Ginx stirred at the bottom of his lake. The frigid water in the depths caressed his body alerting him to living creatures at the surface. The lake that he claimed as his own was one that always had a glassy surface. There was nothing from nature to make the water stir, no wind or falling rocks or changing trees. The only thing that could make the water move was living creatures. Creatures of flesh and blood and a beating heart. The thought of that warmth caused Ginx to slowly awaken from his deep slumber.

It was not uncommon for him to sleep at the bottom of the lake for months at a time. But he would never sleep through the possibility of a meal. He moved lethargically and his limbs were stiff from the cold water. His long, strong tail swished back and forth. Each stroke slowly brought his hulking mass closer to the surface, closer to his meal.

Lior was not a very patient mare. She did not like the freezing lake that she was standing in and would much rather be in a warm lake, but she had to get his attention somehow. That is, assuming that this was even the right lake. It was the only one that matched the villagers description. The villagers had warned her not to pass through this was. They said that there was a monster living in the mirror lake. She was not about to be let down. They had promised a monster and she had better find a monster or some villagers are about to get their fingers bitten off.

She jumped up and down again in the water hoping that it would be enough to catch the attention of the lake monster. it was such a pretentious title, and she was going to take it from him. No one is better than her, she is the fiercest, strongest, and fastest of them all.

Lior growled to herself and turned to leave when she realized that she was surrounded by a thick fog that had seemed to appear out of no where. She was too focused on the lakes surface to have notice it roll in...but where did it come from? Its midday, there should be no fog. Lior looked back to the lake and imagined that there was something there, something just below the surface. It was moving fast! She jumped into the air, her wings a flurry of motion, as she avoided the giant snapping jaws that had emerged from the depths of the lake.

Mirror Lake was known for two things. First, is the monster that sleeps in its depths. Second, is the fog that suddenly appears for no apparent reason. It has been hypothesized the the fog only appears when the monster hunts, but a more scientific eye would see a freezing lake with deep geothermic currents that mix when the monster stirs from its sleep. No one is sure though for when they try to get close to the lake to investigate they get eaten. It is a mystery that is not worth losing ones life over.

Ginx may be slow moving and lethargic but it is a deep lake and his momentum builds fast. By the time he reaches the surface he is a tank with the speed of a barracuda. From below he looked up at his prey as he rose to meet it. It was standing on some ice, splashing at the surface. With as much force as he could muster Ginx surfaced. His mouth was gaping open and ready to meet his unsuspecting prey. But it was too late. He lept out of the water and felt the tip of it's tail just miss his teeth. Looks like it was time to go back to sleep. No need to chase after a missed meal when another would be by soon enough.

Lior gasped and tucked her tail in just intime to pull it out of the monster's reach. She was a bit miffed that he had been able to sneak up on her. She should have seen him coming, but the fog had distracted her. The fog was starting to clear, but it was still too thick for her to see where the monster had gone. She flew up a bit higher to look around, but her head was met with a thud on a sheet of ice. She has somehow been turned around in the fog and was actually flying down when she thought she was flying up. The ice broke and she fell into the lake.

Lior kicked and struggled to right herself, but the sudden shock of the cold water mixed with the confusion of her directions was too much for her. She was in panic mode and could not seem to find the surface of the lake. Her limbs were flailing in every direction and her wings gave pathetic flaps in an effort to fly. If she did not find the surface soon she would drown. This was not how she was supposed to die.

Ginx was already making his way back to the bottom of the lake when he felt the mare hit the water. He turned in a graceful circle and started to head towards the struggling mare. She was impossible to miss for not only was she making a great deal of noise, but her thrashing about caused the calm lake to ripple and he simply had to follow those vibrations. He made it to her and immediately lunged at her throat.

One of her thrashing legs got in his way and he found himself biting into her foreleg. This would work just as well. Ginx used his strong neck muscles to swing her around and point the both of them to the depths. He used his whole body to swim as he struggled with the meal. Swimming was slow and difficult with the leg in his mouth, but the mare would eventually give up and die of drowning. Maybe he would get a meal after all.

Lior screamed in pain as she felt the monsters teeth close around her front leg. Her scream released the last of her breath and she could feel herself slipping into the darkness. How had this happened? She was supposed to be the best and now she was going to be eaten just because a stupid trick. The fog had been an unfare advantage to him and if this was a normal fight she would have won. Dark splotched clouded her vision and her ears started to ring. In one last attempt to stay alive Lior took her free front leg and kicked at the monster's head while at the same time using her back hooves to kick at his tail. Her back hooves missed, but she felt her front hoof connect with his head for a solid blow.

The blow to his head was strong and unexpected. The mare should not have had that much energy left in her. Needless to say he was stunned and released her leg. He could not move, could not bring himself to move. Everything felt fuzzy and tingly at the same time. It was an awful feeling, mainly just because it was something he could feel. It was not like the cold numbing water that was always touching him, no this was a buzzing numbness that he could not shake. When he tried to move it only made the feeling worse. He felt anger at the mare for causing him this torture. It took a few moments but he started to lose the feeling and it was safe for him to move. He whipped around and looked for the mare. She would have had plenty of time to escape, but for the first time ever, he did not want to let her get away.

