Amanda sighed into her cup, eyes glazed and scarf piled up into a ball on the tabletop. It was getting too warm to wear her and her twin's favorite style, a fact that only served to depress her. Speaking of depressing her, the test paper laid out in front of her, the red 79 mocking her from the top of the sheet. True, her professor was a notorious hard-nose when it came to grading, but she had tried so hard to well on this test.
It didn't help anything that it had been the midterm and therefore weighted more heavily than any of the other quizzes she'd done fine on. "There goes my shot at having all As this semester." she muttered bitterly, sipping on the warm tea in her cup. The cafe was crowded today, and she'd already had several people try to sit on her. It wasn't their fault - she just had no presence. The result of this had been she was forced to play table-hop so the plethora of couples could stare at each other with goo-goo eyes.
Amanda wished her sister was there - if only to have someone to talk to. She'd complain about her problems when they were in the secrecy of their apartment, but at the moment she really wanted someone to fill her otherwise dull day with excited chatter. 'I hope she does well on her exam today - she was really stressed about it.' she thought, stirring her drink and casting a dull glance around the noisy cafe. 'I'll get her something from here when I pack up and head back to the apartment so it'll still be warm.'
Heather had been shut up in their hometown, but had blossomed beautifully in the city - with all it's freedoms and thought-provoking encounters. Amanda continued to find solace in her more introverted ways, often being accused of being a pushover because of it, but she didn't mind.
She disliked confrontation most of all.Ruler of Everything Cue Kaosu entering her life and disrupting everything y/y?

It was an absolutely beautiful day. The sun was shining high in the sky, finally bringing forth a late Spring, but Spring all the same. Birds were fluttering about, chirping excitedly to finally be able to stretch their wings without fear of catching a chill. All were in great spirits. That is, except for Kaosu.
Kaosu hadn't left the house in what man would call a very long time. He finally managed to clean himself up enough to venture outside, after having forgotten how much energy "outside" really required. He found he didn't have much energy for socializing recently. The collapse of his past relationship left him distraught and quite bitter. He didn't have the same kind of patience he used to.
Once outside, Kaosu had walked for only a short bit before realizing outside really wasn't where he wanted to be. And so, the next door he passed he quickly ducked into. He soon found himself inside a cute little cafe packed to the brim with lovestruck couples. Rolling his eyes, he turned to head back outside, but found himself pushed further into the shop by yet another couple eagerly entering. He quickly scanned for empty seats and immediately found just one - opposite of a rather downcast female who appeared to be - was she talking to herself? 'It's always the weird ones,' Kaosu thought, shaking his head and stepping towards her.
"You realize," he started, "if you didn't sit around in public talking to yourself you might actually be desirable enough to come here with someone." Without another word he took the seat across from her, scanning the table and noting a scarf partly obscuring a completed exam. Eyebrows knitted together, Kaosu lifted his eyes to her, awaiting an explanation.

Amanda jumped slightly when an unfamiliar male voice addressed her, barely saving herself the trouble of having to find out if tea stains came out of her favorite silver-blue knitted scarf. His words finally sank into her brain as he flopped down into the seat across from her and she felt her grip on her cup tighten in annoyance. What was with today? She just couldn't catch a break! First she woke up late, then she got back last week's test with a less-than-stellar grade, and not some rude guy was invading her space and picking on her! "And why exactly should I listen to you?" she snapped, frowning at the complete stranger.
"Besides, who's to say I'm not talking to myself because I'm clinically insane? Making fun of a mentally handicapped stranger - you'd be quite the jerkface, then, now wouldn't you?" she said, sniffing primly and taking a dainty sip from her drink. Ah, perhaps some of her sister's social justice drive was rubbing off on her. She normally didn't like even talking to other people, much less scolding them. But, after the day she'd had, she supposed she was allowed a tantrum or two.
'If he upsets me too much, I'll just leave.' Amanda thought, eyeing the man critically. "What's you name, anyway?" she asked, setting down her drink so she could grab her shameful test and shove it in her bag so she could make a quick escape if need be. Who's to say that HE was the one that wasn't totally in his right mind? "I don't suppose we have any classes together?" Was she searching for a rhyme or reason to the man's harassment? Why did he bother her so?

