Samael stared at the line of trees before him. The sight of them was all but blocked out by the thoughts and souls swirling through his mind, bickering with their deep, identical voices. Go around the forest, said one, you might never find your way out again. The other voice was claiming a grand adventure within the forest's depths, just waiting for him to seek it out. Sighing, Samael shook his head, and the bone helm atop it clacked around his horn. It was times like these that made him shut down his mind, made him wander without aim. But now a decision stood before him, and he had to make a choice for the first time since he'd decided to graze for breakfast.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped beneath the dark eaves of the forest and carefully folded his wings.

Isilmé had been in this particular forest for some time now - longer than she usually stayed. But it seemed to speak to her more than others and she found comfort in it. It reminded her of her home forest and it had been some time since she had seen her brother and father. She'd taken the time to get to know it and now it felt a part of her. She cared for it, spoke to it, cherished it. It was her safe place for the time being; far off and dense enoough that she could be alone with her thoughts.

Or so she had thought. The sound of twigs snapping and leaves crunching underneath hooves had her frozen and she sucked in a breath, carefully stepping around to get a view of who - or what - approached. She squinted in his direction; it was hard to discern much in the shade of the trees aside that he seemed male and relatively large and bulky. Wings, perhaps? She followed his path and frowned slightly, stepped out of her hiding spot to intervene.

"Don't take another step further," her voice didn't come out as fierce as she might have liked and she mentally cursed herself. She wouldn't run off screaming, but she was still scared of strangers. "You're about to step collapse that rabbit den," she explained, nodding her head. "Take a couple steps towards me, slowly." Perhaps a little too stern considering she was speaking to someone she had never met but it didn't seem to cross her mind or it didn't bother her if it had.

Samael froze midstep as a voice broke his concentrated silence. It wasn't one of his voices, though - it was another one, a female one. Eyebrows furrowing, he looked for her as he processed her words.

She stood yards away to his right: the spirit of a forest in soquili form. There were crystals on her crown, and attached to the tree that seemed to sprout from her shoulder... They glowed in the dim light that fell in gilded beams from the canopy. The lips and teeth that guarded the eyes on his shoulders opened, and Samael's field of vision expanded to see her better. She seemed to have twists in spades, as he did, and that made his heart clamor in his chest.

It's a trap, said one of his voices, and Samael cursed himself. A few moments of silence was not enough. She's trying to lure you away. Keep walking.

If there are rabbits there, they will die with the first spring kits, roared the other voice, and Samael shook his head furiously. Gritting his teeth, he took two steps toward the mare and stopped, staring at the ground, though the eyes on his shoulders were focused on her. "My apologies," he said, "to both you and the rabbits. It's been a long time since I've set foot in a forest."

Since you left your mother and sister because you couldn't handle them, whispered one voice, and he let out a sharp breath. His behavior must seem so strange, so erratic, but he couldn't concentrate on shutting down and speak with another at the same time - it had never worked. The voices always wanted the conversation to go their way, and he rarely let that happen. "I hope my movements don't scare you. I'm, uh... Working through some things, and I'm a... a pretty intense thinker." Quirking one side of his mouth up in an imitation of a smile he thought he was supposed to be wearing, Samael nodded to her. "I'm Samael. Thank you for the warning...?" He trailed off, wondering if she would introduce herself. The voices clamored at him for telling her his name. Names have power - no, they don't - what if she comes looking for you later for bad things? - she hardly looks capable of ill intent, idiot - looks can be deceiving; yours are.

Isilmé eyed the stallion carefully as he moved, weary of any signs of an attack. For now, he seemed harmless, but she wasn't naive enough to let her guard down completely. At least, when he complied, she relaxed a little. She shifted a little, wings fluttering. "No need to apologise," she felt a little bad about being a little.. mom telling off a child-ish. "Hard to notice them at times." She herself had collapsed a few though they had been abandoned or the rabbits out foraging when she did so. She tried to take care where she stood when she could.

