Backdated to February 15, 2015

Alex was tired and dizzy, (and hungry, and thirsty, and achy) but for the first time in two weeks, he felt like he could actually put two thoughts together - because for the most part, he was coming out of withdrawal and that meant that he was getting sober. Which meant that he was in a better position than he had been in for months.

It didn't escape him, however, that throughout this whole ordeal, he had not seen the person that had decided to put him through it. General Schörl. He was also pretty sure only her word would get him out - and so when a nervous-looking Lieutenant had shown up to deliver food, he had asked her to let the General know he wanted to talk to her. She'd seemed surprised that he could put a sentence together, and he couldn't blame her for that, because he was pretty sure he had spent quite a while not able to do much more than swear and beg a lot.

Humiliating.

While direct presence lacked, reports from the attending medical crew, from Barbary. and from other youma pressed to the business did not. Kerberos rehabilitation was not unattended. When word came that he had the wherewithal, or was it gall, to request her by name, General Schörl was entertained. The physical symptoms should be subsided, by all accounting. That makes no promises on the mental or emptional dependencies. That depends more on personal fortitude and character, and is more volatile subject to subject. The observations of others can only be taken so far. Best source is direct.

The general walked the length of the Dark Kingdom, responding to the call over her crystal from a Lieutenant. She let her cane sound loudly in third rhythm of approach on the floor, a matter of strange familiarity even though the rhythm was wrong. The tactic remained in a sensation of presque vu to the very door of the corrupted's barracks keeping. She followed the feeling and knocked in a distinct, comically appropriate rhythm.

'Shave-and-a-hair-cut.' He will be needing the former at the very least. Then she entered.

"Good Morrow, Asphodel. "

"What words have you saved together between dawn and damning want?"

Alex's initial thought was to tell Schörl exactly where she could shove her words, but that wouldn't get him out of here. So he grit his teeth and took a breath. He was already in a vulnerable position, he didn't need to make it worse and risk ending up like Kairatos, beaten with a cane until he could barely stand.

"I want out," he said, because there was no reason for minced words or ridiculous flattery or anything like that. He wanted proper food and real sleep and he had never realized how damn quickly he grew facial hair until he wasn't shaving. "I'm done with drinking. I haven't wanted one for days, and I don't want to go back to that." There had to be something to sell her on this, right?

"I don't want to be a useless, alcohol-soaked lump. I'm lucky I didn't die. But I don't serve anyone or anything down here, either."

Watching the proverbial wheels turn, and especially the shifting of his temporalis and masseter, the General's indifferent pleasantness shifted subtly to amuse. How much we don't say when we think only to pronounce with our lips.

"Not wanting one when you're in the frying pan and have no access to any is different than when you are clean and relaxed. Or, more appropriately to you, when you just can't handle life anymore. "

"And you actually do serve a purpose here, pretty. You're giving the Medical Corp training. You're helping containment procedures be established. In fact, its one of the most useful times you've spent as an officer- better on your back than on your feet. Now. Give me something more concrete than 'I don't want to be a lump.' Lumps are useful- practice for amputations and replacements with Youma."

" There are two types of people in this world, the quick and the dead. Best prove which you are if you're going to call me here with something as petty as a 'want'. Give me goals, soldier. Objectives that you're going to complete with your usefulness."

"Did you just threaten me with being turned into a ******** science experiment?" Alex asked, and part of him was a little stunned. He knew Schörl was ******** up, but that was a special level of disturbing.

And she wanted goals.Objectives. That was a terrifying thought when he didn't want anything. When he didn't actually care about bettering himself, and definitely didn't want to do so for the Negaverse, because for all that in theory this was an improvement - he was sober, clearheaded, moreso than he had been in a long time - he still hated every second he had to spend here. And he hated more that he would have to say something that satisfied her if he wanted to leave. Or, leave intact.

