The story of this universe is pretty simple.

In the Old Republic, everything is still canon up until the point when Malgus sacked the temple on Courscant. That attack never happened. Malgus never gained the traction that he had in the Sith Empire, and the Republic's faith in the jedi was never shaken. As a result, the cold war that existed between the Empire and Republic never ended.

10,000 years later, the Empire and Republic are still balanced precariously in a battle of patience, each politically powerful as the other, and both boasting a powerful military, but neither making any moves toward all-out war. The jedi order never lost Tython, and thus it still holds the original jedi temple, and the Sith Empire still holds Korriban as its main central power.

The republic is much the same as it was in the Old Republic, and the Sith Empire is somewhat more relaxed than it was. 10,000 years of cold war has bred some of the uncontrollable anger out of the Sith, and it is something of a more controllable beast now, though the power structure is still the same as the Old Republic era; a Dark Council and a powerful Emperor.

On the subject of technology, the cortosis shortage never happened. Armor technology is much the same as it was in the Old Republic, and weapon technology is much the same as it was in the time around the Battle of Yavin, meaning that they are both at the height of their power.

Both the Republic and the Empire host massive standing armies, who are employed in various conflicts all throughout the galaxy, and sometimes even fight each other in unofficial conflicts over contested planets (nothing official, so that war never breaks out). The jedi are often generals and soldiers in these armies, and the Sith are much the same.

That's about where we stand. Most planets are up for grabs. We can decide as they are created who controls them, but a large number of planets between the two systems are actually free of control, simply because they are not strategically valuable, or not worth the investment.

That's where we are. Remember, the main point of this story is to have fun. Everyone is at their most powerful, so freedom is the word, and while there will be story arcs introduced by the moderators, and occasional special events, there is an unusual amount of freedom over what you want your character to do. But please, have fun. That's what's important.
