Appearance: Chris has a very unique appearance; the word ‘bright’ being a first thought. With long hair and long, straight cut bangs, she dyes it an obnoxious shade of teal, framing her pale face and bright pink eyes. Her hair reaches just past her posterior while her bangs reach her shoulders. A practically permanent decoration she keeps is a choker with a silver jigsaw piece, as she refuses to take it off. Chris’ personal preference for outfits are bright colors at all times, even down to her obnoxious yellow shoes.
Personality: Energetic and bubbly, Chris can light up a room just by making an appearance -- or so she thinks, at least. It’s extremely hard to put her down when she’s in her element. She works hard at giving other people a smile and will do anything in her power to lift someone’s spirits and encourage action. She hates seeing others being depressed and puts the task upon herself to help. Chris is also fiercely loyal to those she holds dear and will do just about anything in her power to make sure they’re safe and content. She rarely takes no for an answer as long as the yes is in a positive light – and she isn’t afraid to be stubborn. She does, however, know when to back down.
Only those who know her up close and personal see her when she’s feeling down in the dumps, as she does her best to hide her negative feelings. She claims to have many friends but in reality she holds everyone at arm’s length so that they wouldn’t have to see her at her lowest when those times arise. Preferring to be alone in these times, she will often mask them with excuses or pardons. While she likes to be confided in, she doesn’t usually confide in anyone so long as she can help it.
When not bursting with energy, Chris can be surprisingly subdued and calm. In these times she likes to gaze at the auras of others, practicing her abilities or pouring her attention into a book (simple if it's in English, advanced if it's in Dutch). These times are rare, though, and are usually caused by temporary illness. It is possible, however, to burn her deep enough to this point. Wishing not to dump her troubles on others, this is where she dismisses herself and puts forth effort to be alone.
Chris has obsessive tendencies, mostly shown for her closest friends. As she never spoke of these tendencies to her parents, little was done to channel these feelings. At home, this also resulted in her being rather lonely, but she would spend extra time with her parents instead. Her parents never found this strange considering she was always close to them as it was. She speaks little of her obsessions to anybody. She would never admit to it, but she is the tiniest bit jealous toward any of her close friends’ companions.
Even now she gets lonely, but Chris isn’t above spending time with anyone on campus so long as they allowed. She would never blame anyone if they didn’t want her company, usually being obnoxious at times. If no one provided company, Chris will go out on her own for walks or reading.
Chris can sometimes be obnoxious in her encouragements or attempts at lifting a mood. Loud and energetic, it's a tossup on whether or not her actions will either help someone or put them off. She considers herself an encouragement, but she often doesn't realize when she's annoying others; she does her best to notice and right herself when she can, however. Usually, when she's picked up on a sour mood is when she, herself, gets put down to various levels and does what she can to hide it anyway. Not being the best at reading body language, Chris relies more on reading the person in question’s aura. A lot of it is special guessing, only knowing so much about her own abilities, and she is definitely eager to learn more about auras through classes.
A lot of Chris’ free time is spent reading, even though it's hard for her to focus for too long. Having problems with ADHD, either she'll be entirely engrossed in a story or her mind will wander to everywhere but what she's trying to read or do. Chris was never able to get much into computers and generally preferred to be out and about when at all possible. There is always at least one book in her bag at all times. Novels, manga and comic books, it didn’t matter what the subject matter was, she devoured books like one could drink water -- even though it takes her some time to actually finish.
While she's not super into watching sports, Chris will try just about any physical activity under the sun whenever possible. She performs best when she's putting herself out there and doing anything involving moving her body. The poor girl gets jittery and twitchy when sitting still or trying to focus too long.
Chris also has a tendency to speak in Dutch when overly emotional.