"You want objectives?" And there was something, something that approached an honest goal. "I want to prove myself worthy of Eternal rank. Whatever that takes." Because he could remember the feeling of his Eternal magic at his fingertips, and it had affected Order and Chaos alike. And if he was trapped in service to Metallia - because no matter what promises they made, no one was going to help him escape out of anything but fear of what he would become if they didn't - at least he could take a few shots at his own side. Make them think long and hard about what they'd done.

"I don't make threats, pet." The tone had a smile in it, but there was none on her mouth. Threats are empty words parents use to unsuccessfully cajole their unruly brood to act human. Threats are for people who do not have plans. They are for those who have no intention of actig.
He was very good at just restating what she'd already said as a question. It was like watching a Japanese daytime drama. But is it due to stupidity, the effects of only just surfacing again, or is it an act to try to cover over actual lack of having any and therefore remaining just as useless coming out as he was when pissed and going in. I expect measures of all of the above.

"Asked for concrete, personal objectives, and you give me a directionless platitude. Very on point." She caught his chin, thumb pressing hard into the indenture beneath his bottom lip while her knuckle under the bone was a vice to direct his glance. Her intention was to lock gaze. "Not towards the 'quick' pole of that option spectrum. "

"This will be your reprieve. You will not get another. Prove yourself with actual goals- Eternals are leaders, who don't need orders every minute of the day to have an idea of what to do to effectively serve Metallia. If you persist in needing orders for any hope of direction, then it will be my orders and my ideals, member of the Special Operations. And I will fetch you back."

"Are we clear? Now. One goal. Tell me one goal you will dedicated to Metallia. One and your sad wits are free." The unfortunate truth of warm, active bodies being needed in the ranks. The medical corp cannot continue to be wasted on you. Power given into you cannot continue to be wasted.

Alex grit his teeth. He had thought he was giving her a solid goal, but apparently not, and so he was left racking his brain for ideas. He wasn't exactly at his best for clever turns of phrase - not that he was a particularly good liar anyway. So it had to be something he could actually, actively do, make steps towards.

Something easy like taking more energy or starseeds was - well, too easy.

But something jumped to mind. A handsome Cosmos Knight - and something he could do, even if it would make him sick inside to drag someone else down into this.

"There's a Page of Cosmos, Caledonia. I know recruitment work isn't usually SpecOps, but I'm pretty sure I can win him over. I'll bring him to Metallia - as a live body for corruption or as a starseed for fuel. Would you like a timeline for that, to make it more specific, General?" He hated himself for even thinking of it, but he was damned anyway. It wasn't like he could make it any worse.

" It isn't usually a focus of the Special Operations, but it will do. You have four months- one third of a year. A generous allotment, lengthy, and I hope far over estimated. As fast as you can, Kerberos. Prove yourself as useful for your self, and not as a warm body. "

"I look forward to meeting Caledonia transmuted. I will let the General Sovereigns know the name of your target and your mission- they are often busy. Better that they have some preparation that their help will be needed to changing one thing to another. " She let go her grip on him to snap her fingers- a signal to Barbary to come out from his lurkings to be her cape. "Grab your pack of supplies, you are dismissed from barracks. Walk with me, out to the main chamber. I will take you to the streets of Destiny CIty. You can find your way home from there."

Four months. He had four months to talk Caledonia over, and no matter what happened, he would damn himself. If he succeeded, he trapped himself in the Negaverse forever, more surely than ever - Order would never accept him if he'd stolen away one of their own - and if he failed, well. He didn't want to think of what kind of cleverly horrible punishment Schörl would devise for him.

But for now he was free, and his limbs popped as he stood up and stretched.

"I won't disappoint you. Or them," he said. Probably a lie. There wasn't anyone in his life he hadn't disappointed, at some point. But he would have to find a way to do this, and even though the idea of dragging someone else down into the hell that was Chaos sat in his chest like a lead weight, he would do what he had to in order to survive.

He glanced, for a moment, at Schörl. "Thank you, General." He said, and it was surprisingly sincere. "I needed this, more badly than I realized."