The indignant look on the girl's face was almost enough to make Kaosu chuckle. Almost. He was rather surprised when she retorted angrily; he half-expected her to simply accept his presence and his words without much of a fight. However, quite the opposite; here she sat chastising Kaosu, angrily glaring at him from across the table. Watching as she quickly shoved the exam into a bag, he quirked a brow. 'What's that all about?' Rather than inquire, Kaosu tilted his head and leaned forward, feigning anger. "How dare you call me a jerkface. For all you know, I could be a jerkface, and making fun of a jerkface stranger? Well..." He trailed off and leaned back, eyes glinting, enjoying throwing the girl's silly words back at her.
'Classes?' Kaosu nearly reached up to scratch his head in confusion before remembering that school was what normal Noodles did in their otherwise free time. Instead of directly answering either of her questions, he merely shrugged. "Isn't it a bit rude to demand my name before introducing yourself? My mother-" he halted mid-sentence, about to go on a rant about how well his mother had raised him before he thought better of it. He shook his head slightly, attempting lamely to forget the fact that he hadn't seen his mother in ages. Best to worry about that another time. "You can call me Kaosu. And no, I don't go to... school, or wherever it is you think you may know me from. What might your name be? If you so deign to tell me." He added the last bit with a small smile, trying half-heartedly not to be such a "jerkface." The girl did look rather flustered, not just by him but by life itself, and it simply wasn't fair of him to use her for target practice.

'Oh, goodie. He thinks he's funny.' Amanda thought, huffing out an exasperated sigh when the unknown man attempted to throw her words back at her. She felt her annoyance flare when her leaned back smugly, a scowl twisting itself onto her lips. She didn't feel like rising to his bait, however, and refused to reply. Her way of dealing with things tended to be a bit passive-aggressive, at any rate, much to her more straight-forward twin's occasional ire.
And then he attempted to scold HER! "Isn't it a bit rude to sit down at a stranger's table and make haughty remarks about them?" she snapped, taking another gulp of her tea. It was getting cold, and wasn't doing much to sooth her wounded ego as much as she had hoped when she bought it. Coffee was meant to keep her awake through lectures and assignments, hot chocolate was meant to be a treat for a job well done, and tea was meant to still her mind from the pressures of her day-to-day life. Today, it seemed, her mantra of beverages was proving to be ineffective. Granted, that could be due to the unfortunate table-mate she was dealing with but-
"Kaosu? That's... unique?" she said hesitantly, still rather shell-shocked by the man's sudden change of tactics. Ah, so they didn't know each other. Perfect strangers, then. "Oh, um, I'm Amanda Rowlander. You can call me Amanda, though." Somehow, his nice routine was flustering her worse than his initial jerkiness. Today was most definitely not her day!

Kaosu shrugged slightly, amused. "Perhaps it is a bit rude. So sue me," he said, the statement jumbling out as his hair flopped over his eyes. Pawing at it, he smoothed his hair back, hoping it didn't look too terrible. He hadn't left the house anticipating interacting with anyone and started to grow minutely self-conscious.
It seemed his turn of character caught the girl off-guard. Kaosu smiled politely, nodding. He knew his name was unique. But then again, his entire family was unique. A goddess and a warrior for parents, two powerful warrior sisters, and a tree riddled with vampires and other undead, he was probably the most normal of them all. "Amanda. Pretty. Fitting. Normal." His eyes widened as he realized he was thinking out loud, in that stuttered way of his, and struggled to find something else to cover up his musings. Mind wandering, he'd started to reminisce on his initial attraction to Lucrecia - she was eery, strange, and completely mysterious. A whole lot of good that'd done him.
Grasping at straws, he finally blurted, "Are you going to tell me what was with that test you put away? You seemed pretty flustered, didya fail?" Mannerisms ever lacking, he knew there was no way she actually failed, but why else would Amanda rush to put it away? She had to be embarrassed. Or maybe she'd done so well she hadn't wanted to brag? Kaosu quirked his brow once again, expectantly awaiting a response.