History:
Anton and Betje VanGutneckt, born and raised in Holland, five years into their marriage gave birth to one Kristel VanGutneckt. Up until Kristel was three, they remained in their homeland. The family was humble; Anton worked in construction and Betje (or Elisabeth, as Chris’ American friends were taught to call her) a stay-at-home mother. Chris was raised contently, learning to live with what they had and nothing more. While they may not have had the greatest income, they were never in want, other than needing each other.
From an early age, Chris was energetic and always happy – attached to her mother’s hip at all times. She was content with homemade dolls and trinkets, playing with them until they were worn and ragged. Kristel never needed much other than what was given to her. However, shortly after entering her toddler stages, she developed a strange habit of staring at anyone and anything for extended periods of time. While this is a pretty common act for most children, Chris would stare in awe and amusement – even at her parents. It wasn’t until Bedje had begun teaching her colors and patterns as a child that she could properly put what she was so amused about into words.
Given that neither Anton or Betje were psychics, themselves, it was a strange concept for the both of them. It wasn’t met with malice or disgust, and after some research into it, they were eagerly supportive of their dear child and her abilities, even if only the one had surfaced yet. However, Kristel's extended family didn't take the news so well, and after insults and unwelcomed animosity were given, Anton and Betje cut them out of the child's life. Homeschooling was the first thing to come to mind once Kristel’s abilities were brought into play, as well as her English skills not being the strongest. Kristel was taught both English and Dutch by her mother, who opted to teach their daughter from the beginning. Anton’s English remains rusty, but he does his best to speak in English when he can for Kristel’s sake.
Given her abilities being weak as a child, at seven Betje suggested that they admit Kristel into the girl scouts as a test to see how well she could work with other children despite her abilities. Of course, a lot of the girls were put off by Kristel’s habit of staring for no reason, but otherwise they were able to get along and work together. Kristel did not make any long term friends while in the scouts, but she did enjoy her time otherwise.
It wasn’t long after that, at the age of twelve, that Kristel was admitted into Murmuring Pines Summer Camp. She did well in most of her courses, the hardest being levitation. It took her until nearly the end of her first year’s stay to grasp it just enough to get her a merit badge, but it was the one she was most proud of. Kristel loved all of the councilors, growing particularly fond of Nightshade; she was a great help with training and was basically Kristel’s go-to councilor. She taught her so much more about her abilities than anyone possibly ever could and a friendly bond was formed.
Adopting the nickname “Chris” from her peers, she didn’t have much trouble making friends, or at least coasting on the good side of most. Given her overly bubbly and excitable nature, she was seen as strange and overbearing, so while she was on good terms with just about everyone she made no permanent friends.
Except for one.
Chris felt an immediate bond with Daniel Kalinska and tended to cling onto him when he was available. He was passive and quiet, quite the opposite of herself, and she felt the need to bring him out of his shell, or at least share her good nature. She would often cheer him on when it came to learning and achieving his goals, encouraging him with each step. Given Daniel’s unannounced paranoia over his parents and their thoughts over keeping touch, their separation was at first met with severe disappointment and sadness. To soften the blow, the two of them gifted each other trinkets as memorabilia. The only times Chris would remove his necklace was for sleeping and bathing.
Given her homeschooling, Chris was never able to make another connecting like she had with Daniel, her mind often lingered on her friend for long periods of time. Her main focuses were her learning and reminiscing about camp. It was rather unhealthy to obsess over, but just the thought was enough to put a smile on her face when she needed it most.
Shortly after camp, she and her parents returned to Holland and lived at home. Time spent in the motherland was simple; she was still home schooled and spent a lot of her time inside despite her need to give her energy an outlet -- her parents decided that it was depression taking hold and keeping her from doing the things she loved. It wasn’t as if she didn’t enjoy her time there, having met a couple of friends to write letters to, but she longed to return to the states.
At the eve of her fifteenth birthday, Chris’ parents announced that after saving and saving, they had enrolled her in the Psychonaut Academy as well as three one-way tickets back to America. Having only been able to practice what abilities she had on her own, was extremely excited and very much eager to go.
