A few weeks passed after Urthemiel learned of her new parents' secret. The three became closer than ever, ignoring the fact that most of the time, one or both of them of them were gone. One day, as Urthemiel slept, she was shaken awake.

She opened her eyes blearily to the sunlight and immediately shut them again before opening them once more, tentatively. Looking to the side, she saw Karina grinning. "Hey, Sleepyhead, rise and shine!" The older woman ripped the blankets off of her with a laugh, and the teenager sat up in her pajamas and yawned.

"Miss Lothar, what's the matter?" She asked as she rubbed at her eye.

Karina simply continued to grin like the cat that swallowed the canary. "Nothin'. Just get up, we got somethin' ta show ya." With that, the raven black haired woman left, closing the door behind her.

After having gotten dressed in her plain dress, Urthemiel stepped out into the hallway and walked towards the living room. Her eyes widened at a pile of finely wrapped presents on the table next to her parents. "What's all this?"

The duo looked at each other, and Karina answered. "Well, it's yer birthday, innit?"

As Urthemiel's mouth worked for words, Walpurgis spoke. "We read on your birth certificate that today was your birthday. Was it wrong?"

She shook her head lightly, sending locks of strawberry blonde hair into a small flurry. "No, it is, it's just... I've never seen so many presents before, especially not for my birthday." She paused. "I'm sorry, I must look incredibly ungrateful...." Taking a deep bow, she looked up at her parents with a small smile. "Thank you. Both of you."

As Walpurgis nodded, Karina laughed. "Well, sit down and start openin' 'em up, then."

Nodding back, Urthemiel sat down at the table. Walpurgis handed her the first gift.

Urthemiel gingerly pulled at the ribbon surrounding the present, a thin box, and Karina laughed again. "Jus' rip it open, kid!"

Urthemiel looked up. "But you went through so much work wrapping it - it seems like a waste."

Karina snorted, then grinned as she waved her off. "Do what ya want, kid." Urthemiel resumed her cautious opening.

Once the wrapping was removed - mostly intact, too! - she found herself staring at a cell phone box. Walpurgis spoke up. "We know we're gone a lot, and we decided that it'd be best if you could contact us if you need to. Sometimes, due to the nature of our "trips", our phones will be off, but we'll call you back as soon as we can."

The teenager nodded at the wisdom behind such a gift and smiled softly. "Thank you."

The older woman grinned. "Just thank us after ya open all the gifts, or else it'll start soundin' sarcastic." She handed her the next gift, a much larger box, and the teenager began opening it.

The huge box ended up containing many other, smaller unwrapped boxes. Opening them all one by one revealed a growing outfit. First, a hat with a blue ribbon. Then, laced bridal gloves. White stockings. Blue shoes. And finally, the most beautiful dress the teenager had ever seen. She stared at the elegant blue dress in wonder before Walpurgis broke her out of her enrapture. "Would you like to try it on?"

The teenager nodded almost instantly. "I would, thank you!" Gathering up the dress and all the other clothes, she retreated to her room and shut the door behind her. Sliding off her simple shift, she pulled on the stockings, shifting them so the bottoms aligned correctly with her toes before putting on the shoes. Looking at the gloves, she decided those should probably be put on next, and she laced them up one at a time with a small amount of difficulty. Next, she pulled on the dress, stopping to marvel at herself in the mirror - it was beautiful! - before finally putting on the hat.

Stepping back out into the living room, she smiled bashfully as her parents applauded her new look. Karina even threw in a wolf whistle, making the girl blush furiously. Sitting down carefully, she accepted the next gift.

Doing as Karina asked, Urthemiel withheld her thanks as she opened gift after gift. A box of chocolates. A card from the mothers and the other kids at the orphanage wishing her a happy birthday - she teared up at that one. A pokemon doll. Finally, she was out of presents. Smiling through the tears, Urthemiel opened her mouth to thank them before Karina cut her off. "Nope, not time yet! Ya still got one more." She retrieved a small box from her pocket and handed it gently to the girl. "And this one, ya should be gentle with."

Confused, Urthemiel unwrapped the box even more gingerly than before, revealing a small box similar to a box that would contain earrings, but just a little larger. Prying it open as softly as she could, she froze at the sight of a pokeball. It was in its compact form, so she understood why she had to be careful, but there wouldn't actually be a pokemon inside, right?

Karina grinned. "Ah caught the little bugger on mah recent "trip" to the Kesfas Mountains. Go on and send it out."

Oh, Arceus, there was a pokemon inside.

Her breath caught in her throat, and she picked the ball up as cautiously as possible, as if afraid she might crush it. The ball enlarged, and she pressed the button. A red flash illuminated the living room, and a small pokemon appeared in her hand. It was a cleffa, and it looked up at her with endearing eyes. "Cleff?" Tears welled in the teenager's eyes. She had never dared dream of having a pokemon of her own.

Walpurgis smiled at her. "Would you like to give her a nickname?"

Urthemiel looked down at the tiny pokemon in her hands and smiled. "Yes. She's Elaine."

Setting the cleffa on the table gently, Urthemiel turned to her parents, who were both smiling at her. She thought to herself about everything they'd done for her, even before today, and decided that now was the time. Stepping over to them, she wrapped them both in a hug, which they immediately reciprocated. "Thank you, Mom and Dad." The significance of her words were not lost on her parents, and they hugged her tighter as Elaine looked on. As the three broke away from each other, Urthemiel looked down. "I... I know that this seems sudden, and it is, but..." She looked up with determination in her eyes. "I want to go on a journey. I've wanted to go since I was a kid, but I never thought I'd get a pokemon. It's selfish of me, but now that I have Elaine, I want to go on a journey. I-I-I have the cellphone now, so we can keep in touch, and --"

Her parents cut her off. "Whatever you want to do, we'll support it." "'Swhat parents do, yeah?"

The teenager froze, and she ducked her head in gratitude. "Thanks, Mom, Dad."

After all her things had been packed, Walpurgis handed her a key. "In case you ever want to come home, even if just for a time." Karina gave her some money, and after the three hugged again, she was off with Elaine.