Amanda could only huff a sigh at his reply, struggling to resist the urge to roll her eyes. She watched with minuscule interest as he attempted to tamed his fluffed up technicolor hair (with little success), preferring instead to flick her eyes out and around the cafe. It was still quite crowded, much to her low-grade annoyance. However, it seemed that having someone sitting with her had stopped others from attempting to sit on her. For the time being, at least. 'At least his presence has served to do something OTHER than annoy me.'
When he nodded politely to her introduction, she couldn't help but crack a smile. Maybe he was having just as terrible a day as she was? Though, judging by his rumpled appearance and dark circles under his eyes that seemed like they'd been there long enough to look tattooed on, Amanda could only assume that his 'bad day' had been going on much longer than a mere 24 hours. She was so deep into her musings she barely gave a thought to her reply. "Actually, it means "lovable" or "worthy of love". I think the root word is Latin-based, but it's been a while since I looked it up." she murmured, tilting her head to the side a tad in her attempt to decipher what his eye color actually was. "I suppose our parents liked pretty names, though. My twin's name is Heather - it's a pink or white flower that grows in the mountains."
Amanda jumped slightly at Kaosu's sudden question. The nature of his question, however, caused her momentary contented fascination to fade. "No, I didn't fail..." she said slowly, biting her bottom lip to stop herself from frowning. "I just didn't do as well as I'd hoped. It's... Just really disappointing when you try your best but your best wasn't good enough." She wasn't normally an emotional person - not by a long shot. But just admitting her failure aloud, even if it was to a relatively complete stranger, seemed to hit a nerve and to her horror she felt her eyes start to tear up. She quickly ducked her head, alarmed and ashamed.

Kaosu watched as the girl continued on, pondering on the origins of both her and her sister's - 'did she say twin?' - names. Did she really think this kind of information was interesting to other people? Name etymology wasn't really something he was curious about, personally, and couldn't foresee many others being too fanatical about. A sarcastic comment bubbled up in his mind, but he decided it was best not to criticize her. She seemed rather upset already.
Tilting his head, Kaosu chuckled. He didn't mean to sound rude (not this time, at least), but it just seemed silly to him. Then again, he was sure he'd grown up a lot differently than Amanda had. "But on the bright side, at least you didn't fail!" He sounded rather cheery, he noticed, so he shook his head and retried. "I'm sorry, I just... I kind of live in failure. I have two sisters that inherited some 'special powers' from our parents and I was always the untalented, not-good-enough one of the bunch. You kinda learn to aim low after that." He shrugged. "You seem smart, I'm sure this won't reflect on your grades too badly. You just sound like you're being a huge worrywart and it's really rather ridiculous. It's just a grade." Kaosu meant to be reassuring in his own, lackadaisical way, but he could already tell that Amanda really cared about this stuff for some dumb reason. Blatantly ignoring her physical reaction to her own disappointment, he lounged back and yawned. Who really cared about grades, anyway?

Kaosu's initial back-handed attempt at cheering her up only served to make her sigh. However, the brief explanation of his own past sparked her interest. "Well, I suppose a consolation could be that you also seem to have less responsibilities - your sisters have a lot they have to deal with because of their uniqueness, but you have the blessing of blending in and actually being able to do what YOU want without serious consequences." she said, shrugging. She'd tried to mimic his lightheartedness, but her smile seemed more like a grimace - even to her.
She attempted to wipe her misty eyes discreetly, laughing bitterly. "Yes, it's just a grade. But when your entire enrollment hinges on good grades, with the threat of being forced to return to your backwater home town that features only cattle for friends - well, I don't think that's being ridiculous." she snapped, scowling. Amanda didn't like being upset, but it seemed when she was around this Kaosu that it was an ever-present feature in their interactions.

Although he appreciated her attempt and soothing old wounds, it was obvious even she didn't mean what she said. Shrugging, Kaosu explained, "I realized that a long time ago. I also realized being less-than-great is totally okay. I mean, look at me!" He laughed, stropping abruptly as he watched her get more and more upset. 'Jeeze, she really has a temper on her. Is she always so volatile?' he wondered before snapping back to listening.
While he intended to poke fun at her, he quickly realized that would only add fuel to the fire. Taking a deep breath to prevent any unwanted word vomit, he started, "Amanda, I didn't-" he sighed and attempted to start again. "Your home's really that bad? I'm... sorry," cringing a bit he continued, "Sometimes I forget that there's, like, reasons behind people's actions and... yeah." Clearly uncomfortable, Kaosu started looking around the cafe, eager to notice something other than the teary female across from him. Nothing made the typical boy feel more awkward than a crying girl and Kaosu was certainly no exception.

