It was so strange how liberating it could be when you played outside…especially when playing outside was something that you didn’t really do often…
Her cheeks were pink from the exertion and the cold, but she felt good…both about the day, and about herself. It was a feeling that hadn’t come to her lately…but hey. Here it was.
She had honestly been pretty bummed for the past month. She had quit her job at the burger joint…it just hadn’t been working out, she just couldn’t handle the lousy tips and terrible management…and she thought she would have had another job by now…but that seemed like it just wasn’t in the cards right now…so she was sitting on the little pile of money that she had saved…and that pile was growing smaller by the day.
Cambria had been putting in some applications at other restaurants around the city…but so far she hadn’t heard anything…but she was starting to think that today was the day that might change all that. It was just a nice day…and it was growing warmer by the hour…so that was nice. Shoot, it had to be almost in the high fifties by now…this was beautiful weather for early March, and she wasn’t complaining.
The girl continued walking, unzipping her jacket and stretching, laughing as the wind blew gently across her face.
Oh yeah. Today was a great day for living. For real.

Laughter was something Zack did not expect to hear in the middle of the day; he assumed most kids were in school, and for an adult to laugh, by themselves? Well, they must have been crazy.
So, of course he turned his attention towards the sound. For a second he thought he might have gotten a good laugh himself, but then…
Then, he saw a face he recognized. And all thoughts of having a laugh at some loon disappeared and he spun on his heels to make his way over.
"I know you," he announced as he approached, and he donned his friendliest smile. Her name eluded him for a moment, but he wasn't going to let something like that slow him down. He certainly wasn't going to call her 'Girl with the White Shirt', though that was very much the only name popping into his head right now.
"You liked the wings at my bar. But you didn't come back for more, I was a little sad not to see you again. I thought we would have made good friends." He winked at her, for good measure, but also jutted out a hand as if to shake. "You seem like you're enjoying the cold a lot more than I am, how have you been?"

Cambria paused, glancing over at the person who had suddenly said that they knew her. What? Oh.
She blinked and broke into a smile for a moment, then walked over. “Of course I didn’t come back. You had my number. You never called. Not to mention I had put in an application and you sang all of these praises about your job and how you would help me get hired at your bar, and well. That never happened so…”
The girl shrugged, tossing her hair over her shoulder. She was quite enjoying the fact that it was growing out a little. She liked it long.
“And as for why I didn’t call you. It was pouring that day and my pants got soaked and the napkin you wrote your number on died in my pocket.” It wasn’t that she hadn’t checked. She had wanted to call him…it just…didn’t work.

"Hey, hey," Zack insisted. "I put in a good word for you. It's not my fault my boss has commitment issues."
…Commitment issues to his job, that is.
And his wife. And his mistress. And his girlfriend. And his honey on the side.
"But, I tell you what. Let's let bygones be bygones and forget about whose number got lost where. My boss likes me, see, so how about we head back to the bar. It's my day off, but I wouldn't mind getting some work done. I'm sure we can get you set up. Pull out your application, have an interview, a good long talk, and…"
He shrugged. "And maybe you'll have a fancy new job by the end of the day. And I'll make sure you get a nice, clean paper with my number on it, and a free lunch for the effort. Whatever you want off the menu. What do you say? I mean, unless you're having too much fun out here in the snow…"

“The snow’s all gone, numskull.”Or at least enough of it was gone, if there was any left, it was the nasty black stuff that had been sitting for weeks and weeks. Cambria couldn't help but feel just slightly amused…and quite pleased with his offer. It sounded very good…almost too good, to be honest.
“And after I land the job and can be happy to have employment again? What then? Do you invite me back to your place with a large bottle of booze to celebrate…? I’m not twenty one yet, so I’m totally game to underage drink at your place, Zack.”
She was feeling…feisty today. It was nice. Plus…the idea that she could have another source of income in a few short hours was enough to make her feel as though maybe she had a few too many drinks.

"Oh-ho," Zack purred, a bit playfully. "You're just trying to get me in all sorts of trouble, aren't you? Before you get any nasty ideas in your head, you ought to know that I'll deny ever having offered you anything, so if you had some notion of reporting me for misconduct just so you could steal my job..."
He trailed off, still seeming amused. He gestured for her to follow him as he began to lead her back towards the bar. "If the interview goes well though, we'll have to celebrate. Something nice. Dinner, maybe? ...And if you behave, perhaps a drink."

“And why on earth would I report you for any misconduct. I don’t really have any big plans to land myself in jail, so no worries.” Cambria laughed and shook her head. This guy was a hoot. He really was.
“So, of course. If the interview goes well, you can buy me dinner, and a drink, and maybe even a movie, if you want to push it that far.
Because she sure as hell did.
“So…in your honest opinion, do you think I have a shot at this job? Should I flash your boss my boobs, because I’m pretty desperate, and if you think that would help…I’m almost game to try it. But only for a second. Or maybe half a second…since you say he’s pretty…All over the place…? I don’t know Zack. Ugh. Come on. Let’s go before I get even more nervous.

A coy grin spread across Zack's face. "I think you've got a much better chance of being hired if you want to do a quick flash. Best way to start the interview is by making a good impression, right? Come on," he hastened his pace. "The faster we get this over with, the faster we get to celebrating. You just keep that pretty smile of yours and that charming personality and," Zack paused and elbowed her lightly in the side and winked. "You'll do great."
Especially if he had anything to say about it.