His behaviour did not go unnoticed but the mare did not raise the issue - though it did make her wonder. "Forests are good for intense thinking," she mused, having spent many a days and nights wandering aimlessly, lost in her thoughts. "Isilmé Taurë. Just Isilmé is fine," she returned his smile before she cocked a brow. "Is there a reason your movements should scare me?" It was not a serious question - she no longer felt like she was in danger - she was more curious to see if he would offer an answer.

Relief washed through him like a wave as Isilmé reassured him; he wasn't sure what he or either of the voices would have done if she had done something else. The wrath of a forest guardian was not something he would risk. She probably knows this whole forest well, said one voice, it's tone hopeful, but the other chimed in right after it. Well enough to lead you in circles for days. "I'm beginning to notice that," he replied, and the only voice that belonged to him spoke up in his head. Good for everyone to do some intense thinking, it seems.

"You have a lovely name and a lovely home, Isilmé," said Samael. And a lovely face, said one voice suggestively, and Samael tamped it down mentally with a firm hoof. Well, at least he knew which voice that one was in that moment. "Not so much scare you as perhaps make you wary," he said. "My head is a rather clamorous place, and I'm not always sure what's going to happen next." One of his wings raised a bit before pressing back against his body, a sheepish gesture. "Do you know how long to the other side of this forest?

Isilmé raised a brow ever so slightly at the stallion as he spoke. Uncertainty in matters of the head were certainly things to be wary of and she knew as much all too well. Her brow twitched and she shook the feeling off, taking a few steps forward to close the distance between them while still keeping enough space to give her a clear escape path. "Only a temporary home and not my own, but a lovely one none the less," Her wings fluttered softly and she glanced up at the break in the canopy. "About half a day, give or take," her brow creased a little as she guestimated. She returned her gaze to him, allowing their eyes to meet. "Headed out myself if you'd like to join me. Easy to get lost on your own if you don't know the way and company is always nice."

It was the most forward the mare had been in her life and it was part so she might keep an eye on the stallion while he stomped through and part curiosity. She shifted a little. "Didn't find what I was looking for in this one. So off to the next one."

She's closing in! yelled a voice, and Samael flinched with the intensity of it. He had to bite back his response to shush it aloud in the open air; that would almost certainly make a strange impression. After a moment of what must of been an odd-looking expression and recovery, Samael cleared his throat. "Sorry. I'm not used to others approaching me, and sometimes it can startle me even when I think I'm used to it." One of his wings reached up to rub behind his ear in a sheepish gesture.

His voices returned their thoughts to the invitation, apparently, because one shouted it's a trap! and the other insisted it was just a nicety. Samael was prepared this time, though, and ignored them as much as possible as he weighed it in his head. Company could be nice, if I can get used to it. He had no obligation to this mare, surely, so he would be able to leave if the voices got to persistent to bear. "Company would do me good, and a guide would be better," he said, trying on a small smile. It felt strange on his face, unused like his voice would be - except that sometimes he talked back to his voices, like he had almost just done. "Thank you for the invitation."

Waiting a moment for her direction, he wondered what it was she was looking for. It wouldn't be acceptable to pry, though, would it? If it was, couldn't he apologize? "If I may, what are you looking for in the forests?"

Isilmé gave a soft shake of her head, a slight smile playing across her lips. "The apologies are mine to give, I should be careful to not be so forward." His question had her pause for a moment and her lips pursed as she frowned slightly. What was she looking for? It had started out as a quest to find her mother but it had been so long she wasn't even sure the mare was in this world anymore. She breathed out a long breath.

"Mother," she paused again; the word sounded strange coming from her mouth. She never had the chance to call it to her mother's face. "Not sure I'll ever find her, really. Which is hilarious given she has a tree growing on her back. You'd think that'd be easy to find, right?" She rambled - oft times talking about it gave her panic. She took a deep breath and smile softly. "Travelling is nice, at least. Lots of new friends to meet."

She began walking in the direction she had been wandering before Samael had arrived, wings fluttering softly in the cool night air. "And you? Why the woods; aside from deep thought?"

