Mirela grunted as she licked at the bite marks on her front leg. She had decided to roam out into the desert, away from the cave she was currently sharing with Jiji, to hunt for breakfast. In hindsight, it had likely been a really stupid idea. This part of the desert was different than where she had escaped to — though by looks alone, you couldn’t really tell. She hadn’t cared — or really thought about it — though and so she had set off, ready to show Jiji that she could contribute.
Right off the bat things hadn’t gone right. It hadn’t taken long to come upon a strange looking creature — no arms, instead it had bat like wings with clawed tips, two legs and very sharp looking teeth. She approached it slowly, sniffing both the ground and air and wrinkling her nose at the strange smell. When it didn’t seem as if it would move, Mirela launched herself at it. This move proved to be a big mistake. The creature squawked and bit down on her leg. A shooting pain shot straight through her and Mir’s magic seeped out and shoved at the creature. Letting go, it ran off and left Mirela to tend to the wound.
She huffed and pushed herself up off the desert ground and limped her way back to the cave. With each step she took, though, she felt as if she was growing weaker and weaker. The wound stung, more so than others ever had, and it felt as if something were crawling through her veins. She did not like the feeling and wished for nothing more than to be back home, on Soudul, where she at least knew what creatures she could and could not attack.
By the time she reached where JIji and her were staying, it took all Mirela had not to collapses then and there. Wish a mental push she forced her body forward, barely making it into the cave before collapsing and whining out.

Jijikko stretched, yawning deeply and pulling his long neck out to its full length as his talons kneaded the warm earth beneath them. After it was decided upon that Mirela would spend some time in his company for the present while, at least long enough to gain her bearings, get a feel for the location, and build up her wing strength — and strength in general — they had weathered a sandstorm together, and in the aftermath shared a nook for the night in the cliffside, Jijikko’s preferred perch. The following morning was crisp and bright, dawn a beacon of a new day over the rolling dunes, and Jiji felt like breakfast.
It was only after glancing back, though, to where he expected to find his smaller companion, that he noticed her space curiously vacant. Huffing curiously, he trotted back in and around, sniffing the area. It did seem as though he had slept in a bit, and she did seem the independent sort, so it didn’t surprise him a great deal that she had wandered off, but it still worried him. Even for a precocious youngling like herself, the desert was dangerous. He raised his snout, stepping out and scenting the area again more carefully. Very, very—
He made a garbled, rumbling sound as she staggered up over the lip and to the cave. “Mirela.” Jijikko snorted, starting over and immediately beginning an inspection of the clearly injured youngling. He, unfortunately, knew nothing of healing, but set to work cleaning the affected area anyway with his tongue, wanting to get at least that done to better assess the wound. The poison and wound-type he recognized, at least, having been a native of the desert all his life, and he kept some stores of plant life with him which served as a workable antidote. “Not too bad,” he assessed, “though if you would like to hunt and train more, I would recommend letting me know so that we can do it together. I’m happy to help.”

A quiet, muted whine escaped Mirela as Jiji cleaned and cared for her wound. “I wanted to surprise you with breakfast.” Her nose wrinkled up as she huffed. “I didn’t do so well, though. It wouldn’t let go and then I felt so weak.” Useless was what she felt, if she had to put a word to it. The creatures she had hunted, with her parents, on Soudul had been easy. Even the ones she had caught and ate when first lost in the desert hadn’t been that hard to subdue. She supposed, looking back on the last few days and that morning, Mir was lucky to even be alive. Escaping the dragon attack on her kidnappers had been luck enough itself.
“You’ve done so much to help me already. I...I didn’t want to be too much of a burden.”

Jijikko made a huffing, rumbling sound — half amusement and half a snort — and he shook his head, trotting back toward the cave and stomping to unearth some of his buried herbs before bringing them over towards his temporary charge. “Don’t be silly,” he said. “You did surprise me, after all. You accomplished half of what you wanted, and you aren’t a burden. I like having someone around. It makes life more interesting!” Catching some of the leaves in his teeth, he chewed before working to apply what he could to the wound. “It’s just a linkrept bite, in any case. Very small, very weak poison. The bite will last longer than the toxin and you should heal up after giving your body a day of rest or so. In the meantime, wait here a bit and I’ll fetch us breakfast. Apply more of that…” He nosed at the appropriate pile of herbs, “…to help numb the pain.”
And with that, he was off for the moment. Not wanting to travel far with his companion in her given state, he made quick work of it, retrieving several desert bouken that would have to do for now before returning to her. If she was feeling better by evening or the next day, he reasoned, they could perhaps hunt for something larger then.
“Surviving?” he asked, peeking around as he came to a land and deposited his hunting’s worth.

