Upon receiving consent to travel together on a brief lunch hunt with the small, wary diabi youngling, Mirela, Jijikko happily took the lead. Though he wasn’t as familiar with this particular stretch of desert as he was some others — namely those closer to his birthplace and along the edges of the Terra Expanse — but he was familiar enough to feel comfortable working his way around the landscape. He only just managed to remind himself not to immediately take off in flight. Instead, catering to her lack of ability to follow in a similar fashion, he took the ground route.

At least, until he smelled meat. A wild herd of desert hastar. He could taste it. Trilling enthusiastically, he turned to his company. “Wait here just a moment, little miss, I smell lunch. I’ll return shortly. With meat.”

And with that, a leap, and a great beat of his wings, Jiji was up and off, bright gold eyes keen and narrowed, on the lookout for his prey. Soon — yes, soon, he assured his stomach. One would likely be enough for the two of them? Or perhaps five…

Mirela followed along, eyes wandering along their surroundings, and taking everything in, but not straying from Jijikko for very long. She still did not trust the khehora and, after this, would likely not see him again. She huffed when he stopped and told her to wait. She had been catching her own food for days now. Granted, they had been rather small creatures and no real great threat to her being. It was no telling what Jijikko might be going after. She raised her snout into the air and sniffed. Hastar...maybe? It smelled similar to the hastar she had ate at home but something was different. Maybe it was because she was on a different land. Surely that would cause the strange smell.

How horrible and dangerous could a mere hastar be? Mir snorted and took off in the direction Jijikko had flown. He claws dug into the sand and she muttered as she stumbled forward before regaining her balance. Curse this sand. She could not wait to be back on Soudul and on firm ground. She came to a stop, crouching low, when the herd of hastar came into view. Her gaze flicked up to the sky, searching for Jijikko and where he might make his move from.

Years of experience and several massive battles — in addition to the daily, calmer sprawl of hunts that made up his meal-gathering routine — had taught Jijikko a thing or two about fighting in general, his magic, and what to avoid due to such actions being nothing but raw stupidity. Even so, his over-arching style and attitude towards fights had not changed greatly, and particularly in situations where he was terribly worried about his prey lashing out in a dangerous way, he abided by that strategy. In this case, Eowyn hastars were admittedly fierce — the fiercest of the breed, aside from those that dwelt on Aisko itself — and Jijikko wasn’t a fool to that. But, he also knew how to grapple with them, and it didn’t take much to scout the herd, pick a straggler, and dive in.

As a fully-grown and larger-than-average khehora to boot, lifting a hastar from the ground and into the skies was a manageable feat. Not one he would want to maintain for extended distances, mind — but manageable. One sharp twisting and snapping jerk on the beast’s neck, and its struggling ceased. Glancing down to locate his smaller companion, he gave an encouraging trill, wanting her as far away from the now highly upset herd as possible and making sure she saw him before heading towards an outcropping of rock she could reach from the ground. Or, he thought she could.

Squinting at it briefly as he settled with his meat, Jijikko eventually shifted his weight, stamping a hind leg down and sending a pulse of his magic out to re-shape the rock just enough to provide a path up.

Mirela wanted to join in on the hunt but hesitated as she watched the rest of the herd stampede after Jijikko. Even after he had flown up into the air, well out of their reach. Her gaze darted around the sky at Jijikko’s trill and she locked onto him, following him quickly, while avoiding the angry herd of desert hastars. She plopped down at the bottom of the outcropping and glanced up it’s side, wondering if she would be able to scale it. Just as the thought crossed her mind, Jiji stomped one of hind legs down and the rock shifted and formed into a path that would allow her to climb much more easily.

“You’re gaili?” Mir asked as she scrambled up the path he had created for her. She lowered her head and sniffed at the hastar. She had been right. There was a slight difference in the smell to this type of hastar. Most likely due to it’s habitat was Mir’s guess. After a thorough checking out, Mir plopped down and glanced up to Jijikko tilting her head to the side. “Thank you,” she said as her stomach rumbled, the thought of a proper meal prompting the noise.

Jijikko nodded. “Like the desert and like my mother before me,” he stated proudly, golden scales rippling in his enthusiasm.

He dug a foreleg of talons into the beast, holding it still before tearing and yanking free a sizeable hunk of foreleg. That, he deposited before Mir. It seemed only right to get the lady started, and he certainly hoped ‘uncooked’ meat didn’t bother her. He didn’t know any khehora yet that were, but most all Magescians seemed to take issue on that front. Jijikko knew next to nothing about how to start a fire, though, or what to do with it after so — this would have to do.

“And you, diabi…” He tilted his head, eyeing her as he dug in and ate. “You smell far from home. Have you been on Eowyn long?”

Mir sniffed at the meat Jiji had given her and settled down to tear into it. After swallowing her first bite she glanced up at his question. “Not long, no.” She tore another small piece of meat from the leg and gobbled it down before continuing. “A few days, maybe a week. I’m not really sure. My family…” She trailed off, wings sagging. “...they’re still on Soudul. I was...taken…”

Jijikko stiffened, frowning in puzzlement and then giving a low rumble of defensive discontent at her last assertion. “Taken?” he repeated. “By who? From where? Did they take any others?” He raised back onto his hindquarters, wings stretching instinctively and spines rippling. She’d been kiddnapped — but escaped, clearly. “I could fight them for you,” he asserted. “Or find your home…”

His tail flicked as he remembered she had already once doubted his willingness to even help her fly or fetch a meal, so it was unlikely she’d trust him to lead her across to another continent. But he wanted to help, and surely…

He snorted, settling slightly. “Perhaps, first, I teach you to fly properly…we can travel together some, find meals together and build your strength. Soudul is a long flight over and a youngling should not take it without first working up to it. But you are here, now…there is no hurt in you seeing some of the desert, and I can keep you safe.” He eyed her critically, taking a long chew and rumbling in his throat. “You don’t have to trust me, and you can leave when you want, but…” He shifted, settling his weight low. “I would like to help you.”

“Not any of my family. I was watching the nest and they were about to hatch…” Mir lowered her head, sniffing at the one appealing meat before her. “My other brother and sister were out with my parents. I’m...not sure if there were others on the trip with me or not. They used magic to keep me knocked out.” She tore off a small piece of meat, chewed and swallowed. Though she no longer felt like eating, she did not want to waste Jiji’s effort of catching them both a meal. She glanced up at his final offer and tilted her head. Exploring the desert did have some kind of appeal to her, even if her feet sank into the sand. Surely she would get used to that. And once she learned to fly, she would be able to avoid it all together.

Plus she knew nothing of the desert or where to go to find civilization or even what direction Soudul might be in, should she learn to fly and attempt the trip. “I would appreciate the lessons very much...and the help getting back to Soudul.”