Some kind of feeling of satisfaction emerged in his head as one of the voices told him that her apology was an admission of trying to get too close to him; he had to shake his head at it again. If he could shake his head hard enough, he wondered, would he shake them right out? If not for the chance of injury, he would certainly try it. "There are many who think that forwardness is the only way to get things done," he murmured, but let the issue go. She didn't need to take the blame for his shortcomings, not when he'd already seen her step toward him once without issue.

His eyebrows raised at her admission. The lips and teeth over the eyes on his shoulders closed for a moment in a blink. "Your mother," he murmured, trailing off as he thought of his own. She was at home with his sister, he hoped, in check and watched over. He and his sister had decided long ago that she was liable to find herself either lost or in trouble if they let her out of their sight, considering the way her moods swung from one extreme to the other every few weeks. It was why she couldn't find her own family - and they wouldn't let her lose them.

The losing of her mother seemed a sensitive issue to this mare, so Samael did not voice his thoughts - that if she did, indeed, have a tree growing from her, searching the forests would be like trying to find a particular piece of hay in a haystack. "New friends are good," he agreed, ignoring the voice that spouted, New foes, too!

"I don't usually wander the woods, but when I need to, focusing on the complicated ground and walking over it gives me freedom from my thoughts. That's why I usually end up here." Clearing his throat, Samael began to follow after her, his eyes on the ground; the ones on his shoulders kept a line on her path. "The new friends you meet, are many of them animals?" he asked, instantly regretting the question. His dark voice laughed at him. You eat her friends! Revulsion welled up in him, so strongly he shivered briefly as he walked.

Isilmé looked over her shoulder to ensure the stallion was following and made careful steps through the forest, leavings crunching under hoof. A shiver rippled through her body - small and almost hard to catch. It was peaceful and she revelled in the feeling; the woods, new company. It was all so wonderful. The stallion's question caught her and pulled her back into the real world. She was briefly disorientated and shook her head before smiling back at him.

"Some, though mostly out of necessity. Sometimes I don't see others for a very long time and there's only so long I can go talking to myself.." she trailed off remembering a particularly long stretch of solitude in which she began to talk to the trees themselves and started hearing them talk back. She laughed a little. "Why do you ask?" It was a curious question. Was being friends with animals an oddity?

Samael took in the mare's smile, and her brief moment of... something. Hesitation? Did she not want to tell him, or was it something else? She is afraid you'll eat her friends! called that voice, and he could have almost felt it smirking if it had been a corporeal thing. Disappointment and anger that something in his head could be so cruel to him bubbled up inside, but he stayed composed.

"I had just wondered. You seemed quite aware of the rabbits' den earlier, so I wondered if you might've known them." Then, before the voices or he himself could process his own voice leaving his mouth, Samael spit out another question. It came out rather timid and shaky, wondering if perhaps... Perhaps she could somehow know what was going on in his head - you fool, whispered one of them, blurting out that question like that, she'll know! - right this very moment. "You talk to yourself?

Isilmé gave a soft shake of her head. "Didn't know those ones personally, no. But you wander the woods long enough and you start to pick up on things." She cocked her head to the left, eyes moving to and fro. "Like there, an owl ready to swoop that mouse for dinner," she whispered softly, nosing toward the direction just as the owl came down to claim its prize. "I don't know if I should be proud or disappointed as it's a testament to how long I've been about."

At his question, she smiled. "Oh yes, I have the most wonderful one sided conversations with myself." She faltered for a moment, wondering if she was perhaps coming off a little.. mad. "Sometimes I talk out loud - just to hear the sound of something other than my own steps. One day I'm sure a voice will respond and perhaps I'll have inherited something more than wood from mother." The worst came out before she could stop them and she pursed her lips. That wasn't something she had wanted to reveal so early into conversation - if ever. Few knew and the few that did only knew out of necessity or having encountered her mother. Maybe I'm like her now, she thought bitterly. Wandering forever looking for someone I'm certain I'll never find. Surely that's madness.
