Video Games -
Barry has grown up loving video games, and he has not fallen out of love with them. From retro, 8-bit gaming to the high tech consoles of today, Barry likes to spend some of his time playing. Of course, he does not have as much time for it as he used to, with his job at the school and his other obligations, but every now and then he can find a day where he can record some Let's Play or review videos for the web, or just play something for fun. He loves to play online or locally with friends, and he enjoys social gatherings and meeting new friends with similar interests as him. There are few days when he can be found without some version of the DS/Gameboy on him.
Baking -
As much a hobby as it is his job, Barry truly loves baking. Not much for savory cooking, his focus remains on sweets and treats, from cakes to candies and everything in between. He loves the art of decorating and design, as much as he does coming up with new recipes and flavors. He watches a lot of television that focuses on competitions, and he adores the way the competitors can come up with marvelous and beautiful things on the fly or in only a matter of hours. He also loves sharing what he creates with others, and teaching them how to do the same, or take what he started and make it better.
Video Editing -
His interest in technology and the online world moves beyond just playing video games with others. He likes to record the games he plays and edit the video footage together to post online, with his commentary or with some sort of comedic purpose. He has thought about making an online show about baking, but for now he is more than content enough to keep with his let's plays and with editing video for other people. He is always willing to give some of his free time to helping others, if they asked him to put something together for them.
Virtues:
Sharing is Caring! -
Barry is an upbeat and nice kind of guy, with a lot of stories and experiences to share with others, as well as a strong will to share in the things that he enjoys, in the hopes of finding others who like them, or perhaps helping others become exposed to them and to learn. This is not just limited to his actual teaching job, or, really, anything academic at all. He loves hanging around with friends and discussing movies, making references to games and shows in public to see who gets them, sharing book and song recommendations with anyone who looks half interested in such things. Of course, baking for others and delivering a tray of cookies to a neighboring classroom, or bringing a cake to an event, top his list of favorite things to do. Barry simply believes in being open with others, and that finding common ground with other people, even if its something small, is like opening a little door to becoming closer. Relationships can be built further from there, they simply need to be started. Plus, he finds that he gets along best with people who are passionate about something, as he reflects that same kind of passion in his pursuits and loves.
Passionate -
Barry really believes in himself and in the things he does. He does them because he takes great joy of them, from his hobbies in video editing and gaming to his much grander love of the culinary arts and in teaching. He is driven to do his best, regardless of his undertaking at the time, because he draws the most enjoyment out of it when he knows he is doing the best job he can. That does not mean, of course, that he is always successful, or that his plans always work out, but he certainly gives everything he does his best shot. He is not the type of guy that needs anyone to notice his accomplishments, as he tends to thrive on a very personal level. That is to say, his passions burn in his heart, and he carries it inside him. It's his fuel, which forms a kind of cycle in him. He's happy when he's doing the things he loves, and that gives him the energy and muse to keep doing them. Interrupting the cycle pushes him well off his usual routine, but he does his best to avoid those kinds of ditches.
Controlled Chaos -
Barry is what others might call an 'organized mess'. He is profoundly organized in a completely haphazard way that only he seems to understand. What look like piles of mess on his desk are actually organized piles of work that he has laid out in a specific way. It is amazing that he can find anything in his office or in his home, and yet he always knows where everything is. He always seems like he's rushing off to do something, yet he is never known to be late for anything, and rarely forgets to do things he needs to do. He seems like a mess, but he is anything but. He just controls himself in a way that others are, for the most part, not used to. He doesn't use lists or alarms, but he's developed his own way to get through his life effectively, and since it works for him, he stays on top of all the important things he needs to do. And that's the part of it that people get to experience, regardless of what they see, which makes his natural chaos part of his charm and an admirable part of his nature.
Flaws:
Inconvenient -
Barry has a hard time knowing when to stop, when to leave, or when to take a hint. He can be fairly oblivious to things like that, and context clues tend to be lost on him. If he is not expressly told to go away, he is more than happy to stay and chat or visit until he has well over stayed his welcome. He thinks of himself as a social butterfly, but he can be over bearing and even obnoxious if he's particularly wrapped up. It's not something he does on purpose, of course, but it is a bad habit that he cannot seem to shake, and it does make people look down on him sometimes, when they are just trying to leave or have him leave, and he won't take the hint. He has been made aware of this habit, as well, as tactfully as his friends and coworkers that are annoyed by it can do, but it seems like a part of himself that is thoroughly ingrained, and regardless of his best efforts, it never seems like anything changes. It makes him seem like he's being a jerk on purpose, or simply refusing to do anything about it.
Idiosyncratic -
Quirky is an understatement when it comes to this guy. He has a lot of little personality quirks that some times get the better of him. He talks to himself a lot, and he does not notice when he's humming or making mouth noises to fill in quiet that he does not like to have settle. There are certain foods he won't eat, and certain ways he does things that he cannot give up. Sometimes, even the simplest things can seem like a challenge when in company, because he can sometimes be too stuck in his ways to really even notice that his methods are not the standard ones. He is the first to admit that he can be a little neurotic and high maintenance, and while he tries to do his best to be accommodating of others and not go out of his way to force them to bend to his needs, he can still be hard to understand or be around without being prepared. His quirks definitely become more apparent when he is excited or eager about something, or when he is scared or stressed. Extreme emotions will definitely impact him in negative ways, and bring out the worst of his quirks.
Clumsy -
It is a wonder that a man who drops so much stuff on a day to day basis can bake anything without it immediately ending up on the floor. While he is actually very careful and focused in the kitchen, his day to day life is much more of a mess. He is bumbling and awkward, and that often results in him running head long into a wall, or tripping over something at knee height. He is just a little spazzy and goofy, and that can build up and get released in embarrassing and clumsy ways. He seems to have pretty poor spacial awareness, or maybe there is something off in his depth perception, but whatever the cause, if there is something sticking out or hanging open, he will most likely bump into it. He is accident prone, and often sporting injuries he's given himself. The only exception seems to be in the kitchen itself, where his accidents number no more than any other cook in the place. It is a difference in focus. When he is at his leisure, or in a situation that makes him feel awkward or silly, he is far more prone to hurting himself or dropping things.