She couldn't help it. Amanda laughed his self-depreciating sense of humor. She, herself, had constantly struggled with her feelings of self-worth all throughout her school career - her confidence being completely and totally tied to her grades. But she could relate to him. Heather had never truly been introverted, despite how their hometown had forced her into being more quiet as they got older. And now that the twins were the most free they'd ever been in their lives, Amanda couldn't help but feel inadequate in comparison to her sister's ever-growing sense of self and personal growth. 'Seems we're more alike than I thought...'
Kaosu's cautious, stuttering half-apology shocked her. "I'm... I'm sorry, too." she said meekly, ducking her head and peeking at him through her lashes. "Having a bad day is no excuse for being so rude. I've said some really mean things to you and you didn't deserve them." With each word she seemed to shrink into herself. Amanda didn't mind apologizing - she'd known for a while that she was being unfair. But now she was feeling ashamed for having let her emotions get the better of her.
A thought occurred to her. "If you'd like, I could buy you a coffee or something?" she asked hesitantly, motioning to the counter that had become magically less crowded during the course of their heated conversation. She'd noticed he'd become uncomfortable, and she couldn't help but feel even worse for it.Ruler of Everything (I think I've started channeling Meg Ryan's character from You've Got Mail... Amanda was, in reality, a rather sweet, seemingly strong girl. But Kaosu couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that he needed to treat her as a fragile, delicate thing. Even though she'd fought nearly every negative comment he had thrown her way, she appeared to shrink into herself with her apology, becoming less than she really was. It was a strange thing to watch; Amanda went from raging mad, to crying, to offended, to laughing, to a near disappearance all in one conversation. It was enough to have Kaosu wondering if she struggled with some sort of mental disorder before he realized that he'd probably had nearly the same range of emotions since he'd entered the coffee shop.
At the mention of a drink, Kaosu visibly perked up. 'Now that's my kind of apology,' he thought happily, starting to smile. "I mean, if you brought me a black coffee it'd certainly work to make me dislike you less," he teased. Teasing was okay, right? He was still eyeing up Amanda, considering her a complete enigma, when he realized she may not enjoy the teasing. He almost visibly shrugged at the thought. 'She seems like she'd make a decent friend, but you can't win 'em all.' Although it was true he certainly could use a friend right now. It'd been a while since his last social interaction, and while this one wasn't going quite smoothly, hopefully he'd get better at talking to others with just a little more practice. From the way Kaosu automatically perked up at the mention of an apology-coffee, Amanda knew she'd be right to offer it. She wasn't really all that versed in social rulings and whatnot, but she'd seen enough movies to know that food and drink were generally a good choice when trying to be kind or apologize. "A black coffee?" she said, her voice lilting upward at the end of the phrase in almost a disbelieving question. From his hair alone, she'd assumed that he would enjoy some complex yet totally delicious coffee-milk-flavor mixture. 'Each to his own, I suppose. Dad and mom always take their coffee black, too, if I remember right...'
Shrugging mentally, Amanda stood and fished her wallet from her backpack. She picked up her now-empty cup and threw it in the recycle bin on her way to the counter. Thankfully, there no longer a line so she was able place her order quickly - a grande black coffee for Kaosu and a grande passionfruit tea with sweetener and a spritz of lemonade for her. Her conscious was clear the moment she paid for the drinks and she found herself smiling earnestly for the first time all day.
And then the cashier said something flirty to her as she picked up the two drinks and she was suddenly a flustered, blushing mess. Ducking her head she could only murmur a quiet "Oh, uh, thank you?" before turning and returning to her and Kaosu's table. She gently placed his black coffee on the table in front of him, flopping down into her own seat and slurping down a large gulp of her chilled tea in an attempt to cool her flamed cheeks. 'Why does this always happen to ME? Heather never has this problem!' she thought, pouting a little before looking at her table mate curiously. "Is your coffee okay?" she asked, tilting her head and trying desperately to forget her embarrassment.Ruler of Everything (Hehe, I'm glad! Kaosu grinned at her confusion. He knew he looked like someone who was deeply complicated with possibly eccentric tastes, but he really was rather normal and simple when it came down to it. Not that either of his parents had influenced that in any way - it was definitely a learned habit of his. Something he'd had to consciously work at to blend in with others, to have at least some version of normalcy in his life.
It was rather sweet of her to buy him a coffee, he thought. While he knew it was more for her own sake than for his, he really didn't mind - the sentiment was what truly counted. He gazed after her, watching how she startled at some words the cashier delivered with a sly smile. Kaosu chuckled, figuring the cashier had hit on her. Amanda was a rather pretty girl. Plain, comparatively to those he typically surrounded himself with, but pretty all the same. When she sat down the flush in her cheeks was blatantly visible. Pretending he had no idea what the cause, he cocked his head and asked, "Why do you look so flustered?" Kaosu knitted his brows together, attempting to look angry, "Did the cashier say something to you? Need me to rough him up? I am a trained warrior, you know..." He himself was rather surprised at his ability to remain in character. ChibiWrites (If you put together a list some time when you were bored and PMed it to me I certainly wouldn't complain~)
