Family is important in Vaeringjar. Each family has its own ruling force as a sub-unit to the Jarl. A lot of families have problems in their inner workings, and you don't always need the Jarl for that! The Head of the Family can change at any time, but it follows some rules! Here's how your SoA becomes the head of their family.
  1. Is your SoA the only one in their family in the pride? Your SoA is automatically the head of the family! Any new members in your SoA's family will fall under them.
  2. What if you answered 'no' to the question above? The oldest of the family will take the role, unless all owners come to an agreement.
  3. Is there someone better suited for the role? Your SoA can step down at any time and allow another to take their place.
  4. Is there another way? Yes! You may challenge the current Family Head for the title. See how battles are set up here. Alternatively, if the current Head dies, the next in line will take over - often an heir or one of their children.

Crimes committed in the pride will effect social standing of a family occasionally. If anyone in a family commits a serious crime that goes to trial before the Jarl. It can often cause the member to be killed or thrown from the pride. If the Head of Family commits a serious crime, such as betraying the oath, then the entire family is reduced to the rank of Eið Brotsjór. To rise above this again, the entire family must work to show themselves as trustworthy and a new Head of Family is named. In the list below, the "Head of Family" section will show Eið Brotsjór.
  1. How can you get your SoA's family out of Eið Brotsjór status? First you must name a head of family! This won't change the status immediately, though. It will be noted in their family post. After that, the family collectively needs to compile 10 RPs, 1 of which must be with the new Head of Family. After that, you must RP within a Thing swearing fealty to the current Jarl/kona.
  2. Is there another way? Yes! During events, if there are any families in this status, there will be opportunities for your SoA to prove themselves.
  3. What happens if your family becomes Eið Brotsjór again? The RP count will double for requirements! (Ex. 10 RPs becomes 20RPs and if it happens again, it will become 40 RPs.)
  4. What if the Jarl changes while your SoA's family is at this rank? Your SoA's family is still viewed with some suspicion, but the family will only collectively need 3/4 (rounded down) the amount the RPs required to re-establish themselves. (Ex 10 RPs becomes 7, 20 RPs becomes 15, and 40 rps becomes 30.)
  5. What if the Jarl changes and your Family becomes this rank again? It goes off the last time your SoA's family became this rank. So if the Jarl changed before they finished their RPs, then betrayed the new Jarl - the next one would be 14 (7 RPs x2). If Jarls happen to change again before the RPs finished, it would reduce down to 10.

Thralls cannot be the Head of their Family. Their head of family is the same as the SoA that owns them! Leysingi are still viewed as part of their former-master's family, but are considered equal as a child is equal. Once a thrall is raised to Leysingi status they can take steps to become a full member of the pride.
  1. How can your SoA go from Thrall to Leysingi? Permission from their owner is enough. It doesn't have to be RPed out, but a note of agreement from both parties in the update thread. If you don't own the Thrall's owner, simply have them quote your update!
  2. Is there another way? Yes! If, during an event, a thrall saves the life of their master, they are expected to be released. However, they do still need permission, but it can also come from the Head of Family or the Jarl/kona in this case. They can also buy their freedom! See more info about that here.
  3. How can you raise your SoA's status to a full member? A Leysingi must achieve at least 2 RPs within the pride with the rank of Leysingi and then RP during a Thing, swearing their fealty.
  4. But Thralls can marry? They can, but they must either be owned by the same family, or gifted to the other family upon marriage.
  5. What about Leysingi? They can marry, too, right? Of course! They can marry a full member of a pride at this point and belong to that family until they become a full member.
  6. But what if your Leysingi has a wife/husband that is a thrall? Upon the Leysingi becoming a full member, their spouse will become a Leysingi and belong their spouse's family until they become full members as well.
