see, understanding flickering through her. "So then, you are here for the Sea? A good reason, to be sure. And though I dare not travel far from it, I agree there is no sight that could be seen and compare to it. As for the wonders below, they are many and varied as those on the land. In that at least all children of the world are equal if they will take the time to look at things in another way."

She inclined her head in a nod at his introduction, smiling. "A pleasure too to meet you, Raik... And welcome to the Sea. May I ask if you were merely coming to watch the waves for a time, or do you also swim?"

In most ways Raik was pleased things had timed out like they had, that she had seen him having a bit of fun and not been among the waves a moment earlier. The discussion was a pleasant one, lighthearted and teasing. It was good, really, for him and probably for her. With Delri being away so often and Raik being so shy, he hadn't had much of a chance to make friends yet. Perhaps this would be a turning point.

"Would they now?" He chuckled. "Well they're wiser than I, I am sure... So then it was just a passing fancy that struck me, and was their game to begin with. If I might be allowed to come referee, I will be content. I would rather not risk the mutiny or being forced to walk the plank."

But playing with the foals sounded fun, and cheering them on to see who slid the fastest or the furthest? That seemed like something he could really go for. "I am glad my momentary foolishness has served me well and not ill, Lady of the Sea. It is a pleasure to meet you and an honor to be regarded well. I have had little chance to make friends in this land, this seems particularly good luck to me."

He glanced back to the ocean at her question. "Yes, I am.. Though I am sure that is not a surprise to you. I have seen glimpses in my travels, though my homeland is largely flat and dry and lacks such splendor as this. But because it seemed like time, here I am. As for swimming, I have in the lakes and rivers.. It is a pleasant way to cool off, where I come from. But in water such as this? No."

His ears flicked forward, curious about the beauties in the depths, but he couldn't quite bring himself to ask. "So, you have traveled inland on occasion?"

Sahaena tried to imagine a flock of indignant kelpi foals badgering the groundwalker about rules and speed and which hill was the best and why. The mental image was all to endearing, but she tried not to laugh let it be misunderstood. The swirling riot of fins and scales all clamoring or Raikinti's attention was an endearing image.

She didn't think he'd survive them long unless he managed to win them over. "Indeed they would, I think foals have been sliding the sand dunes for as long as I can remember. I certainly did so in my youth. Still, if you would volunteer to decree a winner, they might forgive you."

It was a relief to hear she was not the only one short on friends. "Well then we are both of us richer for the experience. That makes this day a double blessing, I think."

"Travel? Yes, well, here and there." Sahaena replied with a faint duck of her head. "I have met a few of those that live on the earth, and we have passed some pleasant time with conversation. I would like to travel more, perhaps one day it shall be so."

She gave him a playful smile. "If ever you wish to learn how to swim in the ocean, I would be happy to teach you. I also have a friend or two that might help, if you are worried about the waves. We will ensure you come to no harm. After all, if you did, who would referee the foals while they slide down the dunes?"

He could just see her imagining him trying to hold his own among the foals, and gathered he was not doing so well. At least not in her mind. Then again, she probably knew exactly how many he'd have to deal with, and what the personalities were. Strong willed foals that would probably stomp all over him, from the looks of things.

The idea made him chuckle, mostly at himself. He adored being around foals. Loved the bright minds and inquisitive natures and the fact that they all clamored to be herd at once and found joy in every moment. That was the sort of thing that was good for your heart. Kept you young and made you forget all your worries, at least for the day.

"If that is the case, I will be glad to stand here and referee the day away." He agreed easily. "Perhaps it will afford the parents a break, and I certainly would not be accused of favoritism since none if them would be mine. I'll need backup, but I am willing if my new friend is?"

He recalled that he had interrupted her while she stood in the surf, and worried perhaps that she'd been out of the water too long. As it stood he needed to be heading back, and he wanted things to end on a high note. with that thought, Raikinti gave her a final, satisfied nod and then laughed. "But where are my manners? I have kept you from the sea long enough, oh Scarlet Lady. I am sure you must be going and so must I. But hope we can meet again soon, Sahaena. And in truth, I look forward to both the games and the swimming lesson."

The Cerynei stallion grinned. "Until next time?"

She rather liked that he didn't take himself too seriously, and wanted to meet the foals. There were some stallions that could not care less about the little darlings, thinking it was a mare's job to raise the young while the stallion did... Well, whatever stallions wanted, she supposed. That sort of thinking was not at all endearing, and made for a poor example to young colts.

Raikinti was different. Was soft and gentle and endearing. She trusted him, which was certainly saying something. It would be fun to help select the winners of the sliding races. Maybe they'd make a day of it. She'd have to think on it further, perhaps talk things over with Irridian.

"Good. I might get some help and we could host water races too." She offered. "But either way, I would be pleased to lend you my aid. I would not want you to be overcome by enemy forces."

It was easy to tease him too, which she liked for all that it surprised her.

"I would think your manners have been preset the whole time, but you are very kind to worry about me." The Kelpi mare smiled and nodded. "And you are right, I was on my way to the sea. Still, it was pleasant to talk with you and I do hope you visit again soon. And for longer, next time."

She took a step backward, moving toward the sea. "I wish you safe travels, my new friend... Be well and return soon, perhaps with stories of what happens on the earth. I will bring you tales of the sea, I promise."