Mirela watched as Jiji took off out into the desert to accomplish what she had been too weak (and clueless of the desert) to do. She eyed the pile of herbs he'd left behind before scooting over closer to them so that should could apply some to the wound. At least Jiji was right about he poison. Already she could feel its effects slowly making its way out of her body. Her tail flicked back and forth as she thought of the strange creatures --- Jiji had called them Lirkrept --- and she vowed to one day have her revenge.
When Jiji returned, Mir's head perked up and her tail went from a hard twitch to a more fluid swish. Her stomach rumbled as he sat his catch down. Mir nodded and eyed their breakfast. "I have survived." She snorted and glanced back up to Jiji. "Thank you."

“Anything for a little lady,” Jijikko asserted cheerfully, prancing around to her side before starting in on the caught snack. “It looks, though, like you could use a real hunting lesson, mm? We could go together. Take on something bigger and prepare you for the wilds.” He gave a muted, satisfied trill at the thought as he gnawed on the meat before him. At least as a young one — and still today, for that matter — adventure always appealed to him, and to get the chance to participate in passing a little of his learnings on to another youngling was a prize indeed.
It also, of course, meant more food, and there was never anything wrong with that so far as Jiji could tell. Not to mention, there was plenty enough time left in the day.
“We couldn’t take on anything too fierce with you healing up…” Jijikko lifted his snout, sniffing the desert winds. “But a prey animal, like a dalak, couldn’t do too much damage, and with me there, I’d see you were safe. They live nearer to the mountains, though…” He tilted his head back, eyeing her inquisitively. “How are your wings feeling?”

Mirela gave a happy rumble as she settled down and began tearing into the boukin Jiji had gotten them. It seemed as if it had been ages sine she had met a friendly person and she was forever grateful to have run into Jiji when she had. At the mention of a proper hunt and teaching her the ropes, Mir frowned. She had been taught a few things, from her parents, but only the very basics and never anything bigger than the boukins they were currently enjoying. She nibbled lightly at the meat as she tried to push back the memories. It would do her no good to become upset at the moment. Despite the fact that she missed her family very much, Mirela knew that she had to move on, to learn the things her parents would have eventually taught her.
And with the knowledge that Jiji would give her, she'd be one step closer to finding her way back to Soudul --- and her family. She glanced up a Jiji's question and stretched her wings out and folded them back in, repeating this a couple of more times. "They feel great."

“Good,” Jijikko asserted with a happy rumble, “then hunt we shall!” He gave a pause, then settled back down, rumbling as he ate. “After food.”
And, as the case may be, after a break in between also to give her body some time to recuperate and the salve to do its work. They waited, in fact, until fairly well later into the day to begin their trip, testing Mirela’s wings again and heading out over the desert winds and dunes towards the outer rim of the great rocky, rising stretches of the Terra Expanse. It was solidly into midday by the time they arrived, the sun at its peak and burning hot down over them.
Jijikko gave a pleased sound, stretching his wings as he came to a land and shutting his eyes. The sun always did feel good on his scales. And, it was always a pleasure to hunt. Glancing back towards his companion, he tossed her a toothy, khehora equivalent of a grin, golden scales rippling with anticipation.
“Feeling strong?”

Mirela nodded at Jiji’s question and off they moved to begin their hunt. It didn’t take long before they came upon a very small group of dalaks — three of them — and her training began. She listened as Jiji gave her pointers and reminded her about her innate magic and how she could use it to her advantage. She quickly moved in, using any available shadows to hide herself. As she moved closer to the creatures she pulled at her magic, stretching out the shadows and engulfing the dalaks in a sphere of darkness. She heard squawking as they became frightened and quickly moved in. The shadows were like home to her and she made quick work of the birds and let the shadow sphere drop and seep away. She grinned up at Jiji, the three dalaks laid dead around her feet.