He shot to the surface and lept out of the water again. He was not aiming for anything, he was just trying to get a good view of his lake to see if the mare was still there.

Lior was hovering above the water, waiting for him. Her leg hurt something fierce but she would worry about it later. She had come to beat this monster and beat this monster she would. His head surfaced and Lior took the opportunity to strike another nasty blow, this time with her back legs.

Ginx felt her hoof strike his head again, but he was not about to fall for the same trick. He rolled with the impact and then turned last second and bit down into her back leg. He had a firm grip on her and started to shake her from side to side. His intent was to pull her out of the air and back into the water. He was tired and his head was starting to throb from the first impact. In all honesty he just wanted to go back to sleep, but this time it would not be without a meal.

Lior swore violently as she felt him bite down into her back leg. Really this had to be the stupidest fight ever. Hew wings were buzzing as fast as they could to keep her in the air. She was a very strong flier and was not threatened by the monster's amateur shaking. They sat like that for a while, The monster trying to shake her out of the sky but not quite strong enough to pull her into the water. Lior trying to pull the monster out of the water, but not quite strong enough to get him off her leg. Eventually both of them were exhausted. They were an equal match and it was obvious that neither of them was going to win this battle. Lior slowed her wing speed just enough to land on a large chunk of floating ice. She was ready to fly again in the case that the monster tried to pull her in, but she could feel his grip weakening and she felt the he was in the same position as her.

"Ok, this is stupid and pointless. I only came here today to prove that I was better than you, but it is obvious that we are an equal match." The words stung her pride a bit to say, but it was true and lieing was a worse form of weakness than anything else.

"How about you let go of my leg and we forget this whole thing happened ok?"

Ginx relaxed his jaw a bit, but did not completely let go of her leg. He had to agree that they were an equal match and there was no winner of this hunt. He was wasting his time by fighting with her and it would have been better to just sleep at the first time he missed her tail. He was still slightly upset at losing his meal though and could feel his stomach churning for meat. There was no way he was going to be able to sleep in this condition. He had to eat something.

"Hungshry...Fhheed...Meeehh." He worked the words out through his mouth and around her leg. He was not about to let her go until he had some promise of food. Maybe she could be reasoned with.

Lior gave one last pathetic shake of her leg, but he was latched on tight. She sighed through gritted teeth. His bite was quite painful, and her ego was a bit hurt. She shook her head and then looked back at the monster that was holding her. Now that they were still she could get a better look. She almost wanted to laugh at what she saw. He was no monster, but rather just a large Kelpi/Kirin mix. She could see how his heritage gave him a great advantage in his watery hunting grounds. His markings were rather intimidating though.

"Tch...why on earth would I bring you food after you try and eat me? I mean whats to..." She trailed off as an idea had popped in her head. A wicked grin spread across her face as a plan started to form.

Ginx slowly let go of her leg and took a stroke or two away from her. He know that wicked look on her face. That look was a dangerous look for his prey to have. He really regretted hunting this mare. Again, he wished he had just let her go the first time. He now could see why she made such a formidable foe. Strong Kalona blood coursed through her veins, but she also had the advantage in the air of a flutter. She looked dainty, but his throbbing head had taught him better.

He was unsure as to whether he should just sink back into the depths or wait and see if she had anything else to say. After all he still wanted a meal.

Lior turned to face the monster as he started to back away. Her smile spread even wider as her plan came to completion.

"Ok Mr. lake monster, you want food and I am always looking for some good fun. Lets make a deal. Obviously you are too strong for me to have any fun with, and I am too strong to be your food." She paused for a moment and took a good look around the lake. Most of the fog had cleared and she could now see the lay of the land.

"My name is Lior. I want you to remember it because from now on we are partners. Got that? You will under no circumstance eat me, and I will no longer attack you. In fact I am going to bring you food. You see, I get bored easily and I like to play games, test people, challenge others to physical and mental feats. I dont even know if you get what I am saying, but basically this lake is perfect for some games. I really like the idea of no flight ice block hopping, or cold plunge deep diving. There are lots of games that could be played here. But I dont like to play alone. I will usually bring one or two others with me. You are allowed to eat them. Don't eat me and eat me toys once im done with them. Its the ultimate game! they think they are just having fun, enjoying a good old challenge and then they die!"

She started to laugh...and laugh...and laugh. She really liked this idea. Lior was now very happy that the monster had been her equal because he was going to be a great partner in crime.

Ginx listened, but it was hard for him to grasp the full concept of her ranting. He did not talk to many others at all and she was talking so fast. All the talk about games and challenges went right over his head, but he did hear eat! He was going to get to eat! He grinned at her, his many pointy teeth showing.

"Lior...I will try to remember but...I'm not good with names. I am called Ginx, you will be one of the first to know me by more than monster. If you keep bringing me food I will not eat you...but if you come alone I will eat you...is that a deal?"

Ginx was a very primal type. He often had no control over his hunger and when it came to eating he could not guarantee her safety. Her deal intrigued him enough though to acctually make an effort to remember her name. LioLio...no...Lior...Lior...LiorLiorLiorLior...
